So with one extra mirror image, would this increase the DPS aswell?

i wonder if it would be possible for a 5v5 team made up of all frost mages who had this glyph along with glyph of invisibility+ invisibility potion just cast mirror image, water elemental then just turn invisible and let the mobs kill the enemy players while they r safely invisible

Thirdly, you can't use potions in Arenas unless they are sanctioned, and Invis. potion is not.

Not to mention that when the mages become visible the enemy 5 man team will be loaded with battle buffs from the start.

For PvE, don't even consider this glyph.
For PvP, it can be useful, but you can probably find a better use of a major glyph spot. The Mirror Image spell is not extremely confusing. If you invis after casting, they can just AE and they'll know immediately the player that appears is the real one. And the mirror images are yellow when you hover em, while players are red. Plus they can just focus you before you cast it.
You can probably find a better glyph than this, unless it works extremely well with your class balance in an arena team for some reason.

imagine 5 FROST mages on an arena team with this glyph!

Mages who often BG pvp are likely to find more use from this glyph than from a geared mage doing Arena.
My logic stands that in a Battleground situation the mage must be able to dodge possibly the whole other team (If you've never been in an AB where the other side decides to zerg 1 node, consider yourself special) a glyph that allows the mage to temporarily be untargetable (with the use of invisi or even a well timed blink) greatly benefits the caster's survivabilty.
In Arena, I will admit that it is quite unnerving to get hit by a barrage of annoying frostbolts and having to tab the actual mage (this is granted that he didn't vanish or have his ice barrier up as these are dead give aways to the the mage's location), however in my personal experience, I never felt that the clones were annoying enough that a well placed AoE or 2 couldn't handle.

Plus they can just focus you before you cast it.
If your focus is a mage and he pops images, you lose focus. Otherwise I agree with you though.

Being as Glyph of Molten Armor is the only other reasonable third glyph. This Glyph of Mirror Images is one of the few all around glyphs worthy of replacing it. Since Blizzard decided to slowly kill off spirit again for mages, Glyph of Mirror Images is often the better choice for:
1) Mages with low spirit that mainly solo and quest
2) Mages with low spirit that do mainly 5 man instances
3) Mages with low spirit that do 10 man raids
That is quite a bit of mages.
I don't recommend this glyph for mages that:
1) Do 25 man raids but have low spirit (Molten better because you will have priest, paladin and druid buffs)
2) Have high spirit in general (Molten better obviously)
Blizzard defiantly needs to fix mage armors again! They itemized new true mage gear to kill spirit but Molten Armor and Mage Armor work mainly for spirit. I miss the days when mage armors had a couple flat abilities and not scale off gear, talents and glyphs so heavily. Mage armors were intended to be changed by mage according to what situation is thrown at them, now mage armors change only with gear, talents and glyphs and often mages keep same mage armor on, which is redundant and boring.

As of PTR patch 4.0.1, this is now a minor glyph.
Old effect: "Your Mirror Image spell now creates a 4th copy."
New effect (currently on PTR): "Your Mirror Images cast Arcane Blast or Fireball instead of Frostbolt depending on your primary talent tree."

anything useful if you're a frost mage?

In the new patch, I think this glyph is just a bad choice. I use mirror images as a ghetto feign death, and because I'm fire, for it's slow capabilities. If they're casting fireball or arcane blast, there won't be any slowing.

As an arcane mage, I can confirm this glyph is PURELY for aesthetic purposes. I just tested mirror image before and after I applied the glyph, and there is literally NO change in dps. While Explode1991 said they proc ignite in fire spec, in arcane I can confirm they do not proc anything at all- They DO NOT apply the slow effect, they do not proc clearcasting, they do not proc arcane missiles, etc. While this glyph may help you out in PvP by confusing your opponents visually- it does nothing at all from a dps stand point. You're better off with glyph of molten armor, glyph of arcane missiles, and glyph of arcane power as your three major glyphs (for arcane).

As Arcane Mage, in patch 4.0.3 applied today
(wowhead still shows 4.0.1):
I not fully confirm the fact that this glyph is purely aesthetical, the images
ARE
affected from your mastery or maybe from your spec, the numbers shows that Mirror Images' Arcane Blast hits more (even for a small number) than their Frostbolt. (590 AB vs 550 FB)
The BAD fact is that they cast exclusively Arcane Blast while the not-glyphed copies cast Fire Blast sometimes between their Frostbolts which fully compensate (and even surpass) the slightly increased damage from Arcane Blast.
How Blizzard can fix this?
1. Make the copies cast Missiles or Barrage at the same ratio they would cast Fire Blast.
or
2. Make the copies "benefit" from the Arcane Blast debuff.
In conclusion Mirror Images DPS:
Glyphed: 800dps
Unglyphed: 900dps
(might differ slightly for you cause the images are affected from your spellpower also.)
If someone is wondering, the Mirror Images can crit, but they have a standard mob critrate which is 5%, but that's not the page to discuss of.

Blizzard should make this so that the copies stack arcane blast buff or cast scorch with a chance to proc your own hot streak, and they should make this a major not a minor.

I did a number of different test cases to see whether, as Arcane, the glyph affected damage done. What I've found is that, for Arcane, the glyph actually causes the images to perform less overall damage over their 30 second lifespan. Though as discussed below, under certain circumstances, it may end up being a damage increase, though I haven't yet been able to confirm this.
The only buff I used was
Mage Armor
(which itself is
glyphed
). Due to their procs, I removed my
cloak
and
trinket
. This left me with 6262 spellpower. I attacked a level 85 target dummy. I admit, I only did 1 trial of each type (except as listed below), a small data set to be sure, but I only had so much time to blow on this test. :)
Two benchmark tests without the glyph
:
1) Without the glyph, the images did a total of
40517
damage; specifically, they did 33 Frost bolts averaging 983, 1 crit for 1471, and 12 Fire blasts averaging 550 each.
2) Without the glyph, I summoned the images when I had a 4stack of Arcane Blast up, and kept the 4stack up. The images did a total of
39475
(Frost: 32@981, 1@1487; Fire: 12@549) damage - virtually the same as #1 above.
7 tests with the glyph
:
1) Without any Arcane Blast buff, they did a total of
29675
damage (26 hits averaging 1097, 1 crit for 1625). Quite a bit less than unglyphed.
2) Summoning with a 4stack of the Arcane Blast buff, but letting it wear off, they did a total of:
30760
(27@1139) - basically the same as #1.
3) Keeping a 4stack of Arcane Blast, they did a total of
35318
(20@1643, 1@2456) AND THE IMAGES WENT OOM AFTER ONLY 22 SECONDS.
4) Same scenario as #3 - I wanted to see if going oom was a fluke, they did a total of
40269
(23@1642, 1@2504) AND AGAIN, THE IMAGES WENT OOM.
5) Testing to see if
Evocation
would help prevent them from going oom, I Evocated when I was at about 60% mana. They did a total of
40210
(23@1642, 1@2437), AND AGAIN, THE IMAGES WENT OOM.
6) Summoning with a 1stack of Arcane Blast, and going into a mana-efficient cycle (stack to 3, then cast Arcane Missiles or Arcane Barrage), they did a total of
37429
(27@1383, 3@1647), without going oom.
7) Summoning with a 4stack and going into the same mana-efficient cycle, they did
37204
(28@1213, 2@1617), again, without going oom.
So, what's the takeaway from all of this? Without anything else coming into play, this glyph is an absolute decrease in damage done for Arcane. However, what would be interesting to see is if the images can benefit from
Replenishment
. If so, then it *may* end up being an increase during a burn phase. If you extrapolate the damage done in glyph test #3 and #4, the images were on their way to doing over well 48k damage before they went oom - an increase of at least 25% over the non-glyphed baseline. If Replenishment could ensure they have enough mana, then, yes, it would be an increase. If I'm able to test this scenario, I'll update my post.
In the meantime, I am absolutely confused as to why if I am spamming Arcane Blast and draining my own mana, the images go oom. It seems like they somehow are affected by the mage's Arcane Blast buff, though how exactly is not clear to me.
UPDATE: I tested the
Replenishment
theory. I grouped up with a resto druid who used
Lifebloom
to trigger
Replenishment
via
Revitalize
. The mirror images do not seem to benefit from it. During a simulated burn phase, the mirror images still went oom, and did not beat the unglyphed damage count.
As Arcane, do not under any circumstances, use this glyph in pve, as it will lower your overall damage done
. The confusion factor may still make it useful for pvp. But for pve damage count? Forget it.
UPDATE 2: So, I just looked at my numbers again. I was too focused on the result of test #3, to the exclusion of tests #4 and #5 (the tests where the images went oom, but were actually right on par for damage done as compared to the unglyphed tests). All 3 tests where they went oom was when I was simulating a burn cycle, and in 2 of the 3, they did the same overall damage as their unglyphed cousins. I would therefore like to update my conclusion to:
If you are diligent about only call your images at the start of your burn cycle, they will go oom, but will do up to the same overall damage as if unglyphed
. If, however, you do not want to front-load the damage done by the images, or you do not
always
call the image at the start of your burn cycle, or you don't trust the 2-out-of-3 test odds, the glyph is a damage decrease. Test #3 might have been a fluke; or, my weapon is enchanted with
Hurricane
, which might have proc'd while performing tests #4 and #5. My understanding is that the images are supposed to be unaffected by the results of haste - but they may not be. Overall, I would advise against using this glyph as Arcane, for while it
may
be on par with the unglyphed for damage, there are too many situations where it is a damage decrease.

I see a lot of comments here talking about "confusing the enemy" with this glyph or even Mirror Images in general. I would just like to say that if you are fighting even halfway-competent players, this NEVER works. Mirror images are great because it drops target and
applies a constant slow for 30 seconds.
This glyph removes the key functionality of an already highly situational spell.
Using this glyph in PvP is never a good idea. That is all.

Stupid coding on the images. When you use this spell at the beginning of a fight they just stand like morons doing nothing. Mirror-Image, Lifeblood, Pyroblast - terrible. The problem is that in leveling dungeons crap dies so fast that "waiting" to cast them after PB leaves you with 1.5 sec of doing nothing. Either way you do it, you're screwed.

Obviously, no frost mage should have this. If you do have it, inscribe it in your other spec, whichever one you chose in dual spec.

Tested as a Fire Mage:
First time without glyph: 1225.2 dps, 37209 damage
Second time without glyph: 1221.8 dps, 37228 damage
First time with glyph: 1270.7 dps, 37282 damage
Second time with glyph: 1338.1 dps, 39220 damage
Third time with glyph: 1285.2 dps, 37745 damage
Fourth time with glyph: 1289.7 dps, 37841 damage
Seems like Fireball does a little more damage. It's not a lot of data though.

Doesn't even affect school mechanics in the places where they still exist. In AQ10 and AQ40, mobs reflect my images' fireballs and arcane blasts when they have the frost reflect buff, but not when they have the fire or arcane reflect buff.

I just tested this glyph quickly on a raiding dummy with my Arcane mage and it was a significant improvement over being unglyphed.
My mirror images did about 60k (damage not dps) during a burn phase without the glyph. With the glyph my images, even though they went oom they still did 90k (damage not dps) during the same burn rotation.
I don't know whether this massive difference compared to earlier tests is due to patching, my burn rotation or something else.

Ok, the results of my testing in 5.2.
No real difference. I tested three times with the glyph, three times without, and three times with the glyph and a maintained four stack of
Arcane Charge
.
The damage range was within 8k from lowest to highest, in all the tests (In my gear, it was from 109k to 117k, so less than 10% difference. Probably some extra crits on the high end). They don't benefit from arcane charge at all. They do benefit from time warp, which is not really surprising.
Personally, I'm going to leave it unglyphed so the images' frostbolts apply the slowing effect.
And for anyone who might be looking for it, alter time does not reset their cooldown.

Although this is classified as a minor glyph, today I learned it through Northrend Inscription Research. This was the last minor glyph that my toon had yet to learn and I was wasting effort by doing Minor Inscription Research for the past week.
