, Fire has always been one of the most deadly schools of magic in World of Warcraft. Fire Mage has always been known for its offensive focus, high damage, and cleave in the form of

Fire Mage is a cloth-wearing caster damage dealer and one of a handful of ranged caster specializations in World of Warcraft that focuses on cleave rather than spread damage over time. It is a very high burst playstyle, as most of your damage comes during your

. Outside of cooldowns, the playstyle revolves around its stable flow of generating

Fire Mage Changes in Midnight
The biggest change to Fire is that it is no longer bound to constant uptime. Burst is back, and
炎爆術
actually does damage. Fire Mage gameplay in Midnight Pre-patch should still be familiar to veterans, despite many pruned abilities and changes to talents. Here are the big changes from the War Within to Midnight prepatch:
Removed Abilities

Fire Mage Hero Talents: Sunfury and Frostfire
For Hero Talents, Fire Mages are able to pick between Sunfury and Frostfire.
Sunfury adds a lot of visual flavor to Mage. Sunfury Fire Mages generate
魔焰球體
and summon

es to consume these spheres and deal damage with powerful Arcane and Fire spells. They also call down storms of

s when consuming the buff from generating these spheres via

Frostfire also adds visual flavor to Fire Mage by fusing Fire and Frost magic to burn and freeze their enemies with

. Many of Fire's spells also gain a frosty ride-along with talents like

necessary. Frostfire comes with a lot of other passive damage increases and minor spell improvements.
Talent Builds
Playing a Fire Mage in
Fire Mage does not have a strict rotation and instead works off of a priority list. That means you will often be reacting based on whether one of your spells scores a critical hit or on which spells are available.
Convert and Spend Hot Streak:
Critical strikes generate

and

, spend these on
炎爆術
(or
烈焰風暴
in AoE). Use
火焰衝擊
to convert Heating up into Hot Streak.
Combustion is Key:
燃灼
makes all spells guaranteed Critical Strikes, supercharging Hot Streak generation. This spell can be cast while casting, so try to always activate it at the end of a cast.
Don't Waste Time:
Sitting on capped Fire Blast charges, or using them when you already have Hot Streak up is wasteful. Try to make full use of cooldowns and buffs.
Always be casting.
Gearing an Fire Mage in
As a rough guideline, follow the stat priority of:
Haste >= Mastery > Versatility >> Critical Strike
. Don't neglect the value of
Intellect
as a substantial increase in item level is generally worth it compared to optimized stats. It is always recommended that you use
Raidbots
to sim your own character since every gear/talent profile has different implications for which secondaries are optimal. Check our

Best-in-Slot Gear
What Professions are Best for Fire Mage?
Compared to previous expansions, professions in provide minimal benefits towards the performance of your spec. This means that Fire Mage players can choose any profession according to personal preference. You might consider
Tailoring
to craft your own armor, as many profession items can be very close to your
Best in Slot gear
. On the other hand, you may opt for Alchemy to craft consumables or Enchanting to enchant gear without relying on the Auction House.

Professions in Midnight
What Race is Best for Fire Mage?
Both Horde and Alliance Fire Mages can be any race.
You can play whatever race you like. Some races have more damage than others, but the differences are minimal. At most, we are talking a 2% damage difference from best to worst. Most races are within less than 1% damage. Utility and convenience from racials can easily make up for this difference for most players. Remember, liking how your character looks is a confidence boost and mental damage increase!
The damage gain of races can change with each patch. Here are the current winners:

Phoenix's flame was a bad choice for the fire mage due to long recharge and low dmg considering it being the main dmg ability for Fire mage ! the fact that they would nerf it even further and losing 1 fire blast charge to take phoenix flame , means the class is further nerfed... so thanks to blizzard for keep nerfing the one iconic spec for blood elven mages !

I've mained Fire for the entirety of Legion.
The spec feels kind of bland right now with a lesser version of combustion.
Talent choices have become more situational and it should be very interesting as raid and m+ will give different playstyles.
Plus that mages will be very valuable in m+ with spellsteal. There's a lot of buffs to steal and build your combustions around.
BFA starts out with a simpled down rotation, but most certainly add a lot of good stuff along the expansion.
I have no doubt that the complexity will return.

Does the DOT on Rank 2 Pyroblast do double damage if your Pyro critically strikes, like during a Combustion window or with taking Firestarter? Can't find any info on it

Please stop writing for Fire if you are not going to play the class. You have taken major fire spells away from Fire mages and that needs to stop. So if Preheat wants to write about Arcane or Frost go right ahead. Leave Fire mage alone.

I'm curious, (and I apologize if I'm wording this rudely. It's not my intention.) Are you still playing a Fire Mage? Only reason I ask is in your section on how to play a Fire Mage you suggest casting

. It's not in my spell book, it's not in the talent tree. I get

after getting two critical strikes in a row which does what

back to back. Just as long as I get two critical strikes in a row with them. That's the most common way for me to get

. Occasionally I can get

by casting

and then

or
鳳凰之炎
. But I don't think I've ever gotten
焦炎之痕
after casting two or more
火球術
in a row. I can't swear to it, but I think

was removed from the game. Again, I'm level 65 and it's not in my spell book nor in the talent tree. I just started playing a Fire Mage in 10.1.5 so Blizz may have changed the way that works this patch. This way seems like a lot easier to work as a new player. I can get
焦炎之痕
with a couple different combinations. When one way is on cool down, the other is just getting off or is off cool down so I'm constantly casting and getting the crits that make
炎爆術
or
火焰衝擊
instant cast.

I just started playing this yesterday so, I really love having all this knowledge at my finger tips. I also figured out that I was underutilizing Fire Blast, even though I didn't have that issue with the other specs.
I'm a little confused about the race recommendation. I completely understand making a Troll Mage since they have more racial bonuses than the most popular choice. A Tauren, though? I played one as Arcane and War Stomp was only helpful until level 15.

Sadly, this guide doesn't explain racial choices at all, but the Arcane and Frost guides do. Tauren and Dwarf are recommended b/c both get a 2% increased Crit Dmg racial buff, which interacts particularly well with Frost's
Shatter
.
However, Mechagnome's
Combat Analysis
racial was finally fixed in DF, making it scale to level 70, apparently making it the best DPS racial for mages (or any DPS class Mechagnomes can play).
Also, Dark Iron Dwarf probably has the best burst racial with
Fireblood
, which combined with its debuff clear, makes it best for PvP. Also, honorable mention to Night Elf for
Shadowmeld
, which gives mages 2x target dropping abilities on 2m cd's (assuming you also take Greater Invis talent), also useful in PvP.

While i understand that secondaries can vary based on builds, the fact that every build in this list has different priorities is a little bit much, The idea of regemming and/or carrying multiple sets if i want to swap talent builds, and needing like 3 sets is way too much. Can we simplify this just a tad? i can see swapping a few pieces for ST vs AOE, or raid vs m+, but this guide will require 3 or 4 different gearing set ups to maximize secondaries for all the builds

I love how the Builds for M+ keep changing from a copy of the raid talents back to a meteor build, then back to raid build and now a meteor build again. And all that in the span of 2 weeks.
