Garrison Invasions are challenges in your Garrison that allow you to defeat attacking enemies for rewards.
They can be completed solo but you are encouraged to bring your friends because the rewards are greater if you perform better.
Your first invasion comes early on Shadowmoon Valley and Frostfire Ridge with a Tier 2 Garrison--midway through questing, a player's Garrison will be attacked either by a Thunderlord or Shadowmoon force. This is not available with a Tier 3 Garrison but it is also not considered a "real" invasion.

There are 6 types of invasion:
Ogre
Shadow Concul
Shadowmoon
Botani
Goren
Iron Horde

HOW TO TRIGGER AN INVASION
When you kill level 100 mobs (in the areas for Apexis Crystal Quests), you have a chance that the enemies will prepare to attack your garrison in retaliation. At this point, your commander by the Town Hall will have a quest for you.

In order to trigger an invasion, you will need to kill mobs at following locations:

Note that you need to kill approx 500 mobs, and you can not be in the raid group. Party is allowed.
Once you kill enough of them, you will get notification at your minimap, where you can see mission status. There will also be big yellow exclamation mark there, pretty easy to spot. Once you spot it, head back to your garrison and you will be able to take quest from Sergeant Crowler (A) or Sergeant Grimjaw (H).

Invasion Stages
The invasion has the following stages:
Invasion - Follow the sergeant
Assault - defeat the assault.
The holdout - endure the assault. This part is timed for ~8 minutes.
The calm - go to the town center
Final stage - kill a boss

During the assault, multiple enemy packs spawn in your Garrison.The following unusual things can happen as well:
The enemy assaults a Garrison building—attack them to interrupt the cast.
A terrified townsfolk runs out of safety. They are marked with a green arrow over their head and you run up to them to move them away.
An infiltrator from the opposite faction is in your Garrison. These have a hefty bit of HP.

Invasion Points
During the invasion, you gain points via the following ways:
Killing enemies—trickier ones give more points.
Saving terrified townsfolk.
Killing spies.
Keeping your buildings intact.
Keeping your defenders alive.
Killing the final boss.
When the invasion is complete, points are added for your buildings and defenders.

You need 300 points for Bronze, 600 for Silver, and 1000 for Gold.

Invasion rewards
Silver and bronze rankings rewards only apexis crystals, but if you managed to get gold reward you will get Invader's Forgotten Treasure which can contain 645 items (They can be warforged 651) and one of 4 mounts.
Note that you can get each bag just once per week, yet you will receive apexis each time you do it.

Be sure you and your friends who have a Barracks use a Bodyguard. They'll help you output more damage, and you'll gain Follower Rep to boot!

And if it's your Garrison, be sure to grab your strongest Follower to go on Patrol with you.

Here is my Macro for knowing whether or not you have received the Bronze, Silver ,Gold &/or Platinum rewards from doing a garrison invasion for the week.

Expanding on the Invasions at Level 120. Credit to the original post by Sergijus, I am merely going to grab parts from it and update them for BfA.

HOW TO TRIGGER AN INVASION -- No change to Sergijus post currently.
Invasion Stages -- Major Change is that the NPCs such as the guards and 克羅勒士官 will be level 120. Therefore nearly one hit most mobs in the invasions. The mini-bosses that spawn during the invasion will take around 3-5 total hits from the NPCs to kill them.
Invasion Points -- No change to Sergijus post currently.
Point Levels -- 300 for Bronze, 600 for Silver, 1000 for Gold & 1300 for Platinum.
Invasion Rewards -- Bronze rewards 入侵者遺棄的袋子, Silver rewards 入侵者受損的儲物包, Gold rewards 入侵者遺忘的財寶 & Platinum rewards 潰敗入侵者的寶箱. For example, getting Gold will reward you the bags for Bronze, Silver & Gold. You will only get these bags for the first invasion you complete each week. The mounts are possible drops from both of the Gold & Platinum bags. So you can get up to 2 chances per week to get them.

*For those asking, the mounts that drop from the Gold & Platinum bags are: 影皮珠齒伊萊克, 濃煙恐狼, 鋼喉 & 巨大的凍鼻野豬.

In regards to the first few comments about getting credit for only the first invasion each week, I can confirm this as of 8.1.5. I submitted a GM ticket. The response I got, which is below, basically asks me to try again and submit a Bug Report if it repeats. Here is the response from the GM (minus their name and my info, of course):

In my research, I was able to verify that there are no known issues with the achievement at the moment. Even with this achievement being for older content, I'm afraid we are not really able to provide direct hints when it comes to completing the criteria necessary. In this case, I would recommend to try and complete another Shadowmoon invasion to see if credit is granted.

If you feel like this is not working correctly, submit a bug report using the in-game bug report feature to have this sent up to the development team directly so they can look into it from their end.

I have submitted a bug report so until we get word if it is intended or is fixed, its based on a weekly thing. Plan on taking at least 6 weeks to complete achievement.

I cannot for the life of me get a gold rating or better for iron horde. im playing alliance, not sure if that is a factor. there seem to be very few mobs that spawn and a lot of them are on the walls, in trees totally disengaged until i go fly right to them. im going to try to complete it with a friend maybe more will spawn. ive wasted my mount potential cache drops a few weeks in a row now trying to get iron horde for this achievement.
