These were buffed with the latest 2.0.7 patch:

+8 Intelligence (instead of 0)
spell hit rating +22 (instead of 27)
spell crit rating +26 (instead of 28)
damage +46 (instead of 33)

=>

+8 Intelligence
-5 spell hit rating
-2 critical strike rating
+13 spell damage (!!)

It does proc on warlock dots but not the ticks only when you cast the dot it can proc

For fireball 5% proc that lasts for 10 seconds is like having the +damage active 0.05*3 % of the time. So the set bonus is worth 13.8 spell damage with fireball and double that with arcane blast or scorch spammage.
Also this set is by far the best caster DPS set available. Even T5 headpiece is only worth wearing with the 5% chance to cast next spell in 1/2 time, and even then due to the requirement of the gem the DPS you're going to lose by using more purple (or blue) gems than orange (or yellow) gems is going to make the T5 headpiece just not good enough at least if you're a tailor for the set bonus. I mathed T5 to be worth about 7 more spell damage with the meta compared to spellstrike hood assuming it makes you lose the set bonus which is worth 13.8 damage, while every item that I would see myself using would have a yellow socket for every blue socket so if you get the socket bonus they cancel eachother, and if you give up the socket bonus you should be putting all red gems anyway which again does nothing to enable the meta gem. And with any other meta gem T4/5 headpieces plain suck compared to spellstrike.

Does the set bonus proc with DoTs? Cause if it doesn't having this set with my lock has almost no reason except direct/semidirect spells (shadowbolt, shadowburn, immolate... etc)

Maybe I'm just stupid, but I always get confused about items like this, so forgive the dumb question.

The tooltip says that it requires tailoring (350). Does that just mean that it must be crafted by a tailor or that you need to be a tailor to wear it?

However, you can (if you have the mats and the money for a nether) get these as soon as you hit 70, whereas it will take quite a while (months, probably) before you have a chance to get the Trial-Fire trousers.

I'm trying to upgrade my gear as affliction/destruction warlock, i've the spellstrike set full gemmed with +9dmg for maximize that stat

i've found Hood of Hexing from Malacrass being an upgrade over spellstrike cowl; so i would like to throw away the spellstrike pants and replace them with something better, but i don't see Trial-Fire Trousers as an upgrade to that.

This is because i'm gonna lose 22+hit and 26+crit if i gem the TFTrousers with 3x+9dmg gems, gaining a grand total of 3 (!!!!) +dmg; i'm not calculating the stamina/int cause those items are mainly used for raiding, and anyway i'm not in need of those stats...

...so next upgrade is in BT? Or i am missing something?

I noted that on the Thottbot site under the 'Part of Spellstrike Infusion set' that, "These bonuses only apply if the wearer has 350 Tailoring." Have any non-tailors received the set bonus? Please confirm - Thanks

1st of all YES you need 350 tailoring to get the set bonus
2nd of all the proc rate is quite good around 5-8% and also can be renewed
this set is very worth it not only for the proc but the raw stats on it are
invaluable for any caster

Hodge (H) can make these pants on Windrunner. The main problem is the primal nether, which is bind on pick up.
