Just did 25 shatters, got from 7-19 dusts(maybe double loot of 9+10, rest were 7-10) and 2-6 essences, with essences being more common.

56 essences and 87 dusts in 25 shatters, so average 2.24 essences and 3.48 dusts per shatter so far.

Hotfixed to be avaible in live servers.

Tried and and got 9 dust from 1 crystal.

Blizzard will hotfix this and buff the amount of mats you will get from this (soon) so those penny stretchers.. save some mats now.

Earlier today we made a post in our Service Status forum (linked below) noting that a hotfix was being applied that would yield more materials for enchanters when disenchanting or shattering items. For those of you who may be waiting for this hotfix to disenchant some leftover items, please note that the hotfix has been delayed. We still plan to push this hotfix in the near future and will inform the community when this happens.

5 Free skill-ups out of this thing, since you're going to either use the dusts/essences anyway or you can sell them for more than you got the crystals for. Really nice seeing as how there's usually stiff competition for skill-ups from customers.

BLIZZARD HAS CHANGED THE PROC-RATING ON THIS, SO THESE CALCULATIONS ARE OLD! (Now gives infinite dust more often)

The previous post was deleted, because my math was wrong.
I did a new testing, this time with 106 Abyss Crystals.

I received a total of;
287 Infinite dust
209 Greater cosmic essence

Of 106 shatters, i received dust 31 times. This means that you will get Infinite dust 32.86% of the time you shatter an Abyss crystal.
And of course, you will get Greater cosmic essence the rest of the time. (67.14% of the time)

This means, from an Abyssal shatter you will average get;
9.25 Infinite dust
OR
2.78 Greater cosmic essence.

The lowest amount of Infinite dust i received from one shatter was, 7 - the highest 19 (I would like to note, there is ALOT of times you will only get 7-8-9 dust's)
The lowest amount of Greater cosmic essence i received from one shatter was, 2 - The highest 6

Also, remember RNG. This was my testing, don't take it too serious.

This is probably the greatest thing they have done a long time. Shards are very easy to come by with the introduction of ToC. You can farm normal mode and come out with a lot of shards in no time. This really helps casual players or people trying to get the higher end enchants because of the ridiculous dust prices.

According to Blizzard, it will go live on all US Servers at the next maintenance. So Tuesday October, 6th. It is already live on the EU servers because their maintenance has already happened. So don't fret if you're looking at the enchanting trainer and he has nothing new for you like I did.

Quote from Blizzard Poster: "A new enchanting recipe was recently hotfixed to become available. This recipe is available through enchanting trainers. The reason why you may not currently be seeing this recipe is that it requires the server to be restarted to become active. We expect this to be live on all US realms no later than next Tuesday, October 6, as that is when the next scheduled maintenance is set to occur."

63x Greater Cosmic Essences
114x Infinite Dust

Between 2-3 essences or between 9-18 dust per shatter.

For a Blood Elf, this is an excellent way to level Enchanting to 450+. Because of the racial +10 bonus to Enchanting, a Blood Elf is considered to have a level 10 points higher for the purpose of learning new recipies.

However, when it comes time to use those recipes, the Blood Elf's skill is regarded as a normal level, without the bonus.

This means that a Blood Elf effectively learns recipes "10 points early". Not only that, but it also means that recipes change color 10 points later.

Long story short, for a Blood Elf, this recipe stays orange all the way through 455, making it the quickest, easiest, and cheapest way to grab those final skill points.

I'm sorry, but I had to clean up your formula to combine the constants. Here's a re-written form of it:

== ( * 37/12 ) + ( * 11/6 )

Right now on Stonemaul/US Horde, Infinite Dust is going for about 2g and Greater Cosmic Essence for about 20g. So if Abyss Crystals are less than (2 * 37/12) + (20 * 11/6) ~= 43g, they'd be worth shattering.

Since the new year I've started shattering Abyss Crystals as their price has dropped to an average 35g while Greater Cosmic Essences and Infinite Dust are 17.9 and 1.9g each respectively (Azuremyst-EU). Since the rate of Infinite Dust and Greater Cosmic Essences has changed since the previous figures on here was recorded (in favour of Infinite Dust) I've been recording all the results of my shatters and I intend to update the results on here as they change.

From 391 Abyss Crystals (14/Jan/10 - 06/Apr/10) I received:

1787 x Infinite Dust
761 x Greater Cosmic Essences

Therfore on average for each Abyssal Shatter I have received:

4.57 x Infinite Dust
and
1.95 x Greater Cosmic Essences

= 4.57 * 1.9g + 1.95 * 17.9g = 43.52g worth of materials.

Hence by subtracting the original 35g spent on the Abyss (usually less) I am currently gaining atleast 8.52g in material value for each Abyss Crystal I shatter. That's close over 3K saved since I started (based on the lower profits at the start).

For everyone else since the hotfix Abyssal Shatter becomes profitable (empirically) when:
< 4.57 * + 1.95 *

I will try and update this as I have more numbers but bear in mind these are just my results and will never be perfect.

it does not matter if you substract AH fees or not.

The AH fee does matter if you are buying the mats from the AH for this sole purpose. (Note that he did say "Assuming you're reselling the mats you get from shattering on the AH" so it is the case.)
If you buy 3000g worth of crystals from the AH to resell them as crystals for 3100g, you are losing money, so the AH cut matters.
If you buy 3000g worth of crystals from the AH to shatter and resell, by the same token, the AH cut matters.

Of course if you get the crystals from drops, no it doesn't matter because yes you'd have to pay it either way. But elgustav did not seem to be referring to that case.

With a smaller sample size (only 50 abyss so far) I've received similar numbers to yours.

On average I received 4.94 infinite dust and 1.58 Greater cosmic essences.

Combing my sample with yours to increase the sample size gets the following:

979 + 247 = 1226 Infinite Dust
369 +79 = 448 Greater Cosmic Essences

Combined Total Number of Shatters: 208+50 =258

Therefor the updated average for each abyss shatter:

4.75 Infinite Dust
1.73 greater Cosmic Essences

My intuition tells me that as the sample size increases we will see the actual probability approach 4.75 infinite dust and 1.75 greater cosmic essence because people generally go with cleaner numbers when choosing probabilities. I could be wrong though.

Today, I shattered 146 crystals. Here's the outcome:

777 infinite dust -> 5.32 per crystal
and
187 cosmic essence -> 1.28 per crystal

As the essences and crystals are very expensive on my server, I'm either very unlucky or numbers have changed (compare to elgustav's and Random6's posts). I'm going to continue to write down numbers and posting here if time allows it.

well, i just tried abyssal shattered 10 abyss crystal just today after seeing this page, it's not accurate because i only used 10 crystals, what can i say lol? i'm poor :P too bad so sad.
so i got 36 Infinite dusts and 26 greater cosmic essences from 10 abyss crystals.
my realm is Silver hands and the cosmic essences on AH now is about 15.76g each and infinite dusts are 1.22g each. and Abyss crystal at 44g each.
so the math starts with my tiny brain.
44x10=440g thats the price of abyss crystal.
36x1.22=43.92g thats the price of the infinite dusts.
26x15.76=409.76g thats the price of greater cosmic essences
So you will make 440g if u sell the abyss crystals and make 453.68g if you shatter them.
which is not really much differents and you can't really compare it with different realms and i havent even subtract the AH fees because i forgot how much % it was.
But i wouldnt risk shattering them anymore.

Easily the best way to get enchanting from 445 to 450. I did that today and it not only saved me a ton of gold and trade spam, but i got enough mats to make scrolls for useful enchants.

Abyssal Shatter was implemented onto Live Servers 10/1/09.

Can be trained by Grand Master Enchanting Trainers at 445 skill.

US servers will not see this on their trainers until their realm has been restarted for the hotfix to apply.
