Fantastic ability in theory, unforunately it's a large enough gamble to use when it's most useful that you will never be encouraged to use it. When effective, this ability will allow you to pull singular targets from a pack. The problem unfortunately is there is a relatively high chance (From experience ~10%) the enemy will resist the Mind Soothe. If this happens, you will aggrovate the entire mob of enemies towards yourself and your tank will have to act quickly to get you out of hot water.

Perhaps if the ability weren't so easily resisted it would be useful, but as it is it remains nothing more than an empty slot in your action bar.

I'm wondering, is this useful in PvP?

Lets say we have a Hunter with 46(?) yard range, can this then shorten it down to 36 yards? Then it could be used to make kiting in arenas easier (or just in bgs if u want to get away).

Or does it just affect the aggro range on normal mobs?

I find this useful for soloing/leveling only. It's good when your just trying to get to that area without having to deal killing mobs one by one just to get there but sometimes it fails. I'd rather you do a test on a mob each time you level to see how close you can get to it, while it's active, to see how big of a gap you have to squeeze in. Keep in mind that if the mob is greater then you then your chances of getting aggro will be greater so I'd also recommend to test +1 and +2 your level also.

I haven't really found a use for it in an dungeon yet. I can probably see this working if tank is trying to do a "LINE OF SIGHT" pull but nothing else. I haven't really done enough instances yet to prove this otherwise.

It's pretty helpfull if you have a quest in an instance you can probably solo but don't want to go through the trouble of clearing the whole damned thing.
And it can be used in instances/raids if a pat comes up behind the group, just to give everyone a little bit more time to react to it (and run to a safer spot). Not that this will help 9/10 times, since almost everyone ignores INC PAT anyway, even if you spam /rw it.
So I pretty much agree with Sandeer.

Do not forget this spell when leveling your priest. Now with the new loot times (1 second, if I'm not mistaken) you can Mind Soothe a target, steal the (object) quest item, or loot your mob witch is near other humanoids and get the hell out of there! Saved me loads of time. You'll have to figure out yourself a bit how large the range is though.

Oh those times, long before TBC...me, a 60 priest and my 60 warrior friend "farmed" BRD together thanks to this. We could just walk past nigh all the guards in the instance, sometimes even ridiculously close, and kill just the bosses. We even got the epic chain chest from the Ring of Law event. The times, sniff.

Does this thing have any use in PvP? I.e. will it reduce the actual range that people can attack you by? Like a caster's range for spells, being reduced down to 26 instead of 36?

'Useless?' How many of your priest offensive abilities have a 40 yard range?

That's right, none except this baby. Use to put yourself or something in combat (preventing mountups, stopping drinking, blocking sap).

It is worth noting that as of Cataclysm (presumably 4.03, not yet in 4.01) this spell will also work on dragonkin in addition to humanoids.

If you massively outlevel mobs then using this will actually INCREASE their aggro radius.

I thought I was imagining things but after quite a bit of testing, I'm pretty sure it's right.
Level 85 running Sethekk Halls Heroic and MgT Heroic for the mounts. Whenever i use Mind Soothe on the level 70 trash they aggro me as I walk past... without using it I can walk past un-noticed.

This spell makes everything rather easy to pass by enemies. Soloing a dungeon/raid, invading into/hiding away from guards inside enemy territory, or simply trick some poor enemy player into thinking they need to get closer for their attacks apparently.

For those that are curious, this does -nothing- to mobs that are at the minimum agro radius (levels are gray). Tried it while soloing a lowbie dungeon for transmog gear; Doesn't make slipping through tight spaces easier.

I'm aware it's a bit of a useless notion, but there you go. There is a minimum, and this won't go below it.

This spell will not carry over into Mists of Pandaria unfortunately. After being designated the least used spell in the priest feedback threads, Blizzard decided that it would not survive the spring cleaning.

Good bye Mind Soothe. You will be missed.

Returning for the Shadowlands expasion with the de-prunning. Useful in modern Mythic+ runs to allow some mob skips for better timers without the need for party-wide invisibility effects.

Even returning the tooltip is still worded poorly. This ability reduces the aggro radius of npcs. It does not reduce the range of an enemy's attacks or abilities. This spell has no effect on enemy players.
