As of the current Wrath Beta build (9095), this is two-mannable with an 80 Protection Warrior and 80 Holy Paladin.

The Admiral has a shade over 200k HP. He uses standard warrior mob abilities - 1000-1500 melee on a tank with 20k armor along with a two-hit Whirlwind for about the same damage per hit.

Once he puts up his protective shell, simply use the Nullifier that Arete provides at the start of the quest and continue to beat him down.

coords are 9, 49 for hidden hollow, there's some elite mobs with like 20k life in there, not too much to worry about, just 3 manned with fury warrior (with a shield on), enh shaman (in resto gear) and bm hunter (pwning his face). Doesn't hit that hard at all.

I just solo'd this on my warlock and here is what I saw...

The admiral himself is a straight tank and spank... doesn't really do anything special. He hits my void (16k armor) for about 1500ish a swing and does a wirlwind every so often and hits for about the same damage. (didn't hit my void as hard because of avoidance but I'm imagining it would be about the same).

At about 50% hp, he will put up his shield and you will need to use the Lord-Commander's Nullifier to get rid of that shield. He becomes immune to everything while the shield is up, so you need to use the nullifier quick to continue dpsing him.

I would say within a minute of taking off that shield (it might have been a certain % of life that triggers this but I wasn't watching close enough)... he transforms into Dreadload Mal'Ganis and the fight changes slightly.

Once he transforms he has a few other abilities. He hit roughly for about 1600-2000 per swing and has typical dreadlord ability. He casts Carrion Swarm which did about 300 damage / 2 seconds, Mind Blast every 10 seconds or so for approx 2k shadow damage (he turned and hit me with just about every mind blast then resumed attacking the voidwalker) and he does a Sleep on about a 10 second cooldown as well and only lasts for about 3 seconds (would sleep me and continue attacking my void).

Something to note as well, when he transforms, his maximum health jumps to 384k but you continue fighting him from the hp he was at (roughly 40% or so when he transforms). I didn't notice how much hp he had remaining when he transformed but I did notice his max health spiked so my guess would be that his remaining life scaled with that as well.

He can be feared in his first phase but I found he evade bugs often and resets if he gets feared down the ramp.

Took about 15 minutes or so to kill him. Remember that all the physical damage about was done to a voidwalker with 16.2k armor... so if your a warrior... scale the damage by whatever armor you have.

Soloable as a holy paladin. I say this not to gloat, but to advise other holy paladins how to complete this quest even if they are unable to find a group.

The trash is very easy 1 on 1, and if you don't mind a bit of a risk you can just run straight for the admiral, stopping before you get to him, then AoEing the mobs down - in numbers they can hit fairly hard, so I'd recommend Conc Aura and FoL spam whenever you drop below 70%.

Once you reach the Admiral you can fight him where he stands. I used the same method I use with all 'tough' mobs - SoW and JoW, and using all my damaging abilities whenever their cooldowns became available (including consecrate). Use ret aura as he doesn't have any lethal burst damage, so you don't need any mitigation aura. Use a holy light whenever your HP drops below 50%.

Repeat this until he gets to 50%, then he will cast his barrier - which you break with the quest object. At about 45% he transforms into Mal'ganis.

However, the strategy remains the same - only this time you throw Exorcism and Holy Wrath into the mix. His dreadlord damage, whilst higher than his humanoid damage, is nothing dangerous and ret aura can remain up.

Once he gets to about 0.5% the battle ends, and you'll have completed another quest.

Soloed as a death knight,tanlent 45/0/26,and just 3 items above lvl 187.
But the pet can't stay alive,so deep blood or unholy could be better.
It's not easy,so if you want to try,read my tips:
He has aoe dmgs so if u have a ghoul,stay him far from westwind,just for death pact.
Use death strike all the time,but it's not enough.
Vampiric Blood or Icebound Fortitude will keep you alive,so use them one by one,and another 20 sec in the min you need mark of blood and rune tap.
If you are running out of CDs at low HP,use dead army,ghouls will tank him good,then bandage.
Take him to 100k he will turn to demon form,and you win 90%,because the demon form is easier than human form.
Took about 6 mins to finish the quest.

I was not able to accept this quest from the summoned Lord-Commander Arete in Onslaught Harbor because he de-spawned just as I was about to accept the quest but I turned in Second Chances to him and now he does not offer the quest to me in his normal spot of Death's Rise? I finished Second Chances and now I can't pick this quest up anywhere and I do not have the Portal Item to summon him near the Arch Bishop's body because he took it when I turned in Second Chances. Am I SOL?

Admiral Westwind was considered dead off the coast of Northrend,so reads his plaque in the lowbie instance The Scarlet Armory. Obvious events have appeared to make Westwind seem alive,however Nathrezim,such as Dreadlord Mal'ganis have the gruesome ability to overshadow or posses corpses and bind it to their will. Such an example would be the false leader of The Scarlet Crusade,Grand Crusader Dathrohan who is the corpse puppet of Balnazzar.

This is great lore as it appears the whole Scarlet coalition is infiltrated by Dreadlords and is falling apart from the inside out.

I was almost able to solo this as a ret paladin. Would have but he got in a lucky 3 hit combo at once. To do this I had to use seal of wisdom with judgement wisdom combo. Had to out last him like a holy paladin would by healing myself whenever i was down 8k hp and pop a holy light on myself. I didn't spam my dps abilities except for my judgments, divine storm helps for its healing. Pop divine plea when ever you get the chance and save your loh and bubble for human phase since thats when he is gonna hit the hardest. Once he converts into Mal'ganis, switch aura to shadow resist to help absorb some of the damage and you just continue fighting like ya did against his human form. Should be cake! Good luck.

fight seems to be bugged. if you keep him CC'ed (feared, stunned) when hes about to turn into mal'ganis, he wont turn at all, thus, making the fight a lot easier :)

soloed as a demo / destro lock, jus keep cod, immolation and corr up and then jus spam health funnel rank 1 to give ur pet the buff of the -30% less dmg taken (im assuming u got it improved if ur demo)
careful with fears because he might go evade if he gets not too far from where you engage him, so try to fear as less as possible. as i mentioned above, after u down his shield u must fear him so that he doesnt turn into mal ganis

Did this as a Frost Death Knight and Shadow Priest. If your lost inside the cave make your way down the center of the room, Do not go left at the bottom of the ramp. Take the pull in the center and continue into the back room to find Admiral Westwind waiting. He starts out not really doing anything then uses his shield. Break it and he will turn into Mal'Ganis. Defeat him and you will see him flee once more.

Easy soloable by BM hunter.
Tip is to shot Freezing Arrow while u can regenerate all mana and heal pet.
Between FA keep Mend Pet up. If pet gets too much crits use Intimidation.
Thats all.
Keep all CD at end while Admiral hits hard.

Right before he transforms, you can stun him and he will not transform. This will allow you to finish him off in his snareable/stunable/fearable state. This makes it a much easier fight for frost mages.

Out of curiosity I just wandered down here, without the quest. I'm a protection paladin. Had fun with the shadow elites...they drop about 1g each. Headed down to the big guy and soloed him. No shield went up, but the script follows just like you were on the quest. At zero health he teleports out.

Oh I used stun a few times...he never transformed to Mal'Ganis but spoke his voice and the above script is the same with Grand Admiral Westwind:

Grand Admiral Westwind yells: Kirel narak! I am Mal'Ganis. I AM ETERNAL!

... etc

So yeah...there's some bug.

As lvl 80 Dk Blood specced on frost aura this is not really hard.
i must say i have 8 epics (mostly titansteel and 1 valerous)

cleared everything first and then get ready to fight.
Use your army of death, raise a ghoul and get him spanked.

Wasn't really hard but do keep an eye on your health.
just use rune tap when needed and keep him disceased in order to use your death strike for extra healing.

got him down in less than 5 minutes and got more than 75 % hp at the end.

The quest mob itself is easily soloable by good geared prot warrior.

I found this out when my shadow priest companion DCd at 95% and only got back around ~20%. By this point I had only lost 40% of my health and would've propably done better if I wasn't still trying to get used to my new keybinds.

You will still want to bring a group simply because the elites on the way to the quest mob are much harder to solo than the quest mob itself.

For you holy paladins like me that think it requires some gear to solo this,it doesn't,can be easily soloed with full blue quest gear(around 14k mana and 1250 spell power)Just keep up judgement of whisdom and flash of light as well as shadow ress aura and you should be fine,will take some time

Trying this as a prot pally. I'll edit with results.

Buffs: Seal of Light, Greater blessing of Sanctuary, Righteous Fury and Devotion Aura.
Pull with Divine Plea up and just keep holy shield on, tank him up where he spawns, otherwise you have a chance of getting respawns during the fight ( like I did).
For the whirlwinds you will usually dodge the first one, then you can move back or stay in and have a chance to get hit.
I didn't stun him when he was transforming, but that let me get the exorcism crits on him, he isn't much harder in demon form.
If you have the divine plea talent, you should be at pretty much full mana the entire fight.
Keep Sacred Shield up and judge with Light, you shouldn't need to heal at all, nor bubble, pot or LoH.

Mal'Ganis I mean...
Sadly though, you lose the opportunity to kill Mal'Ganis, although I suppose as a Lore fan I think he really should be involved in a Raid at some point. Maybe he will be like Maiev and help you kill Arthas, with the difference that you then have to kill him... now that would be cool.

soloed as a warlock using the felguard/ember specc. He does hit hard i give him credit, but cast 3 dots, use health funnel then drain life when needed, no problem.

sad part is this specc is considered the glass cannon of locks. if i would have been felguard/aff would have been that much easier

I just soloed this bad boy as a shadow priest. The only tips I can give are theese:

Equip PVP gloves - 3 sec reduced CD on fear.

Try to foresee his WW, and move before he begins whirling.

Try to fear him as he transforms ( Will bug him, so he stays in human form. )

Managed to solo this quite easily as a Elemental Shaman (Quite good gear tho.)
I started off with Bloodlust+trinkets and nuked him, healed when needed. (Make sure you have Water Shield on at ALL times).
Then he gets the green shell, just use the Nullifier and continue nuking.
Once he turns into Mal'Ganis, he starts to hurt. Like... Hurt.
I started to heal more than I could DPS, with only 17k HP total, and all I could do was use Flame Shock and Lava Burst when off cooldown, while using the rest of the time to refresh Water Shield and heal myself. This was problematic because he heals himself for a % of his melee damage, from here it was just about wearing him down and endure.

Like the rest of the chain, easily soloed by an 80 Enhancement Shaman. I used Earth Elemental for Phase 2 just to be certain, but I probably didn't need it. As always, use wolves to keep you topped up, and Shamanistic Rage to cut down on the incoming damage.

If you happen to drop the quest item on accident, the stun trick will also prevent him from using the bubble.

Stun him just above 50% (i.e. just above 114k hp) and do a bunch of damage, he'll give the "You thought I would just let you kill me?" message, but he won't use the bubble.

Saved me a bunch of trouble since I dropped the item thinking it was something else.

edit: This will also prevent the transformation, keeping him in human (read: easy) form the whole time.

Just soloed him as a good geared 80 prot warrior. Came here because I thought he was bugged because he did not transform or bubble. Between revenge and concussion blow I stun a lot, so I must have coincedently had him stunned at 50%. Ez mode with bloodthirst spec, finished at 100% health.

Another easily solo'd by 80 affl lock.

This is a standard VW tank. I used only Haunt, Imm, CoA (no crits), siphon life for my tank, Soul Shatter at the last possible minute. Never got aggro once, took like 3 minutes. When his shield pops have that quest item at the ready! And continue. He sleeps randomly when he goes into the last phase, but it was np timing my SL. Really easy.

Had a 4 man group come in right as I started him, I'm sure they were waiting for me to die so they could get to business. Dropped my Undercity Banner after my victory and moonwalked out. Satisfying.

Pretty new blood DK (4 days 80, 3400 gear score) - first time was a failure due to my lack of noticing that you can dispel his immunity bubble, I jumped off and reset him. My AotD was on c/d after that so I just mowed him down using typical blood self-heal; I was ready to sac my ghoul but didn't have to.

Of course, I died while writing this because he respawned, I jumped off into a full pack of respawns....

Did this with a healer who'd been helping me out with the previous phase.

I must have CC'd him around his turning into Malygos time, because he stayed in human form the whole time. Then while we were discussing the bug, he respawned on top of us and we got to fight him again. Except this time the healer backed way up and aggroed the pack of adds that pats along the corridor to the Admiral soon before he should have bubbled. I concentrated on getting them down because Westwind, by doing only physical damage, makes himself a cakewalk; and when I focused my attention on Westwind again, he never even used his bubble, much less turned into a dreadlord. My healer didn't have the quest item and I certainly didn't use it. Perhaps he got caught in a lucky Shockwave and not only didn't transform, he just didn't bubble at all.

Soloed as a Feral druid in 3/5 Relentless 1/5 furious and 1/5 deadly.

I started off in catform by opening on him with pounce, then mangle, then savage roar, rake, managed to get 1 shred, off then one more mangle then a 5pt rip before I went into bear form. (I have 8,546 AP in cat form)

When I went into bear form I just tanked him down and hardly took any damage, Savage Defense procs and Imp Leader of the Pack Heals were enough to keep my health above 90% at all times. He's easier than the priest boss for a feral druid.

As far as I can tell, the soloing hierarchy goes like this:
Ret Pally < Prot Pally < Blood DK
I just soloed it as a ret pally (and the poster above did it as holy =0) so i'ts safe to assume that any pally or DK reading this should be able to do this without a group. Some advice for retradins though: make HEAVY use of Sacred Shield. Whether you are used to it or not, it will save your life. Pop cooldowns as necessary in sticky situations (since you have levelled the pally to 80 you should know when), but remember in this patch LoH procs Forbearance. LoH if you are low on mana and health, DS if you are only low on health.

Soloed as a lvl 78 unholy DK, I was in tank gear and just used glyphed pestilence and death strike for +15% hp heal (3 diseases), I have just over 21k hp so I guess any lvl 80 tanks that can self heal could do it too.

For some reason, he didn't use protective bubble or metamorphosis, maybe it was my ghoul who stunned him at the right moments but all in all with no magic dps on me it was pretty easy.

Soloed as a retribution paladin with
4759 Gs,
22k Hp
1494 armor (with berserk enchant on my weapon activating more like 13 k armor)

I used Seal of light, blessing of might and retribution aura. Healed myself when Art of War activated (obviosly with flash of light ^^) and ocasionally when my health dropped i use Holy light. The thing is i was kind of running out of mana even though JoW(judgement of wisdom) and had the replenishment allmost all the time (probably because of my rotation and the constant healing)

He is cc-able untill he turns into Mal`ganis...after killing him I suggest leaving in a hurry because he respawns kind of fast ( in a minute or so after i defeted him he respawned...had to do a Bubble + Hs combination to escape the basterd...)

Just did this fight. Be careful not to pull him too far away from his spawn point. He will give up and return to his spawn point, gaining full health.

Did this with a Hunter who kept pulling him back. Took several tries before I realized what was happening.

The trick is not to pull him anywhere close to the ramp down.

Soloed as a Shadow Priest with 5.5k GS. This is a hard fight.

Just give him everything you've got until he bubbles, and you'll need to heal yourself frequently throughout. Use the time when he whirlwinds to get some distance from him and heal or recast your DoTs. Make sure you keep Inner Fire up at all times for the mitigation (duh!).

When he bubbles, make sure you're healed pretty close to full and throw a renew on yourself, because you'll be vulnerable while you're dispelling his bubble.

It's actually easier once he transforms into Mal'ganis, because he stops doing his whirlwind, which can easily decimate your health if you don't get away from him in time. I cast Dispersion right after he transformed (again, making sure I was fully healed before doing do) and then just burned him down, healing when I had to.

Took a lot of mana and a bit of running around, but it was fun. :)

Gave it a shot and was successful, Solo'd him on my Prot Warrior in T9+ gear. After cooldowns and such i finished at about 29% HP. was a lot easier then i thought it was going to be.

Easily taken down as an arcane mage. Kited around without popping cooldowns until he bubbled. Popped my images and took off the bubble, popped the rest of my CDs and laid into him after that, wasn't difficult by any means.

Gave me 500 rep with Ebon Blade when I completed it in patch 3.3.3. My character is human, though so a bit less for other races. Still, its clearly more than the 350 listed here.

Soloable as ret. Put on your PVE gear because he is a boss level npc and you'll need the hit rating. Use seal of corruption and blessing of kings, with shadow resist aura. Not a hard fight, just be ready to switch between judging light and wisdom if your health or mana starts to fall behind. Didn't need to blow any cooldowns, fight took about a minute. Be ready to use divine plea after healing yourself to full with a couple holy lights when he's at half health. After that point you've won.

This cave is also a pretty good place to farm gold. The mobs are all elites, but they only have 18k health and drop like flies. Each mob drops more than a gold in cash, making for about 10g per clear, plus any vendor loot and de's. It only takes about 3 minutes if you're not bad to mow down all of the packs of warlocks in the cave. Good for when you've done all 25 dailies.

Soloed as a moonkin tried resto first but damage was to slow and the mobs respwawned. Started with force of nature and starfall for an early burst then switched to rooting and starfire for the remainder, like everyone else has said if you prevent his transformation its much easier so i cycloned as soon as he emoted ~45% and then continued with the root and starfall strategy. Was pretty straight forward just used rejuv when ever he hit me then back to moonkin form. I inervated as soon as i had used ~ 8k mana but i doubt i needed to.

So the story is that Mal'Ganis is simply immortal? I'm just curious as to what his beef with the Lich King is. He knew that Arthas had to kill him to fulfill his destiny so that couldn't be the reason. Is it because Arthas betrayed the Burning Legion? Mal'Ganis wasn't even around when that happened and had nothing to do with any of that so that doesn't make any sense. But if that is the reason then I wonder if the legion is going to make an appearance in Northrend or if this is just Mal'Ganis by himself.

In case you don't know where to go:

At location (9, 48) there is a cave. Enter the cave. Make a left downward. Then a right where three mobs are doing some funky spell thing.

Cave is full of easy ellites. Warlock types who only know how to cast shadow bolt and turn into a deamond.

When you fight the boss, use the nullifier when he puts his shield up at about 50% health. After he turns into Mal'Ganis, he will hit a little harder and cast spells on random party members: Mindblast, Sleep. I think killing the priest in the chapel was a harder fight.

If you're a feral druid you have no chance in cat form, but in bear form it's easier than getting a spot to Naxx10.

Take this to use against him inside The Hidden Hollow when he puts the sphere up. I wish that I could be there to see the look on his face when you do it.
