I don't think the drop rate in Moonglade is accurate. I fished between the bridges nearest the druid trainer, and caught 5 in 10 minutes. This is a lot safer than any of the other places listed.

Currently these fish have two uses:

1 - Craftsman's Writ - Lightning Eel Which increases your Argent Dawn rep by 150 per turn-in.
2 - Make Stormchops added in patch 2.3

Side-note: El's Angling has alot of into on fishing times etc

After 50 or so casts with no lightning eel in WPL I suspect the drop rates have been altered as a result of the 2.3 patch. Droprate in Deadwind pass seemed to be approximately 5% over a few hundred casts.

I fished from 5:10pm to 5:40pm in WPL and caught 10 lightning eels. I didn't see any pools of fish, I suppose it's all open water there, but it's still a reasonable drop rate.

The fishing skill varies depending on the region you are fishing in. If you are kinda low on the fishing end I suggest getting to about 200 skill and buying some Aquadynamic Fish Attractors or Sharpened Fishing Hooks either an Engineer or the AH, then heading out to the Moonglade and fishing in the lake there. You will level your fishing, catch the occassional bloated fish containing useful stuff, and eels. This is also a great place to get your fishing up as these fish are used past 225 to get you moving with the cooking skill. Once you get to about 300 fishing you will be able to move on to better spots. The above info is generally correct and time of day does matter with the exception of the BC raid zones.

After fishing for approximately an hour in Moonglade, starting at 5pm Server time and ending at 6 pm server time. I managed 26 of these Eels.

Edit: I was fishing within the town in Moonglade. Near the moonwell. Not sure if it really matters where you stand. It also seems that the time restriction on the Eels is gone. I still fish in Moonglade if I am in need of Lightning Eels, I've had a lot of success fishing in the zone.

I've been fishing in WPL to get my fishing up and I've caught 10 in about 30 minutes. was about 5:37pm server time.

I was trying to fish last night, pretty much non-stop, and then a little extra this morning in WPL pretty close to the bottom coord (56.3, 76.9) and I received absolutely no eels. This is the total count:

112 Raw Redgill
25 Raw Sunscale Salmon

I had maybe ~5 casts where I missed reeling in, due to playing without sound and watching TV at the same time.

Trying again, further inland, west of Andorhal.

I should note, I am doing all this with no lures, but I started at 403 combined fishing, and at the end of the above I am at 430.

I noticed that I have a few times where I have absolutely nothing on the line for the full duration of the cast... so I am applying a +100 Lure.

Fishing in Maraudon for Raw Redgills (to skill up my cooking) at 1:30pm server time actually (surprisingly) ended up netted me:

Just fished up 2 of these in about 50 casts in Deadwind Pass by the lake around Karazhan

Was around 12:45 A:M at the time, so I might have just gotten very lucky, or it might be that their drop rate is better from 12-6 am AND pm

The timing restrictions on the lightning eel have been removed. As of what patch, I have no idea, but no one should have downrated Bloke182's post.

Also, his rates are accurate. if you're fishing in Deadwind pass, the catch rate is far better in the northernmost lake by the pass than it is by Karazhan. Fishing by karazhan, I caught 5 over the span of an hour. Moved to the northern lake and caught 32 in the subsequent hour. Given that people with wowhead looter running could be fishing at either place, this likely accounts for the fish averaging out at 10% for the whole zone, although the northern area is 12.5 percent by my calculations over the span of 250 catches.

Edit: Also this is patch 3.0.9, not 3.0.8 as wowhead has my post recorded.

I don't know if the drop rate has lessen, but i imagine that if i stayed for an hour like Notadin then i might have gotten better results but by far the Northern most lake is the best bet to fish up Lightning Eels

I also caught a Lightning Eel in Deadwind pass (42, 28). I caught it on my 30th cast, during which time I caught:

I caught the Driftwood while sitting at 415 skill (380 + 25 from Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole). After this I attached a Sharpened Fish Hook and drank some of Captain Rumsey's Lager and had no more problems.

That makes this fishing hole a great spot for working towards The Outland Gourmet.

While Wowhead database shows EPL as having the most fishing spots where this eel has been caught, Deadwind Pass is certainly better. I spent about 3 hours in EPL (at the big lake) trying to catch one and didn't get a single one. I finally shifted to Deadwind Pass and caught 10 in 45 minutes.

Note: I was at 315-325 fishing skill at Deadwind Pass with half of my catches being trash (weeds and the like). So I suspect my actual eel count would have been much higher with a higher fishing skill.

While in Felwood at about 2:00 game time and as a level 220 Fisherman, I tried fishing a couple hundred yards downstream from Bloodvenom Falls and scored 5 Lightning Eel in about 10 minutes. Seemed like about every 7 casts or so I'd collect one.

These are listed as one of the Craftman's Writ quest items in 1.11 stuff.

The idea is you will get a random request for items out of some 20 different possibilities. You give a token + the items and get an Insignia.

It seems the Lightning eels are only catchable during the day (6am-6pm), while at night you catch Plated armorfish instead.

I fished a bunch of Lightning eels up while waiting for a guild ZG run inside ZG.... when i went back later that night i caught no eels but a bunch of Plated Armorfish instead.

I noticed just now while fishing in karazhan that I was catching all armorfish and nightfins, when it turned 6am i suddenly started catching eels and sunscales instead....

both lightning eels and plated armorfish are used in new AD quests so it makes sense to hold onto both.

Feralas, crazy drop rate. Only fished at the river INSIDE Camp Mojache, north of Camp and the 225 fishing quest place west of Camp. Using 2 aquamarine fish attractors I walked away with 10 of 'em on my stringer , with the odd blackmouth, firefin, and cookables.

OK, I have MAXED fishing(527). I spent 30 mins. fishing in 3 different areas for these fish from the list above. This is how it broke down. I started in EP @ 11:30PMish & caught 2,and also caught Armorfish. After 12AM server time, I didn't catch any more, and actually stayed here for about 10 more mins. just to be sure. Next, I went to the other side of the Silithus mountains, like the idiot above suggested, on the Ferelas side(The Forgotten Coast). I caught multiple fish at once there, but no Eels or Armorfish. Last, I went to Deadwind Pass. I did catch Armorfish there, but again, no Eels. I'm Alliance so I really can't go try Mojache, but at this point, I feel there may be something to the question that you can only catch the Eels during the day. I'll try during the day hours tomorrow & post an update with my findings. Good Luck!
UPDATE: I went back to EP at about 10:30PM Server time & was able to catch 21 Eels & many Armorfish. I was watching the clock pretty close as Midnight came, and caught an Eel at 11:58PM. After Midnight I stayed & fished for another 40 Mins., and continued to catch Armorfish(Though way fewer), but no Eels. At this point, I'm going to say that there is definitely something to catching the Eels before 12AM Server time. Hope this was helpful!
UPDATE 2: I have made the decision the best time to catch these fish in an available area is between 6AM-12PM Server time.(Sunshine symbol)

so... I did some research:

Felwood: 12:15 - 12:45 PM. Got 16 out of 100 = 16% drop rate.. Thats pretty good=)

Moonglade: 01:00 - 01:30 PM. Got 7 out of 100 = 7% droprate.. Not too happy about it.

Deadwind Pass, Karazhan: 01:30 - 01:45 PM. Got 2 out of 50 = 4% droprate.. :(

ZG(need to be in raid for entering, just ask a friend): 02:00 - 02:15 PM. Got 4 out of 50 = 8% droprate.

Back to felwood confirming the nice drop rate..

Felwood: 02:30 - 03:00 PM. Droprate confirmed. Caught 15 Lightning Eels out of 100 fish. 15% droprate.

So I would say Felwood are good for fishing Eels, maby the best place :)

As of Patch 2.3 Lightning Eels are now used in the Recipe: Stormchops which require 1x Clefthoof Meat and 1x Lightning Eel. This recipe is a random reward from the Daily Cooking Quest provided by The Rokk. He can be found at 61,15 in Shattrath's Lower City. For those of you without a /loc mod he's right under the NW Bridge that leads to Terokkar Forest.

On another note this affect is really alot of fun. Our guild tested it out on a Karazhan run when we were on the Nightbane encounter. During the adds phase all you could see was sparks of lightning flying all over the place. Not to mention it also has to hit critters as you run by them. I forgot I had the buff on at one point until a spark flew from me and killed a rat. ><

Got 5 in 10 minutes at Bloodvenom Falls in Felwood. Stood at 41,49 around 5:00pm (I don't think the time matters because I've been catching them here ever since) using the Big Iron Fishing Pole and Bright Bubbles. This is also an excellent spot for Raw Sunscale Salmon which can be turned in to Poached Sunscale Salmon that restores +6 health every 5 minutes. Cooking skill of 250 required.

For all you fellow finishing obsessives, there is a great mod out there that I have found to be extremely helpful. It's called:

Fishing Buddy.

Not too creative but it works. It has a Time of Day feature that let's you track at which times you caught which fish. I'm not sure if the last few patches have changed whether certain fish are diurnal or nocturnal but pre-BC this mod was a must have for me. Additionally, it really helps since it keeps track of where you caught certain fish and at what drop rate.

Pre-BC I made a small fortune selling stonescale eels (certain then-highlevel alchemy pots required the oil you make from the fish). Alas, these days no one seems to care so much with the advent of elixirs (tho I do love that they persist through death). Once the server comes back online (stupid Tuesday downtime, I always seem to get Tuesday as my day off) I'll start farming and, hopefully, have some good statistics as to where you can find these and other helpful fish.

I found a good spot for these sorta, When you enter Sunken Temple (ST) or Temple of Atal' Hakkar when you reach the water fish there. Party member needed some fish so I caught some for his pet.

So in my opinion this place has some good drops :)

This is over 3 days - usually 1-4am server - but some off times

I would log in, fish a lure or two
- and then go defend something on another of my 70's
- THen come back and use another lure

The best place to catch these is the SS isle with this highest catch rate (13%) or Ferelas with the second highest (10%). I dont know what the skill difference is between the 2 places. I had no get aways on SS isle with 340 skill, Nat pagle rod +25 and sharpened hook +100

If you decide to eat these make sure no one is sheeping, trapping, etc. The bolts from this food hit random targets with no regard for crowd controlled mobs. At least that has been my experience using them. Great for AoE farming though if you want a little extra damage boost.

These can be found in the little lake outside of Karazhan.
Here's what I got as a sample (500 fishing):

You guys are either extremely slow or dont have the brains to put 1 and 1 together. Lighting Eel CURRENTLY have no use, however have you ever heard of The BURNING CRUSADE? yes this is an expansion for the game you and I both love. now to answer all your question... Why are they here now? Well at Blizzard, its important to keep things balanced in the WoW community (hint: nerfing items/ character skills). Now you may ask, How does this have anything to do with Lighting Eel? EVERYTHING! Blizzard incorporated these into the game early so when the expansion does come out, the community stayes BALLANCED! (as least as much as they can control) This is so people (like you) start collecting these Eels and Plated Armor Fish. This way when the expansion does come out, prices on these eels (and whatever they are going to be used for) dont skyrocket! now there is always going to be the first rush. For example: when the Enchanted bags were released, prices increased dramatically because they were used in the making of these new bags that NO ONE had. This expansion is going to do the same thing. Prices are going to rocket up when all this new crap starts coming out. Now if there are Lighting Eel and Plated Armorfish already spread throughout the community, prices stay far more reasomable then if they were just released with all the new patterns and enchants and everything else. BALANCE is EVERYTHING! So my final word and advice to YOU is: Dont eat/feed them to your pets! and Stock Up! cause when the expansion is released, you will be pulling in lots of $$$ either from the Eel themselves, or the products produced from them.

Caught 3 in 10 mins in Lake Mennar (Azshara). Fishing skill at 270 with +25 pole and fish were getting away until I put a fish attractor on.

I think it's used in some sort of rare enchant or rare weapon, armor or something like that, i got one ... will so go catch more and try to sell them to anyone =))

noted that the time of day influences catch rates.

At 11amST, i decided to do a little experiment.

Before noon, I caught 0 eels out of 100 catches
After noon, I caught 7 eels out of 100 catches

So it would seem that fishing between 12:00ST and 18:00ST does increase your eel catching

Technically, it can be white for the sole purpose of being pet food, but who knows, maybe we'll get somewhere with it.

I think I'll store a stack of these and Plated Armorfish on my alt, just in case.

I fished at frostfire hotsprings in winterspring. After one hour these were my results
Whitescale Salmon 68
Plated Armorfish 35
Nightfin Snapper 33
Sunscale Salmon 29
Lightning Eel 26
Redgill 11
and some other odds and ends.

Hope this helps someone looking for lightning eel and plated armorfish.

pets happyness gain is dependant on their lvl vs. the lvl of the food, not what kind of pet vs. what kind of food. 60 pets gain 35 from like 35+ food I think

Well, seems nobody knows what the linghtning thingy over here is, but then why are people paying 27s per each one? not for a whole stack, but for just ONE...

This fish, along with Plated Armorfish, has no ues in the game and no one seems to know any use for either of them.. Got some stacks of each fish on my alt hopeing they will get useable sometimes..

Since no one seems to have posted anything truly useful about what this eel is actually used for (other then the obvious quest), I'll post here. These eels are also used for cooking "Stormchops".

I got a recipe from a daily quest starting in shat lower city. The "Stormchops" recipe creates a buff that lasts 30 minutes and makes random lightning bolts shoot out and hit enemies.

This fish is eventually used in a Burning Crusade recipe.

Stormchops
Use: Charges you with energy, causing lightning to occasionally zap nearby enemies for the next 30 minutes.

The recipe is obtained from the barrel of fish obtained doing cooking dailies in Shattrath City. It's pretty rare. I eventually got mine by buying barrels of fish from the timewalking vendor when BC timewalking was in effect.

Supposedly it is also possible to get it by doing cooking dailies in Dalaran Northrend.

It's a not very useful gimmick. Basically it will aggro random critters as you walk by.

It is easily fished in the Verdantis River in Feralas. My fishing is 300 and I don't need a lure.

I don't believe there is a restriction as to what time you decide to fish. I fished these up and the northern most pool in Deadwind Pass. (42.6,28.0)

Not sure if the craftsmans writs for lightning eel will be a hot item in SoD but with all the surprising changes...it might be. I am going to hold them in the hundreds just to be safe. I fished with 3 toons in Moonglade for about 45 minutes and got 41. Fishing skill 175 with bright baubles still fails to catch fish there but my toons at 225 fishing never missed if they used the bauble but did miss without it. Either way, not sure I can really recommend going there altogether. Ended up with 138 raw redgill, 35 mithril trout, 85 raw sunscale salmon, 1 green boe (ok that surprised me) and 42 oily blackmouth. I am likely going to make my home base fishing hole that tiny lil pond in western winterspring once I can get there.
