I came across some type of bug while prospecting Mithril ore. I was able to prospect the ore no matter how large the stack, so long as there were at least 5 for the longest time. Then all of the sudden I couldn't get the prospecting to work with a stack of 12 mithril ore. It wouldn't give me an error or anything. The loot window simply wouldn't come up and the ore was not destroyed. I found that if I broke the larger stack down to stacks of 5, it would work correctly again. Hope this helps anyone that may be stuck.

Prospecting is one of the best and easiest ways to make gold, depending on your servers economy.

Simply hit 350 Jewelcrafting, get a few "in demand" gems, and buy up all the Adamantite Ore you can find. Do not buy recipes for gems that aren't good for a class, eg don't buy recipes for gems like + to spirit...
Undercut everyone. Learn what your gem prices are, and what you need to sell at in order to profit.

Here's an average day's (this morning, actually) run from prospecting for me.

Purchased:

As for patch 2.4.1 prospecting adamantite ore seems to be totally nerfed.. Superior quality gems are VERY rare now. And getting more than 1 superior gem is good luck.
off top: If u playing a rogue dont forget to pickpocket mobs, droprate of rare gem is more than from prospecting, lol.

Prices of blue gems have been going down since the epic gem vendor is out on most servers so that might effect if you want to prospect or not.

For those of you who get annoyed by having to search your bags for a stack, this macro should help:
Replace "Adamantite Ore" with whatever you're prospecting:

This will not only help you keep track of how many you have (if you're mining the ore, for example) but it will also let you "prospect the macro" (just be sure to keep (if you have one) the stack which won't divide into 5 in a later bag slot than the other ore or it won't work)

Sometimes a stack of ore won't have any gems in it. If it's a stack of more than 5, just breaking it into stacks of 5 or less will usually let you get gems out of it. Also, you can find a single ore to add to the stack, and you have a chance of the stack having gems in it.

I not confirmed this but just prospected few stack of saronite ore and only 1 blue gem droped.
Dont known if they lowered chance for blue gems or im unlucky with drop.

I haven't seen anyone yet mention this, but very soon (next patch) you will be able to prospect Titanium Ore and it gives a chance to loot epic quality gems. This is the first time you can propect uncommon (green) ore. I suspect that you will get a greater yield of rare/superior (blue) gems as well. I have noticed the price of titanium ore SKYROCKET on my server to about 20g per ore. When everyone who is selling just the bars realizes what you can do with the ore I am sure the price of bars will go up as well as barely anyone will be making just the bars, with the exception of alchemists who transmute 8 saronite bars >>1 titanium bar.

Taken from warcraftecon.com:

They prospected 141 stacks of or 564 total prospects and their results were:

* Epic Gems: 130
* Rare Gems: 148
* Uncommon: 846
* Powder: 417

Chance per stack of ore:

* Epic: .92
* Rare: 1.05
* Uncommon: 6.00
* Powder: 2.95

So we can basicly assume that from one stack of Titanium ore you get on average 1 epic gem, 1 rare (blue) gem, 6 uncommon (green) gems and three Titanium Powders which will be used for new 3.2 repeatable quest where for 10 powders you will be rewarded with 1 Dalaran Jewelcrafter's Token and some gold.

Just to offer some numbers and info (to those, who like me, were wondering about saronite)

11 Stacks of Saronite (Skill: 400 Prospecting) yielded...

49 Green Gems in the form of
- 13 Shadow Crystal
- 10 Huge Citrine
- 8 Dark Jade
- 7 Chalcedony
- 6 Sun Crystal
- 5 Bloodstone

10 Blue Gems in the form of
- 3 Sky Sapphire
- 2 Scarlet Ruby
- 2 Monarch Topaz
- 1 Autumn's Glow
- 1 Forest Emerald
- 1 Twilight Opal

There seems to be a trend with 1 Rare per stack and 3-5 uncommons per stack.

man, I got my jc to 64 and got stuck because I didn't know you could prospect this stuff, forgot you need a stack of 5, which kinda sucks but I'm sure with this info my lvl 22 can sweep up some copper fast and if not I'm buying it

Occasionally there's a "glitch" where you prospect a stack of ore and you won't get anything (even though you have at least 5).

If this happens, split the stack and recombine it; that usually "fixes" the stack so you can get your gems.

I prospected 30 stacks of saronite, which I had bought for 360g total, for 12g a stack.

With Gorefiend ah prices (rounded down), checked at 2:30 PM/Wed, I received:

7 Twilight opal - 6g each
5 Sky Sapphire - 6g each
5 Forest Emeralds - 4g each
5 Autumn Glow - 8g each
10 Monarch Topaz - 5g each
4 Scarlet Rubies - 45g each

Of Lesser gems I found:

24 Dark Jade - 5g each
23 Chalcdony - 7g each
19 Huge Citrine - 1.5g each
17 Sun Crystal 1.25g each
23 Shadow Crystal 1.25g each
27 Bloodstone - 1.5g each

That all amounts to 372g for blue epic gems, 400g even for green gems, for a
GRAND TOTAL of 772g, retail value.

Prices can and do shift, but this is a good value indicator for the gems on Gorefiend.

So, 12g a stack for saronite is a pretty good deal.

Not so. You can have an alt to mine the stones for you, or just buy the materials yourself. Currently im going with goblin engineering (used to be gnomeish, but i retrained after i got the deathray) and jewlcrafting. Helps loads in pvp

So to prospect we wont need to travel to the location of any of the nodes..? we will just prospect on already mined ore....or even ore we buy off the AH ?

Makes a diff for me.as I h ae one toon that Iplay a lot more than the other... so stay in town toon can do JC.. If I needed to prospect AT the node..I would need to have JC on my more active toon.

Was prospecting a few batches of mithril. I don't know exactly how many I did but probably 12 or more. I had a stack of Mithril ore 10 deep and attempted to prospect. The animation and sound emote happened but no window popped up (not even an empty one)at the end. Several repeated attempts, juggling the ore around, prospecting other types of ore (worked fine), etc...

Anyone know if there is a daily/hourly limit to how many prospects you can conduct on one ore?

I will check again tomorrow. If it changes, i will update this post.

When your Jewelcrafting skill is high enough, the word "Prospectable" on a type of ore will go from red to white. When you prospect ore, you will get powder of the corresponding ore type (ie. Iron Ore produces Iron Powder). In addition, you will get 0-2 gems. It may be possible to get 3, but I haven't seen it happen. You can get 2 different or 2 of the same gem from one stack of 5 ore. The type of gems you get generally correspond with the level of the ore (ie. Mithril will get you Citrine, Star Ruby and/or Aquamarine). There is also a chance that you'll recieve a gem from a higher or lower tier of ore. Like a Star Ruby in Thorium or a Large Opal in Mithril. Silver, Gold, Truesilver and Dark Iron cannot be prospected.

Has anyone found that they tend to get more gems from prospecting, or that they tend to get zero a smaller portion of the time with a higher skill level?

It seems when I'm first able to prospect an ore that I get nothing from it a large portion of the time.

Basics:
At level 5 or higher, with a jewelcrafting of 20 or higher, you can learn prospecting from a jewelcrafting trainer, it's in your general tab in the spellbook.

Click on the skill and select a stack of 5 or more standard non-precious ore(listed below) and you'll attempt to prospect it if your skill is high enough. When you have the prospecting skill, you'll see "Prospecting" on ores, if it's red it means your skill is too low, if it says "Not prospectable" that ore type can't be prospected.

You get 0-3 gems and 1 "Powder" of the ore type(Copper yields copper powder, thorium yields thorium powder, etc). This powder is vendor trash, except for the adamantite powder, which is used in high level jewelcrafting to make mercurial adamantite, a high level jewelcrafting reagent.

The ores:
This will be a list of the ore, the skill level required and the gem types you can salvage from it from most to least common.

Copper(20): Tigerseye, Malachite, Shadowgem

Tin(50): Shadowgem, Lesser Moonstone, Moss Agate

Iron(125): Citrine, Jade, Lesser Moonstone

Mithril(175): Citrine, Aquamarine, Star Ruby, Huge Emerald, Blue Sapphire, Large Opal, Azerothian Diamond

Thorium(250): Star Ruby, Large Opal, Azerothian Diamond, Huge Emerald, Blue Sapphire, Flame Spessarite, Blood Garnet, Shadow Draenite, Golden Draenite, Azure Moonstone (No instance of Arcane Crystal has been recorded to my knowledge)

Fel Iron(275): (Droprates uncertain) Deep Peridot, Golden Draenite, Flame Spessarite, Azure Moonstone, Blood Garnet, Shadow Draenite, Nightseye

Adamantite(350): (Droprates uncertain) Deep Peridot, Golden Draenite, Flame Spessarite, Azure Moonstone, Blood Garnet, Shadow Draenite, Noble Topaz

functions just like Disenchanting things...your sacraficing another object for another object, only difference is if you need ore you can just go out and get it where with disenchanting you're dependant on uncommon drops to fall into your lap. Not to mention you have a chance of mining all the gems you prospect when you mine the nodes. All in all I think it has better functionality then disenchanting.

Prospecting is, by far, the easiest way to get gemstones. If you're looking to skill up jewelcrafting, it can help immensely, especially in the thorium level where there's 4 fairly rare types of gems you need and you end up with a huge surplus of thorium and not enough gems to use it all. Earlier on, though, it is much less useful for this.

Not skilling up on disenchanting & prospecting is an easily debatable topic, and I'm not really sold on either way. Apathetic, as it were.

As for potentially wasting 5 ore(which doesn't feel like much to me, but I've got 4 miners): You always get dust, at least, which may be just a few silver, but it isn't a total waste. I'm not really fond of the chance to burn it for dust alone either, but it's for sure a useful ability.

For making money at lower levels? Not really. Higher levels? Possibly. End game? Definitely.

All in all, I'd much rather have the option to burn ore for gems, even with the possible waste factor, than not have the option at all.

Purely my opinion, of course.

Does your level of jewel crafting impact the chance at blue gems? I'm level 361 and prospected 10 stacks of fel iron ore, and got 1 glue gem...

Prospecting ore is probably the only money making skill for jewelcrafters. It is because this that the adamantite ores are worth about 20g+ per stack on my server. From my experience there is usually 1 blue gem from 1 stack of adamantite ore. 1 blue gem sells for about 25 - 40g depending on which one. I had one stack of adamantite ore prospected yesterday and got 3 blue gems. so that's worth about 100g per stack of adamantite ore. There are usually about 3-5 green gems to go with 4 adamantite powder which also worth about 10g+. As for prospecting thorium ore or fel iron ores I do not recommand. Thorium bars sell for about 35g per stack on my server now, and the gems u get are not worth much compared to thorium bar, so u will lose money. Fel iron ores simply does not yield much gems at all. I have not tried eternium ores though.

Hey, with engineering getting the new headpieces, and plus all the other items like scopes, I imagine prices will go up on blue gems, and possibly green ones. That makes prospecting worth even more. And, as an engineer myself, people need to put up some more green gems for all the rare and funny things engineers can make.

I've probably gone through 200 stacks of Mithril Ore, and I've never seen a Huge Emerald from it. Are you sure that provides them? I have received Huge Emeralds from higher level ore.

How do u tell if an ore is prospectable or not when ur nt a JC? well simple any ore that dont have a green name or u dont need for a quest (i.e. dark iron ore) is prospectable. when u prospect u have a ramdom chance gettin a certain type of gem from the ore but only certain types of gem come from certain type of ore.

Theese numbers are kinda nice, accually a profit of almost 100%.

Although the amoutn of gems i produced will affect the market prices and proberly lower the avg. cost. at the same time i can choose to cut some of theese gems ( blue gems ) to different gems that are very highly priced on AH. so im counting with 2400g profit, i cna come back with resaults after selling the gems on AH

Just putting some data out there about prospecting Saronite Ore in Wrath Classic.

After prospecting 50,000 ore for a total of 10,000 prospects, these were the results:

Green Gems

Dark Jade x 1879
Sun Crystal x 1873
Bloodstone x 1800
Chalcedony x 1784
Huge Citrine x 1832
Shadow Crystal x 1815

Blue Gems

Taking the average of these gives the expected rate of green gems as 18.3% and the expected rate of blue gems as 4.17%. Given the rates listed elsewhere online from back in the days of original Wrath, I think it's safe to say I got slightly lucky and the actual expected rates for green and blue gems are 18% and 4%, respectively.

Just figured I'd share since there's been no confirmation that the rates haven't changed from original Wrath and the sample size of my data is rather large.

Also, in case anyone was doing the Saronite Shuffle, I developed a formula for determining the breakeven price of Saronite Ore at which obtaining ore for any cheaper will result in a profit (assuming you do it the same way that I do it, which I've outlined below):
