Yeah, you need 5 people to summon him up and shrink him down. Easy enough fight with my group, warrior, mage, 2 priests and a pally.
After he runs to make himself grow at 50% he seemed to chuck around alot his AoE shadow bolts faster.

On a side note, he can be summoned with 4 people:
"Hey, think you can summon with the 5th circle using your epic mount?"
5 seconds later, we had an ogre out XD

While attempting this encounter, he refused to shrink down three tries in a row. Each time he'd ignore the complete pentagram and enrage regardless. However, it is possible to simply nuke him down even if he enrages. With a party of an arcane/fire mage, disc/holy priest, resto druid, marks hunter, and prot warrior, we brought him to 3% before the 3-4k damage shadowbolt volleys finished us off. We would have won if we had been attacking during the ten seconds he tries to cast the enrage, but we decided to halt during that time in case that is what had been causing him to enrage regardless of the pentagram the previous two times.

Quite a buggy encounter. I strongly suggest just killing him as fast as possible, ignoring the enrage, since apparently it will usually be unstoppable.

you can pick the grimoire up, even if you are not killing him. It just drops on the ground and everyone can pick it up :)

Very frustrating event if you try to obey the "get back into the circle" rule. On 2 tries, with everybody getting into circles on the spot, it made no difference and he enraged anyway. We figured that the time lost in worrying about the circles would be better spent DPSing and that turned out to be true.

Last attempt we just ignored it and kept pounding away and he dropped without incident.

Circles must be buggy or something.

Pretty easy, and doesn't require 5 people to summon. I'm a mage and we just had 4 people stand in the circles while I blinked to the closest one and we summoned him just fine. He takes 10 seconds to enrage and it seems that the shadowbolts are the only dmg that is increased when he enrages not mele dmg.

To explain the full event....

The event takes place in a ring near the bridge to Netherstorm. There are five small circles of fire around the edge of the ring.

When characters stand in the circles, red lines form between them. So, each occupied circle is linked by a red line to the other occupied circles. When all five circles are filled, the red lines form a pentagram, and Vim'gol, an ogre warlock, is summoned.

Vim'gol will pause for a couple seconds and complain, during which time he is invulnerable. He will then attack whoever was the last character to step into a circle.

He attacks with a heavy melee hit and a Shadow Bolt Volley that hits everyone nearby. A tank, a healer, and some solid damage-dealers are highly recommended for this encounter.

At 50% health, Vim'gol announces that he's going to grow large and smash everything. He then runs to the center of the ring and channels a "growth" spell for 10 seconds. If five characters get in their circles and re-form the pentagram, it will interrupt his cast, and he will not grow. If it completes, he will be very large, dish out substantially more damage, and likely wipe the attempt.

When he dies, a container appears at his feet. Loot it for the quest item.

Some tips:

Have your tank enter the fire last. That way, he'll head directly for the tank.

Healers, ranged damage-dealers, and the tank should not move until the the growth spell is dispelled. If all five characters simply stay in their circles after the event starts, the growth will never happen. Only melee damage -dealers need to run around.

Everyone will be taking damage. Use potions and bandages to relieve pressure on the healer. Five living characters are required to stop the growth buff, so make sure you're alive at least that long.

The quest item container appears to be lootable by anyone with the quest. There is no need to be in on the kill or the summon.

Since it's an outdoor event, characters outside the group can assist with healing and damage-dealing, to break the five-man group size and make the event considerably easier.

Despite the experience of some well-geared players who have commented here, it's considerably easier to finish this event if he does not get his growth buff. Do run to the circles.

Make sure that you are not standing in the circles of fire when Vim'gol dies! If you are, he will be instantly summoned again, and at full health! You can still loot his quest item if this happens, though.

I helped with this quest as a 67 Warlock, with a 70 Prot Pally, 70 Holly Pally, 70 Resto Druid, and a 70 Rogue.

Here is how it went for us, We went to 77,31 to do the summon... our first run on him we tried to get back into the circles to stop him from growing... this was a FAILURE!

The 2nd attempt we did not bother with the circles, Warlock and Rogue just had to cut 110% and just give it all burn cooldowns and all of that to get him dead before the group died.

Moral of this story is, The quest is broken, take some heavy hiting DPS and just violate this guy otherwise you will never take him down.

To any warriors tanking this: reflecting the shadowbolts can do a lot of damage. He alternates shadowbolting you and one other (volleys, but only every other hits you), so time a reflect for about 2 seconds after he does the second volley, and you'll reflect the one on you.

When he enrages, spam reflect, but he volleys so fast you won't even catch every one of them. Plus, they do double damage, so you'll be doing 3k a pop to him.

Small warning!

He is summoned when everyone in the party is standing in a fire ring.

If, by chance, you kill him and everyone happens to be standing in a fire ring, guess what. You will summon him yet again.

Our group got him down the 'first' time - but half of us wiped when he immediately re-appeared as we were all standing in our fire ring. Guess you could say we did the quest twice...

"Vim'gol the Vile now has a 30 second respawn cooldown."
That should fix the "we are still in the circles and resummoned him" issues people had.

Also:
"A problem with interupting Vim'gol the Vile's Unholy Growth spell has been fixed."

So no more bugs I guess.

I did the entire series (5-man) with two feral druids, a balance druid, a mage, and a warlock.

I, as balance druid, did main heals with a little help from one of the feral druids from time to time.

A few of us died occasionally throughout the entire series - but it *can* be done without a full-specced healer. Just takes some work.

We stayed in the circles for this fight - the only ones leaving were melee and myself (as healer) when melee moved too far away. He got back in the middle, we got back in the circles, he didn't grow, we took him down in one try.

Having trouble finding a group? Worry not: for both quests in this chain you can take the drop whether or not you killed the boss. In fact, I got all five group quests done simply by following allies around (I'm horde) and helping them - that way they don't mind when you take the quest item.

As of August 13, 2007 you can still summon with four people. After reading the above post I thought they fixed it, and was running back and forth. I was sadly mistaken.

This is part of the quest chain to open up the Ogri'la daily quests. You have to kill five different elite Sons of Gruul. They are VERY tough and you must have a proper 5-man party to handle them (Tank, Healer, 3 DPS). You might even want to bring along some extra people that can help out of party.

For this quest, and all the other ones like it (Slaag, Maggoc, etc), you can be in a raid and get them killed, but you wont be able to loot (or open) the item.
On the bright side.. all you have to do is leave the raid and you can loot (or open) the item!

I found this especially helpful 'cause all the ranged DPS can just stay in their rings and not worry about the guy getting bigger and whatnot. :D

So if you feel like doing these quests with your entire guild or something, it's possible! Yay! :D

I've soloed all the pre-quests that leads to this as a 80 Death Knight, but I unsure if this is doable since it says in the quest log "..must be summoned by yourself, and four others.."

You'll need at least two other players to help you summon him. Have all 3 players stand in the circles, and then two players need to run to the empty nearby circles to activate them before the original ones they were standing in wear off.

I've tried several times to summon him on my own with epic flying mount + 20% mount speed and am unable to do so.

I just did this quest on my Horde priest with the help of 3 alliance players. We did the trick mentioned above about going between the circles. Apparently it doesn't have to be a group of players, but can be just 4-5 players in general.

The 2 pre quests are quite easy solo. But its impossible to try and find a group for this one. Especially since everyone is busy with their own new expansion stuff right now.

This can be 3 or 4 manned during wotlk

-first have 3 people stand on 3 different circles
-have 2 people log off and go on alts
-bring their alts to the place and have them go on two different circles
-open a second wow client
-log yourself off by logging on to the second client
-log on your main character
-and your alts should still be there standing on the circles

Same thing can be done to 4 man it, only need one person to bring their alt.

I did them alone as an 80 druid until i got this one. You need to have at least 4 people to complete the summoning. I am 99.99% sure you cannot summon this guy alone.

You can summon this boss with help from the opposing faction.

I (a moonkin) was solo but helped a group of alliance summon him, and even got to loot the quest item too after he died!

PS. You don't need to get the tag on any of these bosses. If you have the quest you can loot the quest item.

You need five people to stand in the flame circles to summon this guy. Pretty sure it can't be done solo... which is annoying as the Winter Veil achievement needs this :|

Were trying to do this quest line with my warrior and druid alt (dual account) when I hit this dead end.. I just couldn't get a group for it, but I managed to get two others to help for a minor reward.

But we just couldn't get the mount or blink trick to work, no matter how much I tried the previous connection was always removed when the new one was made.

So I fetched an alt, placed it in a circle and alt+f4 to crash the game. Then there were a tiny amount of time where the game still thought the char were logged in, and during that time I logged back in on my warrior.

Mission successful! The enrage in the middle wasn't any major trouble for a 80 fury and resto druid, and also a 73 and 67 death knight.

The level of the player doesn't matter either. Our lock ported in a lvl 13 and we managed to get it done.

2-4-09 you can still 4 man him, but Demonic Circle doesn't seem to work anymore.

Patch 3.1.0 is supposed to be changing this quest so that only one person is needed to summon him.I t will still take 5 to hit all the wards during the actual fight though.

I was also able to do it with 3 toons by activating 3 circles, then having 2 toons run to the empty 2 spots. The red lines faded pretty much as soon as the toons left their circles, but Vim'gol spawned anyway.

As of patch 3.1 you can solo this quest. I stayed in the ring while my pet attacked, it didn't stop his growth but he is pretty easy to DPS down as a level 80 BM Hunter with a core hound.

Was stated in the 3.1 patch notes, only need 1 toon to summon, but more to interrupt the buff. Not needed. Just now did it as a 0/14/57 DK, popped Army and Gargoyle and he was dead before any of the ghouls died or the gargoyle flew away. Lvl 80 S5 blue pvp set geared Unholy DK.

I just soloed this with my enh shaman. No problems summoning - was on my fast flyer on ground, ran through all circles and then popped wolves. He enlarged with 8% left and was down soon after.

I just soloed the quest with a lv80 Holy Paladin.

To summon him just get on your mount and pass by all the 5 fire rings when riding. Then the boss will appear when you touch the last one.

Easy solo on my survival hunter. Grulloc gave me more trouble then this punk. Just keep mend pet up and feign death as necessary and just burn him.

I just summoned him solo. I don't know if they just changed it, or if it was broken from someone wiping before me. I didn't see any bones. All I did is land my drake in a circle, and he shouted and appeared.

I just did this quest alone.
After I red the comments I thought "Damn, I will need more ppl"
I landed in one of the circles and *POOF* he appears.
I start attacking asap but couldnt do much with his 100% damage bonus Buff.
But as a lvl 80 DK tank with 31k hp it didnt do much :)

Can be soloed by an 80 resto druid. I used a flask of Stoneblood, other than that just MotW, Thorns, etc.

Just healing through his damage seemed to work pretty well - even once he enraged the damage wasn't too difficult to heal through, did pop barksin and innervate, though. Shifted out of tree form to keep moonfire up on him, it killed him fairly quickly because he doesn't have too much health(about 97k, according to WoWhead).

Patch 3.1.0 :
The fight event for the "Grim(oire) Business" quest at Vim'gol's Circle in the Blade's Edge Mountains now only requires one character to stand within a fire circle in order to summon Vim'gol the Vile. However, it still takes five characters, one in each of the fire circles, in order to interrupt Vim'gol the Vile's Unholy Growth cast.

His enrage is only 100% more damage, so its manageable if you have some sort of migration. Soloed as a lv 80 feral dps druid in bear form.

I was only one quest away from the Blades Edge achievement for the last six months. When they nerfed this so one person could summon it, I ran in, and killed him before he even targeted me. I dropped my Army of the Dead, and he died before they despawned. He DID start talking, and get all big, but he died the second he got big, and before he cast anything.

Now that it only requires one person to summon, it's pretty soloable if you can take the hits. As an 80 pally, I was able to burn him down so that he died just as he was finished casting Unholy Growth, his enrage. Didn't even have to heal myself. Doesn't hit too hard on plate, but clothies might want to bring a tank.

I just did this quest for the BEM achivement and you no longer have to have help summoning him, stepping into any of the circles summons him straight away.

Incorrect. All you need is to stand inside ONE of those fire looking runes, between the stones, then he spawns immediately. As stated above by other posters.

I was able to summon and destroy the creature solo as an 80 demon lock with only stepping into one fire ring. I just did steady DPS and downed him in less than a minute.

Just a note to say that this seems to have been changed recently to no longer require several people to summon Vim'Gol. Simply stepping on any fire circle spawned him.

No problem to solo this at level 80. Took longer to fly there than it did to do the quest.

Soloed on a Shadow priest with mostly ilvl 232 gear (Tier 9, Ony, etc). Summoned him, popped my Shadowfiend to "tank", and burned him down before he could even finish casting his growth spell.

Seems you don't need 5 man to summon him. I simply stepped on one of the circles and Vim'Gol spawned istantly.

Popped mirror image + trinket macro and stuff and he went down in 10 seconds (lvl 80 arcane mage)

you CAN solo summon and defeat him. As an 80 holy pally, mounted up and ran through all the fire circles, cannot interrupt the enrage but the damage is still so little that i could holy shock through it.

Solo'd as 80 Surv Hunter. You don't need anyone but yourself to summon him. Just kited him and let my pet take a few hits. Kill Shot'ed him before he enraged. Easy pesy. :)

Level 80 Affliction Warlock. - Solo with a void Tank.

Dont stand in the main circle...just in one of the small fire cirles near it. This started my event no problems.

I had two DOTs on the mob and healed Void as required. Yes the Mob did hit harder once he enlarged but it didnt pose a serious problem. I wouldnt have liked to over DPs'd and got the aggro on me...think he would have killed me quickly if he went for me.

If you are a herbalist there was a nearby Dreaming glory for an additional buff.

Had 98k health, and went down fairly quickly in a first 4 icc geared mage (arcane spec obviously.) Did notice it took several moments to summon him, but once summoned it went quick.
Also, does count for the blades edge loremaster achievement.

Was not very hard to solo, as people already have mentioned, he can be summoned by just stepping into one of the circles alone, by yourself.

My level 80 healing priest used an alt spec for shadow to do this. My DPS isn't great in Shadow, about 2k (20k heals in main spec). Yet, this was an easy solo, even for me!

I landed in the middle of the summoning circle, then walked to one of the outer circles, and the boss shows up.

I sent in Shadow Fiend to take the initial threat. I added a couple of DoT's (SW:P and Devouring Plague) and made sure those were kept up. When I got the threat, I used "Fade" to give it back to my "pet" until he died. Then it was a lot of normal DPS with nothing special. From the experience with the other bosses in this chain, I did a Greater Heal on myself the moment I his 75-80 percent health, since, as a clothie, I can go down fast. Kept shields up at all times.

When he enlarged, I just kept up the pressure. I didn't worry about interrupting him with the circles (didn't know it would work in a solo). He is immune to Silence, and he was at about 5% when he ran back to me, during that time I had healed myself once during his channeling to 100% and then took him down.

2 Greater heals, 1 Shadowfiend, 2 Dot's always up, Shields up, and bang away at him until he's dead.

Just did it. I deathcoiled during his grow and it seemed to interrupt.

Ok, to start this quest you will all have to stand in each of the 5 circles, around the raised platform where your tank will tank him. Only after he has been summoned, about half way through the battle he will start to grow, every must get back to their circles, to stop him from growing, then continue with the battle.

Should you die, you can run either north or south to get back to the area.

If you don't have coords, In Blades edge, head to the road that leads to netherstorm , and as soon as you get to the place where you would enter netherstorm head due south. Good Luck.

In WotLK, you can just go through all the circles on a fast mount as quickly as possible and the boss will spawn, 100% solo. Just tried it 5 min ago, works perfectly. You don't have to fly and going through three circles is sufficient to spawn him.

There is one more gronn to be slain: Skulloc Soulgrinder. He keeps himself hidden away, but there is a way to coax him forth.

He was trained by an ogre warlock known as Vim'gol the Vile, whose grimoire you must retrieve!

Vim'gol must be summoned by standing within a fire ring at his circle. Find Vim'gol's Circle in the mountains, to the northeast, near the Broken Wilds.

<name>, if you hear Vim'gol talk about growing bigger, get people back into each of the five fire rings to interrupt his casting!
