"Necrosis Rank 5
Your normal weapon swings deal an additional 25% Shadow damage."
This talent seems vastly overpowered to me. If it works as advertised, every white hit will automatically add 25% extra shadow damage on the target, this is an extremely large passive increase to damage and it scales well too, its great, but it screams nerf in its current state!
Its now been toned down to 10% dmg which is a much more reasonable amount and still a very nice increase in damage.
I believe (dont take this as fact) that its like seal of righteousness in that it does not crit, but it doesnt miss either (as long as your autoattack hits, it will proc)

Some one please correct me if im wrong here but if this stays is it going to be something like: Say your melee swing hits for 1000 white damage and then there is going to be a 250 yellow shadow element damage after it?

It might work like:
Melee Damage - Armor Mitigation = White Damage
and then
White Damage + 25% Melee Damage = Final Damage
So using numbers:
1000 - 30% = 700
and then
700 + 250 = 950
I could be wrong and it could be 25% of the white damage(making the final damage 875 damage).
Alternate way:
Melee Damage - Armor Mitigation = White Damage
and then
White Damage + 25% White Damage = Final Damage
So using numbers:
1000 - 30% = 700
and then
700 + 175 = 875
So this doesn't seem too op, it seems a little op but it isnt a HUGE damage boost.

I'm kind of reading this as a Death Knight's version of Seal of Blood. Just with 25% instead of 35%. And passive. And a talent. With no judgement and vastly more shadow damage multipliers compared to holy damage multipliers.
So I would go with:
1000 * bonuses (blood frenzy * bloody vengeance * blood gorged * 2h spec = 1.368 ) = 1368 / (mitigation) = 1052
1368 * 0.25 = 342 * bonuses (bloody vengeance * blood gorged * shadow weaving * misery * curse of elements * improved shadow bolt = 1.848%) = 632
= 1684 per swing. / 3.8 speed = 443 dps for normal melee attacks before crits. It'd be $%^& of it could crit like Seal of Blood.
1514 if you go conservative and assume its 25% of 1000.

Interesting "bug" I'm starting to notice. Seems like Necrosis hits (and Blood-caked Blade hits, for that matter) are giving weapon skill.
Currently leveling my Two-handed Mace skill in RFC, and every swing is giving me two, sometimes three points of weapon skill. I don't know if this is intentional or not, but I gotta say, I like it. Makes getting these skill points alot easier. I've gone from 1 to 218 and I just cleared the trogg room.

Is the damage caused by this based on the unmitigated or mitigated damage?
Example:
Auto attack would hit for 100 on a target with 0 armor
Against a target with 50% reduction, it would hit for 50 damage. Would necrosis hit for 10 damage or 5 damage?

Getting buffed in an upcoming patch according to MMO champion, going from 10% to 20%. I'd be interested to see how Necrosis performs with this buff, and if it's worth the 5 points.

Necrosis deals damage based on your damage after factoring in the target's armor.
For example:
Target has 50% damage reduction.
You hit for 100, but deal 50 damage. Necrosis does 5 damage, not 10 damage.
If you crit, Necrosis does 10% of your crit damage.
Crit for 200, deals 100 damage, Necrosis does 10 damage.
If your white damage is 25% of your total damage, Necrosis will be around 2.5% of your total damage, which is just 0.5% increase per point. Next patch Necrosis damage is being doubled, so it will be roughly a 1% increase in damage per point.
It's far from great, but it's not bad.

My observations about this highly curious ability so far are:
- after a melee hit, Necrosis is applied seperatly
- it is affected by Ebon Plaguebringer
- it is affected by Rage of Rivendare
- both talents increase it's effect by 23% neto
- It's school is physical, so it counts as a physical hit doing shadow damage.
- it is applied when you do a Rune Strike and for the damage your Rune Strike did.
- does not crit
Currently versus single targets, this talent is roughly 3.6% of my total damage done, this will be doubled coming patch. It's effect is further increased by things such as
Improved Shadow Bolt
, scales alongside your Rune Strike, and most interesting, it nearly doubles your attack count, implying, it nearly doubles the proc-rate of things like
Rune of the Fallen Crusader
, and that you'll get your weaponskill twice as fast. When you put this talent to propper use, it seems to be worth quite a bit.

as a unholy death knight i checked this talent during a 10man naxx run i tanked.
as an unholy dk, i do as much aoe as possiple.
necrosis was (acording to recount) 1.7% of my overall dmg during that run.
hardly worth the points. i was wielding a 2handed weapon (titansteel 2handed mace - cant remember the name, they all sound alike)
the buff might make it better.
should be imba for dual wielders though

Okay. I've tested it out, and it seems fairly bugged as it starts to hit for 50ish shadow dmg and drops down to a single 1 shadow dmg per weapon hit, is this a bug or what. It seems like the dmg goes down when I use my plaguestrike( i am 0/32/39specc) and get the desecration buff.. anyone know more about this?
idc bout downrates, just want a answer.

I say in my own opinion with your auto attacks being prime (meaning that is your only form of MELEE attacks other than the spells you have) you are more likely to do more damage from your spells and stuff than your melee but still is a descent pick up. <Recommended> all 5 points

1- Necrosis(20%) work good for main hand (auto attack)
2- Necrosis(20%) DONT WORK WHITH OFF HAND (auto attack) with all weapon i tested whith never get necrosis dmg....

My WWS reports tend to show that Necrosis deals around 26% of my swing damage. I'm not sure exacly to what this is due, maybe things like Ebon Plaguebringer, but it is still a major difference from what the tooltip says.
Other than that, this is one of the very best talent point investments you get for DPS. For 5 points it increases DPS by around 7%.
Edit: After extensive testing I can also confirm that this does not work with off-hand attacks if you are Dual Wielding. Only mainhand.

Titansteel Destroyer
and mostly T7.5 gear, I saw about this much as well. You'll get even more of a contribution from unholy presence which is great for PvP but an overall DPS loss. Clearly a better choice over
Desecration
, which is situational and doesn't synergize as well with
Epidemic
and
Glyph of Scourge Strike
.
After extensive raid testing since the change (and after I noticed it... doh), I have verified this over and over with different specs.

because I tend to have enough RP with the 4-piece T7 set bonus, so YMMV.
As it has been mentioned, don't test this ability on dummies, because it does not cause overkill and they only have 1 health. That was my mistake that caused me to spec out of it after I first hit 80.

With blood presence, you deal 15% more dmg with attacks (+3% necrosis dmg), but, does necrosis also get the blood presence buff (Aka another +3% dmg = 26% dmg)?

Looks like the fix for necrosis double-dipping doesn't work quite right.
Necrosis now hits for exactly 20% of white damage, regardless of points in Black Ice or having Ebon Plague on the target. Bonus shadow damage debuffs/talents never double dipped on necrosis, since they did not affect the autoattack that procs the necrosis, only the end result.

A simple answer is all I want to know, does Necrosis improve your DPS overall? I want to simply know if Necrosis, adds to your overall DPS output and also, if Necrosis can be used regardless of your weapon being fast or slow. Someone just give me an answer that I can understand please?

Just read today (GMT+8 1900hrs 20th January 2010) that Rune Strike now doesn't proc Necrosis anymore, gonna test it out later when I can
Earliest report of this was a post on EU forums dated 17th January 2010
If this change is/was intentional I'm speccing out of it for my Blood Tank

Right now, auto-attack is about 17% of my dps with a few talents.
Necrosis adds 4% of 17% per point, which comes to about 0.7% extra dps per point in this talent.
With
Black Ice
5/5 this is increased by 10%, which will add an extra 0.07% per point in this talent.
Of course I'm still using
Troll Butcherer
and since this talent is directly related to your weapon's dps, I'm sure it'll add up quite a bit once I get something decent... but then again, all of my other skills will be doing more damage as well, so the %dps per point should remain about the same.
With talents that do nothing but increase dps, it's important to take note of how much extra dps you're getting per-point (recount ftw) and how the talent's effects can be further increased.

Whenever I spec for Necrosis to 5, I always see 1 point of yellow damage each time I strike, and on my recount, it always says that the one damage always come from Necrosis, I'm really starting to see Necrosis as a pointless talent.
