For the majority of players around the world, this is a Football.

There is also the 厚皮足球 ie. an American Football or what looks like a Rugby Ball to most players outside of the US.

Players of both factions get both this 特製版足球 and 厚皮足球 from the 2012 冬幕節禮物.

In an effort to clear up any confusion here is a simple explanation.

If the ball spends most of its time being kicked around a field, it's probably a Football
If the ball spends the majority of its time being held by a man in a stripey shirt with a whistle whilst men with helmets stand around waiting for John Madden to finish drawing on the TV screen, it's probably an American Football

Due to the remarkable similarity it is easy to confuse the two. Hence why we have the achievement 這兩個都是足球嗎?.

Full Disclosure: The author expresses no preference between the two sports. His prefered sport is killing Internet Dragons. < scroll to the pictures.

Hey guys, I just found out a glitch. And it uses real life physics also.

When someone kicks a ball to you while you are sitting down, you have to kick it, inturrupting you.
^With that being said, this Foot Ball can CANCEL EATING / DRINKING when you kick them the ball!
Made some dude waste like... 4 or 5 food before figuring out that they were wasting it.

The cooldown shows as 5 seconds when you use the item, but it actually scales with distance. If you are at maximum range, it takes about five seconds for the ball to travel all the way there and back again. If you are standing right next to the person, the cooldown will show 5 seconds, and reset immediately when the ball arrives back to you.

Amusing note: Standing right next to someone and spamming use on this will make you look like you are in a kick / slap fight.

This item is not on the global cooldown, can be used in combat, and does not require you to be facing your target.

Using a macro like this...

This is one of most annoying thing I saw in the game, specially if you do RP...
Nothing more annoying during an immersive conversation with another RP-character than a stranger throwing you this ball.
Please, Blizzard, remove the "automatic" return! I don't want to play football if I don't want to. Besides, many **** players uses this ball to annoy random players.
My wish to Father Christmas for the next year is have a board with a big nail to prick those dammed balls!

Has a 40 yard range for friendly targets only. If left in a displayed Hotbar then a visible indication of distance. Might be useful for some players.

Use IsItemInRange(90888,"target") in an AddOn or macro with a result "1" meaning you are within 40 yards. The player need not have this item in the bank/bags to do this.

Just discovered this item, like 厚皮足球 interrupts anyone's crafting/cooking/smelting queue which can be ridiculously annoying to those who leave their toons afk while attempting to smelt 1000 bars...

Also, if you stand close enough to the person you're kicking the ball to, it'll look like you're kicking them since the ball won't be visible with you and your target being so close together.

失竊的禮物 is obtained from the Winter Veil daily quest 那個卑鄙的傢伙... (H)/那個卑鄙的傢伙... (A). It requires you to kill the 可惡的格林奇 in Hillsbrad Foothills to free 麋鹿梅特森, as well as to recover 被偷走的禮物, which spawn only after the Greench is killed.
The quest can be done 18 times per character over the course of the Winter Veil holiday. As the level requirement is 80, any alts at or above this level can also do this for another 失竊的禮物.

They renamed this in 8.1 to be called Special Edition Foot Ball, presumably so as to not get confused with the 足球 from the vendor (even though they're functionally identical toys and always have been). They did not, however, do this to 厚皮足球, which has the same problem, so not quite sure why they bothered at all.
