As far as Jewelcrafters are concerned, these are the new Chalcedonies of Cataclysm. Compared to other uncommon quality gems, these are usually quite hard to come by through prospecting, and they're needed for a good amount of purposes:

When skilling as a JC, the Nightstone Choker is probably THE most useful design across the board. Save them for this!
Once you've reached 475 skill, you will unlock the daily quests, and one of these is A Present for Lila. Fortunately, Blizzard decided to remove Gem Perfection from all specific daily cuts (which didn't register as valid cuts for the JC dailies on early Cata launch), making it a little less troublesome.
And of course, just like any other green quality gem, they're required to transmute Shadowspirit Diamonds if you want to level your JC quickly, once you can afford a design of your choice from tokens. There's no alternative to this at the near end of skilling up, except the Fire Prism design, which is on a 20h CD.

I don't know how things really stand, but for me, these gems have had a really low drop rate out of prospecting. They seem to be rarest even though in theory they share the same chances of dropping as other uncommon gems. Any feedback?

They do seem rather rare, and it's exacerbated by the demand for them. On days where they are the JC daily, the price will spike well above 110g per on my server, and it seems like this is one of the more common dailies. Hoard these for your future dailies, aspiring jewelcrafters.

Im beginning to hate these stones.

Ive prospected about 25 stacks of elementium ore. And only come up with about 10 nightstones. I have stacks of all the other green gems. Which the other gems are selling for just over vendor price at 8-9g. While nightstones sit at 80g.And over a 100g on nightstone daily days.

so Wowhead says that there is a higher chance of prospecting out of obsidium ore can anyone confirm or deny this as true or just more people are prospecting obsidium

i just prospected three stacks of elementium ore and that yielded 1 nightstone. i prospected 5 obsidium ore (just 5 ore, not 5 stacks) and that gave me 1 nightstone as well.

i wonder if obsidium yields it more than elementium?

I don't know if this is just me being lucky or not, but I ended up getting 8 of these from 3.5 stacks of Elementium. 6 of them were in a row along with 2 at the end. It might be a coincidence but perhaps try prospecting at night.

These &*!@ing things definitely seem to be more rare than the other uncommon gems. I have SCORES of every other color, but struggle to come up with enough nightstones for the dailies and the fire prisms. It's extremely aggravating and damned if I'm paying 45g per stone for three every day.

If you see more of them at night, then I guess it's an aptly named gem.

Perhaps we should all prospect a bit later during the day, closer to the gem's prime time. ;D

When I prospect elementium and obsidium, I get far more zephyrite than anything else -- consistently. I get less nightstone than anything else -- consistently. Which is a bummer at JC skill level 490, because nightstone is the one you really want. Zephyrite sells for about 3g on my realm and nightstone 30-40g a piece.

It could be possible they do drop more in the evenings. In other versions of WOW they had fish you could only get at night. I'll have to check now, since I primarly play at night.

I have Obsessivley been farming Nighstone lately for leveling my JC for that stupid JC Daily Quest "A Present for Lila" and after several attempts and being purely frustrated of only getting a few from Elementium and Obsidium I finally came here to research I have actually tried that tip of starting to prospect them at night and oddly enough it seems to drop a lot more at night, and instead of Eternium I only been prospecting from Obsidium. Anyone else try this?

and some blues.

Either things have changed a lot since MoP dropped, or my luck is fantastic. I am averaging 1-2 per stack. My mining hunter is able to pull in 9 stacks per pass around Mt. Hyjal, so I am pulling in between 15-20 per day. As soon as I finish the Dalran dailies, I'm gonna start selling 'em.

After reading the comments with no sure answer on whether or not time of day mattered when prospecting, I decided to do an experiment myself to get comparable statistics. I mined 1040 (52 stacks) of Obsidium Ore. I put half (26 stacks) into my bank and prospected half at 5pm. Later I prospected the other half at 10pm. Here were my results.

I've also notice a low prospect rate on these during the Cata xpac. Not sure if they change or fixed that but as of Feb 10, 2014 I just prospect 5 in a row from 黑曜石礦
