Spawn rate isn't as low as mentioned, or I'm just lucky. Ran in as a level 60 paladin past all the mobs with no aggro straight past Witch Doctor, stairs, and Hydromancer area. No luck.

Rinse, repeat, and lo and behold he spawned in the pool area second run through. Dropped a green, and as I was after the cane I figured I'd keep running til the instance lock kicked in.

Third run through, he spawned in the stairs area, dropped the cane. A full ten minutes of farming (I stopped to kill Witch Doctor Zum'rah every time). :)

Edit: It may be that he is just overlooked most runs. Since I already had it, I added Dustwraith as a custom NPC in _NPCScan (mainly out of laziness). Forgoes the hassle of spamming /tar Dust.

So maybe I just have the WORST luck, but I've run Zul'Farrak 40 times in the last 3 days and I still have yet to see him. I run all the way around killing 巫醫祖穆拉恩 each time. However I did find both 杉達爾‧沙掠者 and 澤雷利斯 in the same run right at the fountain in the main room. All i gotta say is if he drops a green and not the off-hand I'm gunna blow a gasket!

Only recently found out about the sheat-on-back off-hand available from this guy.

He spawned on my 12th attempt, at the stairs, in the middle of one of the packs.

Needless to say i was happy to see him :D

After quickly finishing him off, his off-hand did indeed drop and i am now the proud owner of this cool off-hand :)

Spawned by one of the tents near the Temple steps for me.
Just heard about this today. After reading some comments here I expected quite a few runs to get him, but got him on my second try.

Barely killed anyone too, just rode in, checked, rode out, reset, and there he was on the second run

just found this guy and got my off hand after 2 hours of resetting zul'farrak.you can use npcscan addon to find him but if you don't wanna use it,I think a macro with /target Dustwraith will do the trick.the max range to target I found to be at Theka's room,just at the exit to Witch Doctor Zum'rah,so you won't have to go all the way to the back of the dungeon.hope this helps

If you're looking for this guy, try completing the Prisoner event. Instead of talking to the soldier after you kill the Troll bosses, talk to the Goblin and ask him to blow up the door. 3 times out of the 4 times I talked to the goblin, Dustwraith immediately spawned. Could've been supreme RNG.

As of 9th May 2017 he is still in the game.

If you are a fire mage and want to keep a staff on your back this is a must. After seeing another fire mage in Dala with this I was "right I'm off to WoWhead". After reading some comments I was left thinking 'no way it's that easy' but yes it is.

Made a macro /target Dustwraith and just ran around the dungeon (don't need to kill anything).
First run = nothing.
Second run, found him at the first tent standing with some other trolls in the pink zone (look at the map) were the Prisoner Event takes place. He dropped it.

I now have this on my back and a sword at my side. Just wish I could put the fire enchant on it now :(

He was just standing where a normal trash troll would be, by the tents at the base of the temple steps (the captives are held in cages at the top, he was at the bottom)...took about 2 hours of resetting and searching, and needlessly killing trolls.

As of patch 7.3.5 he is now dropping 格里雷克的沙輪, 格里雷克的刻刀, and for some reason, 格里雷克之血.

Update: Seems to have been hotfixed out.

I was running early in patch 8.0.1 now with legacy loot mode (supposed to drop anything) as Feral and in Feral loot spec. Killed him multiple times and he only dropped greys. Switched to Balance loot spec and he dropped the off-hand first kill. Not sure if this is intended or not (maybe because it's a rare spawn and not technically part of the dungeon?) but since it appears to be a 100% drop and wasn't dropping as feral loot spec I tried switching on a whim. Keep in mind for yourself if it won't drop for you, try a loot spec that uses intellect off-hands.

Took about 20 mins of running a full lap of ZF spamming my "/tar Dust" macro and then resetting. He spawned in the room with the stairs. Got it first kill, on a resto druid.

It's been over 2 years, and this guy's loot is still broke. Just tested it on the 9.0 PTR, found him on my warrior and killed him, only greens. No offhand blue. Legacy loot mode still does not work for him or Zerillis still. Neither of them drop their guaranteed loot blues unless you are the right class, even in legacy loot mode. I have 0 hope now that this will be fixed and am just going to give up on farming anything that drops from old world rares. I shouldn't have to get on my clothy in order to farm this one specific item that a warrior, which can wear anything but wands can in fact equip and learn the appearance of.

Pre 7.0 I was farming all of eastern kingdoms and kalamdor instances on my warrior for plate+weapon mogs. I stopped post 7.0 once I got to ZF and found out the loot tables were not following legacy loot mode rules and still using the PL loot rules that were forced upon us in 7.0. I, and many others over the years have repeatedly reported this issue that had seemed to fall on death ears. I use to get on the PTR every time it was updated to personally check and see if it had been fixed yet or not. I just did so today for the first time since 8.0's ptr and was disappointed to see it is still broke.

Of note, the other rare, (I forget his name) who drops an int staff, does still drop his INT STAFF for my warrior, whom is not specialized to use it. So it is only a problem with some rares, not all. These old world rares generally have *ONE* item they can drop, and will ALWAYS drop it when killed. (pre PL rules anyway) So the fact that, these 2 rares do NOT means they are bugged. It says here on wowhead they have a about 70-80% drop chance, which is misleading, as the 20-30% that do not drop, are from classes that are not int/leather users. If you look at the other rare in the instance, whom I forgot his name (didn't look him up because, his staff dropped) I am sure it will say 100% drop chance even here on wowhead.

Can't be targetted from the very start of dungeon so move in a bit to Gahz spawn or so

Obtainable in 9.1.5. Got it first try on my Druid. I don't think spec matters, but went Boomie to make sure. :)

To get it, use a "/target Dustwraith" macro, and run through the dungeon hitting the macro, since he spawns in random places among the random mobs.

He can get targeted through walls from pretty far away, so don't worry about "getting super close" to all the mobs.

Spec matters folks! 灰塵怨靈 only drops his precious 沙漠行者藤條 to Intellect-users! Everyone else can grind this instance for years and still not get this off-hand to drop at all.

Duskwraith spawns very often (1/2 runs - sometimes more) in the purple zone in Zul'Farrak by random tent (By Nekrum) - that's my experience from farmin' his stuff.

He still spawns as of 11.0.7

Spawned at the Nekrum boss area, after 9th reset. (out of 10 attempts)

Didn't drop 沙漠行者藤條 on mage, so it doesn't seem a guaranteed loot.

if you're trying to farm this on your druid or monk, there is a lazy way of resetting the dungeon. it does work with other class teleports but i don't know which other int users have class teleports :)

---- this only works out of combat ---

once you confirmed that dustwraith isn't up or you killed it and need to reset:

1. use dreamwalk/zen meditation
2. once you've been ported, reset instances
3. use dreamwalk/zen meditation again
4. tadaah, you're now outside the dungeon

it works with other teleports of this type and other instances as well, for raids you just need to change the difficulty.

Priests can fish for this rare by running to the first T-junction inside the instance and spamming the following macro to chain-cast 心靈幻象:

/tar Hydromancer
/tar Sandfury Executioner
/tar Dustwraith
/cast Mind Vision

Additionally, multiple rares can spawn in a single instance. I had both 灰塵怨靈 and 澤雷利斯 in one of my runs.

No loot at all, literally nothing — not even green, let alone blue. So is this a bug? Do items even drop?

I killed him several times as a feral druid with my loot specialization set to restoration, but he never dropped the cane... I switched to restoration and to "current loot specialization," and it dropped the first time I killed him.
