This seems to have the highest base damage of all shadow damaging abilities (those that deal their damage instantly, not DoTs). Though it has higher base damage, its casting time is only 1.5 seconds so it receives a lower +spell damage bonus... Does anyone know if if there were two players, a priest and a warlock, and both had, say, +700 to spell damage, keeping in mind their respective talents (eg. Shadow Priest has +5% misery +10% darkness +15 shadow weaving +15% shadowform)...

Which would have the higher damage, the priest casting this, and the warlock casting shadowbolt?

ok, to clear things up...
i have a level 67 shadow priest, AND a level 67 warlock. warlock is demon specced with +/- 400 damage and priest has +/- 400 as well, my shadowbolts hit for around 1075 average, and mind blast hits for around 1025 base. my MB crits are higher, but my SB crits are more often. both very powerful, but in a raid, MB crits can pull a mob straight off a tank faster than SB (spell text reads, causes high amount of threat).. so you gotta be a lil more careful with the shadow priest.

Ridlin. I don't recommend it because children are overdiagnosed but when I look at posts like this I suggest you take it with a needle. Plus the extra threat has lasted a while anyway so give em a break.

I wonder how much more the threat was initially anyway? An experiment would be awesome to see where it stands now.

believe it or not priest with say 800 spell dmg is highest dps class in the game now

i EASy outdps every caster, melee in Karazan raid in shadow spec, while regenerating every healer in my party with mana (usually i get 3 paladins in my group + MT)

i can do 7-10k dmg in under 10 sec easy,

VT>SWP>MB followed my shadow word death + MF (yes i use it even tho it does dmg to me, i get healed by VE after few sec anyway)

this does not include crits + pet (shadowfiend) + trinkets

i dont understand why there rvery few priests around they so kick ass. also priest is MUCH more interactive than any other caster

this spell pisses me off because there are so many levels for it...waste of gold. make less levels for it and just have each give higher damage. and the highest base damage spell priest gets only does 750...should do much more.

I love casting this spell and watching it crit, but IMO it needs a serious review by Blizz. First off, we have spent alot of gold buying all 11 ranks, only to have it's max damage cap out at less than 750...weak. Secondly, in order to increase its effectiveness a shadow priest has to spend 5 talent points to decrease its cooldown by 2.5 seconds (it still has a 5.5 sec cooldown AFTER spending the 5 points). Finally, the shadow priest is likely to spend ANOTHER 5 points on the talent which increases its critical strike chance by 15%. This boost is really nice and I definitely see mind blast crit more often than not. However, the crits are relatively weak compared to the huge crits that mages, hunters, rogues, and feral druids get on me all the time. The highest I've ever seen my MB crit for is around 2000 dmg, and that is with all 5 shadow weaving stacked + shadowform + 5 points in Darkness talent + roughly 400 spell dmg. Considering that this is the main offensive spell of shadow priests (not including dots and mind flay, which is a different story), I think it should hit much harder, especially considering all the points and gold we must spend to make it hit as hard as it does now. A talent category that increases its critical strike dmg bonus would be great.

None of the spells follow 'normal' coefficients, 59% of spell damage is not unusual for any spell, you cant say that a spell is 3 second cast, so the coefficient in that formula is exactly 3, otherwise pyroblast would have a coefficient of 6, shadowbolt 3, and this is not the case. And for the record, this spell does more damage than shadowbolt with equal spell damage, the balance is the cooldown.

lol the greatest crit (done by a player) ive seen was done by a AFF LOCK - crit me for 6.5K DMG WHEN I DISPELLED UNSTABLE AFFLICTION! WOWWOWOWOWOOWOWOWOWOWOW

If this crits, coupled with a shadow word: death crit afterwards, it represents a priest's highest burst damage potential (DPS). With shadow weaving stacked and all that, my MB could crit for about 2.4k and death for 2.1k. Terrific burst for only 1.5 seconds of casting time, but it is not repeatable.

Repeatable burst on a priest is done using smite, SoL and PI in the holy school. With PI on you, you can manage a 2.1k smite crit followed by a 1.3k non-crit, all for the cost of one smite and in 2s of casting time. Without PI, I got 1.7k crits and 1k non-crits. Since SoL doesn't cost anything anymore, it is more mana efficient than MB/SWD (not taking into account vampirics; too lazy). However, since it is 2s of casting, DPS is lower than MB/SWD. The main difference is that this type of burst is repeatable as often as you'd like/can.

In the upcoming patch +healing gear will give you .25 spell damage per 1pt or healing.

This means Priest, Shaman, Paladin and Druid will benifit more from +healing and less from spell damage gear (greedy Mages and Warlocks rejoice).

Holy Paladins will be DPS capable and once and for all be accepted as Front Line Healers.
Perhaps Shamans also =)

So +2000 Healing also gives + 500 Spell Damage
and +1000 Spell damage may give up to +1000 healing
