Good places to use SW: Death in PvE:

-Regular mobs after the tank gets threat. It doesn't matter if you take the damage -- vampirics take care of it and then some.
-Finishing move in lesser 5-mans to snag a spirit tap. It is tricky to do, but you'll get the hang of it and eventually be pretty good at procing tap when you want it.

Bad places to use SW: Death in PvE:

-Mobs that absorb damage via a shield. No damage is reflected, but it is a somewhat major cooldown and it was wasted.
-Mobs that reflect spell damage (this is the big one). If SW: Death is reflected to you, you will take the initial hit/crit from it TIMES 2 since you arent ever killed by your own SW: Death (unless of course you are).
-Mobs that take additional damage when something happens (ie. Curator). One poorly-timed SW: Death crit during curator's evocate will quite literally one-shot you with the backlash!

The backlash from this spell (if death doesn't kill the target) is decreased by an appropriate percentage using the Spell Warding talent in the Holy tree.

the pally healers in my own raiding guild fear me becuase off this move, i give them mana with VT so they dont cmplain too move about me being an $%^&*!@ with this thing in kara

there are a few uses for this spell...
one is to put warriors into combat so they can't charge ya for the rage.
another is to keep prayer of mending going. As a Shadow Priest in BGs I always put prayer of mending on myself before switching to shadow, then I've got a free shadow word: death and the prayer will bounce around a while.
This spell can be absolutely deadly when used by a shadow priest... as long as you have Vampric embrace up, don't worry so much about the damage you'll take except in special circumstances. Your +shadow damage items will make it more than worth the damage you take, then VE your life back!

don't use this on mobs that spell reflect.. it will hit you with the initial reflect.. and it won't kill you.. so you get the backlash too.. critted a spell reflected mob for 3600 the other day and nearly 1-shotted myself.

This is also a nice skill for Disc priests to use in Arena. On my lock, I often call out when an opponent is very low so he can (hopefully) Mind Blast > SW:D him before the healer gets a chance to reverse all the work we've done. The extra little burst is often enough to seal the deal and ensure our victory.

Surprised this was not mentioned earlier.
This spell after hitting the target has about 1 second of "grace time" during which the target can die from your other damage sources and you will still not suffer its reflect damage.
Easily seen when you SWDeath a target and it survives at very minimal health, but it dies a split second later from something else you do.
Also very useful spell for securing Spirit Tap buff in dungeons, even as a healer.
