Background

As Loken died, he mentioned a "herald" bringing an end to Azeroth. Since Watcher Loken was tasked with protecting the planet and guarding the prison of Yogg-Saron, his death alerted the Titans that Azeroth's defenses had failed.

In response, the Titans sent Algalon the Observer to analyze the corruption within Azeroth, and reply with status "Alpha" or "Omega." If status "Omega" is reported, the Titans will "re-originate" the planet, cleansing it of corruption— but also killing everything currently living on it.

Algalon is a hard mode-only boss in Ulduar, found in the Celestial Planetarium. ~~Players have a one-hour window to defeat him per lockout period.~~ Time limit removed in patch 4.0.

Unlocking the Celestial Planetarium

As of patch 4.2, you do not need the key to access Algalon. The original quest line was:

Complete I Choose You, Steelbreaker or I Choose You, Runemaster Molgeim, enabling one Archivum Data Disc to drop (it is not party loot; similar to Key to the Focusing Iris).
Accept the quest from the disc and bring it to the Archivum Console, located beyond the Assembly of Iron.
After listening to the Archivum Console speak, accept the quest The Celestial Planetarium from Prospector Loren. Locate the Celestial Planetarium and return to Prospector Loren.
This enables four quests to obtain the watchers' sigils, which may be performed in any order:
- Freya's Sigil - Complete Knock, Knock, Knock on Wood.
- Hodir's Sigil - Complete I Could Say That This Cache Was Rare.
- Mimiron's Sigil - Complete Firefighter.
- Thorim's Sigil - Complete Lose Your Illusion.
- Complete all four quests to enable the quest Algalon from Prospector Loren.
- Simply speak to the Archivum Console to complete the quest, rewarding Celestial Planetarium Key.

Loot

Gift of the Observer will spawn upon Algalon's defeat. Most notably, it contains one Reply-Code Alpha, which begins the quest All Is Well That Ends Well.

Ok after Algalon is defeated it appears that he backs off and says (correct me if I'm wrong, this is only an inference) :

A kill movie of Algalon on 10 man is available here, courtesy of Underground Kosmonavts.

It appears that there are four main abilities. There's raid damage from the titan polyhedrons that appear to be untargetable. There are Collapsing Stars that must be killed so they turn into Black Holes. There's Cosmic Smash, which targets someone in the raid and launches a meteor at their position, which you must avoid due to its massive AOE damage. And there is Big Bang, upon the casting of which it seems that everyone must get in a Black Hole and go through the portal. There are adds called Dark Matter on the other side, so people need to be at least reasonably good on health.

Looks like a fun fight. Can't wait :)

EDIT: Okay, after watching the healer POV video from UK I noticed a few things I'd missed before.

Firstly: The polyhedrons are targetable. They're called Living Constellations. They were not DPS'd at any point in the video. However, when they collide with a Black Hole, they destroy both themselves and the Black Hole, so it is likely that one deliberately kites them into Black Holes to reduce the raid damage.

Secondly: Algalon Phase Punches on a 15 second cooldown. This is a massive attack that will phase out the tank after 45 seconds (4 punches). The tank comes back soon after being phased out, but Algalon is free until then, so an offtank is crucial.

Thirdly: At 20%, one Enraged Dark Matter add will spawn out of every Black Hole currently up. This will happen every thirty seconds from that point forward.

Fourthly: Collapsing Stars AOE upon being destroyed and turning into Black Holes. This damage hits the entire raid, which is why they must be killed - they do damage to themselves (hence the name "Collapsing") and without focused dps they will all explode at once and wipe the raid.

Fifthly: The fight ends not at zero percent, but at around 250k HP (on 10 man) - about two and a half percent.

If anyone saw anything I missed, please correct me.

I decided to compose a strategy for 10-man Algalon based solely off videos. If anyone feel that things need adding, feel free to reply to this.

Algalon's Abilities:

Quantum Strike - Deals 15,675 to 17,325 Physical damage to the current tank. Algalon uses this all the time with roughly 3 second intervals so healers need to keep the tank topped up at all times.

Phase Punch - Deals 8,788 to 10,212 Arcane damage to the current tank. When the tank gets hit by this, he will receive a debuff that will cause him to 'phase out' and lasts 45 seconds. Once the tank gets 5 stacks of this debuff, he phases and Algalon will completely ignore him for the duration of the phase shift (which is roughly 10 seconds long). This seems to be cast once every 15 seconds and can not be avoided by any means.

Cosmic Smash - Algalon summons a red column (similar to the Shadow Fissures in the Kel'Thuzad fight) on a random player. After roughly 4 seconds, a meteor crashes down on the spot, dealing 41,438 to 43,562 Fire damage to anyone still standing in the red column. This also causes some splash damage which seems to be based off player distance from the fissure once the meteor hits.

Big Bang - Every 90 seconds, Algalon will begin casting this 8-second spell. Once cast, everyone takes 76,313 to 88,687 Physical damage. The method to avoid this will be described later.

Ascend to the Heavens - Deals an insane amount of damage to the entire raid. Algalon uses this after 8 minutes in combat as a form of 'Berserk', guaranteeing a wipe.

During the fight, there are also several kinds of adds that are summoned:

Collapsing Star - Algalon summons four of these 15 seconds after initial aggro and summons more throughout the fight. These are bright balls of light that don't do anything but wander around, but lose 1% of their maximum health every second. When they die, they explode dealing 16,088 to 16,912 Shadow damage to the entire raid and leaving a Black Hole behind.

Living Constellation - About every 50 seconds, Algalon summons three Living Constellations. These cast an Arcane Barrage-like spell that deals roughly 3-4,500 Arcane damage to a random player every few seconds. They have normal threat tables and can also be damaged, but they can be killed instantly by being kited into a Black Hole. They are also stunnable.

Dark Matter - These are located inside Black Holes. They only have a basic melee attack but hit quite hard (2,500 on a Hunter). They are merely a nuisance and should be avoided. These also spawn from Black Holes once Algalon hits 20%.

Anyway, onto the guide:

Algalon only has two phases, but a lot happens during these phases that the raid needs to keep alert for throughout the fight.

Phase 1
Algalon will transform the arena into space and immediately begin attacking whoever has highest threat. Algalon hits very hard and fast and will cast Quantum Strike very often on the tank so healers need to make sure he remains at full health at all times. All DPS merely attack the boss the best they can. Algalon can be positioned anywhere as he has no frontal cleave or cone attacks.

After 15 seconds, Algalon will use Phase Punch on the current tank every minute and summon four Collapsing Stars. Once the tank gets 5 stacks of the Phase Punch debuff, Algalon will switch to the second-highest on his threat table, so your off-tank should be ready to taunt and your healers should be ready to change targets as the off-tank will be taking a lot of damage very quickly. Algalon will be Phase Punching the tanks throughout the fight and need to keep switching.

For the stars, 1-2 DPS should be assigned to killing the stars one at a time. If they are left alone, they will all explode at the same time and wipe the raid. DPS need to make sure healers are ready before a Star is killed as the entire raid will take roughly 16k damage, and if the tank is too low on health when a Star explodes, he'll die and will very likely cause a wipe. After each star is killed, a Black Hole is left behind (explained later). Stars will keep spawning throughout the fight until Phase 3 and should always be killed.

Every 25 seconds, Algalon will begin casting Cosmic Smash on a random player. A red fissure will appear that everyone has to quickly move away from or they will die instantly. After the Cosmic Smash hits the spot, it will cause some splash Fire damage which seems to be based off the player distance with the impact point.

50 seconds after the initial pull, Algalon will summon three Living Constellations that will damage random players in the raid and have normal threat tables. When a Living Constellation enters a Black Hole, it dies instantly and the Black Hole disappears. A single DPS or probably a healer should get aggro on all three of these and run behind any Black Holes they find. The idea is to kite the Constellations into the Black Hole to kill them instantly. Death Knights are an ideal choice for this as they can stand behind Black Holes and use Death Grip so the Constellations land in the hole.

Every 90 seconds from the initial pull, Algalon will begin casting a 8-second cast spell called Big Bang that is almost guaranteed to kill anyone it hits. To dodge this, everyone needs to enter a Black Hole created by a killed Collapsing Star. Once inside the Black Hole, players will take roughly 1,500 Shadow damage per second and there will be elite adds called Dark Matter scattered everywhere. Players need to avoid getting hit by these the best they can until Algalon has finished casting Big Bang. Afterwards, everyone is teleported out of the Black Hole and the fight progresses as before. Not sure of this, but each Black Hole seems to have their own separate 'realm' so players need to make sure they enter the same one if possible. Entering a Black Hole also resets all threat of the player, so it is advised the currently Phase Punched tank to stay outside and eat the Big Bang. This way, the off-tank can taunt to gain all the threat he had and DPS don't have to worry about getting aggro.

This phase continues until Algalon reaches 20%.

Phase 2
Once Algalon reaches 20%, Collapsing Stars and Living Constellations will despawn and will no longer spawn anymore. Any currently open Black Holes will also dissapear. Algalon will continue to cast Quantum Strike, Phase Punch and Cosmic Smash however.

Algalon will then summon four Black Holes in a square pattern. Every 30 seconds, four Unleashed Dark Matters will spawn, one from each Black Hole. The off-tank needs to pick these up and tank them to the side for the rest of the fight and DPS need to burn down Algalon before these adds pile up and become too much to handle.

When this phase begins, swap tanks as the current tank will very likely have the Phase Punch debuff and the off-tank will have a hard time surviving if he has to tank the adds and Algalon together. If you swap once the Black Holes spawn, you'll be given about 45 seconds to defeat Algalon before a forced tank-swap which should be long enough. Players also need to keep alert about Cosmic Smashes as Algalon will still be using this.

Once Algalon reaches 1-2%, everything despawns and you win!

I believe the entire Algalon event to be what was foreshadowed in the Auberdine quest "The Absent Minded Prospector". Upon conclusion of the quest, Aman, who has the same model as Loken, is summoned and says the following:

Aman says: Who hath summoned forth Aman?
Aman says: Ah, I see you toil with relics of the past.
Aman says: Be warned that even your creators are fallible.
Aman says: Digging too deep into your past might bring an abrupt end to your future.
Aman dissipates before your eyes.

You can see by his comment on that quest that Deluxe05 saw this coming way back in July 2007.

The reason why the MT is left behind to eat the Big Bang is because if he/she goes inside a black hole his/her agro will reset, and that will cause Algalon to randomly target someone in the raid after the Phase Effect.

About Cosmic Smash, it appears to deal damage depending on the distance between the Player and the Red Fissure, as seen on the Resto shammy video, it normally hits him for 3000-4000 fire damage, but at 3:30 he didn't noticed the fissure and moved a bit late, and got hit for 12000 damage, so try to stay as far away from the fissure as you can.

Also they seem to had Fire Resist Aura all the time, so it looks like Fire Resistance helps reduce the damage caused by the Smash, So I'd recommend to try using buffs that increase fire resistance(GoTW,Aura,Totem)so healers have easier time doing their job.

Im not 100% sure, but from what I've heard, Ascend to heavens seems to be used if the raid is fighting him and the 1-hour timer goes off, wiping the raid and then despawning.

See if Blizzard really wanted to take WOTLK to the next level, they should make this "omega reply code" kill the raid, and, as Algalon promises, actually kill everyone on Azeroth via massive world-consuming apocalyptic firestorm. I mean he really isn't exhaustively hard enough as it is, why not make every encounter with him a server-jeopardizing experience? There could even be a server-wide buff if he's defeated.
Just saying, he says he's going to exterminate all life of Azeroth, and it's kind of an anticlimactic letdown that all he does is feed on the tears of a 10-25man group. Besides, it could only happen after he was actually encountered, which is no small feat at all, and even then it would only be able to happen once a week per group that encounters him.
It'd give an edge to the battle that no other end-all raid boss could lay claim to.

This might be a silly idea...but what if you had a hunter or warlock pet outside attacking him when he does the Big Bang - would he still wipe the raid or simply think he's getting to kill somebody as there would be a 'player' on him (somewhat) and just smash it into the oblivion of a resummon and target the first healer available before a tank taunts as the raid comes out from the black hole? :-)

Vanish bugging does not work on a Big Bang. Tried doing that and reestablishing myself on Algalon's aggro table quick enough. He didn't go for it and casted Ascend to the Heavens anyways.

his main damage does not come from quantum strike. In our attempts, recounts shows that nearly 90% of overall raid damage is on the tank and among 80% of the tank damage is mellee. Our recount shows damage taken of over 1.1-.1.2m damage by the 1st big bang.

Assuming you had a 25-man raid comp similar to this one with two tanks, six healers, and seventeen DPS, the average raid DPS would have to be just over 101,000 DPS, which translates to roughly 5945 DPS per DPSer, in order to beat the six minute enrage timer.

The math for 25-man Algalon:

34,862,500 hit points (Total Algalon 25 health)

345 seconds (Six minute enrage timer minus 15 seconds for three Big Bangs)

This assumes the 345 seconds alloted for the six minute timer minus 15 seconds for three Big Bangs as well. The math is calculated the same way as above with relevant values inserted.

Has anyone looked at the globe that Algalon stands by? Its a globe that displays islands where there shouldn't be and contents torn in half. It is a very different version of Azeroth from that which we all know; lastly, the Maelstrom is way bigger than maps we've seen before. Originally I thought that this was just a mistake by developers but.. After all the rumors of Cataclysm, could it be a future model of Azeroth in the next expansion?

Since he has 8million hp and 6 min bezerk timer... every1 in your raid needs at least twice the dps they would need to kill patchwerk, so somehting like 5k+.

The Titans didn't create Azeroth, they came upon it when the Old Gods were running rampant. They basically made it better, yes, but did not create it.

1 thing he does is Ascend to the Heavens, idk what it looks like butit happens during his berserk, by the sound of it, he well... ascends to the heavens, so if it seems to have been about six minutes since you aggroed and he is strting to float into the air, you are dead, ascend to the heavens does 600,000-700,000 damage approximatley

Why do people over-analyse everything?

Alpha = First letter in the Greek alphabet
Omega = Last letter of the Greek alphabet

All of the knowledge of humanity is recorded in writting, writting is composed of letters of the alphabet, so everything we know is contained in the "Alpha-Omega"

So, when someone claims to be the Alpha and the Omega, he is simply saying he is more than what you can comprehend.

PS1 : the greek alphabet predates the bible
PS2 : the word "alphabet" is also from greek from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet "Alpha" and "Beta"

It's a shame that this guy - quite possibly the most epic boss ever fought in the game since Ragnaros - is obsolete. I ran with a group of people from another guild on my realm (US-Zul'jin) in my 10-man all through Ulduar (I only run 10-mans pretty much) and we conquered hard modes fast with the exception of Firefighter. We spent incredible amounts of time on Firefighter - something in the range of 100-150 wipes - and sadly never beat him before the late June nerfs.

When we got to this guy after finally beating Firefighter it was like euphoria. The art, actually the overall aesthetics of the fight, combined with his perfect voice-acting before, throughout, and after just completely blow any fight out of the water. I didn't even care that I, a Warrior tank, was getting torn to shreds by his pure damage output, it was just amazing to be there. I proudly wore my Starcaller title for several months, only finally replacing it in October when my guild got Herald of the Titans.

This guy is far and away the most epic experience you'll ever have in World of Warcraft, and I highly recommend everyone to go back and see him at least once before they quit the game - I promise you that you won't regret it, or else you can personally log on Zul'jin and find me and curse me out. Best boss ever, and I'm really sad that he's not worth much anymore with two tiers of gear beyond him released, outside of the fun and epicness factor.

Tips for anyone looking to fight him:

Have your tanks stock up on Indestructible Potions; his damage output is still no joke even rocking 10k+ more health than I had the first time we hit him.
Bring a Holy Paladin and a Discipline Priest; the bomb heals from the Paladin combined with the Shields from the Priest are the best cushion you can have on this fight. It's light years ahead of any other combination you can bring for tank healing.
Use your most trusted ranged DPSer for stars, regardless of class. Don't default to a hunter because other guilds do that; we use an Elemental Shaman, and it's more of a player art than a class art to kill them properly.
Have fun! Few people still have seen this boss, so you're still awesome for having seen him. Enjoy the fight and encourage your fellow raiders to see it too.

I only skimmed through the 86 Comments here and didn't catch one bringing this up, but...does this battle remind anyone of Zeromous, the final encounter in Final Fantasy IV?

(That would be Final Fantasy II, circa 1991, for you Super NES players out there.)

All-powerful being from beyond our world. Stars, planets. Dark Matter (an item which Edge could Steal from Zemus in his first form). And a big, flashy spell called Big Bang.

It's been speculated that Algalon will be the last boss in VoA. They are inserting an Algalon-looking mount, so it's likely that he'll be either returning or that he's getting a mount-drop in Ulduar. On Wow-Europe.com, the VoA page (Check additional source) Algalon the Observer is listed as the final boss. It could be a glitch, seeing as the raid instance Ulduar has no information at all.

I know the movie reference might seem lame but, the description sounds very similar to the "architect" at the end of third matrix movie.

Loken's death triggered a failsafe mechanism warning the titans that Azeroth had lost its foremost guardian. Algalon the Observer has been sent to examine the situation and, if necessary, transmit a reply-code that will restructure the entire world, wiping out all of its current inhabitants.

Both are failsafe mechanisms and will wipe out the world.

If you dislike the Matrix trilogy please don't downrate me :D
