Initial tactics taken from the Elitist Jerks forums:

Jan'alai has 2 major abilities, and at 35%ish hatches his remaining eggs(explained later)
- He has a 5 minute enrage that is rather unimportant, as it barely increases his damage.

1 - A "Flame breath" type cone that has a long range but a small width, this does about 4-5k to people in a single line and adds up fast (believe to be random target). It is important to minimize its damage by spreading out appropriatly.

2 - He will periodically teleport the entire raid to him, put up "flame walls" on the outer ring of his area so you cannot escape. He will then begin spawning "time bombs" randomly throughout his area. After approximatly 10 seconds they will blow up dealing 3-5k(?) dmg in a 5 yard area, so you need to find a spot that is safe and does not have fire bombs on it. This ability seems to be on a random timer as sometimes he will forget about it and other times he will spam it.

Throughout the fight he calls 2 "Hatchers"(Low HP) which run to the side and begin hatching eggs into dragonhawks at an increasing rate. You need to Kill 1 Hatcher as soon as possible and go give the 2nd one a hug, tanking and killing the dragonhawks he spawns (we would normally do about 5-7 hawks at a time and just draw out the fight).
When you are comfortable with the amount of hawks spawned, kil the hatcher and mop up the remaining hawks. This is the hardest part of the fight as you will have to heal alot of raid damage due to the small area of the egg platforms and the damage his fire breath does, you should assign at least one healer to go with the group that willl kill eggs, preferably one that is good at raid healing (CoH priest, resto shaman etc). The other difficult part of this fight is his ability to port and put up fire walls to the egg spawns while the hatchers are busy hatching eggs, causing you to get zerged so be careful!

The dragonhawks individually have a stacking flame buffet, and a fire damage based proc on top of their normal melee which is about 1k~ on leather.

The tactics to this boss are really, really simple
1) Minimize his fire breath damage when he isnt spawning hatchers
2) When hatchers spawn kill one, send the group to kill dragonhawks spawned by the other one.
3) Dont die to the fire bomb minigame.
4) Make sure you hatch almost ALL of the eggs before 35% (yes this means light dps for the entire fight), or you will be horribly zerged.
5) Profit

Downed this boss tonight using a Warrior maintank and a Paladin offtank (me). When the hatchers first spawn, we killed one and let the other hatcher hatch all of the eggs on one side, I tanked them all and we focused AOE on the Dragonhawks. During the second spawn we killed one and let the other one spawn the rest of the dragonhawks on the other side. Did the same thing and burned them down. After all eggs are hatched, the hatchers stop spawning and you are free to just deal with the boss. As far as the bombs go, just as long as you aren't right on top of one, you won't take any damage. You can also reset this boss by just walking down the stairs, you can also do this if you addicently pull as well. Very easy fight once your group learns his abilities. Flame Buffet ability from the dragonhawks stacks indefinately, but is dispellable.

-Spread out
-Kill Dragonhawk eggs thoughout the fight
-Avoid dying to the bombs
-Ignore enrage timer (This does almost nothing to a well geared tank)

This boss is very easy if you have a paladin offtank. If you do not have a paladin tank and use a warrior or a druid they will have a very hard time to keep aggro off all the hatchlings that must be spawned (to not get owned at 35%). Actually it won't work since your healers will pull aggro or your dps if you start bombing to fast. Priests should be very carefull in healing when dragonhawks spawn or they will get owned very fast.

Btw the hatcher will hatch eggs at an increasing rate (One at first, then 3, 5 etc.). So just check the number of eggs before you start the encounter and determine how many eggs per hatchers should be opened. Hatchers are stunable, so stun-kill the first is a good choice. The hatchers have no aggro-table (they will try to go for eggs always) so you can go all out.

Its best to use the Morogrim strategy here and have one paladin (even heal-specced) tank all the hawks.
After the paladin has build enough threat burn them down.

Down this boss. On adds, we let both hatchers live and let them hatched 3 eggs on each side and then killed them. We did a sequenced of 3-3-3-3-3, which only spawned 6 adds per side. Once the boss hit his fake enraged, we let only 2 eggs opened per side when they spawned and killed 2 more eggs. It left us with 1 egg per side when the boss was left with 35% health, max dps burned and the 2 adds were killed by paly. Had a paly & rogue on east side and paly & hunter on west side for adds.

A hint for the tanks or anyone who is having trouble finding a safe spot. Jan'Alai will never throw a bomb directly underneath himself. As a matter of fact, just hanging out near the middle, will make it very easy for you to find a safe spot. Just turn your camera so that it's facing down towards the ground so that you can see open spots better.

He tends to throw the bombs in waves, starting with the insides first, then middle, then outside. Thats why when you're running to a spot that you think is free, only to have him throw a bomb right there. This never happens near the middle b/c of these waves.

One risk you run is too many people stacking on top of each other for the frontal fire breathe, so dont have the entire raid there, I'd say at most have a tank, 1 melee dps, and 1 tree form druid (since they move so slow).

We did this with a Warrior MT, had a Paladin off-tank the adds, and two Mages in PvP gear.

Had the two Paladins in the party BoP the first side of eggs each Mage and cleared it on one attempt. The next side was cleared using Ice Blocks and rooting in one attempt.

We ended up clearing each sides in one pull and had Jan all to ourselves with no adds to deal with at all. If you have a group like this with two Mages I'd recommend it, we sat around 10-11k hp with the PvP gear on and saved the rest of the raid a lot of trouble.

Seeing as our raid had a lot of melee and just one true aoe class in it, we decided to do this a little different. The tank, along with one healer and shadowpriest went to one hatchery while the rest of the raid went to the other, and we took out all eggs in one go. After the first teleport, we swapped sides and cleared the other side. Then it was just a zerg to the end. This tactic doesn't even require a second tank as rogues/dps warriors or even enh shamans can easily take the damage, even with one healer.

The only risk in this tactic is the first breath after a teleport, but that's easily avoidable if people just stay away from each other until the tank has moved the boss.

Have any other warrior tanks notice that they take a lot of crushing blows during this fight? I consider myself to be a good tank, have tanked up to the beginning of BT, and I rarely take crushing blows on bossfights...but after 2 attempts on this guy I noticed he averaged about 10crushes per attempt.. and I was spamming shield block just like on any other fight (esp after noticing the amount of crushes I took on the first attempt). The crushes only hit for about 3k..but still...

Intuit, The Black Temple Bosses have around 9.47% 'Crushing Blow Chance', so yeh.. it is a bit of 'high' for an instance as Zul'Aman.

After a hatcher takes care of all the eggs on one side, he'll run to the other side and start his business there.

One tactic that works for the eggs:

Kill one hatcher with extreme prejudice. Let the other hatch all the eggs.

A tankadin drops consecration where the dragonhawks fly onto the main platform. A hunter drops a frost (slowing) trap right in front of that. The slowing effect allows the consecration to hit the dragonhawks a couple times and guarantees that the tankadin picks them up.

Naturally, whoever has AoE uses it. Seed of Corruption works best. With a few characters doing AoE, the dragonhawks will drop before they have a chance to get more than one or two hits off.

Once the hatcher is done with all the eggs, he'll run over to the other side and get to work on the eggs over there. Kill him, instead, as fire bombs will be coming out.

On the next wave, kill both hatchers immediately, unless the tankadin has so few debuffs that he'll survive.

On the third wave, let the hatchers take care of the rest of the eggs.

After that, it's just a matter of dodging bombs, tanking, and spanking.

Hunters: Keep your pet dismissed until all eggs have been burned. The bombs will kill your pet if not fully specced in fire resist.

in my opinion the hardest of the 4 animal bosses
mostly because there are so many ways you can wipe

A: after the soft enrage the tank gets nuked
B: the adds kill some of the more squishy dps (this mostly happens when suddenly all dps on adds is cought in a flame breath)
C: a late grenade locks one of the raid members in and one shots him
D: the hatcher lives one tick to long
E: you hit 35% at a really lousy time

We had a paladin tank so we killed one hatcher and let the other hatch all the eggs on the side. Me (mage) and a lock AoE'd them down and repeated the process when the other hatcher came. Then we just went all out on the boss.

also, this was my first time there so i actually took damage from a bomb; i didn't know how far away you can stand, but its about 5-8 yards

EZ EZ EZ fight! This is not a dps fight it is a common sense fight. When he summons fiery balls find an open space because they explode and aoe you. He will do flame breath randomly to some side of him which should only hit one player so stay spread out. He will summon hatcher to hatch the eggs on the platforms near him. Have a melee dps pick off one of the hatcher and have a pally
tank pick up the dragonhawks with aoe taunt. All dps especially warlocks and mages should be killing these adds. Once one side is dead move on to the next, to make it rly ez put slow dps on janalai and only let a few eggs hatch at a time... But remember at 35% janalai hatches ALL the eggs so be sure to kill all the eggs before him.

No one should ever get "trapped" or "surprised" by a bomb. He always lays the bombs starting close to him and moving outward. If you pick a safe spot among the early bombs, where the late bombs land are no concern to you.

If you complete the time event (Zul'Aman Time Event) for Jan'alai, you can open the Kraz's Package and receive one of the items of level 141 (Kraz's Package).

Easily the best looking boss in Zul'Aman. He just looks so mighty and every inch the god he is.
Is he considered the hardest avatar? I know Halazzi is usually done last but that is because of the timed event... Some help on this matter would be really cool.

This dude is prty easy unless your group doesnt have good placement. He hits for good damage and almost every 30 seconds he spawns 2 hatchers...1 of these must be killed and 1 must be allowed to hatch 3 eggs before the babys are dpsed along with the hatcher. The reason for this is at 35% he spawns ALL the rest of the unhatched eggs, they spawn 2 babies per! This is not good when u still have all 40 eggs. He also sucks you all into the middle and you have to run to a corner. eggs will spawn with a 5 yard explosion that will do over 7k damage!

You should have a druid at this point, the druid can root the scouts and they will go down in about 3 seconds^_^

The pulls to the boss are easily done. Have a pally mount up, run to the scout, dismount then stun it. Kill it fast.

After that, pay attention where the scouts spawn and how the pat so you down them as the appear, or not at all if you aren't in their aggro range. Move forward quickly and you can get to the boss no problem.

the road leading up to him..is a pain, we did this today, we found out the hard way by watching what the scouts do. once we found out that they call adds we just waited till one pats around then on 3 everyone nukes the hell out of him befor he gets to the drums and from there on it was sweet..main thing to do with the scouts is when you see one get everyone to nuke him then continue down the part as easy as that =D

As said, druid roots make the scouts a non-issue. Separate guardians from flame casters on pulls and keep the flame casters sheeped/sapped as long as possible. Mages should spellsteal the casting buff asap (in fact, if you have multiple mages, they probably will be fighting over it... 1.5s Pyros!).

For Jan'Alai himself, 4 healers is a good idea with one being a Paladin. Since you only need one tank with this method, you can stay constant with your 5 dps.

Our setup: Warrior tank, 2 holy pallies, 1 holy priest, 1 resto druid, 1 aff. lock, 1 fire mage (me), 1 rogue, 1 hunter, 1 shadow priest. At least one pally and one lock are needed for this strat.

On the pull, 2 dps stand at the stairs and kill 1 hatcher. Follow the other one to a egg bridge. Situate the pally on the bridge and have one of the dps start whittling the hatcher down so he will die on the next hit. Let the pally drop a consecrate with righteous fury (Your pally may have imp r. fury, even better).

Spawn 8-12 birds and have your dps kill the hatcher. Have your lock SoC and any mages AoE after the pally gets a little hate. If you get teleported mid bird burn, they should all still flock to the pally but have all dps move from the boss to the birds.

Repeat 3-4 times leaving 4-8 birds on one platform. Burn to 37-38% and reposition your pally to grab the birds coming at 35%.

Hopefully at this point, he hasn't gone into enrage, but depending on your progression, healing through it may or may not be an issue if it's at more than 35%. With 4 healers now, you should have no issue healing through the enrage.

This boss is realativly easy with a well geared group that listens.

The harest part of this boss is probably clearing too him because there are many, many Amani Scouts that patroll the area. The scouts die after about 2 or 3 spell casts but they try to run to the nearest drum. If they make it to this drum before killed they summon 2 elite reinforcements which are also rather easy, but too many can be devastating. The scouts are suceptable to stuns, and snares so rogue stun locks are extreamly helpful here.

Jan'alai himself is done with most ease if you group consists of:

-1 main tank, probably a warrior
-1 paladin tank (this tank will pick up many birds, can be done without one) This tank can be either protection or holy based on your group set up, no need to change what you have.
- 3-4 healers, we did it with 3, but it was extreamly intensive and it is possibly easier with 4
-4-5 DPS, some AoE needed

When the fight starts spread out so that there is nobody in front of, or behind you. He does a flame breath at random targets that will hit for 5k damage. Most heals will be on tanks so attempt to heal yourselves (bandages / health pots).

After about 10 seconds into the fight he spawns 2, non-elite hatchers. 1 hatcher will go to each side of him, across the bridge and start blowing up eggs. It is recomended you kill 1 of the hatchers before any eggs spawn. Allow the other hatcher to blow up about half the other side and AoE them down. If you have a paladin tank, you can attempt to kill more then half.

Jan'alai will do a teleport which brings everybody into the middle shortly after the hatchers. If you do not kill the birds before this mass teleport, they will run into the middle and likely attack whoever had the most threat before the teleport. The birds don't hit very hard and can be soloed by whoever they're attacking.

Immediatly after he teleports, he will through many, many bombs. These bombs will blow up after about 8 seconds dealing 4-5k fire damage to anybody near one. The explosion of the eggs is barely any larger then the graphic of the bomb.

There will always be a safe place with no bombs to run too. This safe place will usually be right next to him on one side, so the tank doesnt have to move him far. Once the bombs blow up, kill remaining birds and DPS for a few seconds.

By this time it will have been about 1 min from last hatchers, and he will spawn another 2 hatchers to blow up eggs.

Finish the first side you started on. If that side is clear, then kill the eggs on the other side. Our guild managed to kill all the eggs before Jan'alai reached 30%, it is not difficult.

Jan'alai has very little health, apx. 900,000.

The fight is constant repeat, eggs, teleport, bombs, DPS etc. Untill 30%. At 30% he blows up any remaining eggs, if u did not kill them all, any birds will run to middle and start attacking healers.

He also has a 5 minuite "soft" enrage. He will not go crazy and 1 shotting everybody, but only do significantly more damage, to the already hard hits on the tank. All healers must be on MT, and not raid healing.

When all DPS focuses on boss at this point, he goes down very quickly and the fight is over.

So good luck :), he drops some nice loot (i want the shield!)

Here is the guide how to make this boss with a not so strong/experienced group.

1. Delegate TWO the most experienced group members (only DPSers) for handling the hatchers. Their class or DPS capabilities don't matter that much as their experience and ability to handle complicated tasks reliably. Their task: "escort" the hatchers (as they appear) to the eggs and allow them to hatch THREE eggs (no more no less!) on EACH side(very important!), and then IMMEDIATELY kill the hatchers. (Not only not to allow them to hatch futher, but also the teleport to the boss can happen in a split second after the 3rd egg and the handler won't be able to kill the hatcher. Wipe.) 1 more egg hatched, 1 less egg hatched any time on any side = wipe.

2. All the rest of the team you should give the following tasks:

1) To everybody:

- NO raid member except the designated handlers should EVER touch a hatcher!
- Do not be afraid of the Enrage! It's not the end of the fight, it just means that the healers will have to focus more on the tank.
- Spread out and do not stay behind your mate's back. (do not forget to spread out again after the bombing)

2) To the DPSers:
Your order of priorities:
- 1-st priority. Stay alive during the teleport+bombing: find a free spot between the bombs then go on with your duties;
- 2-nd priority. DPS THE BIRD ADD if you see it! Yes, ALL THE DPSERS should DPS (zerg) the birds when at least one bird is alive! It's not only for killing the birds as fast as possible, but also to moderate DPS on the boss. It's an unique boss, "the more DPS the better" is NOT about it. Except the birds - the birds should be killed as fast as possible.
- 3-rd priority. When NO birds alive - DPS the boss. Be ready to stop the DPS if the RL orders so.

2) To the MT
- Tank the boss, obviously. The most difficult part for him is the begginning of the Enrage if some of the birds are still alive at that moment. He must survive at all costs.

3) To the healers

- 1-st priority. Stay alive during the teleport+bombing: find a free spot between the bombs then go on with your duties. Try to do it QUICLKLY and go on healing, since the bombing usually happens together with the birds's herd and healing the raid at that moment is very important. A good idea is to wait (not stopping healing) a bit after the bombs start falling looking for a clear spot, then move there fast and go on healing. A good idea for DPSers too BTW.
- 2-nd priority. Heal the tank and the raid. If a bird eats a healer it's the DPSers' fault, a clear sign that the DPSers are slacking.
BEFORE the enrage watch the raid health closely, losing a member can be fatal, but the tank gets not so much damage. The AOE DPSers health should be watched the most when the birds are being killed.
AFTER the enrage all healers focus on the tank, keep him alive at all costs. Heal the raid only if you can, losing 1-2 DPSers at that stage usually doesn't lead to a wipe, losing the tank...well you know ;)

4) To yourself =)

As the fight goes - the RL must watch the boss HP percentage left and the quantity of the eggs left on each side. The task is: get the boss down to 35% NO EARLIER AND NO LATER than there are 2-3 eggs left on each side - given that the hatcher handlers perfectly did their jobs. I they didn't - that's a wipe anyway. If there are more eggs left and the boss is already near 35% - command everybody to stop DPS and wait for the next hatching.

Its not 'really' an enrage timer, its just a "birds need to be dead by this stage" timer.
as long as the eggs are down at this stage its only a tank and spank a couple of hots, or single heals to top up firebreath targets once the eggs are dealt to and the fight is over.

the hardest part as forementioned is finding 2 people to kill the hatchers and making the rest of the raid understand NOT to help.
and a tank that can hold enough of the adds to release a good amount, sometimes a 4 hatch in the first wave can be a little rough on me (druid tank) but on a paladin you just release the entire side at once, we even use a rogue on the other hatcher when they first spawn to let 3 eggs (2 times) hatch because the rogue and one other dps over there can handle single targeting them down.

second hatch is normally the other side then we can get the left overs easily.

oh and like everything else in TBC
"GET OUT OF THE FIRE!" or in this case dont stack.

Ok i dont know how many people actually will read this, and i dont know if this was been done before, biut one day i was thinking about how to maximize mage DPS and speed up guild progression for our early T5 guild and it dawned on me....the secret is the flame casters. You need a well geared deep arcane mage 49-11-0 or 49-0-11 you need slow and imp counter spell. the trick is to sheep a flame caster before the boss and maintain sheep throughout the fight, after the trash group is dead place slow on the mob while the raid heads toward top of steps. After they are in ice lance the caster and then blink through the wall (opposite the prison) i know it sounds funny but try it it works then when the mob arrives around the corner counter spell silence him and have a priest mind control him to the top of the stairs...hold the mind control until counterspell cooldown has reset then silence+sheep+spellsteal+slow as the buff should be on him.

Phase 2: starting the fight
congratulations you have a non retarded guild...so far! The Mage is key in this fight obviously u MUST maintain sheep+slow on the mob AT ALL TIMES and do not stand next to it EVER. both you and the shadow priest must move to the opposite side and stand together....assuming you are a smart mage and have focus target macros {/focus target /cast polymorph} and {/target focus /cast polymorph} for easy sheeping and targeting this should be a breeze, now for the fun part. Every 2 slows on the target u get to go crazy by breaking the sheep, and here is how u do it. I was sufesscul both with and without fear SLOW is important without it u die and wipe the raid and cost everyone a T6 level ring and a bear mount and everyone laughs at you and hates you forever for ever convincing them to do this stupid crap u saw on thottbot...that being said slow is important to counter the haste buffthat he places on himself. Break the sheep by using ice lance then watch him closely for any casts he makes if he starts casting before he buffs himself its a scrap, cs silence then sheep. but odds are he will buff then cast 80% of the time and its a 20 sec buff :-D as u prolly already know. i think you are beginning to see the picture at this point after the mob is re-sheeped go nuts on boss...but wait in case you are a noob trying to act like a pro listen up use only arcane missiles! if u don't u will pull off tank and the laughing will ensue, anyway u should be doing aprox 2500dps-3kdps....easily....and with salvation on be doing no more threat than a normal fire mage would be, very sweet. anyway enjoy this and assuming you are not poorly geared enjoy your bear mounts.

I have done this several times but have encountered problems with the boss using flame breath on me when i have had a load of flame buffets on me from the adds. Each buffet you get stacks and increases the fire damage done to you, so flame breath can be potentially lethal. I know flame buffet can be dispelled, but this takes time when you have over 20 on you.
Has anyone got a way of combattinig this plz. Normally i tank the adds directly in front of the path leading to the platform/s.
Also if you have a load of adds coming (releasing the whole of one side at a time), it can be messy if you get teleported as getting the adds back under control can be hard. Any suggestions for this plz.

I have a 70 warrior tank who does this all the time. What we do to counter the Pally Tank getting owned by the flame buffet is this:

1- After one of the hatchers is killed, Bird tank needs to position him/herself over to the beginning of the bridge entrance to tank the birds
-Keeps you away from the flame wall that comes up when he does the bombs
-Keeps you as from from Jan'alai as possible

2- When the bird tank positions him/herself for tanking, the Boss tank needs to drag him to the other side (i.e. near the entrance to the other bird bridge)
-This helps mitigate the bird tank from being hit by the flame breath. If Jan'alai is in the center, the bird tank is at risk of getting hit by a flame breath casted on him or even someone near him.

That should solve your bird tank flame breath issues. Any questions please repost.
