You can heal yourself with this skill as long as you use Lichborne. Also if another DK uses Lichborne you can also heal him. (Which helps if you're doing an instance with 5 DK's) ^_^

there is a macro u can do to castit on ur pet while not changing targets

what concerns me about this talent is no cooldown. as long as you can continue to generate runic power, you could spam someone to the ground with this

That piece of text implies it heals the death knight while damaging the friendly undead target, not that it heals the friendly undead target.

Now I'm not in beta, but if what I described above is incorrect, the tooltip needs to be fixed.

I don't get that part.
Does that mean if I cast it on a fellow death knight I get healed? Does it drain his/her health in the process? Can someone help me get some clarification on that?

This ability is pitifully weak. Damage per RP is absolutely terrible. There is almost no reason to use this unless you need to heal your ghoul or you just really don't like seeing a full RP bar.

For pure DPS, the only other options available to use RP on are gargoyle, DRW, and frost strike. Rune strike is powerful, but not really reliable in that it requires the enemy to dodge/parry (and if you're behind the enemy, it should only be dodging, which won't happen very often).
Each of the other options is a talent, and with the exception of a frost/unholy hybrid spec, you are not going to have multiple of the other abilities. Gargoyle and DRW are also on 3 minute cool-downs, and since you will generate (assume 10 sec per rune, 10 RP per rune, although this assumes perfect conditions and no talents) about 1 RP per second, then in 3 min you would likely generate around 180 RP. You could still fit 2 death coils in and still get the full effect of the other abilities.

Dont forget atm their doesnt seem to be a ton of minor glyphs, so http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=43539 is looking real good, which leaves me to believe they are going to make this available to heal even without Lichborne, also wondering if Undead DK will be able to use this without Lichborne if reguraly it is still required. If so 5 man DK instances will be even more common, each with the ability to heal the others or them selfs when needed.

This version of Death Coil is more in line with Arthas' ability in Warcraft III--which also damaged enemies and healed friendly undead units.

How do we explain away the retcon which produced the warlock form?

I just used this while stunned by a ravager. Can anyone confirm it's not just that knockdown stun some mobs do and it can be done through any stun?

Can anyone confirm whether Forsaken PCs are considered Undead for purposes of receiving a heal from this spell? Knowing how Blizzard hates us Hordies I doubt life would be that good but it's still food for thought...

Interesting thing about the this spell is that it uses similar casting animation as it was shown in Warcraft III by Death Knight hero. You cast the bolt while wielding the sword, as if it is tossed by the sword.

Using the Lichborne talent (11-pointer in the frost tree) you become Undead, making yourself eligible for Death Coil healing. And yes, you CAN heal yourself using this skill.

Worth mentioning for RPers or people that really likes lore is that this spell is directly taken from the original Death Knight hero class, both in mechanism and in animation. When you cast this, your character will do a normal attackanimation.

Does anyone have a solid number for this spell's AP coefficient? I'm getting around 22.5% by my math, but that's with only a few samples.

As a Blood specced DK, I find this ability useless...so does become the Runicpower...
As a Tank thanks god you have rune strike that is very powerfull and doesnt use your global cooldown.
But If you are dps, you can't runestrike, so unless you have no runes active, there is no point to use deathcoil, because it does a ridiculous amount of damage (I'm talking with no Morbidity talent).
So whats the point of wasting 1.5GC for this $%^& ?
And even if you use it when you have no runes, you are gonna need to use it something like one time every 10sec or so. Which means, you only use 40 runic power every 10sec. When you generate much more of it ^^...
I'm really concerned about it, for me it's broken. If you are somehow full of runic power all the time, it just mean the game is broken...

Unholy got corpse explosion/gargoil/death coil, frost have frost strike, but what the hell a blood DK does with his runic power ? peanuts?
It may be ok if blood have nothing, because he could have a more powerfull death coil, but hey it's in unholy tree.
I'm not talking about the 51 point talent, because all tree have one. I'm talking mid range talents. I dont play 51 blood.

Blood DK should have something to do with runicpower not just thoses that have 51 point and even here its on a huge cooldown....Even as a tank, if my runestrike don't proc, which even with good gear, can happen by time to time, I will never think "hey lets try to burst a death coil to use it", because I dont want to waste my global cooldown when my runes are active...and even when i Have no runes active, I just hit blood tap to get an extra one. And here it goes some more Runic Power that I dont care about.

Blizzard think about it...and try playing a blood spec dk without tanking (i.e no rune strike), you are gonna be full a lot, because heart strike/obliterate does more damage than death coil...

I play Blood since the beginning, because I like the gameplay, but sometime I really think runicpower is useless. When it's supposed to be THE core thing of the DK. I may be wrong. But just because I may happen to think that, and probably many people too, means that you failed...

Lets try to be constructive.
Add an ability deep in the blood tree (like 30-40ish), that would cost runic power, that either give us a short duration self buff. Or a new attack ability, but it would look too much like frost strike. Or it would be an attack like rune strike, that activate on critical. Exemple : "Blood frenzy" Cost 45 Runic power. One of your special abilities must crit to activate. Make your next special ability a critical hit. No GC.
Here we would be talking.

Healing from an undead implies you cast it on them, you get healed. Which isn't the case.

There is something else to note, you can stack up Shadow Infusion and in turn proc Dark Transformation while using this for healing as well.

How can you have missed the fact that Death Knights have several abilities to selfheal already: Death Strike, Death Pact, Rune Tab and ofcourse Death Coil in combination with Lichborne.

Additional glyphs can boost your Death Coil selfheals even more:

i tryed to put lichborne and death coil together.. but the only problem is the runic power, when you really need to heal yourself you would probably not have any runic or your lichborne is on cd. anyways this move is probably the most spammable in unholy spec. every second i get to throw in a death coil right after i cast scourge strike or icy touch. plus the talent that makes the death coil a free cast everytime you get the chance right after you melee attack the target is really useful. I love it when i get full runic power and rush into a big group in bgs and press tab while casting death coil on everyone and infecting them with insect swarm mwahahaha, then i infect everyone with diseases and they can not do anything about it >:)

Heals for a ridiculous amount. This stacked with death pact can heal you to max health on most occasions, and if you have a lot of crit it hits you for like 75% of hp (if critted, of course)

You can always add instead of changing and then switching back the target. I prefer /castsequence so its clear of errors and easy to monitor. Bind it to scroll-wheel + any mod and you will never go back ;]

/castsequence reset=10 Lichborne,Death Coil,Death Coil,Death Coil,Death Coil (add as many casts as you need)

So, as of 5.0.4, this ability is incredible when combined with Lichborne. I am a Blood Death Knight and I use the following macro:
#showtooltip Death Coil
/clearfocus
/focus
/cast Lichborne
/cast Death Coil
This sets my character as the focus, cast Lichborne and casts Death Coil on the focus target.
My problem is, because Death Coil and Lichborne are two separate abilities, it shows on my action bar as Death Coil. I wanted to know if there was a way to make a macro that showed whether I have the runic power to cast Death Coil that also shows how long is left on the cooldown of Lichborne. Is this possible or am I way in over my head?
