I've read that this will not work with chimera shot.

Now I'm not sure on if that is true or not, but couldn't blizzard make it so it could work with chimera shot?

Say you have 50% crit chance fully raid buffed and a serpent sting ticks 7 times in 21 seconds.

My serpent stings usually hit for 700-800 raid buffed. So total being 5250-ish. If you crit half the time for 2.0x the damage then you could just add in the extra damage. 5250/2 = 2625 + 5250 = 7875 total damage. Then it could calculate that into extra Chimera shot - Serpent damage.

Obviously 50% of your serpent stings won't always crit, but at least this would bump up the damage that Marksman hunters put out. For all I know this could already be the way it works out, I'd have to get 2 pc T9 to check.

From Patch 3.2.2:

"Hunter Tier-9 2-Piece Bonus: Critical damage from Serpent Sting will now work properly with the Mortal Shots and Expose Weakness talents. "

The Hunter's t9 2-piece set bonus causes Serpent Sting to crit for 100% additional damage, up from 50% damage after feedback and peditions from the hunters on the PTR. With Mortal Shots and Relentless Earthsiege diamond boosting crit damage, Serpent Sting will be able to critically strike for 133% damage. Target debuffs such as Curse of the Elements will further increase the critical strike damage in raid settings. This is a tremendous DPS boost to the hunter, as Serpent Sting is more or less a universally useful ability across all specs, that is incorporated into the majority of SV and MM shot rotations. When Serpent Sting critically strikes, it will also trigger Expose Weakness, which was a recent fix in patch 3.2.2.

This set bonus really shines on a gimmick fight like hodir when you get the storm cloud buff, seeing 10k+ serpent sting crits is awesome.

Crit chance seems to be based on spell crit, not ranged crit. My ranged crit is almost 50% unbuffed and it doesn't seem to crit anywhere near that often.
