These were hitting me for around 600-800 with 52% armor mitigation. They are, however - fairly easily kiteable.

Easily soloable by an Elemental Shaman. Just Frostshock kite the giants on the outer edge of Giants' Run. You don't have to kite very far, they are easy to kill. The outer edge has little to no mobs, so no real clearing is required except to get to the mobs. I had to kill about two mobs just to get to the giants. Pulling the giants won't aggro the Iron Rune Mobs, so if he's standing next to them, it's ok to pull him. Also, be sure you're killing the right mobs, the Runed Stoned Giants should be in red to you, not yellow.

Pretty easy to solo as a 70 BM hunter with 2 T5. They hit harder than the trees in Sketties but die faster.

soloable by a death knight in greens, any spec. its a very lengthy process, but on the beta when you have to solo a lot, it works.

use chains of ice to pull, then use icy touch, and repeat the process, kiting the giant in a safe direction. and whenever you have enough runic power up use death coil. as lv71 and blood it normally takes me about 2 minutes to kill one.

These guys move at roughly 20% faster then normal.

You can also use the druid's Entangling Roots on them. As such i am assuming you can use any and all slowing/immoblizing ability on them. However, as i recall, they are immune to the paladin's Repentance; As such i am assuming they are immune to all incapacitating effects, but stunning effects such as Hammer of justice works.

If you can move 25% faster then normal, or you can slow them down by about 20% or faster, so they move just as fast as you do while your running, you can kit them to death. Or, if your alliance, you can hug the north side of the lake by fort wildervar and kit them to the guards, and the guards will aggro onto them and kill them. You just need to get within 20 yards of the guards, and the guards will aggro and kill the thing your kitting for you. Make sure you do at least one point of damage, or else you won't get credit for the kill, although you MIGHT still be able to deactivate the runes. I hit a giant with moonfire rank one then spam kitted the giant to the guards using faere fire, and when the guards killed it, i still could loot it.

Easily soloed as an arcane mage. Just keep them slowed and instant cast them if you wanna be extra cautions, altough you can stop to cast spells on them while they're running after you.

Don't forget to use the pick on them after you've killed them!

There's also a quest later in Grizzly Hills - Free at Last when the quest item fails to do what it's supposed to for that quest it turns the giants into non-elites and after you kill them you can use the pick for this quest on them.

They use nasty dot aprox. every 5 seconds which lasts 7 seconds, does 500 damage per second and stacks! They start casting it after 10-15 seconds so nuking them fast might work. As a protection warrior I was able to spell reflect it and thus I had always maximum one stack on me. It's still challenging with mediocre gear but definitely doable.

Be careful, these enemies could surprise you.

Of the 4, one of them killed me just as I killed it, and another I survived only by spamming food after defeating it. The last one, for whatever reason, I killed with 80% of my health left.

lvl 72 Frost DK. Possible to kite but it will take alot longer, and the area is quite populated by reds.

This quest is super easy if you use the temporary pet from The Rune of Command quest, which is from the same area.

For some reason, I could not complete this quest. Every time I killed a runed stone giant I would attempt to use the quest item provided, but I would get an error message saying "Invalid Target."

Has anybody else had this problem? What am I doing wrong?

This quest is bugged if you are a miner and have a regular pick in inventory. Either remove your pick from inventory or group with someone who is not a miner.

The giants you want to use the "Runeseeking Pick" on are the "Runed Stone Giants". They are up north and are hostile, unlike the "Stone Giants" wich are neutral and are being transformed by the "Iron Dwarves". Both giants look the same.

As a miner, do this:

When you kill the Runed Stone Giant, loot it by right-clicking him.
Once he is mineable, use the ITEM in your bag (quest provided) on the corpse.
After you get the credit, mine him normally by right-clicking the corpse.

You must complete the quest; Down to the Wire before you can get this quest.. Down to the Wire starts at Gil Grisert on the opposite side of the fire from Researcher Aderan.

Instead of bothering with the DoT on the Runed Stone Giants, I found it much easier to just camp Megalith at 68,10 and use the pick on his body. As a 70 DK, he was much easier to solo. His respawn seems anywhere from a minute to 5 minutes (dont quote me for accuracy) the point is, I didn't wait long.

Got all 4 of my picks on him in 15 minutes or so. Happy hunting.

If you are on The Rune of Command then you can use the stone giants as a helper for this quest so you can solo it easier.

If he gets the dot on your stone giant he will eat it up. The dot just hurts. So, try to keep the aggro on yourself and just kite the runed stone giant while your stone giant stuns the heck out of him and gives him the same dot he gives you. Do this quest with The Rune of Command pet and it is easily soloed.

Hang onto this quest and wait until you get the quest Free at Last. When you free the giants from their slavery they become Non-Elite and there is a chance they will attack you. Kill them and then analyze them. Worked on all 4 that attacked me. No Failures.

Some basic information about this quest:

- Get to The Rune of Command quest. It will give you a pet which gonna help alot.
- Mobs you have to kill are Runed Stone Giant and not Stone Giant, which are yellow.
- You need to kill them AFTER they have stepped on the giant runes on the ground and get the Bind Stone Giant buff (it look likes the anti-magic shield effect, last 30 secs but you can kill them after it wears off).
- It is also this "binding" that give them their Rune Fist ability which can put on you the nasty Dark Rune debuff which stack up to 5, doing 3000 damage per 2 seconds.
- If you kill them before they get this "binding", you wont be able to examine them and will get the Invalid target error message.
- Best place to kill them to be sure they got the "binding" is around 72,16.

The Dark Rune is very deadly and going into melee with these mobs is very unhealty. Here is a guide for every class of how to solo them.

- Death Knight: Kite them with Chains of Ice > Icy Touch > Blood Boil > Blood Boil > Death Coil. Repeat.
- Druid: Root them and nuke them.
- Hunter: Kite them.
- Mage: Kite them and/or spell steal the Dark Fist buff and melee them for heavy damage :)
- Paladin: You can remove the DoT on yourself.
- Priest: You can remove the DoT on yourself and the buff on the giant.
- Rogue: Stun lock them. Cloak of Shadow if you get the DoT on you. Evasion to prevent to get hit.
- Shaman: Frost Shock kite them and/or purge the buff on the giant.
- Warlock: Felhunter out and eat the buff on the giant. You cant drain their hp and they are immune to fear.
- Warrior: Equip a shield and Shield Slam them to remove the buff. You can also spell reflect the DoT.

I was able to kite a couple round in circes as a warlock with no speed mods. They dont always move faster than normal, but I dont know what makes them go slower or faster. I got a couple of kills this way, but then they kept "resetting" mid fight.

Just luck with the positioning. Given 3/4 of an hour Im sure you could rack up 4 kills this way.

Did this solo as a 75 prot pally. This fight you need to come prepared for because these guy are tough. As everyone has mentioned before he does a DoT called Dark Rune, this has to come off fast. If that was the only thing he did that wouldn't be much of the problem. The other thing these guys do is a knockdown so if you don't have good latency or are a little slow you can find yourself interrupted.

I found that trying to actually control the fight rather than slug them worked better. Hammer of Justice will buy a good bit of time to cleanse and heal. Avenger's Shield is good for getting distance from these guys so you can get a quick heal off or cleanse. Mana pots are good to have as with all the cleansing, healing and getting out of melee range (the DoT seems to have a short range) made my mana return trash. (was using Seal of Wisdom the entire fight). If you have to pop a bubble but hopefully you have mana once your in the bubble. I did use Lay on Hands twice but my kills were not all in a row so you might only get it once.

While I was able to do it at this level I would have preferred a second person. Even a dpser would have made this fight trivial.

This quest isn't really that hard. You do not need to kill them as I found out, as of December 24, 2008, all I did was run up, use the pick and collect my xp.

This is a hard quest, but extremely rewarding when you do it correctly.
I read the comments. How hard could this be right?

Bottom line - do with "Rune of Command" quest.
This starts with "The Book of Runes"

The area had numerous mobs.
a) Runed Stone Giants - Elite - large trees (the things you need to kill) - these wander and walk slowly
b) Stone Giants - large trees which are stationary - you control these with "Rune of Command"

Steps:
1. Find a wandering "Runed Stone Giant"
2. Wait until it's close to a "Stone Giant"
3. Summon "Stone Giant" using your "Rune of Command" (5 min) cooldown
4. Drag summoned Giant towards Runed
5. DPS and run, DPS and run, heal, pot

Hints with this...
a) The summons Giant loves to smack things you have no control, but is weak in dps. So if he decided to go after a normal mob rather than the Runed one, you have to join in.
b) You can fly, mount whatever to drag the Giant towards Runed.
c) You will have to do most of dps. The summoned Giant has almost no dps.
d) The Runed is quite fragile. Any amount of dps will do damage. But the reverse is also true.
e) The summoned Giant will stun the Runed - this is your chance to get most of your dps in if you're melee

I was feral. Just got in high stam bear gear but melee'd as cat. Fast enough not to be caught so probably lost 20% health each time.

There a lots of Runed to north and less mobs so best to try up there.

If you're having trouble soloing the giants, you can mine the runes from Megalith, a much easier kill. Just remember that he's needed for a quest, https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=11359 so don't camp the spawn if you see others waiting. Respawn on Megalith is about 2 mins.

As an affliction Lock this did'nt prove to be too much of a problem, cast CoA and corruption, then just healed my void, if i did get aggro i used soul shatter and the giant was back on the void, due to 5 min cd on Soul Shatter it took a little while but worked out well, small tip, when doing the Rune of command quest, complete it return, get the Megalith quest and while u still have the captive giant find megalith and attack him the captive giant will help.

Note one thing with this quest: shapeshifters have some problems mining the corpses while in alternate form. Boomkin form for example. You may get a constant "Invalid target" error. Shift OUT of your alternate form and apply the pick to the corpse and you'll get credit. Don't do like I did and run around killing more thinking that the corpses themselves were bugged.

Others have suggested that you use the summoned creature to help you on this quest, but if you have a class that can kite or immobilize the giant, you can solo it easily because they are not immune to CC.

I soloed as a balance druid at 73. There was no DR on the roots, so i was able to get to range, nuke+dot, then root, run to max range again, and repeat till it dropped.

I should mention I allowed him to get close enough to melee me, so he was able to put a few stacks of the dot-debuff on me. I died before I could get a big heal off because the dot hurts quite a bit, if he stacks it up more than 2-3 times. So don't let him get more than 1-2 stacks of that debuff on you and just nuke+kite, or nuke+immobilize, run back out to max range, then repeat till he drops.

This is possible to solo as a 71 prot. pally (mostly quest greens and 2 blues), but some things to know.

1. The Quest, "Rune of Command" does make it easier, so don't turn it in right away.
2. The giants do shadow damage (a lot of it-which I was surprised by), so you might want your shadow protection aura on.
3. They stun quite frequently so be ready for that.
4. I used a healing pot as well as healing myself quite frequently and ran out of mana at the end of the fight.
5. Megalith is actually easier than this mob since he has a knockback (thx...now i've got a couple of seconds to heal) and doesn't do shadow damage...straight melee from what i could tell.

This took a lot of trial and error to get the four, actually killed 5 because 1 time I mined it b4 using the rune pick...doh! But I kept trying, died 3 different times, but couldnt' find a group to do it.

Of all the elites in Howling Fjord (outside of dungeons and the storm giants) this was the single hardest mob for me to solo (Glacion and those undead elites in Gjalerbron were cake by comparison (no surprise-I'm a pally and undead hold a special place in my heart))... Hammer of Justice worked, but Avenger's Shield seemed to not slow them down at all.

Good luck. Hope this helps somebody. I've done this quest on 6 toons now and the prot. specced pally and assassination specced rogue are the only toons who've succeeded at soloing it at the appropriate level though. Rogue just cheap shotted, kidney shotted and dodge his way through.

I couldn't solo this as a 72 fury warrior. They hit too hard, even with the giant pet, it dies too fast and cant hold aggro.

Solo'd yesterday as a 73 Afflic Lock wearing Northrend blues and green quest rewards.
Summoned void as tank then health funneled it until it has a high aggro lead then started popping DoT's.

When my void couldn't hold aggro anymore i used Shadow Ward and Sac'd my void for protection for the giant's DoTs while mine ticked on it until it died.

*I don't have CoE btw, would be easier w/ CoE i guess*

I soloed the giants as a level 74 enhancement shaman. Just use spirit wolves and your earth or fire elemental totem, and use maelstrom weapon for instant heals. And don't attack more than one at a time (trust me, it's a bad idea....)

Easily soloed as Unholy DK, just build up runic power on the normal mobs, then send your gargoyle and ghoul in while throwing chains of ice / icy touch to the giants to keep aggro and keep them away from you, and ghoul frenzy to keep your ghoul healthy if giant manages to hit him with rune fists. The giants always had only 2-4k health left when the gargoyle did run out. Nothing you can't take care of with couple of scourge strikes.

Very easy as a combat rogue. I would only lose 5000 hp at a max for each fight.

1) Open up with Cheap Shot.
2) Adrenaline Rush and/or Evasion
3) Sinister Strike until 5 combo points.
4) Kidney Shot.
5) Killing Spree.

That was the bases of what I would do.

These mobs have apparently had their speed nerfed. I have found that they do not run faster than normal. As Alliance Shadow Priest, it was simple to dot and kite it to the guards in Fort Wildervar.

Your recommended path along the lake is the best one. If run along the foothills a little further North, it will eventually reset the mob.

Soloed as a blood DK at 70, these guys are tough. Pop a ghoul, Mark of Blood, Death Strike early because the knockback they do early is a killer. You lose health quick to these guys. Next cooldown to use is Vampiric Blood and Rune Tap. Sacrifice your ghoul before they die to get 40% health, and Icebound Fortitude and a potion if you need it. These guys are way more powerful than you would think, I died twice before I got the fight down.

Is this quest bugged? I was killing these giants as a Retadin, lvl 72, some killed me though/ But many times when I tried to use to pick on the corpse it said invalid target?

Managed to solo this quest as a lvl71 Frost Spec mage, found out that you are actually unable to spell steal his buff, since everytime you try it just comes out nothing to steal, So mage's i wouldn't even bother trying it although it states in above comments that you can.
But if your frost spec'd just hope for lucky Frostbite proc's and if not then just Frost Nova in place and use Deep Freeze and nuke them down. Only 1 out of the 4 mobs actually got close and hit me so you shouldn't have any issues.

Also i was in basic gear from Northrend and some items from Utgarde Keep & Nexus so you don't need Tier Items or Heirlooms to be able to kill these guys :)

I kept getting killed even as a 73 Rogue. So I waited and found that I could Analyse (mine) them while doing the Rallying the Troops quest (from Kurun in Grizzly Hills). In that quest I helped good Grizzly Hill Giants kill the bad Runed Giants as a 73 Rogue so I mines the kills then. It was much easier.

Do the non elite quests first, you will get a Rune of Command to kill Binder Murdis. while you have the Rune, take over a giant and use him to help you kill the ones for the quest.

edit: forgot to mention I did this as a feral druid, Mobs have 26.9k health, and hit for 1-2k, with a debuff that ticks for a similar amount.

Soloed this as a 71 ret paladin. As suggested, I did this along with the quest to kill Binder Murdis, and I used my Runed Giant Guardian to help. Those guys are perfect for this task as they periodically stun the mob and keep it from catching up with you as you kite it.

I engaged the mob to the north, free of stray pats, allowed my pet to gain aggro (good tip is to use Hammer to stun the mob and then start running while your pet attacks). Just keep Judgement of Light on the mob, cleanse your pet of the DoT (it hurts), heal it and keep a safe distance. Kite if you get aggro.

You may have to return and get another Giant Guardian after each kill, as they don't last long.

Even though it says 2-person quest, I recommend 3 or more. I have done this quest several times with 2 person groups and we almost always lose a person or pet since we never had a healer of any kind. As with anything, I am sure it depends on group makeup (whether or not you have a healer) and equipment. Simple healing will make this quest much easier.

Also, the path of the Runed Giants always takes them up towards Megalith (the end of the quest chain). The Runed Stone Giant will always walk north towards the base of the mountain and despawn shortly before arriving at Megalith's spawn point. I found this to be the best place to get the 4 giants since there are very few adds at the base of the mountain.

Great strategy for soloing this quest. Wish I'd read it earlier- eventually figured it out on my own. wanted to add that I was able to solo on my 73 rogue- needed some buff food and pots and had a couple of deaths from adds, but still doable even with <10k health with the help of a rune giant guardian

There's a far easier way to get this quest done solo, in conjunction with quest Free at Last.

While doing Free at Last these elite tree giants turn non-elite. They are easily killed solo, by anyone.
They are then "rune deactivated" before looting/mining, using the special Pick for March of the Giants.
Two quests done at once.

It's so easy that it seems unintentional by the quest designers. Or maybe just a pleasant "easter egg"
for those like me who postponed "March of the Giants" until later in the zone.
