Can be the fastest quest or the slowest quest you have done. I believe it is roughly 20% chance success.

Seems to help if you damage it once or twice first, i never was able to free them while they where CCed or untouched, but as soon as i hit them once they where freed.
Maybe lucky but worth trying.

I would agree with Bazil. I killed approximately 15 trees without luck before reading his comment. After attempting to damage the trees before using the Runebreaker my percent success went up to around 50%. Might have just been coincedence.

Confirmed

If you fail once on a mob, you can re-try the item on the same mob. Success rate suddenly increased!

And mobs are all over Grizzly Hills

Yes i also found as a warrior just shooting them with my gun the casting the item would have a 75% better rate

I had to hit them multiple times on every mob i freed. Poor luck i guess. But as an ice mage it didn't really matter, hit them freeze wait hti them again rinse repeat.

I found that in the event The Runebreaker failed, the following would result in a 100% Success rate upon trying again:

When it goes hostile, bring it to below 20% and then use the Runebreaker again. If you use it before this point your success may vary, more often than not resulting in the Runebreaker failing again.

OK - this is how it works:

Damage the giant

Use The Runebreaker and the giant shrinks

Use The Runebreaker again when the cooldown i over - and the giant is Free.
In Worst case - you have to zap him twice or so to Free him - but no need to kill anything

So this quest seems to have changed. I've had to damage them and zap them several times, assuming I ever live long enough to zap them more then twice.

Side note, if your first use fails the giant turns in to a normal mob, normal damage, no rune strike ability so don't be afraid if it fails.

Followed the instructions above to the letter, rune worked fine the first two times then failed completely four in a row. I died all 4 times. Repair bill is now at 22 gold for this quest. I'm abandoning.

Edit: Abandoned and tried again, this time I found the problem. I wouldn't recommend doing this up on the hill south of the bridge at 75,44. The item doesn't work on that hill even though the mobs are named "Runed Giant" just like the others and my minimap says I'm still in the Eastwind Shore as the quest states. You will get an "Invalid Target" message and most likely you will die.

I was just on this quest as a mage, i tried to frost nova it and click the quest item but it just wouldn't work so i popped my elemental out and let it attack it for a while, while i was clicking the quest item. At the last second when my elemental killed it i managed to free it so i got the quest and i can see the loot sparkle at its feet. But it wouldn't let me loot it though.

Just thought it was funny.

Ok, if you are worried about fighting these guys just go to 66,12. Find a Runed Giant that is Fighting a Grizzly Hills Giant and use the stone on that one. As long as the grizzly giant stays alive the runed giant will not attack you. You have to use the Runebreaker two times. The first time removes the elite status and the second time frees the giant. Boom done and done.

Hunters:
if the runebreaker fails, feign before the giant gets to you and the giant will run back to the place where you zapped it and turn back into a runed giant. Then you can try again.

Just did this as a shaman, Transform into ghost wolf and use the item keep runing until item cools down then use it again 1 giant took 7 tries so dont give up Goodluck.
Oh and they hit hard. You may end up with a big repair bill ^^

You pull them with the item, attack them without killing them and try multiple times with the item, it's most effective.

I recommend holding on to this quest and not turning it in until you get to this quest https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=11355, because I can confirm that the analyzing pick works on the giants after you use the shard on them and kill them.

One mob took me FOUR zaps in order for it to become free.

As a warrior I used the device, if it worked I was happy. If it fails, the giant will be non-elite (a weakened giant) so don't panic - you're not going up against an elite.

I hamstrung it, backed off and waited for the device to cool down (only a few secs) and then zapped it again.

Worked a treat! Just keep zapping until they become free is the best bet.

It can take as few as the first zap, or as many as 10 (I encountered one that took 9 zaps for the first one, scared me).

I think that Gavrock has made the worst runebreaker in the world.
The chance you'll succeed and actually set a giant free was like 5% with me.

The quest is easy.

1. go to fighting grounds in Boulder Hills (coords: 69, 9)
2. target any of the runed giant
3. click Gavrok's Runebreaker
4. that action will either 'free' them or it will 'weaken' them. if it weakens them, hit them with the runebreaker again. don't bother fighting them. just hit them with the runebreaker again and they'll change to 'free'.

This is suprisingly easy for Death Knights. All you have to do it use the runebreaker on a Runed Giant, and if it fails, use "Chains of Ice" and run backwards. Repeat this and you'll be fine. :3

I had no trouble with this quest at all. Just using the rune turned them friendly between a third and a half of the time.

What I came here for was to find out whether the rune would still work after freeing 4 of them. I didn't see anyone else mention it - but it does. If you plan on questing in the area where these elites roam, do NOT turn in this quest!

Tip:
You can use any CC, I'm a Retri palla, so i used repentace then u can use Gavrock's Runebreaker. It doesn't interrupt the CC. This way you can easily do the quest. I dont know if Sap or Entangling roots work, but u can try it at least.

After 46 failed attempts on many many mobs, I would recommend skipping this quest, the green reward was not worth the hour+ I spent before abandoning this quest without a single mob freed.

Very annoying quest its simple but boring.
Some ways you should try before you use gavrocks runebreaker
1.) Hit it a few times first
2.) Use it diagonally to the giant.

Also for the miners. If you mine them they give you geodesic fragments if you sell them to vendors you get quite abit.

Theese guys killed my freind so many times he didnt wana turn in the quest so he could keep the item xD and for ret palleis just use Repentance, wont break it if it fails....Good tip ^_^

What I would suggest trying is this :

Zap one of the mobs, if it doesn't turn just run away, and after the mob runs back to it's original position, zap it again and it should turn on the first go.

I did this 4 times in a row and it worked every time for me, but it may have been just me. Try it and see what happens.

edit: After coming back to do this on my mage, My method above didn't seem to work. Sorry for the disinformation.

best way to do it.

find a giant, zap it, keep running around in circles and zap it when ever you can, it will turn friendly in the end, took me 3-5min to complete the quest using this method.

and you can use it on the same mob, even tho they changes name.

Easy quest:

You can zap giant more than once, just wait for cool down (about 10 - 15 seconds). You can run around waiting for cool down, or I found an easy way by accident: Coming down the path of iron at 75,45 is a bridge, the giants won't go in the river -- they run back and forth across the bridge to chase u while u swim from one shore to the other. Easy way to kill the cool down and zap again!

- had 1 go friendly on first zap, others took 2-5 zaps.

8 Giants in a row turned evil on me. I thought my freaking quest item was broken. And btw, zapping them multiple times DOESN'T work. After 14 zaps I gave up that theory. Only thing you can do is hope that they become friendly as much as possible.

I was able to:

1. Begin summoning my flying mount (cold weather flying required)
2. Spam the quest item.
3. As the mount is summoned the quest item is used...

If successful, Yay! If not, fly away!

At 76.27 41.62 where they spawn, I was able to zap all 4 without one turning nasty on me, could just be luck or maybe there's some science to it. I tried many other places without this level of success. Good luck.

I wish I read the comments here before about trying to zap the same mob several times. However I didn't and as a result ended up killing well over 30 giants before I got my 4th freed. Freed the first mob, then failed 26 times in a row, then got the last 3 pretty fast after eachother.

Just finished this quest, Zapping Multiple times does still work, no questions about it. i killed them at first then looked it up here and tried it. 100% works in patch 3.3.3

Very simple quest as an Unholy DK, the 15% movement increase meant I could zap and run to the next one without taking any damage.

Took me 23 attempts, respawn rate is very very fast.

Just retarget the same giant .....simple....you don`t have to kill them...you can retarget them after the runebreaker has cooled down....only took me 5 giants once I figured that out.

As Lavandirah said, just retarget the same one, and use the Runebreaker over and over. It's got about a 9% chance to work, so retargeting the same giant is a lot easier than killing 100 of them. As a druid, I just targeted one, then when it was weakened, rooted it and tried over and over til it worked. Made this quest so much easier and less frustrating.

Location 69,9 area where Grizzly Hills Giants and Runed Giants are fighting. Completed quest by converting about 10 Runed Giants. FYI...good to convet them while fighting so Grizzly's keep aggro and you keep converting Runeds.

Target a Runed Giant. Use the Runebreaker provided. They either;
1. Become Freed Giants (yay)
or
2. Become Weakened Runed Giants (with about 12,000) health - very managable

They are meandering all over the place along the shore.
First three converted fine to me. Fourth I had to kill. Fifth converted. Done. Simple.

This quest just feels broken because of it's low proc rate.

If your a pally, I'd recommend using Repent repeatedly because it can take more then 60 seconds of using Gavrock's Runebreaker to finally get a proc. Since the effect of repent and the cool down are the same this becomes an exercise of just clicking over and over until you get one.

The quest item works on any Runed Giant or Weakened Giant, but may take a few tries.

Quest is extremely bad. Used item about 20 times on same mob for it to finally work. 10+ tries on every tree. Sometimes their Dark Rune buff continues to stack on you despite being shrunk, and it ticks for 2-3k a second. Good luck.

My experience suggests it's possible that after the first zap doesn't work (it won't,) burning the health bar down low could make it more susceptible to the next zap. But I did get one on the first zap once out of 9, and one on the third zap while the health was still high. But when the health was near 30%, it worked both times.

And if you go too far south so you're in the "Grizzly Hills" zone area, then the giants appear to be "invalid target." Maybe just the areas where they initially spawn. Eastwind Shore and Path of Iron areas work fine so far.

Descrizione

The rock shard you imbued should be powerful enough to break the runic magic binding my brothers.

Take it with you and find the runed giants walking north along the Eastwind Shore. Unleash the power stored in the stone and observe the results.

If it works, the runed giants should return to their senses and stop obeying the iron dwarves. If the stone fails to work, the giants may attack in a weakened state. But, what choice do we have? If we do not try, they will remain enslaved without hope.
