Used in the new profession, Inscription to create inks which are then added to parchment and used to 'inscribe' skills/spells.

With TBC we had Prospecting, now in WoTLK we have Milling. These are essentially the same spells - 5 x go in, y comes out. Hopefully blizzard don't make the same mistake as they did with Prospecting (They only later made it 100% chance to give gems).

What I want to know is if any 5 herbs can be crushed because so far in the Wowhead database only a few herbs show up as requiring inscription such as
peacebloom
,
purple lotus
and
golden sansam
.

"I guess it makes the lower end of Ins easier to level (herbs directly into ink rather than 5 into 1 pommace) whereas the further you dive into the prof the more herbs you require, it should also keep the market for peacebloom and silver leaf booming if they are required for use later on in the prof."
I hope that Inscription stays closer to JC and not engineering... main reason I don't have a high lvl engineer is because I hate that engineering requires you to make and item to make an item to make an item to make an item (which by the way are all grey so no skill points) and another tree of another 3 making something to make something... just to get 1 single item after having to spend so much time figuring out all the mats you need because of having to make things to make things.
JC was ok, it was fairly straight forward and it wasn't like you had to procepect a prospect of a prospect or use copper wire to make something to make some thorium item... Alot of ores to get teh mats you need to make the item, but not because its really alot but because prospecting you didnt always get the gem that you wanted.

Take a look at this website:

Contains all the info that us, non-Blizzard employee's know about Inscription.
What kind of herbs, and the known glyphs.

As of beta build 8885, milling like others said, takes five of a herb and mills into pigments. All of the pigments I've made except for dusky make 2-3 pigments per 5 herbs. Dusky pigment has made 3-4 pigments per 5 herbs in my testing.
In addition to the 2-3 pigments that you always get, there's a chance you'll get an uncommon pigment as well. From my testing, the chance of getting an uncommon pigment is 40-50% every time you mill. 95+% of the time when you get an uncommon pigment, you get one. On very rare occasions I've gotten two or three uncommons on one proc.
Uncommon pigments I've discovered: listing the normal pigment first, and the uncommon after:
Alabaster pigment - No uncommon pigment
Dusky pigment - Verdent pigment
Golden pigment - Burnt pigment
Emerald pigment - Indigo pigment
Violet pigment - Ruby pigment
Silvery pigment - Sapphire pigment
Nether pigment - Ebon pigment
Specialty inks (like hunter's ink or royal ink) use the uncommon pigments from what I've seen in the beta. The major glyphs in the beta don't use the specialty inks, so I'm guessing they're for the other patterns that will be implemented in the future like stat scrolls, cards that make decks, rune word temporary buffs, etc.

The distribution of pigments was changed in beta build 8905. At skill level 75+ you have a 75% chance of getting the common pigment or a 25% of getting the uncommon pigment in it's place. There's also a small chance of getting a bonus rare item as well. Those numbers are based on my test milling.
Examples:
Verdent Pigment 75% vs Golden Pigment 25% with a rare drop of Nightbloom Lilac
Emerald Pigment 75% vs Indigo Pigment 25% with a rare drop of Locust Wing
Violet Pigment 75% vs Ruby Pigment 25% with a rare drop of Firefly Dust

I could be mistaken, but the previous release, I swear sometimes I got 1 or even 4 dusts from a single mill. I remember one time I got a super hit - 4 common and 3 rare! That was awesome.

Three words:
Buy herbs now.

Milling now seems stable in beta/ptr and is a level 1 ("initial") skill. It is the ONLY source of pigments for a scribe's inks (other than the Auction House, of course).
Herbs are now "grouped", for Milling purposes. The first group, for example, includes Peacebloom, Silverleaf and Earthroot. You can mill any of the herbs in a group and expect the same type of pigments to result.
Milling a stack of 5 herbs will give you 2-3 common pigments, for the lower herbs in a group, and 2-4 for the more valuable herbs in the group. In addition, the chance of uncommon (green label) pigments (1-3) will also tend to increase with the better herbs.
(note: the exceptional milling drops, such as Locust Wing, have not been seen for weeks, so we can assume they're gone for good)

Something I am confused about the grouping is, if you have not five of one herb but a couple of others in the group will it Mill all those combined or no?
For example, if you have 2 Briarthorn and 3 Swiftthistle and you try to mill one of them will it consume the Briarthorn and Swiftthisle or will it just fail to mill?

I just started Inscription today, and already milling herbs is annoying. So I simply made the best macro ever... okay, not really, but it's still awesome.
/cast Milling
/use <herb>
<herb> can be anyone herb that you need milling, for example "/use silverleaf"
Just make sure to remove the "<>"

ok i am not an inscriptionist and keep getting this constrictor grass. I cant Mill and had to come here to look it up. Since as an herbalist I can't do anything with this grass, any suggestions? Is it sellable or should I just vendor it?

I think higher level inscription makes it so that you have higher chance of getting Icy pigment, can anybody confirm?
When i was at 400 inscription and milled icethorn/adder's tongue/ lichblooms, i only got few icy pigments.
When i got to 436 inscritpion, i realized i was getting more icypigments than before.
It could just be me or does lvl of inscription have anything do with gaining rare pigments?

Do all herbs in the same group give the same average amount of pigment when milled? I was wondering since some herbs are far more rare and expensive than others

Is your milling skill based on your Inscription skill level or you Herb picking skill level? I am picking herbs that i can't mill and i also have inks that i can't make because i can't mill the herbs thats i need to get the pigments from to make the ink.

This seems to be a rather good money-maker at the moment.
On my server, a stack of lower level Northrend herb goes for around 25g per stack. Milling one stack, at its worst, gives 8 Azure Pigments which is 4 ink of the sea. The ink goes for around 4g each, so if your luck is bad, you will end up losing gold.
However, on average, you will be able to 1 Icy Pigment per milling (25% chance, as someone stated above; some herbs have even higher rate of producing icy pigments), which is half of a snowfall ink. Given the exchange rate of 1:10 at Dalaran Inscription Vendor, Snowfall ink goes for around 40g (usually 3-5 gold more), which means that pigment itself is 20g. So if your luck is not that bad, milling a stack will net you at least 11g on average, provided that the inks sell well, which they do due to the popularity of the nobles deck.
The last 8 stacks of herbs I milled produced 80 azure pigments (10 pigment per stack) and 10 icy pigments (1.25 pigment per stack) which gives roughly 45g in return, giving 20g net profit. This isn't as profitable as prospecting before, but a 80% profit isn't something to sneer at either.
Update:
Just milled 4 stacks of Adder's Tongue, which had a better rate of giving Pigments. Bought at 26g per stack (Usually goes around 25-30g), 4 stacks produced:
- 52 Azure Pigments, average of 13/stack
- 11 Icy Pigments, average of 2.75/stack
which gives a total of 81g worth of mats, netting a total of 55g profit.

Is probability of getting rare pigment the same all the time or it depends on something, like your location or time of the day?
Sometimes it seems to me that it does, but it might be just a chance, as I do not keep history of milling outcomes.
Last time I got 3 icy pigments from 8 stacks (32 millings) of Tiger Lily, other time I got 10+ from 6 stacks of the same herb. Similar with other herbs and it looks like I get different numbers in different parts of the day. Again, it might be just impression, as there does not have to be such mechanics in the game.

Deadnettle 100 2.45 0.24
Fire Leaf 27 2.67 0.44
Fire Seed 0 0.00 0.00
Goldclover 255 2.54 0.20
Talandra's Rose 28 2.36 0.21

Adder's Tongue 1473 2.98 0.52
Icethorn 852 2.97 0.53
Lichbloom 540 3.03 0.51
I will update this as i mill more herbs. Any results with less than 100 millings should not be considered accurate. They are added here for completeness
