A Complete guide to farming Voidtalon of the Darkstar

Back with another guide! This one is for the new Voidtalon of the Darkstar WoD's "Ultra" rare ground mount. It's a purple version of Flametalon of Alysrazor While the hunt for this mount is unique from all others, it also reminded me a lot of farming the Grey Camel from Uldum. This mount is obtained by clicking on a portal called the Edge of Reality, entering a scenario and simply looting an egg near an already dead The Last Voidtalon which is found on the floor inside. No combat required. Sounds easy enough right? Sure, if you can find the portal...

Edge of Reality portal and Scenario
The Edge of Reality portal is misty purple in color, kinda reminding me of the Death Knight's gate. They can be easily over looked as they make no sound, so turn up your graphic settings. Edge of Reality can not be targeted and leaves no icon on your mini-map. It also can not be picked up by add-ons such as NPC Scan. The portal is only up at one location at a time. There are 18 known spawn points in all. Shadowmoon Valley having the most with 5, all the other zones have 2-3. The portal is thought to remain at one spot for about 3 mins, if not clicked it then disappears and reappears in another location. There is no level requirement for clicking the portal.

Once clicked the portal disappears. You are then put into a short queue (5sec.) for a scenario. When the queue pops it will ask you to enter giving you a special loading screen. Once inside, you will find yourself on a stone platform with a dead Voidtalon and an egg. Simply loot the egg for your mount. There is nothing else. No one in your group will be able to loot the mount, and only the player who clicked the portal can enter. This mount can not be traded or sold. If you find a portal while cross realm, once clicked you will be given the error message "You can not enter while in a pre-made group" not allowing you to queue for the scenario. But don't panic!... As of right now (6.1.2), you will be automatically mailed the mount (within 30 mins) just for clicking the portal. Once you have your mount you will no longer be able to interact with future portals which helps prevent trolling by other players. The re-spawn timer for these portals seem to be about 2-7 days. Most servers seeing only a single spawn per week. What makes camping this mount so frustrating is not knowing if someone else has already found the portal. Even if so, I have a plan!...

Lara's Method
I was able to obtain Korgath's 2nd Voidtalon, and went on to help others. One fact we know about these portals is that server reset does effect it's spawn timer. The majority of portals are reported spawning within 4 hours of a server reset. My method allows you to cover multiple servers increasing your chances.

Shadowmoon Valley and Frostfire Ridge are our best chance because of their multiple spawn points being so close together. If you find one crowded use the the other. I prefer FFR. On the evening prior to Tuesday's reset, park your main at Frostfire Ridge. FFR is the only zone to have 3 side by side spawn points. I always camp from on top the small hill @52/17 between the 1st and 2nd spawn point. If you have alts on different servers you can park them there as well. If you have alts on the same server park them at spawn points in any other zone you wish. The main focus will be FFR. Once servers come up be ready to log in ASAP! 2 of the 6 portals I have found were up within seconds of coming on line. Check the first two spawn points (51/19&52/18) then ride over to the 3rd spawn point (53/18) to the far right. If you do not see the portal up on your server, open group finder and click "premade groups" then click "custom" and join a group, any group really. You can sign up for 2-3 groups if you are not getting fast invites. I like the ones that are set to auto invite for garrison use. Joining these groups will server hop you to the group leader server. Again start from the cliff check both spawns and ride to the right to check the 3rd spawn. If nothing is up, leave this group and join another. Don't forget to check your own server in between hops. I would give it 4 hours and then try again next reset. I believe the chances are much higher of finding the portal in the first 4 hours. Finding a portal after Tuesday's reset will rely purely on luck, making Voidtalon truly "ultra" rare.

Remember, Each zone has its very own portal with its very own spawn timer! This is different to when it was first released back in WoD.
You can no longer get this portal straight after a server restart. The minimum spawn timer after a server restart (weekly or maintenance) is 48 hours.
If a portal despawns you will not expect to see it respawn for 2 - 8 hours.
If a portal was claimed then you will not expect to see it respawn again for 7 - 48 hours.
A portal is up for 15 minutes per spawn.

Came upon The Edge or Reality portal in Nagrand right at its spawn point outside the BMAH, on my level 40 warrior that I sit at there. I panicked when i saw it immediately hoping over to my main and flying over there, panicked even more because it was gone so got back on my alt and clicked on portal in relief. Only to be killed by a talbuk right before i could click enter from the scenario. at which point i was very angry and started freaking out, but when I got back to the BMAH i saw I had mail, and thank the lord almighty for Archmage Khadgar sent me the mount.

Did my usual realm-hopping after today's reset trying to get this mount. Found the portal, but was met with the following error when I tried to click it:

You cannot do that while using the Premade Group Finder

Had a miniature heart attack, but the error just means that it couldn't queue me for the scenario to loot the mount. The mount came in the mail about 10 minutes later. So if you see that error, do not fear!

How long until you recieve the mail? I read 20min but it's not the case :S
Today I found one in Talador while in a x-realm raid group, I clicked the portal and it said "you cant do that while in a raid group" or something similar.
So I thought "ok, i read you get the mails in 20min or so, so it's fine" and left the group.
It was at 10:00, Bladefist I believe. Now it's 20:00 and I still don't have recieved the mail :(

EDIT: Ok, funny situation. So after I wrote this I went back ingame to check my bags or something...and noticed I got a mail lol. It was with the mount :). What a timing!
Took 10hours tho...far from 20min stated by some people...

So I came here to research how to go about getting this mount. I read all the spawn points, decided where I was going to try and get it, downloaded cross realm assist and everything. I am sure all of the information here and the add on are helpfull, but I got no chance to use it. I flew to sargerie rise looked down at the bottom of the cliff on my server and there the portal was. I was so freaked out I jumped off the side and didn't hit my glider in time. Hit a rock and it dropped me to 3% health. Got to the ground, clicked portal, joined scenario, looted egg and danced.

Found today in Gorgrond 56.0, 40.0 just north of Everbloom Wilds flight point. Sylvanas-EU at 8:50am CEST (just after server reset).

Definitely recommend spreading your alts over all the spawn points the evening before reset and logging through them as soon as the servers are up - be quick though, plenty of realm-hoppers around. Don't forget to take a S.E.L.F.I.E. when you're in there since you can't get in again!

To all of you wondering, I can, in fact, confirm the 47.7, 27.57 spawn point within the Bloodmaul Slag area of Frostfire!

It's a bit hard to see, but that was the shot the edge of reality macro took, and I was too excited to finally find it to take a SS right in front of the portal itself. Found it within the 4 hour mark after reset, just past 11 AM EST. Good luck!

Fun fact : you can see 3 giant versions of this thing in front of the Black Temple entrance, each being channeled by a pair of satyrs. Exact same model, just scaled up. These make no sound, however, while the actual Edge of Reality makes this sound, very quietly.

Also, you can see its spawn animation if you go to Zul'drak, toward the first flight of stairs, the one that goes up to the Argent Stand. The brown smoke atop the stairs is in fact a brown recolor of the portal, and it "spawns" as you approach it. It looks like a white beam of light landing straight on the floor, spreading a ring of colored particles as the portal appears. The Edge of Reality does share this spawning animation, as seen on this great screenshot that isn't mine.

I'm 100% getting the next one that pops on my server. How? Because I parked a toon in every zone so now all I have to do is toon hop. I'll prob end up getting it tomorrow after server reset for sure but doing this is for the between hours. All the time spent flying from zone to zone reduces your chances greatly because the portal only stays up for 3 minutes and will disappear if not clicked. 3 minutes goes very quick when flying from zone to zone.

If you're serious about getting this mount then you need to park your toons in every zone. You need a total of 5 characters that can fly as you'll die on the ground. I have a 100, 92, 82 and two 70s parked. I put one of the level 70s in FFR as those spawn points don't really have any mobs. I had one of the 70s in Talador but those butterflies kepy aggrowing me so I switched it up a little.

Anyway, just wanted to share this because a guy on my server got it around 2pm this past Friday so I've been literally flying back and forth for 50+ hours and have not seen it. The only thing I can think of is someone got it when I finally went to sleep for a few hours which is upsetting because here I am dedicating all my time to it, and then some guy walks along and gets it. Also, download Cross Realm Assist. It's an addon that will put you in premade groups that have auto-invite on instead of you having to manually do it, and it won't ever put you in the same group twice so as you're flying around checking spots on your server in that specific zone and you don't see anything you can hit join and it will put you in a group and then you fly around in that specific zone and check the spots. If you don't see it you click leave, and click join again and it puts you in another group and you check the spots again. Once you join all the groups possible it will start saying scan more instead of join, and that's when you switch toons to a toon in another zone, and you check for the portal on your server and if nothing you do the same thing until there's no more groups to join. Switch to another toon in another zone, check yours again, and if nothing realm hop and check those spots in that zone. This rotation will have you check every single zone on your server and then every single server that has a premade available. You'll be able to check every spot on every XR listed. If nothing you start over again from the first character.

You most likely won't get this overnight but keep at it and you'll eventually get it. This is coming from someone who has every single rare ground mount in the game especially the ones from Dungeons/Raids. I'm still working on the Blue Battle Tank from Arch but not sure if this is more dreadful or that is. Arch mount farming is probably the worst I've ever experienced but this isn't too far off either.

Hello. So I've been checking for this thing for a little over a week now. I got my own on Monday, Oct 19th on Anub'arak at 2:30 pm realm time in front of Mok'gol Watchpost in Nagrand. I asked a GM if I could see portal to help friends find it, GM said yes. I kept searching and found another portal on Saturday morning (technically) as it was 12:01 am realm time. It was located in Gorgrond in the crater. I called a friend of mine over from Frostfire ridge, and she got there in time and was able to see the portal, interact with it, queue for scenario and get her mount. Fastforward to just now, it was 12:06 am realm time on Anub'arak, and I was on my level 90 death knight at the spawn location on the border of Spires of Arak and Talador. I was just chatting with the friend who I called over to Gorgrond to get her voidtalon a few nights earlier, and all of the sudden I heard a portally noise and my screen got engulfed in the portal. Edge of Reality was on my mouse tooltip thing because the portal took up the whole screen because of where I was standing. I invited a friend and he flew over, but he couldn't see portal. He left group and relogged, even zone hopped to talador and back. He couldn't see portal :(

So I called another friend out and he, too, was unable to see it. It was kinda sad :(
I invited a third friend, but after 1 minute of her flying, the portal despawned.

Also, one friend was from a different realm, while the other was from a realm that is connected to Anub'arak. My friend that successfully got her voidtalon on saturday morning in gorgrond was also from a realm connected to Anub'arak.

Anyway, I'll add some useful information. On Anub'arak, the portal appeared at around 12:07 am realm time, and it disappeared approximately 15 minutes later, at 12:22 am. So I will assume that this means the maximum time an Edge of Reality portal can be up may possibly be 15 minutes.

Even though I got my mount a week ago, I'm enjoying hunting for this portal for friends. I wish I knew why my two friends were unable to see it, though. I will try again an hour later to see if it will have moved to a different location, by then. If I find it again, hopefully one of my friends will be able to see it, this time. lol. I shall upload a few screenshots of the incident, sometime.

i actually just found 2 portals within 15 minutes of each other. i found it and my best friend who is at work asked me to try and look for his accound aswell. and almost instantly found another one. both in goregrond but 2 different spawn points. (yes i used serverhopping its so bull%^&* OP)

painfull part is i camped for hours hopping and found mine, found his within 15 min after no problem.. i suggest u camp goregrond. i camped everywhere but there they seem to be up the most for me.

Edge of Reality Portal Mount Claimed on Lothar Tuesday 2:10pm server time Frostridge (far right spawn).

Story:
In the past, I have seen the portal 3 times while lvling my hunter. I never clicked on them thinking it was some kind of mage portal. The 4th time I see it I click on it out of curiosity then decline invite thinking it was some kind of BG in the woods. Well, I was mailed the mount but I had been having horrible D/C issues and when I went to open the mail if would d/c me. I tried many times and gave up. I logged in a few days later hoping the d/c issues would be fixed by then and the mail was gone! No mount in the mail, my bags.. my bank NOTHING! I even checked the Item Restore option and there still was no mount! I contacted several GM's over the week and they would not give me the mount because they did not see it in the mail, on the item restore page or even that I clicked the portal!. The GM's told me they cannot verify that the portal has been clicked after an hour. SOME BS RIGHT?

Well, infuriated I do more research on the portal and assumed Frostridge and Shadowmoon Valley areas were the best places to camp. I camped about 5 days and today about 2 hours and 10 mins after reset (they reset twice) I found the portal and claimed my mount. That was some Karma right there. I hope this info helps a little for my fellow Lothar hunters.

I stayed up all night on reset night because i was trying to fix my sleep schedule. I thought I'd come on and see if i can get "the purple firelands mount" I had been calling it. After an hour of server hopping, portal was right in front of me. First week I had ever done it.

Just found the portal behind the Rylak (middle spawn) in Frostfire on Kazzak-EU.

I got the You cannot do that while in a premade group error before it promptly disappeared and I freaked out a little before coming here.

NOTE: Even with decent graphics it was quite difficult to see at first with how bright the ground is.
I definitely recommend anyone farming to get an addon that alerts you to a spawn and marks it for you.

While waiting for the mount to show up in my mail I was regaled with a sad story of how someone was camping on one side of the rock by the trees (far right spawn) and the portal showed up behind the Rylak and someone else got the mount :(

Not sure if any of you are familiar with this, but today I came across the Edge of Reality using cross realm assist! When i clicked the portal it said something along the lines of "you cannot do that in a premade group". I remember someone saying that if this is the case, you will receive the mount in the mail. I can confirm that the portals start spawning only an HOUR after server resets. I just got mine today in Spires of Arak (on server Grizzly Hills) an hour and a half after servers came back up.
Also, it is super useful to have the add-on NPC Scan as it literally pinpoints on your map where the random portal spawns are. Something to note is that they recently updated it and added 1-2 more spawn points in each zone. (I got mine from one of the updated spots.)

I just found the Edge of Reality at 5:11pm server time on Ahn'Qiraj EU after camping two spawn points simultaneously in Frostfire Ridge which are in close proximity to each other. I camped there for about two days without leaving and without closing the game, with my mouse hovered over one of the spawn points. There's a really useful mouseover macro which will play a sound file when you hover over the portal with your cursor, it can be found in the comments here and/or in the comments for 黑暗之星的虛無之爪.

Here's the screenshot the mouseover macro took as the portal spawned under my mouse curser: http://i.imgur.com/Be1zBQl.jpg You can see the portal in the process of spawning in the bottom-right of the screenshot.

I would have used the cross-realm assist addon to realm hop but they recently nerfed it, making it so that you only transfer to another realm if the leader of the party is in the same zone.

The mount is beautiful and really worth the patience you put into camping it.

Thanks to the efforts of the Secret Finding Discord, we have cracked the new changes to Voidtalon and why it isn't spawning at reset like it used to. Many changes were done to the Edge of Reality portals in 7.3. Here's what we found out after a month of research with over a hundred portals found across US and EU regions.

Spawn Timers
-48 hours after realm resets.
-If a portal despawns, 2 hours at the earliest for a respawn in the same zone. .
-If it is claimed, upwards to 10-48 hours before it spawns again in the same zone.

More info
-Each zone has its own personal timer unrelated from one another.
-Portals will spawn, and be active for exactly 15 minutes.
-CRZ does impact portals, just like it impacts other rare spawns.
-The bug that prevented people from seeing Voidtalon Edge of Realities no longer exists. All toons can see portals.
-Class trials CAN click these portals and receive the mount.
-It’s possible for two portals to be up at once on the same realm, but not the same zone.
-You can click the portal in a party or raid group and still receive the scenario prompt.

WAR MODE INFORMATION:
-War mode works as a separate "realm" for each realm, so if a portal is claimed on Tichondrius war mode on in Shadowmoon Valley, that means it only goes on cooldown for Shadowmoon Valley war mode ON on that realm. War mode OFF Shadowmoon Valley on Tichondrius still has an active timer
-That being said, if it spawns in one war mode, it will not be visible in the other.

I heard characters over level 100 cannot see the portal. Is this true?

Well, I finally got 黑暗之星的虛無之爪!

Some quick notes:

I was able to see the portal with a level 110 character (as some players have reported certain portal spawns are not visible to max level characters) Though I had not completed any quests in Draenor on that character other than the first garrison quest
Neither Silver Dragon nor NPC Scan flagged the portal or notified me of it spawning
The portal was fairly easy to see with max graphics
The portal made no sound when spawning and made no sound when I approached it. So it is possible that you won't get an audio cue
The portal spawned several hours after the Friday morning server reset
The portal was found in Spires of Arak at 50.4, 6.1

Finally found this last night at midnight!

Can confirm the portals can be seen, and clicked on by level 110 trial accounts, as well as being able to loot and learn the mount.

I made trial accounts on about 7 realms and parked em all in Shadowmoon Valley and flew across all the spawn points before hopping to a new realm. Took about 3 weeks of camping a few hours each day. Don't forget the portals CANNOT spawn until 48 hours after a server reset, this includes stealth resets during the week.

The bug preventing some characters from seeing Voidtalon portals has been patched. All characters (that have not learned the mount since this was patched) can see them, regardless of level or phase.
The Warcraft Secret Finding Discord discovered that learning the music scroll that drops off of Blackhand 樂譜：A Siege of Worlds would also learn the "voidtalon quest", which would prevent that character from ever seeing portals again. Fascinating! However, learning that music scroll now doesn't prevent you from seeing portals, and all previously impacted characters can now see portals. For once, thank you Blizzard for actually fixing a rare spawn!

I clicked it while queued for heroic island expedition and it said queued for too many instances and despawned, the mount was then mailed to me 😊

So I just found this portal in Shadowmoon Valley, Kirin Tor server (RP), chromie time WM on at roughly 9:15pm ST in Patch 9.2.7 .

Main reason I'm posting a comment is because when I clicked on the portal, I got the queue for the "Edge of Reality", it didn't immediately prompt me to enter said instance.

5 minutes after, still nothing. So I tried reloading. Nothing. Starting to panic because I saw a few posts saying they get the prompt to enter instance within a few minutes.
10 minutes after getting in queue, still nothing, contemplating how I'd reach out to blizz support and if they'd even give me the mount.
Finally, after 15 MINUTES, I got the prompt to enter the instance, clicked and entered, and finally got my egg/mount.

So if like me, your queue is taking a while, just DO NOT LEAVE QUEUE. Wait it out.

If you're afraid of having trouble to see the portal, you can test its visibility on your machine in front of the Black Temple: some demons around the entrance open gigantic portals that are the exact same model!

Are these still spawning? Trying to find a portal for a friend but I haven't seen once since before 10.0

These still spawn in 10.1.5. I finally found a portal after weeks of checking on a Tuesday, Draenor - EU sever at 3:50am WM on. I followed the advise of all the green posts, but I think that these can just spawn randomly at any time. So just keep checking everyday :)

Found one today, clicked it and went into about a ~20-22 min queue, but it finally popped and got the mount! Don't be discouraged if you go into a long queue - just stay put!

I have done everything that all threads have suggested

-park an alt on each possible portal
-log 48 hours after reset
-do WM on, do low pop server, do Chromie time
-don't sleep, don't eat, don't kiss sun

I blew my Christmas break between Breezebiter, this and the vinyl off Steel Singer or the buggy Reclamation Rig. And I have multiple hunters, so camping for spirit beasts is no strange thing for me but at least you get a tame after x hours.

I'm playing on a "free trial" account so no access to mail at the moment. (I only sub to continue the tradition of not getting rare holiday mounts these days.)

I found the Edge of Reality in Shadowmoon Valley, clicked it and was entered into the queue. Having read other comments here I knew it might be a wait. I stayed in the zone and maxxed out my fishing. Messed around a bit hunting rares. Ages passed. No queue pop. I flew to Lunarfall and realized I'd never set up my garrison.

I went down to the wrecked ship and accepted the quest to follow the Exarch. Did the intro quests, killed Quakfefist and established my garrison. (1 hr 47 minutes in queue at this point.) The cutscene played and the second it ended the queue popped.

Coincidence? Who knows?. Just felt that I should share.

Tried to brute force this multiple weeks via 15 Chromie time alts with no joy. All alts were on a separate cross realm server. (world boss time to check)

Plopped them all in Shadowmoon.

Started on Friday Morning 48 hours after server start (using npc time to make sure)

Cycled through the 15 alts for 12 hours on Friday (by the time i got to the 15th alt it was around 15mins and i started from the beginning)

Tried again on Saturday

Have done the same every Friday/Saturday for 2 months.

Haven't seen a single portal. That's either really bad luck or something weird is going on with the spawn.

Edit: In hopes of expanding my chances/ getting access to more phases i created a class trial and went to shadowmoon and the portal was there on my first fly over without even needing to relog etc... I've tried probably over 1000 phases with chromie time alts and the literal first time i use a class trial it's there.. can't be a coincidence.
