Talent Builds for Protection Warrior Tank in Wrath of the Lich KingWarrior

The Deep Prot build, which uses the full Protection tree to unlock iconic abilities of the Warrior Tank such as Devastate, Sword and Board, Shockwave and Warbringer.

The Unrelenting Assault build, which invests a lot of talent points in the Arms tree to unlock the Unrelenting Assault talent for increased personal damage at the expense of utility and AoE threat.

If you have issues to perform your rotation with low level gear during leveling or as a fresh lvl 80, consider rage conservation talents such as Focused Rage, Improved Heroic Strike or Puncture as shown in the Rage issues variant build. These talents are less valuable with the more gear you have and the harder the content is, since end-game bosses will usually fill your rage bar faster than you can deplete it.

Improved Disciplines can be useful against a handful of raid bosses, especially paired with the Glyph of Shield Wall, if the combined cooldown reduction allows more usage of Shield Wall in the same encounter. Take the talent points from Cruelty.

Tactical Mastery is a good filler talent on your way to Impale and Deep Wounds because it lets you retain the 25 rage you need to use Shattering Throw immediately after swapping to Battle Stance.

Improved Charge is a good alternative to Improved Heroic Strike, especially in dungeons where you use your mobility the most.

Safeguard is a niche talent that the Protection Warrior can unlock to act as an extra defensive cooldown to protect another tank in a 2-tanks encounter. Take the talent points from Cruelty.

A boss with a fast swing speed (≤1.5 seconds such as Anub'Rekhan, or dual-wielding such as Patchwerk) increases the probability that you will proc Revenge often between your GCD, to mash the Revenge key and take advantage of the reduced cooldown from the Unrelenting Assault talent.

On the other hand, a boss with a slow swing speed (≥2 seconds such as Thaddius, or 2.5s such as Kel'Thuzad or Malygos), further reduced by damage mitigation effects such as Thunder Clap or Frost Fever, won't punch you fast enough to reliably proc Revenge in-between GCDs, which greatly diminishes the effect of the Unrelenting Assault talent.

Second Wind can be replaced by Improved Charge to progress down the Arms tree.

You can trade 1 point in Armored to the Teeth to unlock Juggernaut for additional mobility in combat at the cost of ~2% DPS.

Even as UA, you can spec into Vigilance + Glyph of Vigilance for a ~10% threat increase while only doing ~3% less damage than the main build.

If you wish to improve your AoE threat potential, in dungeons for example, you can spec into Improved Thunder Clap instead of Gag Order and Toughness. You will lose a bit of single-target threat and survivability but gain stronger frontloaded AoE on pull to control groups of mobs more easily.

If your raid group has no Arms Warrior or Combat Rogue providing the Blood Frenzy or Savage Combat debuff to increase the physical damage of the raid by 4%, you can spend more points in the Arms tree for it but will trade ~13% personal DPS and threat in the process from losing Enrage and Armored to the Teeth.

The Unrelenting Assault build was born in the early days of Wrath of the Lich King from the interaction between the Unrelenting Assault and Improved Revenge talents. This enabled the Warrior to spam Revenge almost infinitely when tanking melee enemies and cleaving them down two-by-two with very high DPS, especially for a tank.
The build was quite popular in Naxxramas thanks to the very easy tuning of the raid back then, which allowed tanks to be relatively reckless with their gear choices to further increase the damage of Revenge and exceed the threat output of the traditional Deep Prot build.

However, it lost some popularity once Ulduar came out and with it more challenging encounters incentivizing more conservative gear choices.
A couple buffs to Devastate in 3.2.0 and 3.3.2, more than doubling the damage of the spell, seemingly put the nail in the coffin of the Unrelenting Assault build which could not compete in single-target threat anymore, until Revenge also received a 50% damage buff quickly after in 3.3.3 which brought Unrelenting Assault at its peak power, capable of dishing out the most threat and damage of all tanks.

Three months later, Blizzard had enough of this design that basically reduced the Protection Warrior playstyle to 90% usage of Revenge every GCD and decided to nerf the interaction in 3.3.5 by making Revenge only usable once per block/dodge/parry, instead of unlimited for 5 seconds following a single block/dodge/parry. After this last nerf, the build could not compete on single-target threat anymore since it could rarely use Revenge more than once every 2nd or 3rd GCD and had no good filler abilities to use in the meantime.Talents for Protection Warrior Tank in Wrath of the Lich KingProtection Tree Talents

Shield Specialization

Shield Specialization is both a mitigation and threat talent, increasing your block chances by 5% as well as generating extra rage when you block, dodge or parry. It's especially strong in AoE situations when paired with Shield Block, as the dozens of guaranteed blocked attacks will fill your rage bar instantly.

Improved Thunder Clap

Improved Thunder Clap is a mandatory talent that doubles the attack speed slowing effect of Thunder Clap, greatly reducing incoming damage. It also increases its damage by 30%, contributing to Thunder Clap being one of your primary sources of AoE threat and damage.

Incite

Incite increases the critical chances of Heroic Strike, Cleave and Thunder Clap by 15%.

Anticipation

Anticipation increases your dodge chances by 5%. Avoidance from talents is not affected by diminishing returns.

Last Stand

Last Stand is a defensive cooldown that increases your maximum and current HP by 30% for 20 seconds. The cooldown can be reduced down to 2 minutes with Glyph of Last Stand.

Improved Revenge

Improved Revenge is an essential talent that greatly increases the damage of your Revenge, making it your hardest hitting ability outside of cooldowns. It also makes your Revenge ability strike two enemies at once.

Shield Mastery

Shield Mastery increases your total block value by 30% and reduces the cooldown of Shield Block by 20 seconds, from 60 to 40 seconds.

Toughness

Toughness increases the total armor value from your items by 10%, providing a significant boost to your damage mitigation. It also reduces the duration of movement slowing effects which is only useful in PvP situations.

Focused Rage
& Puncture

Focused Rage and Puncture reduce the rage cost of key abilities of the Protection Warrior's kit, helping your maintain your core rotation in low rage situations. These talents can be useful early on, during the leveling process or with low gear score. However, they lose all value as you progress towards harder content where more dangerous enemies ensure your rage bar is always full.

Improved Spell Reflection

Improved Spell Reflection is a niche PvP talent that extends the Reflection effect to the 4 closest party or raid members within 20 yards.

Improved Disarm

Improved Disarm reduces the cooldown of your Disarm ability and causes the disarmed target to receive an additional 10% damage for the 10 seconds duration of the effect. Unfortunately, all raid bosses in WotLK are immune to disarm effects as far as we know and can't be affected by this damage increase.

Improved Disciplines

Improved Disciplines reduces the cooldown of Shield Wall, Retaliation and Recklessness by 1 minute. This talent is excellent if you are leveling in dungeons, as it lets you use Retaliation more frequently for big AoE pulls. It's also great paired with Glyph of Shield Wall if the combined cooldown reduction (from 5 minutes down to 2 minutes) lets you use an extra Shield Wall to soak a dangerous boss mechanic.

Concussion Blow

Concussion Blow is a long 5 seconds stun and a high damage instant ability that can help you control and peel an enemy. It's not the most exciting use of a talent point but it's a requirement to unlock Vigilance.

Gag Order

Gag Order adds a 3 seconds silence effect to your Shield Bash and Heroic Throw, facilitating ranged pulls with pesky casters. It also increases the damage of Shield Slam by 10%, making it a mandatory talent.

One-Handed Weapon Specialization

One-Handed Weapon Specialization essentially increases all your damage done by 10% since you are always using a one-handed melee weapon paired with a shield. Must have.

Improved Defensive Stance

Improved Defensive Stance reduces all magic damage received by 6% and triggers an Enrage effect whenever you block, parry or dodge an attack. While Enraged, your physical damage done is increased by 10%. With a 12 seconds duration, this effect is basically permanent with a little bit of avoidance.

Vigilance

Vigilance is a 30 minutes buff you can put on any player in your raid. While under this effect, 10% of their produced threat is transferred to you and they also take 3% less damage. Additionally, the cooldown on your Taunt ability is reset every time they are hit. The primary usage of this talent is to increase your threat generation by putting the buff on a high threat damage dealer, paired with Glyph of Vigilance. However, there are many other ways to use this buff, for example, to reduce the damage taken by another tank or to infinitely reset the cooldown of your Taunt if you need to pick many adds in a fight.

Vitality

Vitality increases your total strength by 6% and stamina by 9%. It also now grants an extra 6 Expertise, originally from the old Defiance talent.

Safeguard

Safeguard reduces the damage taken by the target of your Intervene by 30% for the next 6 seconds. It's a niche talent that can be used to turn your Intervene into an external defensive cooldown to protect another tank. Be careful when using it as the next hit redirected to you after you Intervene is not reduced by 30%. More popular in PvP and arenas.

Warbringer

Warbringer makes your Charge, Intercept and Intervene abilities usable in combat and in any stance, essentially removing the need to stance dance anytime you want to use mobility skills. This talent makes zooming from one group of mobs to another extremely simple and lets you retain your pooled rage for threat. Additionally, using Intervene removes all movement impairing effects.

Devastate

Devastate is the default filler ability of the Protection Warrior's rotation. It's a superior version of Sunder Armor, combining the armor reduction effect with extra damage. It scales with your weapon damage and attack power, plus deals extra damage for each application of the Sunder Armor debuff on the target.

Critical Block

Critical Block grants a 60% chance to block double the amount of damage every time you block an attack. It also increases the critical strike chances of Shield Slam by 15%, making it a mandatory talent both for damage mitigation and threat.

Sword and Board

Sword and Board (SnB) is the defining ability of the Protection Warrior in WotLK. It gives your Revenge and Devastate abilities a 30% chance to reset the cooldown of Shield Slam and remove its rage cost for the next 5 seconds. This talent greatly increases your Shield Slam usage in combat and thus your threat and damage output. It also revitalizes the rigid rotation from TBC with an unpredictable proc turning the Protection Warrior playstyle into a more engaging spell priority system. SnB also increases the critical strike chances of your Devastate by 15%.

Damage Shield

Damage Shield reflects 20% of your total block value as damage back to the attacker every time you take or block their attacks. It does not proc however when you avoid an attack (dodge, parry, miss). This talent generates a lot of passive damage and threat, especially in AoE situations.

Shockwave

Shockwave is the new ultimate ability of the Protection tree. It sends a wave of force in a frontal cone of 10 yards, damaging and stunning all enemies for 4 seconds. A great CC and AoE ability, albeit the cone is rather narrow and takes practice to use efficiently.
Shockwave is best used as a peel tool to control and mitigate damage. While it may seem like a good ability for AoE damage and threat, in more cases than not it's actually a damage and threat loss. Stunning mobs is not always desirable as it prevents generating rage from the incoming damage and Shield Specialization, Revenge procs, and the passive damage from Damage Shield. As much as possible, try to avoid using Shockwave on pull and prefer waiting until you have generated enough rage to perform your rotation and right after putting Revenge on cooldown.

Fury Tree Talents

Armored to the Teeth

Armored to the Teeth converts your armor into attack power at a rate of 3 AP per 108 Armor. As a tank, wearing high armor pieces for damage mitigation, this talent provides a damage and threat increase similar to Cruelty.

Cruelty

Cruelty increases your critical strike chances by 1/2/3/4/5%.

Improved Demoralizing Shout

Improved Demoralizing Shout increases the attack power reduction effect of Demoralizing Shout by 40%. A substantial damage reduction that you should spec into if not already provided by another class in your raid.

Piercing Howl

Piercing Howl slows all enemies within 10 yards by 50% for 6 seconds. It's a great peel tool to kite mobs that is worth taking if you already invested the points into Improved Demoralizing Shout.

Commanding Presence

Commanding Presence increases the effect of your Battle Shout and Commanding Shout.

Arms Tree Talents

Improved Heroic Strike

Improved Heroic Strike reduces the rage cost of your Heroic Strike ability by 1/2/3 rage. This talent will save you a lot of rage considering Heroic Strike is one of the most used abilities in the Protection Warrior's rotation. However, like Focused Rage and Puncture, it loses value with harder content.

Deflection

Deflection increases your parry chances by 5%. Avoidance from talents is not affected by diminishing returns..

Tactical Mastery

Tactical Mastery lets you retain up to an additional 15 rage when you change stances, for a total of 25 rage paired with the Stance Mastery passive. Conveniently, it's just the right amount of rage you need to use your Shattering Throw requiring Battle Stance to assist the raid during a burst phase, before going back to Defensive Stance.

Impale

Impale increases the critical strike damage bonus of your abilities by 20%, for a total of 220% critical damage. This talent pairs well with the many critical strike chance talents in the Protection tree. Impale only affects abilities (yellow attacks or "specials").

Deep Wounds

Deep Wounds inflicts a stacking bleed to any target you hit with a critical strike, dealing damage based on your melee weapon over 6 seconds. While it may not seem like much because tank weapons are generally fast and low damage, Deep Wounds is still a substantial damage and threat increase similar to Armored to the Teeth, Cruelty or Impale per point. Furthermore scales amazingly with AoE since it can proc on an unlimited number of targets with Thunder Clap.

The Glyph of Blocking in particular is an all-around excellent glyph that you will usually keep on in every situation for the great value in the additional stats it provides, both offensive and defensive. While it is the only glyph that increases your survivability per se, it is important to keep in mind that you can substitute threat-oriented gear with glyphs that increase your threat output to equip more mitigation-oriented gear instead.

Glyph of Blocking

Increases your block value by 10% for 10 sec after using your Shield Slam ability. All-around an amazing buff both for your threat and survival, with basically 100% uptime.

Glyph of Vigilance

Your Vigilance ability transfers an additional 5% of your target's threat to you. Very strong threat boost, should you need it.

Glyph of Devastate

Your Devastate ability now applies two stacks of Sunder Armor. It helps reach the maximum armor reduction faster, but more importantly doubles the innate threat value of Devastate, increasing your threat output by ~3%.

Rage management glyphs are especially useful during leveling and at low gear level, because they help you generate more rage to perform your rotation. Similar to rage management talents such as Focused Rage, they tend to lose value the harder the content because stronger bosses deal more damage to you and thus give you more rage.

Glyph of Revenge

After using Revenge, your next Heroic Strike costs no rage. Useful for more Heroic Strike usage while tanking a boss.

Glyph of Heroic Strike

You gain 10 rage when you critically strike with your Heroic Strike ability. Useful for more Heroic Strike usage while tanking a boss.

These glyphs can greatly increase your damage and threat in AoE situations but have no real benefit when tanking single-target bosses. Ideally, you would carry a few of them in your bags to swap in for dungeons or lots of trash mobs between two raid bosses, before going back to your default glyph(s). Or use them in an AoE-focused dual spec.

Glyph of Cleaving

Increases the number of targets your Cleave hits by 1. Especially useful in dungeons and leveling.

Glyph of Shockwave

Reduces the cooldown on Shockwave by 3 sec. Especially useful in dungeons and leveling.

Glyphs that reduce the cooldown of your defensive abilities can occasionally be a must-have for a handful of encounters. Depending on the timing of boss abilities and kill times, they can enable an extra usage to protect your from a boss mechanic, or be cycled through throughout a longer encounter in combination with other cooldowns provided by your raid.

Glyph of Sweeping Strikes

Reduces the rage cost of your Sweeping Strikes ability by 100%. Only for the Unrelenting Assault build.

Glyph of Shield Wall

Reduces the cooldown on Shield Wall by 2 min, but Shield Wall now only reduces damage taken by 40%. May have some niche usage paired with Improved Disciplines, but usually you will prefer the stronger baseline damage reduction.

Glyph of Last Stand

Reduces the cooldown of your Last Stand ability by 1 min.

The Glyph of Taunt is not mandatory for a Protection Warrior thanks to Vigilance. If your Taunt is resisted due to a lack of hit rating, you can use Mocking Blow and Challenging Shout as backup fixate effects during the cooldown of Taunt to try again. Or even better, anticipate the tank swap by moving Vigilance to the tank so your Taunt will be refreshed almost immediately and you can try again.

Glyph of Taunt

Increases the chance for your Taunt ability to succeed by 8%. Reduces the spell hit needed to never miss a Taunt from 17% (446 rating) to 9% (237 rating).

Minor Glyphs

Glyph of Shattering Throw

Makes Shattering Throw usable in all stances and removes the 1.5 seconds cast time.

Glyph of Thunder Clap

Increases the radius of your Thunder Clap ability by 2 yards. From 8 yards to 10 yards total, similar to Shockwave range.

Glyph of Charge

Increases the range of your Charge ability by 5 yards. 30 yards total.

Glyph of Battle or
Glyph of Command

Increases the duration of your Battle Shout or Commanding Shout by 2 min. Still a short buff but slightly less tedious.

Whilst the Unrelenting Assault Build you've put together is nice, it lacks a few tools and hamstrings dps/threat and hurts rage. Mortal Strike in any of these builds is pointless. The 30 Rage cost of Mortal Strike is too expensive. Cleave is your main rage dump ability with Heroic Strike coming a close second and based on situation. All of this is done with a fast weapon, essentially the faster the better, because you want more Cleaves or Heroic Strikes as fast as possible.

Glyph choice varies because of three main reasons. 1) Weapon being used 2) Role/Group makeup 3) How much crit you have.

If you are mostly main tanking on single mob and group pulls (so you know Revenge and Cleave is being mashed and you're fantically tab targetting between every target so Revenge and your Weapon Swing, which will be a Cleave to hit the most mobs possible) and youre using a Sword (ie Sword Spec) then the Major Glyphs listed below are perfectly fine.

The reason I like Improved Cleave with Glyph of Cleaving and Sword Spec is effectively a free additional hit somewhere every 6 second on a mob. Now i might be mistaken, however, ive done some fairly exhaustive testing on this and it seems that Improved Revenge (hitting 2 targets simultaneosly) and a Glyphed Cleave hitting 3 targets simultaneously and i have seen both Imp Revenge and Glyphed Cleave hit 2x every mob struck. Basically 4 hits on 2 mobs on a single Revenge or 6 hits on 3 mobs from a single Cleave. It seems the the Sword Spec proc happens prior to it hitting the actual target, so if your proc hits two targets or three targets, the proc applies to all targets hit.

However, if most of the time you are say Off Tanking and most of the pulls are single target and your use of cleave is low.
Then really you should be using an Axe or possibly a Mace with the appropriate specialization and choosing the major Glyphs as follows.

But essentially you want this particular spec with a lot of Crit Strike Chance with a base over 20%....the more the better. You want your Heroic Strike feeding free rage + the additional Rage from Unbridled Wrath, Anger Management and the +25% bump from Endless Rage. Because Revenge is less accessible to you as your main damage dealing ability optimising Heroic Strike is your rage dump, on every single swing you do has to be there. Effectively your base Crit (with Cruelty) say 20% plus Axes +5% plus Incite +15% = Heroic Strike crit chance about 40%. Meta Gems like Relentless Earthsiege Diamond or Chaotic Skyflare Diamond would be priority over more traditional tanking Meta gems like Austere Earthsiege Diamond. Any way of improving your overall CRIT and CRIT DAMAGE is preferable. So effectively having 5/5 Axes with Relentless Earthsiege Diamond you have a raw +8% Crit Damage.

Mortal Strike plays no part in any of these builds. With about a 1.5s swing timer on each swing thats 4 Heroic Strikes for every 1 Mortal Strike with a 40% crit chance on Heroic Strike and 10 Rage return for every crit vs a 25% crit chance Mortal Strike and no rage return. Heroic Strike wins hands down on total damage output.

I haven't seen any discussion about a talent build specifically for offtanking on Algalon progression taking advantage of Intervene cheesing. The build below takes 2/2 Safeguard for Intervene spam on the main tank (a paladin in my group) for a 20% uptime on 30% damage reduction,1/2 Improved Spell Reflection to help deal with some of the damage from spawned adds, and 2/2 Improved Disciplines and some glyph changes for cooldown reductions on Last Stand and Shield Wall to help with chaining cooldowns.
