The Island Expeditions are a new form content in Battle for Azeroth. Reminiscent of the scenarios from Mists of Pandaria, players enter them in a team of three (still no information if the team must be premade or not) to adventure to a distant island in order to collect Azerite and mystery treasures.
Goblins and Gnomes developed technology to find which islands may contain Azerite, while our new allies in Battle for Azeroth will supply us with the ships required to reach those islands.
The team composition is not role dependent, meaning you can enter an Expedition with three DPS, or three healers, and you should be able to complete it anyways.
The main theme for the Expeditions are Exploration, even if you encounter an island you visited previously, Island Expeditions are randomly generated and can differ in these ways: Creatures, capture points, chests and Azerite nodes, quest givers, consumables and shrines, start location, caves, ships and more!
When you arrive at an island, you will encounter members of the opposing faction-- that arrived in the island for the same reason as you-- so you have to race against them for the resources and treasures on that island. These opponents can be either AI (a new advanced AI tech, new in Battle for Azeroth) or actual opposing faction players, depending on if you've chosen the PvP mode.
Expeditions are supposed to be quick, lasting 15-20 minutes at most.
Expeditions will have four different difficulties:
The first three difficulties are against a new type of AI being tested in Battle for Azeroth, more objective focused and better PvP trained than what we have today. And the PvP difficulty, as the name implies, matches your team against another team from the opposing faction.
The common creatures AI is generally well known. Melee mobs will generally walk to you and punch. If you walk too far, it'll go back to it's spawn. That's why for these new islands, they are trying a different type of AI, that tries to beat the players at their own game. For instance, the AI will try to have tactical ability usage. It may try to Polymorph or Sap your healer.
The biggest advance is that the AI will have a good sense of map objectives; where are the big bosses? Where are the Azerite nodes? And also a greater sense of strategy; it may polymorph you and then just walk away as it has better things to do.
Also the AI will likely have personalities such as a rogue named "Sneaky Pete" that notices that you pulled too much, Sap your healer and then burst you down.
The Great Sea is filled with uncharted islands, and Battle for Azeroth will send you to wide array of these in an effort to locate resources to fuel the war between the Horde and the Alliance. The new Island Expeditions feature is a three-player cooperative experience grounded in exploration and small-scale conflict, set in a diverse range of environments. Each time you set out on an Island Expedition, you’ll engage in a variety of objectives and race against “Advanced NPC” opponents for these resources. If you’re looking to engage in PvP, there will be an opportunity for it here as well.
