This quest is a reference to the quote from Warcraft 2 when the player finshes constructing a Gnomish Flying Machine, the gnome yells "I've got a Flying Machine!". Old school warcraft players should remeber this

I was able to grab all 3 sacks, but the difficult part was controlling the flyer...

Once you get close to a sack, just spam 1 (or whatever the ability is on your actionbar) and it should work...at least it did for me
oh and...
I think you can only hold one at a time...so once you get a sack, fly back to the dock thing and drop it off...hope that helps, good luck

For those who keep getting a flying machine that has rockets and not a grapple, there are TWO different flying machines. If the only one there is the one with weapons, talk to the quest giver and choose the option that asks for a new one, and it will spawn.

if you have no button for getting *out* of the flying machine, here's one solution. fly out of the area... once you leave Steel Gate, the annoying little death trap will power down and auto-eject you. no parachute tho, so fly near the ground.

if you get stuck on the platform and cannot move (or get out), try a /console reloadui. that at least allowed me to move.

I've done the quest yesterday... is easy.... just remember that u have to use the platform in the north part of the pit.
Collect the relics... then follow the street as you are walking.... just follow the street.. and stay 15 second on the platform at the north side....
Done in 4 minutes....
P.s. when you take the relics u can't fly high... just follow the street....

If you can't get the machine to fly, ensure that you have your character selected and not the vehicle.

Once you accept the quest, click on a flying machine. If there are no flying machines, talk to the NPC again. You should have a 1 key icon for grappling hook. What you are looking for are the rather large looking cauldrons with yellow goop contents - all over the place. The grappling hook is cast so you have to be a little ways away from and pointing toward the cauldron. Kinda fun. When you have one hooked, take it to one of the hanging platforms. When you are done, you should have an icon somewhere to dismount from the vehicle.

THE QUEST IS NOT BUGGED! READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY! I too thought this quest was bugged. I gave up, decided to come back and give it another try. It was then that I figured out that the controls are just not as obvious as they should be. The first time it worked for me, I was in fact sitting on a bag. However, I noticed that the bag I had picked up was not the one I was sitting on, but one a small distance away. This is quite likely the reason why some people thought that only one bag worked: only one bag has another bag directly in front of it that is within grapple range.

The grappling hook is not a sling load. I was sitting on top of specific bags trying to pick them up from various heights, and I accidentally discovered that it shoots forward, instead of lifting from below. Once I discovered this and got the hang of the controls, I was able to grab any bag at all. Here is how:

Identify a bag, and land near it.
Position yourself so that you are pointing toward the bag, approximately 15 yards away.
Press the grapple control.
If you are unable to grapple, move forward, the grapple will fire once you are the correct distance from the bag.(You may or may not need to press grapple again, I had more luck with not mashing the button)
Fly up to the drop point and deliver the goods.
Proceed to step 1.

Update: I attempted this quest again today (Tuesday morning) immediately after the server restart. I was the first one there, and the quest worked perfectly. I could loot any of the bags (well at least the first three that I needed), and it didn't matter where I positioned myself, or whether I used the mouse or the keys to control my plane.

So, if you're at your wit's end with this quest as I was, just wait for a server restart. Then rush over there and see if it works. Blizz is pretty good about restarting the servers at inconvenient times, so next time, play it to your advantage!

Worked perfectly for me, with quest helper and cartographer on.

Take the flying maching (that's just behind the quest giver). You need to pick up bags with yellow thing inside them, bags are big, hard to miss. They're on the ground as you fly down the hill. Reach the bag, press "1" and fly back to the base. There's a hook in the air with a hunter's mark above it, that's where you have to leave the bag (by pressing "1" again). Hope it hepls.

The problem lies with the bags not properly reloading.

Once a bag is picked up, there's a small (?) chance it doesn't respawn in the right place. This is a known bug and is primarily due to the early implementation of this. Oddly enough, even though it was reported in beta stages as a problem, Blizzard has yet to fix it.

Some have also reported that it's when the bags sit idle for too long, but from a programming point of view, I don't understand why that'd happen.

As noted above, waiting for a server restart is nearly the only option.

FYI, if you find yourself unable to fly, it's because of Questhelper. This made the already hellhole of a quest NIGHTMARE MODE.

I was unable to fly after mounting on the flying machine. My flying machine would just fall. I had to exit the game and re-enter before it would fly properly. I had no issue with picking up the bags.

Just completed this quest. Took less than a min. The bags are very large and there are plenty in the pit to choose from. They don't sparkle like other quest objects, but you can't miss them. They look like giant sacks of gold.

Got the 31,25 one, as well as 31,27 and 30,27. Just thought I'd mention these bags are actually pretty big =/ I was looking around for these little bags at first and completely overlooked the giant bags the size of the plane...

Turn off any addons if you can't go up. The flying is still sloppy. However hook the pot of gold and fly by the platforms that gave quest to you. Once the timer expires get another one and do this over and over. Oh if you fly out of range the plain will crash hope you have a bubble or something goes you most likely die.

It does work and it unlocks a daily to defend the area. luck all.

additional hints: point up to fly up and use space bar it is not fun to fly...

I think you need to have your flying training in order to complete this quest. I tried it before I had a flying mount and I couldn't get the thing off the ground. Later, when I had flying training, it worked just fine.

Get in the plane and just keep flying downwards until you hit the bottom (press X)get near a bag and press 1. You can be still and don't have to be on top of it. Fly upwards (press Space) Above the platform you got the plane is a hanging platform with a big flashing red arrow on it. Fly past it. You shoud get a yellow confirmation.

Repeat as neccessary

Quest is definitely bugged.

Some people are reporting not being able to fly the machine properly. Myself, I could fly around just fine, but the grappling hook would often refuse to work. Also, sometimes when I hopped in the machine, it would be the wrong version (this quest uses a grappling hook, the next one uses machine guns and rockets).

Still, you can manage to get it done if you just keep at it. The risk of death is minuscule if any.

Bug Confirmed on (July 25th, '09) ...
The only bag of relics I was able to pick up was the one that spawned in the water above the "Head" part of the excavation.

I don't know about the funny controls, mine seemed to work just fine. I did, however have the issue with the grappling hook. It looks like the grappling hook only allows you to pick up one bag (the one in the water at the top of the "waterfall"). The other bags don't allow anything. All I had to do was wait for this bag to respawn and it worked consistantly. Other than that, I had no issues.

Hover over the bag and then press the (1) key and the letter (X) key at the same time and it will grab ahold of the bag. Next press the space bar to fly up to the lift and it will drop the bag down on the lift automatically..as long as you are directly over the platform.

It's 2023 and this quest is still bugged. It's not possible for me to pick up any of the bags. Tried everything mentioned in the comments.

As of today any pet using toon can't pick up the bags from anywhere. My mele toons had no problems with it. oh, in Wrath Classic.

I've Got a Flying Machine!

The Steel Gate Chief Archaeologist wants you to transport 3 Sacks of Relics from the bottom of the site and take them to the platform on the north or south side of Steel Gate.

Use the grappling hook on the flying machine to do this.

Report back to him after you've done so.
