Ashenvale is one of the first contested zones new players on PvP servers will come across(on kalimdor), levels of the mobs range from about 18 to 25.
The feel of the zone is all night elf environment, a lush forest and even a few moonwells scattered through the zone. Tailors can use moonwells to turn felcloth into mooncloth.

This place is good for leveling for low level Night Elf characters. It is also good as a central hub to many places of interest. such as Darkshore that allows access to Eastern Kingdoms, Warsong Gulch which allows you to fight Horde from the Barrens in your level, Felwood for when you are much higher level and Azshara which is also good for high level grinding and Azshara offers more quests than Felwood.

Good place to quest but be ready for some hardcore running, these quests have you all over the place, for horde and alliance. Great place for PvP too because it attracts lots of horde to the area.

Night elf lowbies usually level here, if not Wetlands, and a quest sends Horde lowbies to Ashenvale. Astranaar and Splintertree are subject to frequent raids.

to be fair this is more of an allience zone allthough its labeled as contested there are allience npcs dotted around everywhere where as almost all of the horde npcs are confined to theyre outposts allthough i must admit its anoying having to avoid horde npcs patroling the roads when im playing on my dreanie (why did blizzard make this name so hard 2 spell)

There is a mistake on map. Sentinel Melyria Frostshadow and Illiyana are in Forest of Song not at shrine !. Before changing u can check it (if u dont trust me ^^)

Coming in from Darkshore (or Bloodmyst), you'll gradually work your way East while making a few treks to Stonetalon Mountains soon after you hit Astranaar (in fact most of the Stonetalon alliance quests complement Astranaar's); and finally landing in Forest Song in your late 20s.

Mobs get progressively harder from West to East, until about Ravenwood Retreat (due to the Horde enterance being to the south) and are strongest at the borders of Azshara and Felwood.

It's worth noting that if you're Alliance and come here fresh from a level 10-20 zone, most of the chains will lead to an orange or red quest; keeping this in mind for optimal speed. You'll hit about 22-24 when you run out of yellow/green quests go elsewhere to level and later come back in your mid to upper twenties when you come back.

I strongly recommend going to the Eastern Kingdoms and complete as much of Redridge Mountains and Duskwood as possible, this will prevent the need to grind for hours in Ashenvale and will also round out your Stormwind reputation. There should be enough quests to make the red quests go yellow in Ashenvale and in Stonetalon Mountains.

A few other tips. To get to Stonetalon Mountains go through Talondeep Path. The tunnel itself is free of mobs, though there will be some spiders waiting for you at the other end.

The flight path to Azshara is easy to pick up from here. Just take the road east out of Ashenvale, it's just over the border and there are no hostile mobs to deal with.

The flight path to Emerald Sanctuary in Felwood is a little more difficult for lower levels. You will aggro some hostile beasts and even when you make it to Emerald Sanctuary, the NPC's there won't help you to kill them.

You might want to bring a friend when you come here on a PvP server, you are bound to run into a Horde/Alliance ready for PvP because the Warsong Gulch Battlemasters are near by and there might be a twink.

Ashenvale is home to the instance named Blackfathom Deeps.

It's located north west on the Zoram'gar strand (the coast completely west of Ashenvale on your map), underneath a temple-like place. Just south of the strand is the horde outpost, and on the road east you will come to Astranaar. So horde and alliance have an easy way to get there.

A total of 6 bosses, 3 optional. Most drops require level 20-24. Id say the level requirement of the group should be about the same as Shadowfang Keep.

Fun instance; doable more than once for its ease and loots. If you haven't gone there yet, I recommend doing so.

I've been playing this game for about two years now and just found a buried green statue its head is about the size of a house and its wielding somthing but its buried up to the neck in the ground....i had to leave a post asking what this is. Coords are ~ (31, 60) i found it buy going from the flight path and heading south while omw to find the talondeep path.....what is this thing?
all i know is that its a Night Elf (female)

Make sure to kill 3 named mobs in this area that count towards the achievement. Each drops an item that starts a quest.

I know this probably also happens in Astranaar, but seeing as I play mostly Horde, it's frustrating when Alliance camp Splintertree, killing every NPC and questgiver, wait for them to respawn, and do it again. And seeing as there's only one way in and out of the post, you may not be able to leave for awhile without being killed on a PvP server. Like I said, I know the same probably happens in Astranaar, but this area seems more aimed toward the Alliance, and higher-level Alliance at that. I hate seeing "Splintertree Post is under attack!". Over and over and over...

Forest Song is NE Ashenvale, keep following the road to NE when you can head south toward Barrens and its there on the left.

Dor'Danil Barrow Den is kinda SE but not too far, you should see 4 Forsaken guarding a little camp with bottles - from there you should see the barrow den. That place is quite hard to solo at the recommended level btw - i did it as a 29 rogue with a higher level priest as backup.

I've got a question about the level in Ashenvale and Stonetalon Mountains. I'm currently in Darkshore, level 18 hunter, and fed up with this zone. I'd like to go to a new zone asap, but I don't know if the quests in Ashenvale are too hard for my character. Is it better to go to Stonetalon first?

Blizzard still has BFD listed in Northern Darkshore. They haven't placed the acutal instance where it is in Ashenvale. I had played this game on some of my friends accounts a while ago, and I just recently finally got a copy of the game myself and was like, "Isn't BFD in Ashenvale". I hope they did a revamp for the Expansion pack. I don't have that yet some I'm not sure if they revamped the map.

It was still called Blackfathom Deeps in Archemonde. I am not sure what is meant by the reference to 'Northern Zoram Strand' but I found Blackfathom Deeps no prob....is N.Z.S. the instance that used to be there or what?

Blizzard originally ment to put BFD in Darkshore, but instead changed it to the Zoram Strand in Ashenvale. The old entrance can still be found in the northern ruins in Darkshore (I suggest going because there is a lvl 19 rare mob that appears and drops a rare ring) the instance is gone but the building is still there. If you look at the game manual (not the computer version) from the older copies of the game it still shows BFD in this area.

I think this is one of the most contested areas when it comes to PvP'ing for the first time (for those wise enough to not to flag themselves while in their home territory). The Horde has a small outpost located in the southern part & the Alliance has a quest in the northern part (along with the entrance to the Blackfathom Deeps instance). This means that there's usually a few level mid-20's people hanging around.

I ran into a mid-20's gnome mage with my 25 Orc hunter/25 raptor. I was killing naga on my way to BFD, waved at the mage, and he fired on me. His mistake:) He sheeped me a couple of times and blinked around, but I nailed him. Is waving considered rude? Every time I do, I get attacked;)

Never mind I found it. It is to the Northwest of Astranaar, just west of the first set of mts you come across to the left of the road as you're heading north.

I found this place on February 15th 2005, its awesome, there are lvl 62 Elites in packs guarding the area along with a 62 Elite Dragon called Phantim, what they are guarding is amazing, its another Portal, you get past all them, then a little ways back is a stone ramp up, at the top is a massive Portal I believe like that of the Dark Portal. Guarding this portal is another dragon called Dreamwalker, I just wonder what Blizzard has in store for us with these portals ;P just figured I would share with everyone, later and you better go up there either in spirit form, or be a lvl 60 Rogue ;P

There are 4 portals I know of: Duskwood, Hinterlands, Blasted lands and Ashenvale. Blasted lands host the Dark Portal, while all the other three should take you to the Emerald Dream. Where Ysera the green is.

There is another portal leading to the emerald dream in feralas. Its south of desolace, then east. Im guessing each portal is guarded by a patrolled emerald dragon and actually guarded by another. DONT ATTEMPT TO TAKE ALONE!

I went there as my 30 druid and got stomped of course. But a sheer act of detrmination (and a facination with dragonkin) i died/respawned closer and closer to the area till i got next to Dreamwalker. I tried running beeline into the portal but nothing happened and i got brutally slaughtered (3927 dmg).

makes me think Blizzard may be thinking expansion pack. That would be sweet.

I found these two floating daggers at the top of the hill with huts and sucubus-like demons around them. The wierd thign is they dont do anything, like they dont attack you when you approach. Heres a picture.

Has anyone found anything down here? Or perhaps quests that send players here? So far all we have found is Diathorus, a level 34 named demon who doesn't drop anything but copper.

I think the giant floating swords are those of Mannaroth who was killed by Grom Hellscream. They're really cool if you've managed to get to them. Just watch out for the pack of legion hounds and you'll be fine. Oh and if you're lvl 30+

The moonwell is near a Dryad, just northwest of Raynewood Retreat. You have to go around a little indention into the mountains though. Just keep moving north and west along the mountains until you reach a little path to the north, follow that path.

LMAO amazes me how ppl can be so confusing in describing locations. Yes Moonwell is NE of Astraanaar, but isn't it just as easy to say its east of Iris lake?..namely looking at the map the bit of iris lake that has the island in the middle. Easiest way for me was to follow the road from Astranaar then just as u pass the southern tip of Iris lake, if you look to your left you will see a large open area ..go that way past all the bears until you see the lamps in the ground, follow the lamps and it takes you directly to the NPC at Moonwell

Ok I just read all the posts about where the wells are....so I ran around and took down the coordinates of my position while I was standing in the middle of the wells.

Raynewood, there is a well there, and yes there is a 40th lvl Dryad right in front of the well. 59,59
to get there run up the road that is east of Raynewood on the map, take your first right and basically make a uturn around the mountian you will then see a lit path with some lvl 20+ mobs.

Bloodtooth Camp, I did not see anything guarding this one. 60,72

Oh and if you are making mooncloth, don't be a dork like me and go all the way there to find out you have like 5 hours left until you can make more LMAO :)

Night Run is immidately east of Raynewood Retreat and directly west of Satyrnaar on a small mountainous peninsula that can only be reached from the north by the mountains on either side.

Going to the Veiled Sea from the south end of the Zoram Strand you can find quite a few secluded spots which are creature-free, allowing decent mid-level fishing without interruptions.

A couple of notes for newcomers.
While visually stunning and beautiful, Ashenvale is a nightmare to navigate. The place is huge, and to go from A to B you are pretty much forced to follow the road, because the landscape is dotted with impassable hills, trees, boulders or mountains: don't try to take shortcuts, you risk having to backtrack back to where you started and waste a lot of time.

The questline "Raene's Cleansing" for Alliance is long (9 steps!) and convoluted, and will require to run from one corner to the other of the zone: in light of what I just wrote, it will be annoying and time-consuming. Oftentimes you will have just vague hints on where you should go and what you should do to complete the quest objectives ("The final piece of the rod I have no idea where they hid it. All I can tell you is to follow the road that leads towards the Barrens. The druids were killed recently...").

In short, Ashenvale will have you swear.
