The heal is applied AFTER you take damage. It is not a shield that will absorb damage. Prayer of Mending WILL NOT proc if you absorb damage with a PW:Sheild. It DOES proc from SW:Death damage. If there is no valid target with in 20 yards when it procs the buff is lost regardless of jumps left.
This skill is amazing for self healing even if you arent grouped. 390 mana (less with talents), instant cast heal for 800+. Between renew and Prayer of Mending you can withstand some good damage while still on the move.

The best situation to use this is when there are two people in a group tanking mobs, if you cast Prayer of Mending on one of them, it will bounce back and forth between them and heal for easily more than 5000 (with modest healing gear) healing for less than 400 mana. It is by far one of the most amazing additions to the priest class in the Burning Crusade.

Obviously, this heals for less than flash heal (about 300 less) but it is instant, and can heal up to 4800 hp in total, with 0 +healing. Be warned though, that it doesn't look like it can crit, and obviously, if it jumps to you and you have a decent tank, the rest of the spell is lost.
A trick is to simply be sure you are further than 20 yards away, which a good healer would be anyways, to be well away from mobs that might suddenly run to you.
It gets the same benefit from +healing as flash heal (about 42%) and the mana cost can go down a lot - to about 275 or so.
It doesn't proc underneath PW:S, only when you actually lose health. Also, if you are alone, it just disapears after the first heal, since it doesn't have any party members to jump to. If you have your shadowfiend out, however, it jumps to that, but you wont be seeing it on you again unless your fiend takes damage.
Last but not least, it does proc on EVERY damage source - so if you have some weak poison on you, ticking for 2 damage each 2 second, you will blow off 800+ healing for that 2 hp. Better use a renew then, eh? ;)

Prayer of Mending is nerfed in 2.0.10, given a 10 sec cooldown because of PVP-balance issues, unless the patch notes are changed before the patch goes live.

I did some testing... It seams it is "SMART" spell, it jumps prior to ppl that are taking damage (or high on aggro lists). Tried it in Gruul's lair, 2 warriors tanking 2 mobs, and it jumped from one to other for 3 or 4 casts (thats 20+ bounces) - and ONLY jumped between tank and offtank. Nice!

I'm amazed that no one has mentioned one of the greatest benefits of this spell here yet...
The healing done by the buff is "owned" by the person who receives the healing, not the priest who cast it. You can even see with damage meter addons that the healing will be counted under their name. This is fantastic for offloading healing threat.
For large group pulls, use this on the MT as often as the cooldown will let you, especially for first few times right after the pull while the tank is trying to get a threat lead on them. Not only will you minimize your own threat, but you will be helping the tank hold them as well.
Also, regarding crits (re: alaha's comment above) if you read the description of the "Inspiration" talent in the priest holy tree it seems that it should have the ability to crit, but everything I can find on the net seems to indicate that it does not. Is this not a bug?

It's not smart but it does have a short-ish bounce range (20 yards).
Whenever possible, have everyone but melee classes stand 20 yards away from the tank(s). Melee dps often takes small aoe damage effects so it helps to keep the PoM bouncing around.

Macros to use with Prayer of Mending:
When you click the macro with your Left Mouse button, it will cast on your focus target (I set mine to my main healing assignment). When you click the macro with your Right Mouse button, it will cast on yourself.

If you want to use a keyboard button to activate the macro with different targets, you have to use the second one.
Also, a little off-topic, but priests can really help a tank out with extra threat generation by popping this on him every 10 seconds (that's the cooldown). I try to have it up 10 seconds before a pull and hit it again right when it bounces for about 4k free threat for my tank (I have +2k healing, though, so results may vary). There is apparently zero threat generated when this is cast. I've never once pulled aggro mid-pull from mobs that haven't been tagged yet, so if you're late getting it on your tank, do it as soon as you remember.

A skilled arena team, be it 2v2, 3v3 or 5v5, can make this spell jumping constantly by having some degree of control over damage dealt to them. Other classes such as warriors and warlocks have abilities that damage themselves for slight amounts if the opposing team only targets one person (bloodlust and life tap). So PWD isn't the only way to keep it out of dead ends.

It's important to remember in PvP that the range of this spell is twice the range of its jump. Meaning that if you want it to jump around, it requires some thought as to how you intend to position yourself when you cast it. If you cast it on a target and it has no one to jump to, it is essentially lost after the heal on your target.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned this but I have been wondering, PoM doesnt seem to be able to stack twice on the same target from different priests so exactly how does it react to two PoM's bouncing around from different priests? Do they avoid the same target? or will they cancel? as an offhealer the last thing I want is my PoM to override a stronger one so I figured I'd ask here instead of taking a risk during a raid.

Apparently this will generate threat for the priest, not to the person which it bounces from. This means that priests won't be able to apply it pre-pull to the tank without risking getting aggro from a bounce. It will also mean that this doesn't increase a tank's threat if bounced off them.
It should be using the Priests spell power, not the targets. As for the threat, it should now generate threat for the Priest not the target. The same was done to Lifebloom, Earth Shield, etc.

A person in my raid says that PoM jumps to the people with the least Health, but it keeps jumping to me even when I have full health and other people don't...
Does it jump to people with least Health, like Circle of Healing heals people with the least health?

I'd like to mention that POM is an AMAZING ability for the Eagle phase of Zul'jin. Cast it on yourself and after you take damage, you get healed for more than he hits your for. Every time it jumps to someone else, they get a free cast that heals them instead of hurts them. I generally remind my group that if they see POM jump to them, they can get a free cast. You're also just about guaranteed to get 5 good ticks from the POM, which makes it just crazy efficient.

Considering the amount of threat that tanks now generate, there is no real need to worry about using this spell before an encounter since the first hit the tank makes will generate a considerable amount of threat compared to the threat generated by your heal. and that's not even taking avoidance into account.
Willypiggy - never used this on a 25 man encounter? all my PoM charges are used up if this spell is used at the right time. and considering t7 bonus allows one extra jump, this spell its even more useful and more mana efficient if used right.

amazing spell. just started playing my priest again and did ~ 45% of my healing in the nexus with it.. couldnt go oom like that :D

Perhaps the most powerful and class defining ability a priest has. Prayer of mending has always been one of the top 3 of healing abilities on my meters for amount healed.

cooldown is reduced to 7 seconds. Cast it every time it is off cooldown.

. You wouldn't believe how many times I have left this on a tank, sat down to have a drink and had this proc (Which quite annoyingly

A priest should normally cast and refresh this on the main tank to keep it bouncing around the melee. This is by far one of the cheapest healing abilities available as far as healing to mana ratio. Also a useful pseudo-instant heal (not very useful if the next hit kills the target) if you need a quick heal.
With the increased random party damage in Wrath this ability shines much more than it used to back in TBC when most 5-man dungeons were more or less tank and spank.
Prayer of Mending on Sapphiron is astounding, the regular light raid damage will make this bounce all the time, along with the
2-piece bonus
from the Tier 7 Set and the talented cooldown reduction to 7 seconds you will find healing quite easy (The set bonus amazing. Really amazing). A thing to note is don't use this on the main tank as they will usually be out of range of melee dps avoiding cleave and it will simply dissapear after one heal. Cast it on yourself, stand near some ranged dps and it will get the full effect every time.
tldr; Cast this all time, every time it is off cooldown. In Every situation.

My thought is if it doesn't heal on the first hit, especially if you have all ranged dps, then it is effectively a waste of mana since it has no where to jump and did not soak that first attack.

Damage is taken, then the heal is triggered and bounces away. That is why it is risky to use it as an instant heal for low health party members.
-I confirmed this in my combat log. Loaded up prayer of mending on myself with full health. whacked a tree under Dalaran. Hit me for 400, then subsequently healed me for 400.

I don't argue the fact that instances are easier, but what I was referring to is the fact that more than just the tank is taking damage, much more than that of BC instances. More often in BC I would find my PoM would heal the tank, jump to me or a dps, and sit there until I recast or it wears off.
Quite often in newer instances, no matter how much threat the tank has, party members will still be targetted by "random party damage" abilities. PoM bounces more than it used to.
Prayer of mending also bounces from any DoT damage. If you preload it on a tank in preparation for the next pull and he still have a tick or two of a small bleed on him, it will bounce away.
PoM will bounce from Shadow Word: Death damage. But not from warlock's life tap as it is not considered damage but life loss (consider removing a piece of armor that has stamina on it for example, you lose health but it is not damage).

Prayer of Mending is one of my top three favorite healing spells, up there with Prayer of Healing and Renew. I found that one of the most useful ways to keep the mend rattling through the group if it lands on you is to cast Shadow Word:Death on a target that won't die from the impact. You take damage, PoM heals for more than you took, and the mend keeps moving till hopefully it runs out. if it rattles back to you before that, well... either be anal-retentive and wait for SW:D cd to wear off, or recast knowing you at least got a little more mileage out of the current mend. Another way to ensure that at least 3 charges are used up is to set up a macro that places the first mend on yourself.

Place it in one of your auxiliary action bars next to SW:D, then click on it, target a monster, and kick start the life gain with a little death. :3
And yes, I like the idea of saying it rattles much better than saying it jumps or bounces.

I like the unique sound this spell has.
If some of the people in your raid/party are alt tabbed or something and they hear the sound of Prayer of Mending, it means that something is going to happen, the tank is going to pull or stuff like that.
It serves as a alarm sound saying "WAKE UP! We're gonna attack soon!"

I also use Prayer of Mending to locate a party member when I can't see them in the confusion of a raid. The spell animation is like an arrow pointing directly to your target. Great for things like running to the debuffed party member on the Acidmaw & Dreadscale fight.

Hey all, I recently got this on my priest, and whilst healing in Utgarde Keep I noticed when it "procced", it healed the tank, then sometimes didn't jump to anyone, even with people in range and not at full health, anyone know why this happens?
It had only used the first out of 5 heals so it wasn't that it was using them all up, and it wasn't healing all 5 instantly with damage taken one after the other really fast, so I have no idea why it is going off, any ideas?
Apart from that, it's an amazing spell, love it and have used it every cooldown(as long as it isn't up allready) :D

Probably a silly question, but does the heal break Shadowform? I.e if I cast Mending, switch to Shadowform (since obviously the spell is Holy and casting it will break it), and then get hit/Reflect SW:D onto myself, will the resulting heal pop me out of Shadowform?
Likewise, can I throw it on a random melee while DPSing, switch Shadowform, and then continue to DPS, will the healing proc (or the jump) break Shadowform?

Does anybody know what happens with this spell and two priests in a group? Imagine a horrible group consisting of a tank, an off tank and 2 priests. One priests casts POM on the main tank, the other casts it on the off tank.
They both take some damage. Will it be able to jump around between the two tanks, or will they conflict and fall off because it can only have one POM proc active at once, or what?
Does that question make sense?

this spell is overpowered. it causes no aggro, insta cast, no cooldown and cost less mana than flash heal. With my healing gear it gears for 1000+ hp. Totally overpowered I tell ya.

Servers are not yet up again (its still maintenance) but I just downloaded the Update, and there it was:

Blizzard, for once, reacted on our whining, and did "only" nerf half of what they initially planned.
In addition, Circle of Healing ManaCost have been reduced by 25%, which
perhaps
might make it more worthwhile to use at some points.

I think that the nerf to prayer on mending wasn't called for. Have you ever been healed to death? The priest class needs a huge buff and for once they actually get a nice spell. The moment that happens the community hates losing their free HK and pisses and moans about how they can no longer stun lock or two shot priests from 100-0.

I just wanted to point out to everyone that the damage you take from Shadow Word: Death will trigger PoM. In healing situations, I keep SW:D avaialbe on a hotkey so that I can target a tanked mob and hit SWD if the Prayer lands on me. In my healing gear (all +healing, no +damage) the PoM heals about twice as much as the damage I take from SWD, even though I'm shadow specced, so it's a useful way to get PoM moving back to a useful target (like the tank), as well as getting a quick heal on yourself and a little extra damage on the mob. This helps get more mileage out of PoM.
It's especially useful in a situation where you have only ranged dps that's a long way away. PoM the tank, tank gets healed, PoM jumps to you and you hit SWD, jumps back and heals the tank again, back to you, and heals the tank one more time. Not too shabby at all, since it's all instant cast spells.

PoM jumps to the one in ur group/raid within range with the lowest hp after it heals your first target,waiting for upto 30sec for the next hit. how efficent isnt that, ey? in 90% of the time PoM needs atleast half a minute to be fully used so a 10sec CD isnt noticable at all
Get "PoM tracker", try it, and youll never want to use PoM without.

i can see how this would work if you had the tank and off-tank right next to each other with no one else within 20 yards. if it works right, the 5 jumps would finish right around your cooldown. of course it would take a lot of positioning to make it work but hey, at least you have the option now.
saw a couple PvP videos before the cooldown was in place. this spell was

This spell can work great if you're party gets hit with DoTs.
With one slow DoT it just cycles through those affected, healing everyone to full (the tank typically gets 2-4 of the charges if they're doing their job) in about 10 secs.
If the groups getting lots of DoTs(afflictions locks in BGs), its done in secs.
Also Does anyone know how much bonus this gets from +Healing?

Getting to the best way of making sure u r 20 yards away, look at ur wand attack button. Wands have a range of 20-25 yards (cant remember). Keep moving away from the tank until the wand symbol has a red dot (meaning its out of range) but you can still cast your healing spells because they have a greater range.

The healing of the spell is great, but that's not the most important part. It's a little bit random who it's going to end up healing and it only heals people who are being hit, so you can't rely on it as a means to save people who are about to die. The #1 reason to use this spell often is to give aggro to tanks or at least take it away from healers. It may not be the greatest thing in the world when your top rogue suddenly gets more aggro from a POM that landed on him, but in the long run you're guaranteeing more threat to the tank, which is an amazing thing for a healer to be able to do. One of the best spell additions to any class in BC.

Pretty much a fire and forget spell, but don't underestimate it. It really shines with raid wide damage. There's also a couple of tricks I've learned.
Cast PoM on the tank 10s roughly before the pull. You can then cast it again immediately. Does a decent healing burst.
Then, if you're in a scenario where you can position yourself near the tank (make sure you know what mobs they're tanking though, if they have cleave or anything like that) SW:D something, it'll bounce to the tank and back to you again. Three PoMs on the tank in the span of a couple seconds really adds up. More of a heroic dungeon trick than a raid one though, and it assumes no melee.
