This is my most up to date list of requirements for the Vial of the Sands,
This alchemy vial teaches your character to be able to morph into a Sandstone Drake - a fast mount capable of carrying one passenger.

First thing is you need 525 Alchemy (although its not required to loot the recipe from the Canopic jar).

The Recipe: Vial of the Sands is obtained through Archeology. It is contained in the Tol'Vir Common artifact Canopic Jar.
You will need 450 Archeology to find Tol'Vir artifacts and they are found in Uldum only.

The Sand and Pyrium Laced Vial are purchased from a Vendor named Yasmin in Uldum. She is located at the top left corner of the "T" shaped lake in the North West of Uldum.

So the deal as we know it atm is, that yes, you can unlearn alchemy after getting the mount to learn some other prof, but the recipe appears to be learned through discovery and is very, very rare. You might have to be an alchemist for like a year before you get lucky.

Materials wise, i'd expect the sands to be lootable by alchemists from a boss in an instance. Blizz have a lot of their "systems" for loot, badges, rep etc etc all nicely set and following on from wrath.

This IS likely to be the mount-sink in cata like the hog in wrath.

And may I add, in regards to this being compared to the Chopper, that this will be be more intensely awesome.
Why? Because it flys. And flying will be available almost everywhere come Cataclysm. Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor, Outlands and Northrend. (And new areas)
Park yourself in a main city, maybe with a Thunderbrew's Hard Ale or other size increasing consumable.....people may mistake you for a raid boss.

This could actually have a pretty neat quest line to go along with it where an alchemy trainer asks you to try out his new potion he made and when you do you turn into the drake but are stuck as it and have to go to Wyrmrest to see the Dragons there and they each give you a quest to get an item that helps make the antidote after the end of the quest chain you get the fixed recipe that allows you to turn into the drake and back at will.

That it doesn't yet say it requires Alchemy doesn't mean a thing.

Wrong - it means a great deal.

When a player trains an Engineering or Tailoring mount then drops the profession, the mount remains trained and viewable in the spellbook, but it can no longer be used, because the mount requires the profession at the appropriate level.

The vial, however, does not require the profession; in principle, a player could drop a profession, train alchemy up to the level necessary to create it, use the vial, then drop alchemy and STILL be able to turn into a Sandstone Drake.

Is this working as intended or a minor oversight? We will see...

The sand would be 24k. It sells back to vendors for 750g, but things sell back for 1/4 of the price you buy them for.

Tooltip as of 11.28.2010 states the following:

Requires Riding (225)
Use: Teaches you how to transform into a dragon, allowing you to fly very fast and carry an ally on your back.

Anyone else wondering about the wording in the above? From what I understand from the text, it would mean that you can use it at riding skill 225 (slow flying mount skill), gain fast flying skill AND the ability to transform into a dragon.

Or maybe it is just Blizzard slacking on the wording in the tooltips again. Wouldn't be the first time...

I am curious about one thing. Although engineer's choppers are quite expensive they can sell the mounts for gold, therefore making money back on it. I can't see Blizz making this mount so hard and expensive to make for just one time.

Maybe the recipe drops from Tiny Treasure Chest which you get from killing mobs while under the effect of Potion of Treasure Finding. And it only drops for Alchemists at 525.

I have a question about this awesome drake:

Has anyone been able to find any info on whether this mount is usable if you abandon Alchemy? It doesn't say anywhere that it requires alchemy so I am guessing it's possible it still works? I am guessing that using the item will put the sandstone drake spell in the mounts tab?

Just crafted this baby 20mins ago on Ragnaros, Eu. Cost me my roughly 65k gold because rushing to get it, should be cheaper if you craft your own Truegold Bars. Also the mounting seems to be bugged, passenger sits between the front claws. Too bad you cant drop them from the sky cause they get parachutes.

Honestly, I think Alchemists are getting a little ripped off.

Engineering gets unique looking ground and air mounts.
Tailoring gets flying carpets. Very unique.

Alchemy gets this.

Very cool concept, but the model is very disappointing. Not because of the looks. It looks great. It's just the fact that it shares the same model as the other stone drakes in Cataclysm.

For such an expensive mount that is going to take a LOT of gold, time, and effort to acquire, I think alchemists deserve a unique model. Every other profession that produces mounts gets a completely unique model. Why not Alchemy?

This is NOT a 100% drop from the jar if you have 525 alchemy. I opened the jar expecting the recipe to be in there, and it wasn't. :(

Got the pattern today, will be able to craft before the end of the week. This is what it cost me (with no outside/guild help).

Time costs:
35+ hours leveling/searching archy in order to hit max and find the pattern in uldum.
10+ hours herbing to level alch/produce the flasks and violatiles involved.
2 hours fishing to get the fish for the deepstone pots

Gold costs/oppurtunity costs: (my server prices your op. costs may vary)
29k vendor mats
16k+ in Truegold (Just post launch prices)
2k in flasks
160g in oil

10 blown transmute cooldowns (around 5.5k gold on my server at the bare minimum)
unable to sell truegolds for 5k+ first day of expansion.

so just taking these base costs I put my grand total at:
52,660 Gold
if I add Gold per hour oppurtunity cost from my farmer ( around 500g/hour on average) in order to accuire the pattern/craft it.
76,160 Gold!

This mount is a HUGE headache, so causals- think about it long and hard before you farm/grind arch or level alchemy to get this bad boy its the BIGGEST time sink I've ever done in this game.

Ps. Goblin racial will give you a discount on the vendor materials and the materials also seem to be tradable.
So get a goblin to buy them for you (if you are horde).

As far as I can see, this is by far the most epic mount in cataclysm. While the others might be cool, this is just.... mind boggling is proly the best word. You not only need to have an absolutely colossal amount of capital, but either the time or money to collect all the other ingredients... and goddamn is it worth it.

As far as my plan is, I'm going to use mining to get all the mineral requirements, then use my second profession to gather however many metric %^&*tons of herbs I would need to max out alchemy, train alchemy to max, then make as much money as I could while constantly doing max-level archeology sites for the recipe, then make the damn thing and feel very accomplished.

After seeing someone try to sell this mount on Trade (for a price triple its mats, no less), it made me seriously rethink all the work I've been putting in on farming Archaeology on my alchemist.

Before, when it was Bind on Pickup, it was the kind of mount an alchemist could use as a symbol of station. You work incredibly hard to obtain the recipe, you work incredibly hard to earn the gold to afford the materials, and you use so many of your transmutation cooldowns to get the Truegold you require. And the reward was personal, it was unique, and it was worth it.

Now that it's freely tradeable, it's not a sign of how hard you worked. It's not a sign of the effort you put into it. Now, it's merely a novelty mount that carries about as much prestige as the Celestial Steed or Mechano-hog does; which is to say, not much at all. In many circles, even having a mount that costs large quantities of gold gets you accused of gold-buying, and that's never something you can shake off.

It's gone from a one-of-a-kind item that made people think "Wow, I'm glad I'm an alchemist" when it was revealed, down to "yet another goldsink for a novelty item".

it has extra really expensive parts ~29,000g
the recipe comes from archeology in a Canopic Jar and the recipe is BoP
and looks awesome, but not as awesome as this

I'm wary of the controls of this mount. If it works like some of the mammoths in Wrath, I'll avoid it. If it works like any other standard mount, then I'll start saving up money to get it.

I suppose it was somewhat unfair to give one profession such a cool and unique mount, but this change still sucks as an alchemist. I've been saving truegold bars, transmuted from mats farmed myself since day 2. I did this in order to save the gold necessary to buy the vendor mats later on for this mount. I've also been taking time away from gearing up/grinding rep to work on archaeology for the pattern. I was very much looking forward to having a somewhat rare and unique mount from all my hard work. Maybe I wanted it for the wrong reasons - but IMO much of the fun in this game is obtaining unique items that not everyone can get.

Now any fool who buys gold can just spam trade chat "LF someone 2 craft sandspire dragon mount potion! my mats +100g - PST!1" /sigh

On the plus side, now I have no motivation to continue farming for this mount...so I can postpone grinding archaeology, sell my 6 truegold bars at 1800g a pop (were going for 5k last week >.<), and hang on to the 30,000 gold I've set aside for the vendor and flask mats.

On some level, I thought this change was coming. In my experience, Blizzard can't give one particular race, class, professions, etc anything too cool, or an unbearable sh*t storm of QQ will follow. Still, disappointing nonetheless.

This is the most up-to-date information I could find, most of which can be found in related pages. Just thought I'd put it all together. =)
I also suggest Elixir Mastery until you're finished with the flasks, and then switching to Transmute Mastery. Talk to the quest giver of your current mastery and pay a 150g fee. Then talk to the quest giver of the next mastery and instantly get the new one. Bonus items are received about 20% of the time, up to four extra items.
Transmute Master - Zarevhi, in Stormspire in Netherstorm.
Elixir Master - Lorokeem, in Shattrath City.
Transmute Living Elements is also affected by this bonus and depending on where you are can have predictable outcomes, excluding the bonus itself.
Mount Hyjal- Volatile Fire
Vashj'ir- Volatile Water
Deepholm- Volatile Earth
Uldum- Volatile Air

*EDIT* Yasmin is not affected by any Rep discounts. Goblins this means you too. However, Guild level 24 MAY reduce these costs by 10%. I have not been able to find any reliable info on that though.

I'm very confused and would like a clean answer. Once the Vial is created, can anyone, including those without alchemy, consume/use it? The Vial of Sands itself only says the following:

- Requires Level 80
- Requires Riding (225)
- Item Level 85

And since they changed it to BoE...

Would any kind soul shed a light on this for me?

This mount is a very impressive piece of Alchemy. If you Alchemy specialized players are thinking of creating this mount, heres a very helpfull list and a few tips for ya.
Tip 1: You must have max Archaeology to learn this. It is learned randomly during Alchemy work,
but the items that have a chance to show you are unknown by me, but are most likely Flasks.

Tip 2: Go Transmutation Mastery. Your able to sometimes make more than 1 product from 1 set of mats!

Tip 3: This is a list of mats all broke down, so if your going to do this, read the list and then decide on what course of action you would like to take!

Cata = Relates to anything released in the Cataclysm expansion.

x 1 | 5000g from Yasmin <innkeeper> in Uldum
x 8 ......................| 24000g for all from Yasmin <inkeeper> in Uldum
x 120.......................| Farmable off of Cata fire elementals.
x 120.........................| Farmable off of Cata air elementals.

Tip 4: The cooldown on transmuting really takes a good chunk of time, so if your going to head down the made-from-scratch lane, expect a long walk.

Tip 5: If you skip transmuting and buy the materials yourself, this will go plently faster, but it will cost more. This is where you can ask yourself, would i rather spend the time farming this, or buy all the mats myself.

Tip 6: Farm herbs in Tol Barad. This area has every type of herb in a small area that enables you to gather your herbs quickly as opposed to the large terrain of Vashj'ir

Tip 7: Before you farm elementals for Volatiles, use a so you have a better chance to get the materials and you can get done faster.

I've seen some people say that there are only four Tol'vir dig sites. That is incorrect. Yes, you can only get up to four at a time, but there are eight or nine different Tol'vir sites which can spawn. According to wowdigs.com's dig site list, there are 9 Tol'vir sites and 63 total in Kalimdor.

When a new Kalimdor dig site spawns, and you currently have no Tol'vir sites available, you have a 15% chance of the new spawn being Tol'vir.
If you have one Tol'vir site already available, the chance of the new spawn being Tol'vir is 13.3%.
If you have two, the chance is 11.7%.
If you have three, the chance is 10%.

Having Tol'vir sites already available to you diminishes your probability of getting another one on a new spawn. Due to this, it might not be a good idea to try to "load up" on them. If you get one, you should dig it as soon as possible. For instance, when I'm in northern Kalimdor and a Tol'vir site spawns, instead of working my way south and doing sites along the way, I hearth to Stormwind and then take the portal to Uldum. The probability differences may not seem like a lot, but due to the amount of grinding involved in this endeavor, it could save you a bit of time.

Some observations on the Vial of the Sands and the Sandstone Drake:

- If someone uses a Potion of Illusion next to someone transformed into a Sandstone Drake, they will themselves turn into a Sandstone Drake that cannot fly! For added hilarity, the imbiber of the Potion of Illusion can then 'mount' the other Drake if they're in the same party for some . . . interesting graphical results.

- You can eject your passenger while still keeping your flight transformation active by using the below macro command:

/run EjectPassengerFromSeat(1)

They will get a parachute, but if they're above lava or far out into fatigue it won't help that much.

UPDATE: If you log off while you have a passenger, they won't get a parachute! Say goodbye to non-engineers/mages/priests/paladins as they go SPLAT!

- If the passenger chooses to eject from the Drake on their own, they DO NOT get a parachute! Try taking your worst enemy (or best friend) for a flight high above, then tell them you have to go afk for a bit and see what choice they make!

- If you type /mountspecial while on the ground, you will do a nice animation of a roar.

- When you run on the ground, you make the same footstep sounds as a Core Hound - BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM

Ok, I got mine today and its a little buggy to say the least! When a player mounts you, they appear in the sitting position, but under you, kinda like you are holding them in your front legs/arms.

I dont think this is intended as it looks wierd and there is a saddle.

Also, /mountspecial does an animation, but with no noise. /dance /cry /etc ofcourse do nothing, but they do reset the idle animation, so maybe they will be used, who knows...

I think there is more to come for this and for the cost/likely continued rarity due to said cost I think it probably should.

Well will have to wait and see!

Got the recipe on Sunday, finished assembling the mats on Monday.

Monday I made 4 mounts for people charging 3K gold with their mats. The lack of a CD is very nice.
I also put one up at auction for 55K, which I eventually took down and sold for 49K.
I estimate my day one profit at 21k, maybe a bit less as I spent a bit of money for Truegold CD's and volatiles are still quite pricey.

I am currently assembling mats for 2 Vials now with the likely intent of keeping one for myself. I should have the next Vial complete tonight to go up on Auction again.

Although this was an extremely annoying grind to get the recipe, it appears to be paying dividends. At this point I know of only one other person on my server with the recipe, and that person does not appear to be marketing much or advertising much. I have talked to seeral achemists still trying for this and a few have mentioned they may just give up and get me to make them the mount.

For me I had to craft the base 7 commons, a 150 fragment rare and an additional 10 commons to get the recipe, 915 fragments with only perhaps 4 Hieroglyphs (I had very poor luck with those). One poor fellow on my server has made 5 jars with no recipe.

I got the Vial of Sands recipe the other day after my third canopic jar. Took five days of 12 hours a day grinding. Over 3000 fragments and it's the only time getting 2 rares would annoy someone. Worth it in every way. I just made my mount and found a few things out.

!) the passenger seat is bugged. At the moment you dont site on top, but rather you sit midair at the claws.

2) Using an ironboot flask while mounted turns you into a cracked out, flying dwarf.

3) If someone uses a potion of illusion near you then they turn into a non-flying sandstone drake.

The recipe grind and mats are not for the faint of heart. Please give some respect to those who did the grind for this. Going for a 5k tip on both of my servers and it's not comparable to the chopper because the grind for this is much worse than a grind to exalted.

Just got this beauty on Wildhammer-EU Horde.
It still has the same bug as Drakes do, so if some friend of yours mount you, he/she will appear under the mount, and hanging at your claws.

Having recently obtained this mount, I figured I would share my experience with the people who, like me, are usually happy to see more than 1000g. Consider it a beginners guide and a tale of my experience as well. I hope it helps.

To start off, for you who never see more than a few thousand gold at a time, this is not impossible! You just need a dash of dedication, and a will strong enough not to go *Balls to this*

The base materials themselves are 29,000g as previously said, but on top of that, you will need some rather exotic materials. Truegold will be a major money sink. So I give you this simple hint, one many will go *But I do not like it* but this is what I did. Take up mining.

Elementium on my server, (Argent Dawn EU) goes for 180g a stack, and whilst I cannot speak for the economies of other servers, the nodes have a good chance of yielding the Volatile Elements which sell just as well and will be useful later.. I used this route.

That is courtesy of the Wowhead user jjhilly, give him/ her the credit. With that route I was able to procure about 30 stacks in a 4 hour farming session. I recommend music and or, pizza. When you mine, you will come across the Volatile elements of water, fire or earth, which you will want to amass in large quantities. Every 30 or so stacks I would drop them on the AH, and they would be sold by morning.

Another reason I say take mining is the chance of Volatile Elements and Pyrite. These are key ingredients in Transmuting Truegold, and by doing so, you can save yourself 1000g per bar of Truegold, assuming people sell their Cooldowns for fair prices. Volatile air is obtainable from some sort of, engineering doo-dad that helps gather air from mining and skinning, or you could buy it from the AH, I would guess for roughly 30g per 1, (Again, using my servers economy). However for those of you who have plenty of time or are tanks, queue for Vortex Pinnacle, it can yield 10 Volatiles a time if youre lucky. If you can, do it with friends, and ask them to pass the Airs over to you. Clear up to Altarius and reset, because after that, the mobs wont drop the air.

As you slowly create your truegold bars and sell your elementium, you will, hopefully, see your wealth increasing, if only marginally at first. I say this, get your Truegold out the way, you will need 12 bars. After the Truegold, maybe use some of your wealth to get the Flasks.

Flask of the Winds are about 250g per, on my server, and you will need 8.
Flask of Titanic Strength are about 300g per, again, you need 8.
Stoneskin Oil. 15g per 1. you need 8.

Whilst assembling these, make sure you keep dedicated to your route of mining! Yes, other people may be there, but the nodes will respawn, and youre guaranteed something, I know, I play the most populated EU server.

Now its the final 29k push, and if you have been mining like you should, you should have a little left over. I had enough to buy the Pyrium Laced Crystaline Vial, thats 5k off the total. Dont think of it in terms of money, think of it in items *Okay, I need just 8 Sands of time now* and it seems a little less daunting.

All in all, it took me a week of 5 hour farming sessions and selling Volatiles on the trade channel to get this mount. Offer a generous tip to the craftsman, (I paid 1k) and fly away.

Worth every second. I did not make this comment to gloat, and some of you will have better, more buisness like ways of making gold. So you pull in 5000g an hour, I made this comment for the people who do not have such skill and may want a push in the right direction.

Edit- They took away my map, so I will simplify it as flying around the northern edge, down the western mountains, cutting over to the first cliffs you come across, flying over the vally with the diseased birds, and coming back up to the north-eastern most corner of the northern mountain range.

Edit 2 - I realise the prices are slightly exagerated, what with Cata now common place and the materials now being sold at a much more reasonable price, including the ore, but I would still stick to this method if only for the money and the volatiles you can mine.

Anyone else think the recipe is a wee bit ridiculous drop? I mean first you have to have Tol'vir sites spawn, which only spawn in Uldum. Then you have to have the jar come up to build it and then you might actually have the chance of finding this recipe. Kinda reminds me of an old episode of Futurama where Fry's nephew finds oil in the basement of the mansion he won in the lottery.

I just got the Vial of the Sands Recipe on Nesingwary my first canopic jar I opened. And I can attest that a RL friend on Blades Edge got it his very first jar as well. Perhaps we are just super lucky though who knows.

The recipe is from http://www.wowhead.com/item=64657/canopic-jar (the pattern is BoP) and you get the flasks from alchemy, truegold can be obtain from Alchemy as well with the transmution CD. The other mats (costly ones) are from http://www.wowhead.com/npc=49406.

Raw mats by itself are 29k, although after putting in several tickets asking GMs, they have all confirmed that "Bartering" (the guild perk the reduces the cost of vendor items by 10%) should apply to the mats. Making the raw mats 26100gold.

It is BoE so anyone can have it. I'm not sure if you drink it and get a dragon form, or you have use the vial constantly to mount. I do know its 1.5 cast so I imagine you would have to use the vial. Once in dragon form you can allow people to jump on you and act as a passenger. You can not kick off the passenger but you can have some fun by un-mounting and slowfalling down( or using birdform) and watch as your passenger dies xD

Just to clear up any misconceptions, this mount is not an instant cast. I'm not sure if this is intended or not, but I just made one today. Also, it is bugged just like the other dragon mounts: your passenger is 'sitting' under your neck.

And an edit: If you fly up high and 'shapeshift,' you will fall to your death - but your passenger will get a nifty little parachute. Also, if you try to strand a low-level friend on top of something and they don't have a way to fly, they will get a parachute as they jump off, as well.

Also, I confirmed that your passenger can be any level.

It took me about 2 weeks to farm the gold and materials for this mount, i sold it in the AH for 90k and bought the materials over again so i could make my friend one too. The drake currently has the same glitch as all the other stone drakes (you appear below the claws and floating) but only to the person riding you. Also -a dissapointment- Taurens turn into the same size drake that everyone else turns into, its not bigger like most mounts taurens use.

Hi all,
Got this today and I can tell you the following.

- It has no unique mounting animation
-It has no special animations besides /mountspecial like other drakes.
-You cannot herb while in drake form, you will get dismounted.
-It walks with the same sound as a corehound.
-You cannot cast spells, fish or do anything you couldnt do on a regular mount with it.

I think thats it really, anymore questions and I will answer them.

Note also that it is just a re-colored Stone Drake. It does not have a unique skin like the Hog/Chopper. So think carefully before you invest in this gold sink. Also, in about a week, they will probably be a lot around, so as far as bragging rights go. This mount will lose them quite fast.

Its still nice for people with lazy partners

Reportedly, if you fly into Netherwing Ledge in Shadowmoon Valley while shapeshifted you'll get a "Can't mount while shapeshifted" error message, and be transformed into a Shadowmoon orc swimming through the air at mounted speed.

Have yet to determine what would happen if you had a passenger at the time.

Someone made a joke somewhere in this thread or a related one about the Iron Boot Flask.You can indeed use it while mounted, and this mount is no exeption. About 7 mins ago, I was flying around as a dwarf. I will try to post a screen shot. You have to mount THEN drink the flask. I almost died laughing.

I got this mount earlyer and i can conferm that there is a easy way to strand people without flying on high places, you simply fly about 5 feet above that place and dismount, they lose the para when they land and you and fly off on a diff mount.
also if you use any trans that dosnt kick you off your mount you can use it on this one, and it will overwrite its imige with the new one, so flying blood-elf = win.

Funny when people start calling hacks on your bad flying self.

If you are in drake form, when you pass through the areas in shadowmoon valley that would normally turn you into a Fel orc on a Netherdrake, you will turn into a flying orc.

I'm wondering, is it possible to kick people of the mount? I tried with a low level (68), I was in group with him, but then I kicked him and he was aswell kicked off the mount.

I recently tryed it again, on a high-level (85) and this method did not work. Anyone got any better suggestion?

Long answer: Not even sure anyone said it. From my experience, you CANNONT use this "mount" in places where you may not use flying mounts. Obviously, there are far fewer of these now in Cata, but some include (Once again, from my experiences) arena, Blood elf starting areas, and battlegrounds. Whats interesting is that the Recruit a friend rocket (which I have), IS usable in no fly zones.

This leads me to believe that the Sandstone Drake is strictly considered a flying mount. This may or may not be working as intended, but im thinking it is not working as intended.

Short answer: No.

I make this Mount and sell it for 53 k, I make about 15 k profit when I make it on my shammy and it sells allmost right way.I can make more but i end paying for truegold CDs . but now sense things are cooling down as far as selling gear, mounts goes.I May just start holding out and make even more and farm everything .I know a few players that let me use there truegold cd no charge everyday and even give me anything over what they make, them being xmute spec.

I was under the impression that the actual vial was either BoP, or required alchemy 525, so that only alchemists could obtain this mount. Now it appears that anyone with enough gold and an alchemist friend can get it. Was it always like this or did Blizzard change it so that anyone could get this mount?

I have not seen this question asked, so I will go ahead, since I've been wondering:

Many of the achievement protodrakes / other mounts grant the rider the Master Riding skill automatically, allowing travel at 310% speed (at least, I'm almost certain that they do).

Does anyone know if this mount does the same? For the amount of awesome packed into it, not to mention the amount of gold and other materials it takes to craft it, I say that it certainly should.

I read through some comments but couldn't find an answer to a probably really silly question (which is maybe why no one has asked), here goes:

Is there any chance that this item can at all possibly proc' another one when created? I don't know what the item is classed as/under in the alchemy profession (elixir, potion, transmutem other, etc), I would assume Transmute though.

I ask because I'm currently an elixir master, but I don't really sell my stuff. I became Elix. master mostly to proc elixirs and flasks which I used mostly in TBC for myself and gave to guildmates. I might have to sell my wares and herbs now to be able to buy the mats in preparation to someday get this, but for now I'm really casual and am not the farm type....basically I take my time, there's no rush for me. That being said, it wouldn't really kill me to switch from elixir to transmutes, in other words - and assuming so many will just want to buy this thing, who knows maybe an extra will proc for me :) IF it actually does proc.

So I just got my vial of the sands yesterday ( finally after farming mats and money for 2 weeks) and was beyond sadden to find that I did NOT get an achievement/feat of strength for it. WHAAAAT? Given how ridiculously difficult this was to get, couldn't we at least get a meager 10pt achievement for it?

Also, in guild achievements it shows when someone gets or makes an epic item, such as looting a purple from a heroic, however my obtaining my vial of the sands and being able to turn myself into a dragon (woohoo!) did not even show up as a blip on the radar. Again, WHAAAAAT?

I'm hoping there was a bug and we really are supposed to get an achievement. Does anyone know what the status of this is?

Just got the recipe so I am unsure as to how much it goes for now. I did see one in AH for 45 k for like a week, then the person dropped it to 44k but I don't think that sold either. I tried charging 3k for making it but 2 people never responded after asking me and one person said that he was being charged 500 by another person (although he did say it was his friend). So I am wondering, is 3k overpriced?

I created one of these to see if it would sell at 50-60k. I made it late on a friday night and while I had some interest I did not sell it till early on sunday morning for 50k. I then made another and it sold within 45minutes of the first one. I then made another drake which sold that evening. I made a 4th drake which sold again within 45mintues of the last one(actually had a buyer before I had all the mats). All 4 sold for 50k each. I now posses a 5th drake for sale. When they stop selling it will be mine , but not untill! I seriously rocked the economy on my server yesterday. With the 4 drakes I sold and 5th made I removed almost 120k from the server forever(vendor mats). I single handedly drove the price of Truegold from 900g upto 1500g by the days end. I profited around 15k per drake sold. I love this mount!

1-23-2011 is now known as "Golden Sunday" when I made 60k+ in one day

Update: 2 more drakes sold , that makes 6 drakes in 4 days

I don't see this anywhere so I thought I should mention it: I've found that Iron Boot Flask and Orb of the Sin'dorei works while being in drake form. As an iron dwarf you swim through the air and as a blood elf you actually run through the air with long strides, like you have when you run at the ocean floor in Vashj'ir.

Your passenger, if you have one, ends up on your arm.

I have now solved 28 Canopic Jars and still no recipe. I have now closed my account which will be expiring March 3rd. I have tunnel visioned this damn RNG/RNG/RNG so long that I have completely lost all interest in this game. For those who don't believe me I will post screens and totals once/if I get the recipe.

As of now I have over 20K NE frags and 12K Fossil, I have quit solving all artifacts except Tol'Vir

This is the worst grind I have ever experienced in any game. Normally I really enjoy this game, however it is now dead to me.

Every time I've tried that the auction-botters snatch anything you put on the neutral AH for anything much less than its normal going price. Because they're bots, they snatch the auction within a few milliseconds of you placing it, so it's gone by the time you click on the Auctioneer to pick the item up on your alt.

I complained to the GMs about it but they just said bad luck, you're not supposed to be trading between Alliance and Horde and using auction-snatching bots isn't against the rules apparently, so too bad.

So if you want to trade between Alliance and Horde, I suggest putting it in the AH at the normal prices.

you can put it on AH on normal or high price and sending the Gold back by posting a junk item at the same amount of gold and buy it on your other character. you won't be too low priced and you can keep your gold balanced

I don't spam trade but throw a "Looking for" 3-4 times per day during peak hours, finding an alchemist on my server is harder then actually trying to get Uldum dig sites to pop up.

Getting the mats took 2 minutes but getting it made is going on 3 days and counting till I find the recipe (medium/high pop server)

Got mine yesterday. Very nice. I bought some flasks and transmuted others (some flasks on AH was more cheap than craft it), transmuted all Truegolds (easy as Transmute Master) and asked a goblin to buy the expensive Sands of Times and the Vial. Searched for someone yesterday morning to transmute it for me, someone wanted 2000g for the job... and at night looked again and got it (paid 1000g for the work).

As of 4.0.6, Iron Boot flask and the orb does not turn you into a flying dwarf/elf. Dang you blizz for actually fixing something...

Also, as a Sandstone Drake you are immune to hex/polymorph. Enjoy!

There is one thing that u will save around 30% from vial of sands (ea) (Sands of Time) and pyrium-laced crystalline vial (Pyrium-Laced Crystalline Vial) so instead of paying 3k*8 + 5k = 24k + 5k = 29k g only for the sands/vial. u will be able to pay only 2,1k*8 + 3.5k = 16,8k +3.5k = 20300 g. just from the goblin class (20% cut) and the lvl 24 guild perk (bartering, 10% cut) so if ur guilds lvl is 23 and ur about to buy the stuffs, wait for lvl 24 and ull get it maybe 3k cheaper

Every time I've tried that the auction-botters snatch anything you put on the neutral AH for anything much less than its normal going price. Because they're bots, they snatch the auction within a few milliseconds of you placing it, so it's gone by the time you click on the Auctioneer to pick the item up on your alt.

I complained to the GMs about it but they just said bad luck, you're not supposed to be trading between Alliance and Horde and using auction-snatching bots isn't against the rules apparently, so too bad.you can put it on AH on normal or high price and sending the Gold back by posting a junk item at the same amount of gold and buy it on your other character. you won't be too low priced and you can keep your gold balanced

Neutral AH has a 15% cut. If you trade items for 20k gold, after transfering to other faction and re-gaining money by selling junk item, AH cuts will reduce it to 14 450g.

NOTE: the recipe for this is from archealogy (Tol'vir) and can be made from alchemist's the cheapest way to get it right now on my server is just get the recipe and mats give it to a alchemist and he'll make it for ya (or if its a greedy guy that does nothing but just make stuff then post on AH for $$$) then to buy the Vial of the Sands of the AH

luckly for me i am cruising around on a Sandstone Drake hope the stuff above will help Alchemists in getting the recipe and those who cant decide whats cheaper but thats on my realm idk bout Ravenholdt,Dragonblight,Bonechewer,etc.

I farmed this recepie for about 200 hours, finaly i gave up, now im searching for normal crafter whit normal fee.. Blah, hate it...

It is amazing to me all of the people who complain about being greedy and selling things on the auction house. If you can't pay for it, or, don't want to pay for it, then don't.

You just said yourself that you had spent 200hrs trying to farm the recipe....how much is that 200hrs worth? You could have farmed enough gold in that time to buy it or to put together the mats to have it made.

Some may have gotten lucky to have this recipe drop early, but, for some of us, we work for a very long time. Maybe, some of us would like to get a return for that time - instead of giving it away for nearly nothing.

If someone doesn't want to farm the recipe or the materials to get this made, then pay the auction house premium - that's a normal business model - not greed.

If the rider logs out, they'll log back in in the middle of the air (and fall)

After spending more days combing Kalimdor than I care to admit, constructing endless Elven and Fossil artifacts, as they say, "I found a guy." That is, someone trustworthy on my server who was willing to make the Vial of Sands, given the materials.

I belong to a 2 person guild, but we had the means to make the Truegold and the Flasks. Coming up with the other 29k gold for the Sands of Time and Pyrium-laced Vial was harder, and it looked like it'd take me weeks if not months (esp. since I was simultaneously trying to upgrade my gear to PvP and raid quality).

Then one day an epic shield dropped in Tol Barad -- off a trash mob. Sold it for 15k (another small miracle). At that point, with a small loan from a good friend, I was able to buy all the vendor-provided mats. I tipped in extra Truegold bars.

I know. It's a ridiculous amount of in-game gold, but it's still the best 29k I ever spent. It's been months since Cata went live, but there aren't very many of us Sandstone Drakes around on my server, and I've come close a couple times to macro'ing an explanation as to why there wasn't anybody on my back.

when i want to transfer money between horde and alliance i find someone on the other side with both types of chars who has enough money, and give him my money on one side for his on the other; no auction house cut.

I finally got this recipe. I spent about two months doing nothing but archaeology, playing approximately two hours per day. I found it in my ninth canopic jar. I had completed almost exactly 600 archaeology projects by that point. Only missing the four epic weapons (plus the six new rares added for 4.1).

Get burgy blackhearts handsome hat from vash'jir use vial of sands.... equip the hat and ta dahh your a flying gnome u can also get other people to mount u while in this form and u can run around with them in your arms its a very intresting glitch why not try it out yourself. Thortok's guide to getting a Vial of the Sands!

Sandstone Drake. Two passenger flying mount. You actually transform into a dragon that has nobody sitting on your back, and can fly around that way or offer someone in your group a ride on your back. Don't have to be an Alchemist to become a dragon. Do have to be an Alchemist (and an Archaeologist) to make a vial. Don't have to own one to ride on someone else. Gives an achievement to have it: Vial of the Sands.

(Alchemists Only) Get to (at least) 450 Archaeology, and 525 Alchemy.
(Alchemists Only) Continue to do Archaelogy on the Kalimdor continent, specifically Tol'vir digsites if possible, until you get Canopic Jar. Good luck!
(Alchemists Only) Open your Canopic Jar and hope it contains a Recipe: Vial of the Sands, and if so, then learn it. Good luck! Repeat Steps 2 and 3 as necessary. While it is possible for the recipe to appear even if you are not yet at 525 Alchemy, it will only appear to Alchemists of a certain level of skill; so I recommend staying on the safe side and getting to 525 Alchemy first. You'll need it anyway to actually learn the recipe!
Gather 12x Truegold, 8x Flask of the Winds, 8x Flask of Titanic Strength, and 8x Deepstone Oil. Hopefully you can figure out how to do this on your own.
Save up 29000 gold or the following items: Pyrium-Laced Crystalline Vial will cost 5000 gold. 8x Sands of Time will cost 3000 gold each for a total of 24000 gold. These mats can only be bought from Yasmin in the far northwest of Uldum. Finding any of these mats for cheaper than the listed price on the Auction House is unlikely, but possible*, so make sure you check because it could save you money. Obviously, don't buy them for more than the listed price. Duh.
The mats from Steps 4 and 5 will be used to make the vial. If you are not an Alchemist, you will need to find one that has completed Step 3 and you'll have to give them the mats to make it.**

*The mats in Step 5 are bought from a vendor so the guild perk Bartering can be used for a discount. No other forms of discounts are currently known. If you do not have this perk, you can check the Auction House to see if someone who does is selling at a discount. Since it could potentially save you money, why not check?

**Make sure you protect yourself! If you get scammed, GM's can and will take action to get your gold and/or mats back, just open a ticket. In order for them to confirm it was a scam, make sure the entire transaction is negotiated using in-game text chat so the GM can read the chat log and confirm that you have been scammed. (Hopefully this won't happen anyway, but 29k+ in mats is a respectable chunk of money, so make sure to cover your bases.) This 'scam protection' is provided for all forms of scams, including the 'give you the mats to make an item and you keep them and give me nothing' scam, as scamming is against the ToS!

I recommend, for Alchemists making this for yourself, after you make your first one, check your realm to see if there's anyone willing to buy this for extremely high prices (like, 60k or higher, perhaps even 80k). If you get enough profit, make another one and attempt to sell it. Keep going until you don't get any buyers for awhile, making and selling one by one, and then if you go a long time and can't sell your current one for a profit, THEN learn it yourself.

I reckon crafting fees to be around 500-1500g nowadays. Provided that the customer provides all materials.
There is no cooldown when creating the vials. You can spam your gold away!
~~I can confirm that with Bartering and Best Deals Anywhere the vendor materials cost 16800 + 3500 = 20300g. (Patch 4.1).~~
Blizzard did not like the goblin racial affecting the price of this so they set the minimum price to: 21600 + 4500 = 26100g.
Putting the vendor materials on the AH/Neutral AH costs LOADS.
This is probably one of the best ways of transfering gold between servers.
As of 4.1 there is an achievement for obtaining and learning the dragon (Vial of the Sands). Keeping it in your inventory won't work.
Recipe: Vial of the Sands for learning to create this mount this is thought to have around 9.5% drop chance from Canopic Jar (Tol'vir Archeology) according to this wowhead survey. RNG is however RNG, and only RNGesus can control it.
Putting the finished mount on AH costs 7.5g per 24 hours.
The craft can NOT procc. It doesn't matter whether your elixir/potion/transmution. All alchemists with the required skill can learn and craft it.
As of 4.0.6 you can no longer use shapeshift items while in 'drake-form'.
To eject a passenger, use the following macro:

I discovered a few amusing bugs with this item when used with http://http://www.wowhead.com/item=65665/burgy-blackhearts-handsome-hat

By using the mount, then wearing the hat, you become a flying ghost gnome. Furthermore, people can ride you and while they are you can dance and flip them around.

My favourite is this:
1. Use the mount.
2. Wear the hat.
3. Log out.
4. Log back in, and you should be a ghost gnome riding the the "ghostified" Sandstone Drake. If you take the hat off, you will become a Sandstone Drake on top of another Sandstone Drake. People can also ride you while in this state, and can even use a Potion of Illusion and you have two Sandstone Drakes on top of one.

I hope you enjoy these bugs as I have, as there's a chance they'll be removed. =(

Edit: As of Patch 4.2, these have unfortunately been removed.

With 4.1, the Best Deals Anywhere of goblins does NOT apply to the 29'000 Gold you have to spend for the items of Yasmin.
Using a goblin won't help you to save money anymore.
In contrast, the bonus of Bartering saves you the 10% now anyway, so having a guild with level 24 really makes the Vial of the Sands about 2'900 Gold cheaper.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned, but if you have a Potion of Illusion, and use it next to someone who is using this you then turn into the drake, but are unable to fly, instead you just jump; but you are able to go into banks, AH, basicially anywhere because you are not mounted, just in the form of a mount.

Got my recipe in my 4th canopic jar, if I didn't I probably woulda gave up. I thought Id make a ton of gold selling these, but on my server Agamaggan US, Ive only sold one so far on ah, and only crafted one for someone. Both only making like 1.5k profit.

Its almost more lucrative just to craft truegolds and flask and sell them instead of risking 26100 in vendor mats to sell for 36k on ah. And only get like 34200.

I thought if I found this recipe I would sell a ton of these, but I guess not on a low pop server. Oh well at least I made some gold, and made one for myself.

Pricing on my server: Agamaggan US

26100 Vendor mats
avg truegold price 500x12 = 6000
rough avg flask price 100x16 = 1600
8 deepstones = 200g

Total estimated value of mats = 33-34K

So dont b*atch about having to spend 35 or 36k for one if your not an alchemist. The VALUE of the mats = 34K at LEAST in my opinon. Not to mention at least a 1k crafting fee for the major PITA charge for finding the recipe.

~~Interesting facts for shadow priests; You can deactivate Shadowform while mounted but not activate.~~ And while mounted and using Dispersion, you will fly around as the Dispersion animation.

As of patch 4.3 above statement is invalid, you can now put on Shadowform while transformed, same goes for Tarecgosa's Visage. Italic is still the same.

I don't think you really understand what it takes to farm this recipe.

Archaeology 450 just to start.
Farming Tol'vir digsites, which have a ~40% chance to spawn in Kalimdor.
Hoping for a Canopic Jar dig from Tol'vir (out of many possible spawns).
Hoping that said Canopic Jar actually drops the recipe (estimated at 10% drop rate).

It's triple RNG. Many alchemists (including myself) finished all of the Night Elf and Fossil rares before ever seeing the recipe, over a period of five months of farming semi-regularly.

So yeah, you will excuse me if I want a decent tip for putting in that much effort.

Very noobish question here: If you're a priest in Shadowform, and you activate this mount transformation, do you keep the Shadowform dark blue/faded coloration, or do you default to the standard coloration of the dragon? Thanks.

I won't do it for less than 2k. Why?

For starters, as mentioned, this requires maxed Alchemy and more Archaeology than anyone should ever do. 450 skill to start, ~15% chance for an Uldum dig site, ~15% chance when you start a new dig that it ends up being a canopic jar and a 10% chance to get the recipe in the jar once completed. It's could literally take hundreds of hours.

But most importantly, getting the mats requires almost no work whatsoever and only goes to take profits away from the people crafting them. Server economies will vary, but on mine:

-Truegolds cost about the same to craft as they cost on the AH
-The flasks costs less than they cost to craft (based on AH prices for herbs)
-The rest of the items are vendor fodder.

So, I spend hundreds of hours getting the skill levels and the recipe. The customer spends some cash in the AH and flies all the way to a vendor in the upper left hand corner of Uldum. If I gather my own materials, I stand to make ~10-15k profit including the level 24 guild vendor price markdown and maybe the occasional transmute master Truegold proc (though, overall, it's still a better use of my cooldown to turn volatiles into air so I just buy them). Or, a customer can go run the errands for 5 minutes and I stand to get nothing?

2k seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Edit: If you're downrating this, then you're either not reading it or you haven't spent the countless hours farming the recipe. The only hard part of getting this mount is the recipe and the person getting it should be compensated for it. Hundreds of hours is not an exaggeration. It's the average. Someone getting their own mats for it and expecting someone to do the combine for them is almost an insult.

AFTER getting maxxed Alchemy and Archaeology, with the fastest flying mount, you can expect to spend roughly 20 hours of straight Archaeology to get each canopic jar. Each jar has a 10 percent chance to drop the recipe if you have alchemy. Using some basic math, you can see that more than 50% of the population would require more than 7 canopic jars to get the recipe. That's an average of 140 hours AFTER leveling the skills just for the recipe.

It's not "one click". It's many thousands of clicks that you're paying for.

Finally just managed to get this recipe after a solid 6 day farming matathon of around 16-20 hours a day.
I'd attempted it before when I first levelled up my archaeology so i had already unlocked all the rares on Kalimdor but the thing that by far makes getting this recipie the hardest/most tedious is the relentless flying around you have to do and the low chance of actually getting a tol'vir dig site as opposed to a Nelf, fossil or Troll.
Even then you still need to actually need to be lucky enough to get the jar to be able to solve. At one point I had about 5 cat satues in a row... Pretty much was ready to quit at that point but I managed to summon enough sanity and patience to be able to get me through it.

Basically, if you don't have an epic flyer (which isn't alot of people these days, but still...) don't even BOTHER attempting to get this recipie as 99% of the time you will spend flying around kalimdor and trust me, even at 310% speed it feels slow as hell.
If you have little patience or an agreesive/manic disposition... Forget it. The amount of times I raged hard at not getting an Uldum digsite or the jar puzzle just was not healthy and I'm a pretty naturally chilled person :-/
Granted, you might get lucky (damn you bastards that got it first jar... Damn you to HELL!) but it's unlikely. That's pretty much the reason I started farming was because I read about how some people manage to get it fairly quickly but trust me, you probably won't... I've read quite alot of accounts of people that have farmed longer than I have to get it... Screw that! I was actually getting ready to give up when it finally looted.

The chance of getting the recipie (so I've read) is 3%... Which may seem ok on the face of things but when you factor in time flying between dig sites (trust me, you'll be flying from uldum up to around ashenvale and back ALOT), the location of the actual digsites (most of mine ended up being in ashenvale, winterspring, azshara and feralas) and the fact that each puzzle you recieve itself is random and THEN the chance of actually getting the item itself... Makes the whole thing pretty *!@# really.

My advice is that if you really wanna do this is to run dual monitors or have a tv nearby and do a marathon of your favourite tv show/films or whateveras it really takes the edge off having something to focus on whilst mindlessly flying around and clicking. I blasted through the whole of Farscape and Stargate Atlantis whilst farming for this damn thing!
Also, as a druid it was a massive advantage having my teleport to moonglade as i started up north and rinsed through the digsites heading south and then ported back up to moongland to repeat the process. If you're lucky you should be able to push most of the digsites down south and end up with at least 2 or 3 in uldum when you reach there.
There's also that item from caverns of time which teleports you to tanaris but I didn't really use it all that much as my method with being a druid worked quite well.

Still. All in all I'd say that it's worth it.
At the end of the day, I farmed the Winterspring mount back in classic and that took three mindnumbing WEEKS! At least you can sell this mount or charge to craft it which makes it a nice little earner as well as looking awesome.

Given my guilds standing (not level 24) and rep standing I did the math on how much it would cost me to buy the materials and give the accepted 2k tip. When I looked on the AH there was one fore sale for less.

I for one think that Alchemists are getting royally screwed when it comes to this enchant, on my server at least. The above mention vial was on short duration so I could have bid on it and got it for nearly 3k less, I didn't I brought it outright becuase I felt sorry for this guys whose probably been trying to sell this for ages and has had to drop his prices so much just in the hopes to break even.

So to anyone out there who thinks this is an overpriced item, think again. The person who created it has spent some serious money, not to mention countless hours just to get the ability to make it. So they deserve more respect and understanding when it comes to this potion. Blizzard made it so that this was supposed to be a huge money sink so that is or when you get it you are not one of a million others on your server who has it.

I sold 6 of these on the AH early Cata at a price of 46k and up. I would use the margin to buy more sands/vial and then farm out the rest. I found this to be a more effective way of selling Truegold & herbs/flasks than putting them on the AH raw. The reasoning, less competition, by crafting them into something more rare. Now at the waiting days for mists, I find this to be less than useful. People are less willing to pay top dollar and more are willing to farm out the mats themselves to pass time.

At least it makes truegold and flasks more valuable than their increasingly diminishing profit margins raw.

The mount lacks practicality. How often do you need or even have the opportunity to ferry people distances by sky? Auto-FP learning has also sapped even more usefulness out.

Peculiarly, I noticed today that if you fly into water as the Sandstone Drake, the mount buff changes to say that it only increases ground speed by 100% with no mention of flight speed at all. Exactly like the Celestial Steed/Winged Guardian/Heart of the Aspects, all of which can be used as ground mounts.

Could this mean we'll be able to use this in Battlegrounds and instances sometime in the future?

Several alchemists, who find themselves in the position of making these for money, have noted that the amount of time spent to acquire this recipe (alone!) demands a huge "tip." Some make this "tip" mandatory, which (as others have astutely pointed out) makes it a "fee" rather than a "tip." Nothing wrong with that, although you'll get less grumbles if you call it like it is.

The logic of "must charge big tip" goes something like this:

1. I spent 200 hours getting this recipe!
2. This clown wants me to use this recipe on his mats.
3. This clown shouldn't benefit from my hard work unless I get a fair compensation.

Thus far, the logic is sound. But now comes the fourth step:

4. This clown should pay me for the time I spent.

This does not necessarily follow. You can use the recipe as often as you like, without any significant cost, as long as you have an adequate supply of materials. Using the recipe once does not in any way impair your ability to use it again. Are you hoping to be compensated, by each buyer, for the 200 hours you spent? If so, good luck, because no one can offer you a fair price for that time.

A better way to think about it might be this: how many times will you use the recipe? Let's say you feel that you should get at least 200k for those 200 hours. If you figure to use it five times, then you can spread the cost of your 200 hours across five people, and charge them each 40k - which is more than the cost of the mats. Still unlikely. If you figure to use the recipe fifty times, you could charge them each 4k, which is at least plausible - someone who has the resources to gather up the mats can probably scare up 4k more for your service. Notice that lowering the price increases the likelihood that someone will pay. This is called the Demand Curve: the cheaper something is, the more people will buy it. Economics 101.

In the really real world, the Demand Curve is offset by the Supply Curve, which moves in the other direction - because the more money you can make doing this, the more likely you are to do it. In the really real world, the shape of the Supply Curve is informed by the cost of performing the service... but here we have a problem. The marginal cost of making one more Vial of the Sands, with provided materials, is precisely ZERO. Your 200 hours are spent, and that's that, whether you make one Vial or a hundred Vials.

You have to set your price at a point where people will actually pay it, or else you won't make any money. Maybe there's someone out there who will pay you 40k, but I doubt it. There's probably a few who would pay 4k. There's probably more than twice as many who would pay 2k. Obviously, there's a bottom to this curve because there are only so many people who can afford the materials at all; besides, if you give it away for free, you won't make any money no matter how many Vials you make. On the other hand, you'll never make any money, at all, unless you're the cheapest option available (at least at the moment you're online).

What you have to decide is how little you're willing to accept. The amount of time you spent does not matter. The value you attach to your time does not matter. The factors that matter are outside your control - your server's population and wealth statistics, the number of other alchemists that have the recipe, and how much they value their time investment.

You need to be level 80 and have artisan or higher riding to use this mount and anyway it's about 15k at the cheapest. I don't think you'll be getting this anytime soon unless you can level up to at least 80 and are saving up enough money. Anyway, there are drakes in at least SW and Org in all servers as I speak so it won't really be as impressive.

I have a friend with alchemy, but I don't think he will craft a Vial for me free, even though we're real close (If we know each other IRL we don't know it, though. I mean online.). When I get artisan riding and hit at least 80 I'll ask him if he has the recipe, and if he'll make one for me, and the absolute minimum price. If I have enough money, and I want to waste it on a Vial, I'll pay. If I don't, I'll go out and farm some gold.

I'm not telling his ingame name or server, that would invade his privacy somewhat. This is all I'm saying.

That's what I've seen--Probably the best deals.
So you see, Trade is cheaper on my server. (Alliance.) But if you want a steadily improving price (Sometimes :/, for bid, and if you are the alchemist) go AH. And if you have the mats, make several and get several bursts of around 27.75k gold, and watch the magic!

Note for the alchemist:
If you have the mats, and you want it, you get the benefit of the semi-free Vial! (Need to pay for some of the mats) Other people don't get this opportunity.

Note for everyone:
If you're starting a new toon, choose herbalism and alchemy for the profession and don't abandon them. Also get Archaeology for getting a free Canopic Jar which contains the recipe. You'll thank this advice later at 80-85 when the money starts rolling in.

This mount was originally NOT going to be on the list of account-wide mounts in Mists of Pandaria. However, a decision was quite recently made to change this:

I've noticed the demand for this mount has gone down(at least on nordrassil server), and subsequently, the price to sell. (seriously, right now, there are 3 VOTS in the AH, all under 35K) Considering the mats that goes into this, (potions/trugold/vendor mats) value should be at least 35K+, this is becoming an insult.

A shame really, considering the amount of effort most alchemists must put in to even be able to craft it, let alone craft /acquire the mats. At this point, I can make more money off daily transmutes.

I put together a "cheat sheet" of sorts to help keep track of where to go to gather all the mats for this recipe. Then I printed it out and keep it by my computer as a reference. Hope it helps:

Pyrium-Laced Crystalline Vial
Sold by Yasmin (Innkeeper) in Uldum.
5,000 Gold (4,500 Gold with guild perk discount.)

Sands of Time (8 ea.)
Sold by Yasmin (Innkeeper) in Uldum.
3,000 x 8 = 24,000 Gold (21,600 Gold, or 2,700 Gold each with guild perk discount.)

NOTE: I did some research and found out that as of Tuesday 05/31/2011 these two vendor mats DO NOT get the Goblin racial discount bonus. But you CAN still use the 10% guild perk discount if you have it, which will save you 2,900 gold.

Truegold Bars (12 ea.)
Each Truegold Bar requires: 3 Pyrium Bars, 10 Volatile Fire (Can be fished from pools of fire at Cannon's Inferno in Twilight Highlands), 10 Volatile Air, 10 Volatile Water.

This is a rule that should applied to anyone with a 2 person mount.
1. Get a friend to get on your mount.
2. Fly to Teldrassil.
3. Eject them so they spend 15 minutes parachuting down in to water/roots.
4. Follow them down.
5. Laugh.

Food for thought for anyone who might be considering farming this mount:

As of right now, it's a little less than a week before MoP, the level cap is 85, mounts are shared across your entire account, and there is currently no limit on the amount of daily quests you can complete in a day.

Since MoP is so close, I decided to put aside my normal regimen of grinding Justice Points and kill some time farming this mount. Luckily I have a level 85 alt with maxed Alchemy already, so all I needed to do was level up Archaeology and start farming. I spent several days on this, very unsuccessfully - I only got 2 Jars after getting completing a couple dozen Tol'vir artifacts, and naturally neither contained the recipe. So I decided to research a little bit, and discovered that even once you get the recipe, the mats can also cost 25-30k by themselves. That's 25-30k gold in addition to the the 1,200 hours most people are estimating as the average amount of time spent farming just to get the recipe. And that's assuming you're starting with a level 83 character with 525 alchemy and 450 Archeology!

So, here's a general rundown of all the things you'd need to do to get this mount, if you were a new account, starting from scratch:
1) Level a character to 83.
2) Level Alchemy to 525.
3) Level Archaeology to 450.
4) Farm the recipe itself.
5) Farm 25-30k for the mats.

It's really easy to see that there is an INSANE cost in getting this mount yourself, even if you're like me and can essentially start on Step 3/4.

Considering this, I checked the AH on my server, and found a Vial for sale for 35k. Needless to say, I scooped that baby up.

I can't say for sure that 35k is a typical cost on most servers, but I would figure it's probably not that far off. Some quick mental math tells you that if even if you're a little on the lucky side and the recipe and mats only takes you 1,000 hours to gather, if you were spend that same amount of time instead farming gold (via dailies, gathering, etc.), you would only need to make a measly 35g an hour to get equal results. On a whim, I went and did all the Firelands daily quests, and earned 329g in 50 minutes after vendoring trash and repairing. That works out to be 394.8g/hour, which, for the mathematically challenged, means that if you spent 1,000 hours doing those dailies, you'd wind up with 394,800 gold. That's enough money to buy the mount 11 times at 35k, with 9,800 left over. But since you only need to buy it once, it would only take you a measly 76 hours to reach your goal. I don't remember what the payouts are like for the other level 85 dailies, so your gold per hour might drop if you go to Deepholm or somewhere and do those dailies as well, but I should think it would take you absolutely no more than 200 hours at most at level 85 to earn 35k, a mere fifth of the time it would likely take you to farm the recipe and mats. I would also imagine there's going to be dailies at level 90 that probably offer the chance to earn more gold/hour as well, making the time investment in getting this mount via gold farming even less.

TL;DR, I don't want to necessarily deter anyone from trying to get this mount on their own, but doing dailies and buying the mount from the AH can drop your time spent acquiring this mount by a factor of at least 5. I think it's probably worth farming a couple Jars to see if you get lucky early on, but I'd say if you go more than 5 or 10 Jars and don't see it, you're probably better off just switching over to dailies.

I got this recipe about 6 months ago with my undead warlock on Borean Tundra server. But now I am trying to get it with my gnome warlock on a different server (I already have the mount for all of my toons but I'm wanting to make one for my son and his friends.) Here's my question: Since I've already found and learned the recipe with one of my toons (Horde) is that going to prevent me from finding it again with another toon (Alliance)?

the base price of the mats for make it is 31 680 gold for potion but if you farm some mats you can reduce the price of minimum 1k

Question on this item- does anyone know if this works like all the other mounts and is BOA? Or can you only use it on the one character you receive it on? Ex: If I get this on my druid, can I use it on my priest in my list of mounts?

Got this earlier today in the AH for 32,000G on Area 52 US. Usually goes for around 30,000G-47,000G i've seen. And i've watched the price for abt 2-3 months now just to see for sure.

As someone who hates lvl-ing new toons, I had to buy this mount. It took a while to get enough gold for it but it's worth it. I really needed a 2 person flying mount desperately.

Here is a list of the mats for the flasks and where to grab them.

Whiptail (128) – Uldum, along the sides of the river north and south of Ramkahen.
Volatile Life (128) – Gotten by farming other herbs
Cinderbloom (64) – Outer ring, Deepholm. (Some say that going to Hyjal works out better for them but it seemed fine over at Deepholm, the Cinderbloom is mixed in with Heartblossom however)
Albino Cavefish (8) – Needlerock Chasm, Deepholm (Fishing in pools)
Azsharas Veil (64) – Shimmering Expanse, Vash’jir

Just got my Recipe: Vial of the Sands right after looting 4x http://www.wowhead.com/item=64657. Don't know if a specific alchemy level is required but mine was maxed (600) at the time. Best of luck on getting Yours!

The demand for these has gone waaay down, at least on my server (Cenarion Circle). My Auctioneer add-on lists the value at 41,000 gold. I've had one listed on the Auction House for 30,998 Gold minimum bid and 34,998 gold buyout. I've listed it three times but so far, no takers. Considering the cost of the mats you have to buy (26,100 gold) and the time and effort it takes to create the other mats (Especially the Truegold Bars), I consider selling this mount for less than 30,000 gold an insult.

I ended up farming for the vial for 3 weeks, got 2 canopic jars and it was in the 2nd jar i had gotten. to be fair i farmed for about 6-8 hours at a time 7/days a week for 3 weeks at max level alchemy and max level archeology- for every 10 digsites i had gotten i had gotten 2-3 uldum digsites, and everytime i had farmed the uldum digsites i had gotten 4-5 gray items, 1 rare then a canopic jar- by the time i had gotten done and had finally gotten the jar (by sheer luck that it was in the 2nd jar i had gotten) i had nearly 1k worth of items that i had sold to the vendors alone- so yes it took forever just to farm it, and yes the items you need are expensive, but once you even see the receipe in your inventory you will feel a lightening and a sense of relief- it will feel worth the grind, does it feel worth it while grinding? no because you will feel like you will never be lucky enough to get it, or be able to afford it, but with time, and with luck, you will get there. trust me, i know :) im on staghelm- warlock named Dementya (my alchemist). good luck fellow players, and happy (or frustrating) hunting ^_^

Just to add to Vaystre's comment (very useful btw, thanks), the cheapest method i found (not very quick by any means) to make this (without having mining) was to craft Pyrium Bar to craft Truegold:

Volatile Fire (120): Mount Hyjal (fish lava pools and kill molten giants while waiting for pool respawn)
Volatile Air (120): Vortex Pinnacle (farm the whole place 5 times per hour).
Volatile Water (120): Twilight Highlands (kill enslaved waterspouts around the lake and fish from pools)
Pyrium Bar (36 without specilisation):
Elementium Bar(36): buy form AH
Volatile Earth (36): Molten Front (Obsidium Punisher (must have druids of the talon dailies opened at molten front) run circles around that island)

i bought mine for 39k. I actually got all the mats for it to be made for me by the same guy but got turned off when he said give them to me and i will make it. When i knew he had one he could have traded with me. I just bought that one and sold the truegold and herbs to make those pots. Pots were worthless on AH so i am glad i waited. Took me 3 days to farm the air , water, fire.

Anyhow the important part is you can carry a lvl 1. So being the business man i am i flew over to lvl 1 land and said for 200 gold i will fly you to a few FP's. No one bit. I took one guy for free to BB to be nice and he was great full.
Honestly at lvl 1 i would have jumped at the chance to have all local FP and not walk. I will keep trying.

+1 me if you like the taxi idea.

Be aware, it's VERY IMPORTANT: you must have 525 Alchemy and 450 in Archeology, AND be at least level 80 for the Uldum sites appear and find the Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments.

I say that because when I hit 525 in Alchemy and 450 in Archeology, I was still at lv 76 and tried to find the Tol'vir Fragments. I've dug a lot of times and nothing, the same old sites. It was then that a thought came to my mind "maybe it's because of my level". So I decided to look for another forums and they confirmed what I've suspected: you must be lv 80 too. So, when I reached lv 80, I tried to dig again and guess what: it appeared after the third try, like magic :p

After extensive wowhead browsing and testing in game, here's how i farm the volatiles needed for this;

(Warlock 554, mining, fishing(in case you're wondering) and one Voidlord named Daxirax);

1: Go to Zul'Gurub. Enter instance and take a left. Kill the Queen and loot the honeycomb. Go out, reset instance, repeat until voidlord gets bored(meaning as many times as you can before reset instance lock occurs).

2: Fly/ride/hitchgike to Twilight highlands and equip your fishing pole. Ignore Voidlords scorning gaze about the looming fishing activities.

3: Go to Cannon's inferno(southwest corner of map) and fish up the pools of fire if theer are any.

4: When pools are done, head out to where muddy water elementals roam(big river on map). Kill them for the refreshing water they carry. If there's others there, you can also fish the pools for water. Crazy eh? You can also get othere herbs from fishing such as Azshara's Veil.

5: Discuss the merits of soul link versus Dark BArgain with your voidlord.

6: Repeat steps 3-4 until your instance reset resets(hour i believe?) and start from 1. You can skip step 5 if you're a non-warlock type of person.

You can slo try and find pyrite ore while you're in TH, needed for the other bits.

This should get you what you need in a reasonable farmtime and have some leftover Twilight JAsmine(and other stuff) to make a bit of profit also.

Got mine for 40k in trade chat. Very good price from a nice guy. AH prices are about 46k, which is too much I think.

I'm questing with my girlfriend, so this is really usefull. Excellent choice, if you always have a friend with you.
