Welcome to Wowhead's Rotation, Cooldowns, and Abilities Guide for Feral Druid Tank in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. This guide will provide a list of recommended spell rotations to maximize your effectiveness in raids and dungeons, as well as list your most important cooldowns.
Best PvE Rotation for Feral Druid Tank in Wrath of the Lich King
When playing a bear tanking role, the three primary responsibilities of a Feral Druid are: (1) holding aggro on trash mobs and raid bosses, (2) consistently surviving the damage dealt by these mobs, and (3) maximizing your personal DPS in

when not actively tanking. Since bears do not possess any active mitigation abilities like

or

, the PvE tanking rotation is aimed entirely at (1), with (2) addressed primarily with gear and defensive cooldowns. Just as in TBC, the TPS rotation for bears is quite simple and easy to pick up for new players, making Feral arguably the most accessible tanking spec in WotLK. However, the multitude of offensive and defensive cooldowns available to Feral tanks in WotLK still provides a lot of room for skill expression and personal improvement.
Feral Druid Tank Single Target Rotation
The WotLK single target rotation for Feral tanks is very similar to the TBC rotation, comprising a simple priority ordering of how to spend your available Rage. There are just two notable differences arising from WotLK tuning changes:

now deals considerable damage and generates significant bonus Threat when cast in

, turning it into a staple tanking ability that should be cast on cooldown in the single target rotation.
重殴
has been massively buffed in WotLK, so much so that it overtakes
横扫(熊)
in priority when your incoming Rage is limited.
Additionally, due to the new
狂暴
cooldown, you will spend the first 15 seconds of every boss pull simply spamming
裂伤(熊)
in order to generate a significant snap Threat lead before reverting to the standard rotation.
The single target rotation can be described as follows:
Cast
狂暴
and

immediately at the start of each pull.

as often as possible, which is every 1.5 seconds during
狂暴
and every 4.5 seconds afterwards (or every 6 seconds if

is not talented).

until 5 stacks of the bleed are applied.

It is important to manage your Rage carefully when executing this rotation. Do not cast Maul unless you can guarantee 15 available Rage when Mangle comes off cooldown or when Lacerate needs to be refreshed. Likewise, do not cast Swipe unless you will still have enough Rage remaining to Maul on the next melee swing. On the flip side, when plenty of Rage is available, make sure to Maul/Swipe frequently enough to dump the excess Rage so that you do not Rage cap and lose potential TPS.
Note that the reapplication of Lacerate should be done at least once every 12 seconds, so that there is at least one tick of the DoT remaining and it does not fall off. More frequent casts reduce the risk of the bleed falling off in case of misses/dodges/parries, but at the expense of reduced Swipe uptime.
Feral Druid Tank AoE Rotation
When tanking four or more targets,

becomes the Druid's primary Threat generator, providing more total Threat across all targets than even
裂伤(熊)
. Furthermore, since AoE targets typically die very quickly, it is not worth keeping up

stacks on multiple mobs. This makes the AoE Threat rotation very simple:

Cooldowns for Feral Druid Tank in Wrath of the Lich King
WotLK marks the first time that Feral Druids have real cooldowns at their disposal aside from on-use activated trinkets and consumables, and effective use of these cooldowns will have a significant impact on a bear tank's snap Threat generation and survivability.
Offensive Cooldowns
The first class of cooldown abilities to consider are the
offensive cooldowns
狂暴
and
激怒
, which are best used at the very start of a pull just before you are in melee range of your target(s):
狂暴
causes
裂伤(熊)
to have no cooldown and to hit up to 3 targets. Since
裂伤(熊)
contributes the highest Threat Per Rage (TPR) of all
巨熊形态
abilities, this cooldown will allow you to rapidly generate a sizable Threat lead over all DPS players in your raid group by spamming Mangle and Maul continuously right on pull.
激怒
instantly generates 20 Rage, and also boosts all damage done in
巨熊形态
by 15% for 10 seconds when talented with
丛林之王
. As such, it synergizes extremely well with
狂暴
for snap Threat by causing your initial Mangle spam to generate even
more
TPS. Unlike
狂暴
, however,

comes with a significant downside of nerfing your armor when it is active. Current calculations indicate that you should expect to take around 14% more damage with
激怒
active, so this cooldown should exclusively be used for initial burst Threat and never during the middle of a boss fight, since your Threat lead should already be enormous by the time it comes off cooldown for the first time. A common strategy for compensating the armor loss is to pair
激怒
together with
树皮术
(see below) on pull.
Defensive Cooldowns
While gearing for high EHP and avoidance helps improve your
passive
survivability while tanking, WotLK finally provides Feral tanks with an
active
way to boost their survival chance via three strong defensive cooldowns:

, and

. Especially during the early stages of progression in a raid tier, when tanks are relatively under-geared for the content, these cooldowns are very helpful for easing the tank healing burden while the raid learns boss mechanics. Even when bosses are on farm, these abilities can function as "bad luck protection" to prevent tank deaths in the event of unlucky damage spikes such as a long string of unavoided swings. By the end of the expansion,
Heroic
difficulty bosses in
冰冠堡垒
will be tuned directly around defensive cooldown usage, and most raid encounters will feature "tank buster" mechanics like
's

that
require
tanks to pop their defensive abilities preemptively in order to survive. As a result, learning the right times to use each of your three defensives in a given boss encounter will become a key element of raid progression on hard mode difficulties, and will be the primary differentiator between an exceptional tank and a mediocre one (regardless of class or spec):

boosts your health pool by 30% for 20 seconds, including healing you for that much if you are not topped off. It is invaluable both as a reactive tool in the event of an unlucky burst damage spike, and as a pre-emptive tool to increase your available health buffer when anticipating an upcoming boss special ability. The 30% HP buff can be further amplified to a whopping
45%
using

, making the Glyphed version easily your best defensive cooldown. Bears already possess much higher health pools than other tank specs in WotLK and are best utilized as burst damage soakers for that reason, so

plays to that core strength.

reduces your total damage taken per second (DTPS) by 20% for 12 seconds. In WotLK, this cooldown is finally usable while shapeshifted and is now off the global cooldown, making it much more valuable as a defensive tool for bear tanks. Since
树皮术
is only on a 1 minute cooldown (compared to 3 minutes for
生存本能
and
狂暴回复
), you should use it quite liberally when tanking rather than saving it only for emergencies. Generally speaking, Barkskin is well suited for periods of
sustained
damage increase relative to your available healing, while Survival Instincts will be better for
burst
damage spikes. As mentioned above, it can also be paired with
激怒
at the start of boss pulls in order to counteract the armor loss when Enrage is active.
狂暴回复
has been significantly buffed in WotLK to now restore 3% of the Druid's health every second, compared to a static 100 HPS in TBC. As a reference point, a bear wearing Phase 1 BiS gear will have 43,135 raid buffed HP, so Frenzied Regeneration will provide around 1300 HPS worth of healing when active, or 13 times more than the TBC version! The amount of healing provided will continue to scale with WotLK Stamina upgrades, changing Frenzied Regeneration from being borderline useless in TBC to becoming a staple defensive cooldown in a bear's WotLK toolkit.
Abilities for Feral Druid Tank in Wrath of the Lich King
Threat Abilities
These abilities make up a bear tank's core Threat generation toolkit, and are featured in the single target and AoE rotations presented earlier in this guide.
裂伤(熊)
Feral Talent
Highest Threat per Rage ability for bears in WotLK, used on cooldown in the PvE rotation. Also buffs
割伤
and
重殴
damage by 30%.

Great tool for pulling mobs in dungeons and raids, and a strong PvP debuff especially against Rogues. In WotLK, this ability has been buffed to now deal considerable damage and generate significant bonus Threat when cast in

, turning it into a staple tanking ability that should be cast on cooldown in the single target rotation. An added perk of casting the spell is that it will put up the mandatory 5% Armor Penetration debuff that is required for your raid to maximize its DPS potential.
割伤
Bleed ability that generates a significant amount of static Threat when cast, and also applies a high DPS stackable DoT to the target. Maintaining a full Lacerate stack on your target is optimal for maximizing your single target TPS and DPS, but is only worth doing for bosses that will live longer than ~60 seconds.
重殴
Maul is the Druid equivalent of
英勇打击
, and converts an auto-attack into a "yellow" ability that cannot glance and has enhanced damage and Threat. A flat 878 Threat per successful Maul is added to the Threat generated from the Maul damage itself. The
effective
Rage cost of Maul (with 5/5
凶暴
) is much higher than 10, because each Maul takes the place of a white hit that would have
generated
Rage instead. As a result, Maul should be viewed as a "Rage dump" ability that is only cast when you have more than enough Rage generation from incoming damage to support casting Mangle on cooldown and keeping up the Lacerate bleed. Compared to TBC, however, Maul will make up a much larger fraction of your total Threat generation in WotLK, since its damage is now scaled up by a whopping
87%
from the Mangle debuff, the reworked
野蛮暴怒
talent, and the new
狂乱撕扯
talent.
横扫(熊)
Swipe is the primary Threat generator for bears in AoE tanking scenarios. It is no longer capped to hitting only 3 targets, and the final rank of the ability will also exhibit 360 degree cleave behavior, making it easy to tank on the move in 5-man dungeons or raid speedruns. Additionally, Swipe functions as a secondary Rage dump for single target tanking as well, allowing you to fill all of your GCDs when plenty of Rage is available, but is lower priority than Maul in the single target rotation.
Utility Spells
Unlike the Threat abilities above, these spells are not cast on cooldown when tanking, and are instead reserved for situational use in order to keep mob packs under control.

This is a bear's single target taunt, and is a critical part of the tanking toolkit. In addition to briefly forcing a mob's attention on the tank,

also boosts the tank's Threat to match the top target on the Threat table, such that the mob will continue targeting the tank after the taunt expires. There are a myriad of potential applications for
低吼
: It can be used preemptively when first engaging a mob to guarantee initial aggro before the tank's first Threat abilities land, which protects against pull variance from DPS crits or
裂伤(熊)
/
重殴
misses. In addition, it can be used reactively as soon as a DPS pulls aggro to immediately return the mob's attention to the tank and "steal" the DPS player's Threat. There are also a number of raid bosses where the active tank must be swapped out due to raid mechanics, which is accomplished by taunting the boss off of the current tank.
Note that taunts are classified as spells with a base 17% resist chance, compared to only 8% for melee abilities. Due to the unification of Hit Rating and Spell Hit Rating into a single secondary stat in WotLK, the Hit Rating on your normal tanking gear will naturally reduce the chance of taunt resists occurring, but they will still be more common than melee misses since optimized bear tanking sets will never be Spell Hit capped. For this reason, it is worth running

for any boss encounters where taunt swaps are critical, but the Glyph should not be necessary for standard dungeon or raid tanking.

This is the analogue to

for Feral Druids, and is another essential part of a bear's tanking toolkit. AoE taunts can be used preemptively to group up trash mobs in dungeons and raids, so that DPS classes with strong AoE output can burst them down. Alternatively,

can be used reactively to protect caster DPS from mob packs running towards them, which is especially useful in 5-man dungeons where DPS players are often overzealous with their AoE spells. In single target situations,
挑战咆哮
can also be used as an emergency backup taunt if

is resisted. It is important to note that
挑战咆哮
is classified as a
fixate
rather than a true taunt. This means that no Threat is transferred to the tank when it is used, and the mobs will return to attacking the top target on their Threat table after the fixate expires.

Short duration stun that can be used for crowd control in both PvE and PvP.
野性冲锋 - 熊
Feral Talent
Versatile utility spell with a variety of uses in both PvE and PvP content. Feral Charge functions as a key crowd control ability and interrupt, and is also used to bridge the gap between the Druid and their target. It can be used to intercept fleeing players or mobs, or as mitigation against slows. In PvE, several mobs and raid bosses have knock-back mechanics, but Feral Charge allows Druid tanks to trivialize these mechanics by returning to melee range immediately.

Defensive raid debuff used to significantly reduce damage taken from raid bosses while tanking. In Classic WoW, mobs scale much harder with Attack Power than players, so AP debuffs are critical for reducing tank DTPS. However,
挫志咆哮
does not stack with

from Protection and Retribution

s. The Paladin version is applied passively rather than costing a GCD to put up, and only requires a 2 talent point investment compared to the 5 points required to max out

. As a result, it is always better for a

in the raid to keep up the debuff instead for improved raid efficiency.
External Buffs

raid buff, providing both offensive and defensive benefits to every raid member. Additionally, you can spam Gift of the Wild on your raid in between pulls in order to fish for an

proc prior to entering combat.
荆棘术
Helpful Threat buff for tanks in raids and 5-man dungeons. If a Balance or Restoration Druid in your raid has specced into
荆刺
, then they should provide this buff instead.
激活
Innervate has been significantly nerfed in WotLK to restore just a flat 7866 Mana to the target over 10 seconds, no longer scaling with the target's Spirit. Nevertheless, it should still be gifted to any raid member who can make use of the extra Mana on a long enough fight (most notably Arcane
法师
s). Since Innervate cannot be cast in form and incurs a GCD, this can only be done before the start of a pull, or when there are breaks in tanking during an encounter.
