Good for raiding, bad for PvP/soloing. Take it at that.

this is gonna be very handy on fights with deadly aoe like prince, no more dieing from shadow nova when you're not paying attention :p
edit: is gonna be, sine its not available yet
unless you can get it through minor inscription research wich i don't think so since wowhead doesn't list it

Assuming straight conversions, max range with normal mind flay (24yds) at 50% movement speed = 48yds. (thats how ive always looked at it, whether its correct... IDK)
anyways, this glyph interested me because i dont have move closer than Mind blast range or sw:p range. so in bgs or instances you can just stand back and pewpew. I also found less use for the MF snare with the new 70% noninterrupt chance especially soloing where no single mob can really do damage.

I would like to note that you
CANNOT stack several glyphs of the same type to increase the effect.
Upon attempting to inscribe a duplicate Glyph at the Lexicon of Power you recieve the message:
"That Glyph is already inscribed in your spellbook."

I don't know how really this glyph is useful. I have no problems /w my MF range except one encounter - Malchezar.. In solo i don't need 36y range because i start my combo with VT - SW:P - DP - MB - and only here is MF. Mob is already in 26y from me.

The 50% snare on mind flay is overrated in pvp. Mostly because you need to channel it and it's short range. In a fight against casters, you'll really not need the snare. It is MUCH better to dot up and cast your brand new critting mind flays on a caster at his/her own distance instead of counting on mind blast and your dots while you try to get closer to flay (or not). Against melee though, they now have too many ways to close in the distance now once they start focusing on you. It's best to start at a distance. Don't forget that psychic scream also throws them away quite far at times, mind flaying them from that extra distance is excellent.
Also, don't forget hunters. They've got their insanely long range and you can't apply ANY snare on them except for mind flay and it's 24 range tops. Your dots and mind blast also probably would not be able to take them down before they take you down. What better way to facemelt them silly than by casting flay at their shooting distance? Granted their max range is 42 or something but they almost never stand at max range in pvp. They DO stand more than 24 yards away from you though.
Not to mention you can let another class apply a snare in pvp. What good's your mind flay snare at 24 range then? Not that good. It's all about the freedom to stand still (a shadow priest oxymoron) instead of moving to mind flay. Mind flay is HUGE now with its ability to crit, and shadowform now increases damage based on your spell crit. You'll bet we're gonna have quite a bit of crit. You can't afford to NOT cast mind flay now, and if you're limited by the short range, poops to you.
If the change to 10% snare is done (hopefully keeping the 10 yards), it would make this glyph even better. For raiding and pvping. Can't say much for soloing since the mobs get to you anyway, but either way works.
Use another glyph if you want, but I'm definitely using this.

I did a quick test, both using the same mob and same gear:
- 24 yrd Mind Flay (50% Slow) = 6 ticks of Mind Flay
- 34 yrd Mind Flay = 6 ticks of Mind Flay
In 24 yards with the 50% slow, I can get two Mind Flays in before they reach me.
So six ticks + longer range, or twelve ticks + shorter range. I'm gana stick with the twelve ticks, even though I don't always manage two full channels before the mob closes on me.
As far as raiding goes, the slow has minimal application (I saw it used on the skeletons @ Kel'Thuzad, and.... well thats all *I've* seen. Illidan adds?), so once my priest is capped (20 more levels...) I'll likely be picking this up so I can keep at range (elemental shaman before Flameshock got good range, anyone?). That or the SW:D glyph... but thats a whole 'nother question.

Change made, HOORAY! Now it is:
Increases the range of your Mind Flay spell by 10 yards, but it only reduces the target's movement speed by 10%.
Excellent change, and very useful at the same time

Solid Glyph. Some knuckleheads don't know what they're talking about (saying it's bad for pvp). When you're casting mind flay you're standing still, you can't kite with mind flay. 34 yard range will help more than a additional +10% snare ever could.
Now you can mind flay from the roof in the WSG base and hunters won't be able to kite you as well as before.

I did not find this glyph very helpful on my level 30 shadow priest and quickly dropped it for Glyph of Power Word: Shield. With this glyph melee mobs will get to you before you can finish channeling a full duration Mind Flay, unglyphed you can do one Mind Flay and at least a tick of a second one. I will admit this glyph does help fighting against caster mobs if you do not wish to move in towards them.
Why do I recommend Glyph of Power Word: Shield as your second glyph? With it I never need to cast Vampiric Embrace while fighting up to two mobs at once saving me a GCD to instead cast a damage spell.

Well, it isnt that bad anyways, you bacame better against casters and hunters, but you have less effectiviness against mellee.
In PVE, soloing I have only one problem with the weak snare effect, if you use p. scream the mobs most of the time can run away and call more to join the battle, you cant stop them with MF, sometime they run out from the 36y range. And I think most of the time in pvp you get more melee on you, can use better the unglyphed MF. All in all I think it isnt worth one place of glyph.

Looks like Blizz likes this glyph enough to change it so it's beneficial even to leveling priests:
Glyph of Mind Flay: This glyph no longer reduces the magnitude of the movement reduction on the Mind Flay victim.

Looks like patch 3.3 will see +10% MF damage on this, not sure yet if it will still have the extra range though, hope so!
EDIT - My bad, I see MF will have its standard range increased to 30yrds like the other spells, so win win!

Patch 3.3:
The periodic damage ticks of your Shadow Word: Pain spell restore 1% of your base mana.
So, we have 6 ticks and 6% base mana in 18 sec. Looks nice...

The value of this glyph is easy to calculate.
At level 80, Priest base mana is 3863 (
WoWWiki
). Since this glyph restores 1% of that (38.63 mana) every 3 seconds, it is equivalent to a static
64.38 MP5
, assuming you keep SW:P rolling throughout the fight.
By comparison,
Glyph of Dispersion
can be worth up to
225 MP5
, assuming you use Dispersion every cooldown and have 25K mana. Plus, Dispersion scales with gear and buffs, whereas SW:P doesn't -- without mentioning the Shield Wall effect.
A somewhat underwhelming glyph. Would have been much better if they'd kept haste scaling for SW:P, but that was a wee bit overpowered. :/
(Edit: That said, SW:P does have some advantages. It doesn't require you to interrupt DPS for 6 seconds, for one.)

With the changes in 3.3, I think this is now a decent choice for a leveling priest (assuming they are leveling-up shadow spec). More mana equals less downtime to my way of thinking. The fact that you can get this starting at level 15 makes it a bonus.

It's actually the opposite -- the 3.3 change has made this glyph completely useless for leveling.
Before, added range on Mind Flay was actually decent for a Shadow Priest, since it put its range on par with all your other Shadow spells. This new mana regen mechanic is pointless, for two reasons:
1) Leveling Shadow Priests do not have mana issues (Spirit Tap, Vampiric Touch, Dispersion, Shadow Fiend).
2) Mobs die so fast while leveling there's no need to even cast SW:P.

This would depend on how you are leveling I would guess. I run alot of instances when I am leveling, and this glyph works very well for lower level SPriests that do not have VT yet. When my tank pulls, I cast SWP on every mob in that pull. That usually means that 2-3+ mobs have my SWP on them, and that means 2-3+% of mana per tick. That makes this glyph work very well for how I am currently leveling.
1) Leveling Shadow Priests do not have mana issues (Spirit Tap, Vampiric Touch, Dispersion, Shadow Fiend).
Refering to Korasoff's comment about using this for leveling, this Glyph is great for lower level Priests that are leveling Shadow in that you can get this at level 15, whereas you don't have access to VT until level 50, Dispersion till level 60, and Shadowfiend till level 66.
Edit: Was just thinking about this Glyph from the raiding standpoint. By the numbers on a 3 minute Patchwerk fight (For the Achievement)-
SWP will always be up, so you will get 60 ticks out of a 3 minute fight at 3/(3*60) so it is good for 60% of base mana (3863 not including racials) which would be 38.63 mana per tick x 60 = 2,317.8 Mana
*longer for Ulduar and ICC hard mode bosses
Replenishment will give you 36 ticks at 5/(3*60) so it is good for 36% of Maximum mana (figured here at 25K mana) which would be 250 mana per tick x 36 = 9,000 Mana
*Replenishment is party/raid wide though
Keep in mind that this is a single target math figure. Replenishment is a Apply:Aura so you can only have one on you. Glyph of SWP is an energize effect with no CD on it, so it can be applied to more then 1 target.

That also means you had to cast Shadow Word: Pain 2-3 times, upping the mana cost over a single cast or no cast significantly. Considering the speed at which mobs die -- even in instances - your SW:P probably doesn't tick for its full 18 seconds anyway, making it an inefficient choice.

Except you get 3/3 Spirit Tap at level 12, and that's good enough to hold you if you gear yourself properly. With heirlooms and Int/Spirit/Spellpower gear,
you do not need to drink as a leveling Shadow Priest, ever
. If you did, then you were doing it wrong and probably using your DoTs too much. All you need to kill most mobs is:
Mind Blast - Mind Flay - Mind Flay - Mind Blast
If the mob isn't dead yet, wand for the rest. You will never go OOM.
To be fair, there aren't ANY good Shadow Priest leveling glyphs anymore. None. Zip. Nada.

It's important to note that this glyph restores 1% of your
base
mana.
Shadow Word: Pain (SW: P) costs 22% of your base mana (20.68% with
Shadow Focus
). So this glyph saves you 1/22*100=4.55% (4.84% with
Shadow Focus
) of your SW: P mana cost per tick.
From a levelling perspective:
From my experience while solo levelling I usually have no more than 2-3 ticks of SW: P before the mob dies. This amounts to a 9.7%-14.5% savings in mana cost for SW:P (with
Shadow Focus
) . At level 70 (2620 base mana) 2-3 ticks of SW: P amount to about 52-79 mana saved per fight.
From a raiding perspective:
Under ideal circumstances this glyph amounts to about
64 mp5
, using
Pain and Suffering
to keep up SW: P indefinitely.
1% base mana at level 80 = 38.63 mana.
1 tick from SW: P = 3 seconds.
38.63/3*5=64.4mp5

running simulationcraft on my lvl 80 shadowpriest having this glyph it ended up giving me a total 3359 mana over 5 min, ~56 mp5 in combat.
the glyph does not in any way scale with gear, it scales with your level only.

Since not everyone is an 80, here's my 2c
Also good for young priests that are shadow-spec'd healing instances... it's mostly just shield-renew, and wand the dying so spirit tap procs
This glyph gives increases both effectiveness of the group as a whole, without hampering you very much
