Found Volpin cowering by a tree at (30, 35) in Suramar. I ran around the area with a target macro for a while before I found him and ran past this tree a few times so it's either a little buggy (beta...) or has a really small radius to trigger the event. Three Nightborne fox hunters spawned when I found him, they were weak so no problems there. Once they're dead you simply click on him, he does a little dance and you get the mount!

Absolutely gorgeous mount, very happy with him. Best of luck everyone. :)

Me and my friend found the guy next to the tree, but he was hostile only and had a yellow exclamation above his head. We killed him on our horde characters but it didn't work. This leads me to believe WoWhead is missing a previous quest. Coordinates are indeed 17, 31 for this NPC but nothing happens. All you can do is kill him and get nothing.

The quest that starts the questchain comes from Torn Invitation

Torn Invitation can drop from the Withered Training Scenario chests.

Apperantly, i've heard that you can get Torn Invitation from Nightfallen Hoard
Not sure if this is true but it's a nice thing to keep in mind if you have The Nightfallen as your daily world quest emissary. :')

I found the quest in the bounty (Emissary Quest) of the Nightfallen (so thats another source I guess). I've completed everything today in the early morning 08.09.2016. Guess one of the first, damn FeelsGoodMan.

Wenn you have to find Volpin, don't try to use a macro, he's not targetable, he was at the tree at 30/35 suramar.

Almost completed the quest chain today, however Volpin never got a nameplate for the "Calm Volpin" portion of the quest. No idea what to do at this point - has this happened to anyone else?

I'm going to need this in a tamable form for my hunter, ASAP! I need to be riding a large one with a cute smaller one running beside me. Foxes are the best! And this model is SO much better than the current tamable fox!

If you are at the 'defend' step, be ready to click the fox immediately after you finish the fight.

Someone rode up and stole my fox just as I killed the last mob, then I got to watch them equip it and ride off as it despawned. When it respawns, you can no longer trigger the fight, the fox is not clickable, and the only way you'll be able to complete is screwing the next guy.

Volpin @ 30, 35 (Largest Tree in the area)

No nameplate, just get close enough the activate the next phase, kill the spawned adds and loot the fox by cliking on it.

Volpin will be standing in the grass next to a big tree at 30, 35. He is the size of a normal animal-sized mob, not the size of what he is when you have the mount. He might be a little hard to see at first if you have your graphics up high, due to him being orange in lots of orange colored tall grass. Get near him and a few fairly weak mobs will spawn you have to kill, it's very easily soloable. When they are dead, simply click on Volpin and you'll complete the quest, receiving the mount then and there.
He has one of the smoothest, most natural animal-mount running animations I have seen in the game, and like many animal-type ground mounts he has his own little special animation when you are just standing still and press jump, by doing this cool little quick figure 8.

FYI, if you get this quest item a second time, don't bother doing it. I did all the missions and then had a friend come with me to do the last part. He couldn't even see the fox to click on him.

My invitation dropped from Nightfallen Cache, rewarded from The Nightfallen Emissary quests, about 2 days ago.

Since my followers are not that geared/epics, the Order Hall part 2 days alone. After that, it's easy to obtain.

The first mob you'll have to kill has 1.2m HP. The mobs you'll have to kill while defending Volpin has 840k HP and there are 4 of them. Hope this'll be helpful!

Had been doing the scenario and the emissary quests for Nightfallen since I dinged 110 (around the second day after launch). Finally got it to drop on the 25th of this month. Once you get it you have to complete four 24 hour quests for your class order hall. Kind of annoying, but once those are done you hop over to Suramar. First quest you find and kill an npc at the northern part of the zone, then you head over to the hunting grounds where the large packs of wolves are and search for the little guy, and he was indeed cowering by the tree at 30,35. You get 3 easy mobs that spawn once you find him, really easy to kill. He's an amazing mount. Really glad they added him. Good luck everyone!

Everyone is saying you have to do the Nightfallen thing to get the quest to start... my man has never done the withered training and the quest for the map pieces for the hunt started on their own in his demon hunter class hall... is this really possible? Or was it a glitch?

Look for the tree with a root that looks like an arch -- high enough to run through like a doorway. Run through it, and there he is.

Kill Herald Gevedaun that is located at 17.7 31.1 first.

Volpin the Elusive can be found at 30.08 35,57 near a big tree. When you locate him, some adds will spawn. Kill them and you will be able to interact with the fox. You will then receive the mount.

Note: Do NOT have full inventory when completing the quest. You will not get the reward in your mail nor will the quest be completed. And you WON'T BE ABLE TO INTERACT with the fox again unless you abandon your quest and do it all over again. You can pick the quest up again in your class hall.

In case you haven't read it in some of the replies in the other higher rated comments here, if you manage to bug this quest out, drop it and you will be able to pick it up again from your class hall from the <Mission Specialist> NPC

When I got stuck at step 4 (I couldn't interact with the fox), dropping the quest and reaquiring it in my class hall worked for me. The questgiver will then be the NPC beside your mission table.

When this step bugs defending the Fox, no need to drop the quest.
Log out, log in, go to the fox and in front of him u see the hunters go to them and kill them.

I found him at 30,35 and he was un targetable. You kill a couple of weak hunters coming in and that's it.

Not sure exactly why, but when I ran up to confront the starter for the hunt and killed him the quest bugged out and sent me nowhere. It's not a big deal though. He respawns within five minutes and the problem fixes itself. Just small fyi...

Volpin is under a tree at (30, 36) and is untargetable, so don't bother with /tar macros.

What's the deal with this quest? I'm running it, "Volpin the Elusive", after having blown several days tying up followers to get all 4 pieces of the map, and am currently standing on the fox's tail. I've logged out, logged in, changed back & forth between toons to see if it reset... nothing. No hunters at all have appeared at any visit. I've come in from multiple directions, killed about 300 wolves in the process, still no hunters. It's getting tedious to say the least. I haven't abandoned it yet for fear of ending up doing it all over again or otherwise breaking it, but I'm about to, for lack of anything else working.

Have been trying to get this fox for more than a year. Finally happened! I really believe it is just 'happenstance.' The toon who won was not exalted with Nightfallen, he did clear all doors, had 700+ points at the end. A very frustrating want.

This must have been changed at some point? I went to my class order hall on my monk today for the first time since Legion, and the quest giver was there - no idea where i got the quest breadcrumb from - apparently drops from withered army or emissaries.

In any case, i killed the guy who started the hunt, located the fox and was immediately beset by 4 enemy hunters. Killed them and was able to click on fox to claim mount. Total time was only about 5 mins or so.

The missive was torn and part of it missing, but there was enough remaining to make out the salient points. This was an invitation to some member of the Nightborne nobility to participate in a hunt for a creature known as Volpin the Elusive.

According to the invitation, Volpin was the last of the Llothien prowlers, creatures that resembled foxes, but were large as small horses. And but for Volpin, they were extinct.

I grimaced in disgust. The Nightbourne did not wipe out the prowlers for food; there wasn't much meat on their lithe, wiry bodies and what little they had was too tough to be eaten. Nor were they pests, killing livestock or destroying crops. No, the Nightborne hunted these creatures to extinction simply because their preternatural cunning provided the Nightborne elite with excellent sport.

Repugnant as this was, I did not have the luxury to concern myself with it. The Legion was the most dire threat ever faced by Azeroth. And with King Varian dead, betrayed by the Horde, our forces were now led by the well-meaning but woefully unprepared King Anduin. And this situation had me pacing the ground at night.

Why would my followers even bring this to me? Surely they realize there are matters of greater importance than a fox hunt.

Among my most trusted advisors was John J. Keeshan. And he and I have a bit of history. Together, we saved Lakeshire from an invasion of Blackrock orcs, but at the cost of his closest friends and fellow members of Bravo company. But that is another story.

Keeshan argued that by interfering with the hunt for Volpin, I would send a message to the Nightborne. Specifically, that despite our efforts against the Legion, we are still able to keep watch on the Nightborne. And even their trivial activities are not outside our notice.

Although I did not find this reasoning particularly persuasive, I gave my followers leave to pursue this. Keeshan is a wise man, and whenever I deferred to his judgment, I would always find later he was correct.

A day later, my followers produced another invitation, two halves of a map and a list of the invited nobles. On the list, I found the starter of the hunt: a Nightborne known as Herald Gevedaun. Finding Gevedaun was not difficult. Consulting the map, I found him just outside of Suramar. Unfortunately, I was too late to stop the commencement of the hunt.

I followed the map toward . Beneath a tree, I spotted a foxlike creature the size of a small horse, its brassy red coat shining in the afternoon sun, his sky blue eyes had a seemingly intelligent look. For an instant, I felt the breath being drawn out of me. I don't recall ever seeing a more beautiful creature.

Volpin pitifully attempted to back away on unsteady legs. He had been pursued by the Nightborne nobles to exhaustion and could run no further. Trembling, he eyed the four approaching Nightborne, keenly aware his end was near.

Again, that feeling of disgust welled up within me, but this was no time to contemplate the callousness of the pampered nobility. If I was going to stop this, I needed to act immediately.

I halted my mount between Volpin and the nobles, dismounted, then fastened a malevolent glare at my opponents. "Volpin is now under my protection, Nightborne. Depart, and I will leave you to your lives," I growled. "For now."

The nobles seemed less intimidated than offended. As if I, an outsider, had no right to even be in their presence, much less address them with threats.

The umbrage, however, was short-lived. They exchanged a brief look and apparently decided that this uppity Dranei needed to become an example. They raised their bows and drew back arrows. But their volley was largely ineffectual; the splinted mail I wore was among the finest ever crafted, imbued with ancient and powerful enchantments. Mundane arrows intended to kill a defenseless animal were simply no threat to me. Perhaps, given time, they might have found a way to injure me. But I would not give them the time to try.

"You were warned, Nightborne," I snarled. "The elements of sky and earth are mine to command, and with them, I will end your existence!"

Mystical symbols etched in my mind, I gestured. And lightning arced from my outstretched hand, staggering the astonished Nightborne. Another gesture, and a totem sprang up in their midst, spraying fire from the molten depths of Azeroth itself. Between the claps of thunder and the rumblings of the quaking ground, I could hear the pitiful whimpers of Volphin behind me, doubtless terrified by the micro-apocalypse I had unleashed. But this was no time for restraint.

Then it was over. Four Nightborne nobles had been reduced to smoking husks in less than a minute. As I regarded the smoldering corpses, I thought of Keeshan's argument that this would send a message to the Nightborne.

"I trust my point has been made," I said to no one.

Volpin was now cowering on the ground, perhaps wondering if I had killed the Nightborne merely to claim his life for myself. This would require an extreme revision of tactics.

I took a slow, deliberate step toward him, then sat on the ground. I spoke in the most soothing tones I could muster, trying to reassure Volpin that he was safe. I was not here to harm him.

Finally, he grew calm. I carefully reached out a hand and gently touched his soft, silky coat. Volpin did not start at my touch; he seemed to grasp my peaceful intentions.

Then suddenly, he leapt to his feet and performed an odd dance for joy, which consisted of running in a tight figure eight. I then shifted into my ghost wolf form and duplicated his dance. Volpin at first seemed surprised by my transformation, then delighted. We continued to entertain each other for a few moments in this way. Minutes ago, he was exhausted. Now he seemed to find boundless energy. And for a moment, the Legion was forgotten, and I gamboled with my new friend in the afternoon sunshine.

But my respite was brief, and I soon realized I had dawdled too long. There remained a world to be saved and a powerful threat to be extinguished.

"Be safe, Volpin," I said as I resumed my natural form. I raised a hand in farewell and started off.

As I glanced back, I saw a look of surprise in Volpin's seemingly intelligent eyes, as if shocked that I was leaving. He then rushed forward and flung himself on the ground before me, his surprised look had given way to one of desperate pleading. I was confused at first. Then I understood what should have been obvious. I prevented the Nightborne nobles from killing him this time, but Volpin was not safe. There would come others, and I could not expect to intercept every expedition bent on hunting him.

I regarded the panicked creature in front of me, begging for his life. But what was I to do? With the threat of the Legion, I simply didn't have the resources to protect a giant fox.

"The last of your kind," I finally said. "That sounds . . . lonely."

I came to send a message to my enemies. Now, it seems, I found an obligation. I can't save him today, only to let him be killed tomorrow. Finally, I came to a decision.

"I'm keeping you," I said. "You'll be safe with me."

Volpin's apparent ability to comprehend my words was uncanny. Again, he leapt into his joyous figure eight dance.

And Volpin apparently felt it appropriate to trade a service for my protection, for he now serves as my mount.

So, to the Nightbourne: Volpin has a protector. And Volpin himself will carry me to meet you in battle.
