I won this in our 10-man run today, and I did some quick preliminary testing.

103 melee swings
10 "shadow bolt" procs

2081 melee swings
110 "shadow bolt" procs

It seems the proc rate is right around the ~~10%~~ 5% range. Also, it does not appear to have an internal cooldown (I had it proc 3 melee swings in a row one time).

It isn't affected by spell power, but it can critically strike. The critical strikes do 1.5 times normal proc damage, and the frequency is based on your chance to critically strike with spells.

This is the level 80, 10-man version of the now-unattainable Deathbringer, which was a drop from Level 60 Onyxia. The 25-man ilvl245 version is Raging Deathbringer.

This is a vanity item since it gives up passive stats for an RNG relying stat which isn't that spectacularly imba in its own accord to begin with.

this is the spell that it procs. note that the tooltip of the procced spell states that it has a 2.2 seconds casting time. it also has 30 yards range.

edit: yet another post downrated just because. the tooltip link is correct, the tooltip does states that the spell has 2.2s cast time and that it has 30 yards range.

I don't think it uses your crit chance to be honest. After 50 shadow bolt attacks I had barely about 6% proc rate, while my spell crit is ~13% (melee ~20)

the procc is definatly affected by dmg increasing effects like black ice, recount show it hitting (normal, not crit) for 2200 dmg

edit: that was when doing regular rotations
i tried with just hitting with this wep equiped in MH and no wep in OH, just doing regular melee hits and the dmg is down to 1600, so its definatly also affected by effects like tundra stalker and maybe even by AP

with 1 disease (thus tundra stalker being active): 1900 dmg

A few interesting points regarding this weapon (for a Frost Death Knight) :

- The proc deals around 2.5% of your dps over a long boss fight, in ilvl 232 gear.
- It is affected by Blood Presence, Black Ice and Curse of the Elements, giving it an extra 43% damage.
- The proc is unaffected by off-hand damage malus, making it an exceptionally good off-hand weapon.
- Its an overall great weapon for Death Knights, as the Agility and Stamina of typical one-hand weapons are replaced by a powerful proc.
- No internal cooldown means that your haste affects the dps from this proc.
- An exceptional 2.7 speed improves damage from Plague, Frost and Blood Strike, as well as Obliterate.
- The proc can crit, though i cannot yet tell what the crit chance relies on.
- It would seem to proc on abilities and not only melee hits.

I'm still investigating wether Tundra Stalker affects it.

Dummy Testing:

3074 melee hits
200 procs

(200/3074) * 100 = 6.506% proc rate
At 1834 melee hits i had a 6.56% proc rate

Proc without modifier should hit for an average of 1500.

3084 AP - 27% melee crit - 17% spell crit:
Average Hit: 1899
Average Crit: 2961
Crit chance: 26.1%

578 AP - 7,95% melee crit - 3% spell crit:
Average Hit: 1894
Average Crit: 2981
Crit chance: 7%

1500 * 1.15 * 1.1 = 1897.5

Facts (?):

Proc chance is 6.5%
Crit chance is your melee crit
Does NOT scale with AP
Runic Focus does not work

Took this through Ulduar last night; one more data point. Frost DW DK DPS.
8% proc rate if it's based on white hits (6.5% if you include white misses); if it also procs on yellow strikes, the proc rate was 1/30. Not sure which is the case. There's a strange screenshot in the comments for the Raging Deathbringer that shows it proccing off of spells. If that's the case, the proc rate is even lower; it also raises the question of whether the dual strikes from Threat of Thassarian give double the chance to proc. And none of it makes sense with people who have found 6.5% proc rates only autoattacking.

Average hit was for 2278, average crit was for 3979 (Storm Power while fighting Hodir inflated these numbers, certainly). Once crit Hodir for OVER 9000! (9452, actually).

Overall, accounted for 1.4% of my damage. The stats on a comparable level weapon would probably add more than that, but it would not have the nice 2.7s swing speed.

this is gonna seem an odd question but maybe some of you math geeks can answer it for him if he doesnt know, since its been confirmed that it's proc does get 10% from black ice, (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/spell=49664) as well as 15% from blood presence, (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/spell=48266) and ive neither seen it denied nor confirmed whether it gets 15% from tundra stalker (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/spell=50130), but supposing it does get all those, do the percentages stack, I.E. does this get 40% bonus to the proc damage, or does it calulate the proc damage, plus 10%, then that total plus 15% from blood presence, then that total plus 15% from tundra stalker? does the further 13% from curse of elements work in a similar way? or does it simply get a base bonus of 53% overall proc damage? (these numbers actually are different, through theyre very close to one another.)

if my math is wrong i apologize, but if someone could help me with an answer, I'd appreciate it.

Does this weapon proc from ranged physical attacks?

Our guild had a massive argument in vent tonight when a hunter wanted this weapon. I would like to settle this once and for all, but the DK that was awarded the item can not equip a gun or bow for testing. Thank you in advance.

No, any "Chance on hit:" effect only happens when the weapon itself hits the target.

Thank you both for your clarification. It appears then that the loot master made the correct decision in not awarding this axe to a hunter and sending it to a death knight instead.

From what I can tell, the lack of stats on this axe make it a poor choice for Enchancement Shaman. Going from a Battlestar from HTOC to this item resulted in a litteral net0 DPS gain according to enhsim, and using rawr would actually recomend me to switch back to the old 213 hammer.

On dummy testing I saw only the most minor improvement, meaning a berserking enchanted battle star equalled the DPS of an unenchanted Deathbringer ... so once I enchanted the weapon it did "real world test" better than what either sim reported, but just barely and is clearly inferior to a Lions Maw form TOC10 should one become avialable.

Basically the DK synergy seems much more positive than shammy to me, and OK item if defaulted, but hardly worth persuing.
