Protection Warrior Tank Phase 1 Best in Slot (BiS) - TBC Classic

Welcome to Wowhead's Best in Slot Gear list from Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, and Magtheridon's Lair for Protection Warrior Tank in The Burning Crusade Classic. This guide will list the recommended gear for Protection Warrior Tank to acquire while they progress on the first few raids in The Burning Crusade Classic, and contains gear sourced from Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, Magtheridon's Lair, heroic dungeons, early PvP grinding, professions, BoE World Drops, and reputations.
We have created many different best-in-slot lists, including a pre-raid list, containing gear you can obtain without doing any raid content.
Protection Warrior Tank Best in Slot Guides
Best In Slot Gear for Protection Warrior Tank in Phase 1
Gearing your Protection Warrior in TBCC highly depends on your raiding environment. Some guilds may require a
higher threat ceiling
to withstand the pressure from high-performing damage dealers, while other guilds may encourage erring on the side of caution and focusing solely on
survival
. Most guilds will require a little bit of both, and it is up to each tank to decide on the
balance
between threat and mitigation they want to achieve based on their experience within their group and for different encounters.
For this reason, I have made a selection of the most balanced and budget-efficient items for each slot as well as a threat and a mitigation-oriented alternative when applicable.
It is also important to note that gearing as a Protection Warrior in TBCC requires constant adjustments to maintain your crit immunity as you upgrade your gear, and you may lose Defense or Resilience rating in some slots. Make sure you keep some item alternatives to mix and match your stats and meet your goals for survival and threat.
The Protection Warrior Tier 4 set

25% chance to gain a 200 damage absorption shield after a parry is a negligible amount of damage mitigation.

increasing the damage of your next ability by 10% after using Revenge yields very little threat because this next spell is always going to be Devastate or Heroic Strike, abilities with low base damage.
For this reason, we are going to focus on individual items for each slot instead of trying to activate any of the T4 bonuses specifically with worse items.

Should Protection Warrior Tank Choose Aldor or Scryer for BiS in TBC Classic Phase 1?
Choosing between

determines which shoulders inscription you can access upon reaching exalted, which are basically equal for either side. But more importantly, your choice will affect the proc of your

necklaces in Phase 5, which should have a greater influence on your decision.
The Inscriptions
Mathematically speaking, the Aldor's inscription

totals slightly more raw avoidance at 1.30% avoidance, while the Scryers'

provides 1.28% avoidance. This minuscule difference, at the scale of your entire gear set, is only a 0.06% difference in total mitigation value, which is to say negligible and irrelevant.
Math aside, it is worth mentioning that more defense can help facilitate your gearing process early on in Phase 1. This can be a good argument for choosing the Scryers, as you replace a lot of gear fast and have to adjust your crit immunity constantly.
The Necklace
The

, available in Phase 5 once you are exalted with this new faction, comes in two versions based on your chosen Shattrath faction. The Aldor version has a +100 dodge rating proc (+5.28% dodge) and the Scryers version has a +100 expertise rating proc (-6.25% dodge/parry).
While the Aldor necklace may look like the more survival-oriented choice at first glance, the Scryers version is in fact both the best of the two for threat by a landslide but also for damage mitigation thanks to the additional expertise reducing your chances to parry haste bosses, thus resulting in higher survivability than the dodge proc.
In conclusion
, the Scryers is the obvious choice for a Warrior Tank since it offers the best shoulders inscription and the best necklace in Phase 5. Additionally, it also offers exclusive
Blacksmithing
plans that can save you a lot of gold when leveling that profession. And as a final bonus, it's also generally the less expensive faction of the two to max out, thanks to its lower popularity.

Best in Slot Head Armor for Protection Warrior in TBC Classic Phase 1
Warbringer Greathelm
, the Tier 4 Greathelm is a very well itemized piece for mitigation, but also comes with a moderate amount of threat in the form of agility and block value. While this may not be the most offensive choice, it is definitely the highest overall value helm for phase 1. However, there are several good mitigation-oriented alternatives for this slot, so do not stress about acquiring a T4 helm token immediately. If you are looking for more threat in this slot, the Tier 4
Battle-Helm
— the Fury version — is a good choice once your guild is giving away spare T4 helm tokens.
If you are into Arenas or want to go the extra mile, the
Gladiator's Plate Helm
is the best threat-oriented helmet available. Especially when paired with the shoulders or the chestpiece to activate the 2p set bonus

Warbringer Shoulderplates
the Tier 4
Fury
shoulders are the highest value item in this slot for two reasons. First, it comes with a great selection of stats for a tank as well as some hit rating, which is rare and valuable on your gear as a Protection Warrior. And second, the Tier 4 Protection alternative
Warbringer Shoulderguards
is a very one-dimensional item with close to no threat value.
In this slot, the Season 1 Arena shoulders are another excellent overall choice for their well-rounded stats as well as their Resilience rating.

Warbringer Chestguard
comes with an enormous amount of stats and therefore is by far the best value piece for that slot. The Season 1 Arena chest is also a great choice here if you are into PvP, especially if you need additional Hit Rating on top of the 2p set bonus for additional resilience. However, you would have to strictly use tank gems to make it a better piece than T4, which might conflict with your PvP optimization.

Phase 1 comes with a variety of mitigation-oriented gloves of similar value, but no option for a more balanced choice with both threat and survival. This is a slot where you will have to choose between a purely defensive and an offensive option. For Mitigation,
Topaz-Studded Battlegrips
will be your best option, but since it comes from a World Boss, it will only be available to a few players. Alternatively, the
Iron Gauntlets of the Maiden
are a close second.
Grips of Deftness
, however, are one of the most polarizing items of the Protection Warrior gear set because they are

and most people will immediately disregard them for that reason. While the armor difference with similar level plate gloves is high, in the grand scheme of things it will only increase your physical damage taken by 1%, which is an acceptable trade-off for the incredible threat they provide,

The Legs slot is not the most exciting one, as every option heavily focuses on mitigation, except the Arena Legs, which introduce a more balanced choice with a reasonable amount of threat but not nearly as good a trade-off as the helm, shoulders, or chest. Arena gear also poses the issue of using conflictual enchants between Tank and PvP optimization. If you prefer your Arena Legs enchanted with

Similar to cloaks, all necks perform about the same therefore there isn't really
one best neck
but many viable choices depending on your needs.
If you need more mitigation and defense for your crit immunity, the
Necklace of the Juggernaut
is a great and easy-to-obtain neckpiece that you can farm outside of raids, with slightly better stats than the alternative found in Karazhan.
On the other hand, if you need a boost to your hit rating to increase your threat generation, the
Worgen Claw Necklace
is a valuable pick up as it provides almost 1% hit in a single item. It's also a great swap to add or remove hit on demand if you have Draenei, providing the

aura in your group.
Finally, if you don't need either defense or hit rating, the
Saberclaw Talisman
provides a great balance of threat and mitigation.

When it comes to threat options,
Shapeshifter's Signet
is by far the best ring available and your recommended first ring for the next couple of phases, thanks to its amazing threat increase in a single slot. Other threat-oriented rings in Phase 1, unfortunately, overlap with most physical damage dealers' BiS gear and will be highly contested. As always, it is well regarded to work with your raid team and pass on contested items.
There are a variety of almost equal, mitigation-only rings to pick from in Phase 1.
Violet Signet of the Great Protector
is the best of the bunch and guaranteed as you progress your reputation with The Violet Eye. However, the slightly worse
Shermanar Great-Ring
or
Ring of Unyielding Force
are great alternatives if you want your unique Violet Signet ring to be the DPS-oriented
Violet Signet of the Master Assassin
instead, for an easy-to-obtain second threat-oriented ring without competing with DPS in your raid.
The very contested
瑪瑟里頓之首
doesn't offer any valuable reward for a Protection Warrior, since the
A'dal's Signet of Defense
is worse than the
Violet Signet of the Great Protector
, and the DPS ring is pretty bad for Warriors.

Best in Slot Trinkets for Protection Warrior in TBC Classic Phase 1
Trinkets are an ideal slot to adjust your threat or mitigation needs on the fly with a large variety of options ranging from pure threat to pure stamina. It is generally advised to avoid relying on trinkets to achieve your crit immunity to preserve this freedom of juggling different choices based on the encounter.
For mitigation, the stars of Phase 1 are undoubtedly the Engineering trinkets
Goblin Rocket Launcher
and
Gnomish Poultryizer
, providing an impressive +45 stamina. These trinkets will remain the best survival trinkets all the way to Phase 3. Plus, they are not unique, so you can craft 2 for +90 stamina. The Rocket Launcher doubles as a decent long-range pulling tool, but is a lot more expensive to craft than the Gnomish version.
Note:
Do not forget to craft the Gnomish only BoP

when you are leveling Engineering if you plan to go Goblin later for the Rocket Launcher.
Non-Engineers can use
Argussian Compass
and

as alternative stamina trinkets, also providing a nice boost of resilience to reach your crit immunity with minimal gear at the start of the phase. However, I
highly recommend
becoming an Engineer in TBCC as a Protection Warrior to craft these amazing trinkets as soon as possible, as well as many tools to help your AoE threat generation, and BiS helmets and guns in future phases.
The best threat-oriented trinket for Phase 1 is the
Icon of Unyielding Courage
, providing a large chunk of hit rating but, more importantly, an on-use that will boost your armor penetration to build that essential snap threat on pull. Hit rating, Expertise, and Armor penetration are the strongest offensive stats for a Protection Warrior, since it increases the damage output of your abilities across the board, even the odd ones like
or
.
On the flip side, Heroic Blood Furnace is one of the hardest heroics to complete with a stupidly hard gauntlet event, so you may not be able to get your hands on this trinket right away...
In the meantime,
Romulo's Poison Vial
is a close alternative with slightly more hit rating and a chance to proc some additional damage for some steady threat throughout the fight.
As a third choice, the
Gnomeregan Auto-Blocker 600
is a great, balanced trinket with both threat and mitigation value and a middle-ground between the Engie trinkets and Icon. Since it is considered a
defensive trinket
, the on-use
does not share a cooldown
with
offensive trinkets
such as Icon, which means you can pair both buffs for maximum snap threat on pull.

Best in Slot Weapons for Protection Warrior in TBC Classic Phase 1
Your choice of weapon is mainly dictated by your rage generation on a specific encounter. For this reason, there isn't really a single best weapon for all situations.
Against low to medium hitting enemies, such as normal dungeons and nerfed Karazhan bosses, your rage generation from incoming damage is expected to be low, and thus you won't be able to use
often. In this situation, a slow main-hand weapon will boost your
damage the most and yield the highest Threat Per Second (TPS).
Against hard-hitting enemies, such as High King Maulgar or Magtheridon, your rage bar will be constantly full from the incoming damage, which will let you convert every swing into a
. In this situation, a fast main-hand will yield more total
, from which the base threat value will greatly increase your TPS and far outweigh the slightly lower
damage.
Finally, in Heroic dungeons, where your rage generation from incoming damage will be high but you will also use
the most to build threat on multiple targets, a slow weapon will be preferred for higher
damage,
and optionally
旋風斬
.
On paper
, an ideal combo of weapons for Phase 1 would be the slow Blacksmithing craft
Dragonmaw
for its very high damage and amazing haste proc, which doubles as the best weapon for Fury Warrior, should you be asked to DPS at any point. Paired with a faster weapon such as
King's Defender
or
The Sun Eater
for the occasional hard-hitting boss that will fill your rage bar constantly.
That being said, due to underwhelming boss damage and low incoming rage in nerfed Phase 1 raids,
Dragonmaw is the best all-rounder weapon for Phase 1
, and you will have close to no opportunity to make use of a fast weapon. However, you should still pick up the fast
King's Defender
in Karazhan just in case future phases come out with pre-nerf content that isn't a complete snoozefest.

The gear list doesn't follow the author's own stat guide. I'm sure there is a reason, can you clarify? Your first most important stat is listed as 490 defense. This set has you at 449.

I've made a few gear sets for various stages of the game that I thought I'd share. I consider them fairly balanced, but favored towards threat generation. Several items can be swapped for more defensive ones though.
Pre-Heroic:
This set is a low-effort entry-level gearset intended to prepare you for heroics as well as Karazhan. It does achieve 9% hit and crit immunity.
Pre-Raid:
This set requires a lot more time and effort to acquire, and is something you can work on outside of your raid lockouts.
BiS:
The ultimate, Literal God™ Phase 1 BiS set.
No PvP(scum) or Classic items are included in any of the sets (except ZG head enchant, but it can easily be substituted). There are however, Classic items that would be an upgrade over some of the items in these sets and could be worth going back for. Most notably, the
Scarab
and
Glyph

Alright so Orc > Warbringer vs King's Defender.
What I've read as far as Stat Weights go is that Expertise: Hit is 2:1.
If that were to be the case, King's Defender has +10 hit thus bringing it up to par on threat stats (assuming you don't have to go out of your way to get Hit)
Not to mention you get +16 Stam and +182 armor AND +6 DPS.
I don't see how Warbringer is better for Orcs, given all of the evidence.
Can someone elaborate? :/

This guide is better than others I have seen for classic... But the 2 gearsets above are a little odd to me. I mean, if you're going for a threat-focused set, ESP wearing arena gear where most of your threat stats are in the form of crit/ap, why on earth would you use the 18stam meta instead of the 12agi3%crit meta? Esp in phase1... I understand it's difficult to display a "BiS" gearset, since tanks (esp prot warrs) are constantly swapping pieces in and out depending what we're tanking that minute, but that seems like an obvious oversight to me.
Also, again esp in phase1 and esp in gearset focusing on using pvp/arena/dps gear, using an Impale build seems a much better choice for tanks who are more tps/dps conscious, not only for the dps boost while tanking, but for times when you aren't tanking and dual-wield devastating a boss (say, Aran). Just my 2cents.

At the rings, a lot of the same Violet Signets are written. Was wondering what this originally said, can't really make sense if it right now.
PS: at trinkets the header says Balance druids ;)
