Azj-Kahet is the last leveling zone in The War Within, and we've progressed through the main storyline to bring you all the details!
WARNING: The War Within Story Spoilers in this post!
Chapter 1 - Friends in the Dark
The Azj-Kahet storyline begins with the Reckoning airship trapped in nerubian webs. After we check with our allies, we go rescue injured Arathi knights while searching for possible clues on Anduin's whereabouts, or whether he's even alive or not. We end up finding his gloves, his cloak and a bunch of bleached, non-human bones, indicating he may be still alive and fought back against his nerubian captors.
After confering with Faerin and Alleria, we search for the mysterious protector who saved us from crashing into Azj-Kahet (who was mentioned in the last cutscene in Hallowfall), as she seems an enemy of the nerubians - and possibly an ally. Alleria leaves us to continue her search for Anduin. As we venture deep into one of the pits of Azj-Kahet, we find our savior - Orweyna, a Harronir.
Orweyna reveals she had been watching us since Hallowfall, and she is concerned with the "Black Blood" threatening the ecosystems of Khaz Algar. She requests us to obtain Nerubian extractors and help cleanse the pit we're in, as the Black Blood is dangerous in the wrong hands.
As we make out of the pit, Orweyna compliments us on surviving our task. Captain Exposition is there, indicating a cutscene happens once we get out.
As the player and Orweyna emerge from the Breathing Pit, they are confronted by the other harronir in Orweyna's pod.
An argument ensues, the other harronir questioning why Orweyna would break one of the sacred rules to enlist the help of this mortal. Orweyna says that it had to be done for the sake of the roots. The harronir begrudgingly accept the new direction and depart for now, but not before warning Orweyna that there will be consequences for all of them for what she has done.
Orweyna then sends us to a nearby nerubian tower, where she notices someone was in the tower first, and it was not a battle, but a hunt. On the distance, we see the City of Threads for the first time, the seat of the Nerubian Empire. As we approach the city, a cutscene plays.
The player witnesses the City of Threads for the first time.
Orweyna warns the player off, telling them that they have no hope of infiltrating the city.
If Alleria and Anduin are there, then they are lost.
Orweyna departs, leaving the player alone.
Behind them, a small spider-creature rings a bell, attracting their attention.
We talk to the spider creature behind us, named Spindle, who offers us a parchment mentioning that we'll be stumbling in the dark without help. He offers "a thread for us to cling to". As we follow him and dodge hostile nerubians talking about an "Ascension Day", we're eventually led to a place called the Weaver's Lair, which seems to be a safe haven, with friendly nerubians welcoming us.
Widow Arak'nai, also known as the Weaver, welcomes us to her lair. As we explore the lair, we learn more about her intentions - She is a follower of Queen Neferess, the previous Nerubian queen that was overthrown by Ansurek, her daughter. She wants to overthrow Ansurek in revenge for Neferess's death, but she needs a plan, as she has no army.
> Tell me about yourself.
Widow Arak'nai: I am the Widow Arak'nai. For many years, I officially served as the Royal Weaver to Queen Neferess. Unofficially, I pursued a variety of... additional interests.
Widow Arak'nai: But now my beloved queen is dead, and her daughter has been led astray by a so-called "Harbringer." I will not allow this creature to usurp our great kingdom for her own ends... But I cannot stop her alone.
> Tell me about the enemy forces.
Widow Arak'nai: This Harbinger has the entirety of Azj-Kahet's military at her disposal.
Widow Arak'nai: Before her arrival, General Anub'azal led the kingdom's forces. Ansurek deposed him in favor of one of the Harbringer's pet ascended, and now the army's ranks teem with those corrupted wretches.
> Tell me about the ascended.
Widow Arak'nai: The ascended are the Harbringer's gift to Ansurek. A fierce contingent of violent hunter-killers, made by the harbringer in the darkest depths of the city's Transformatory.
Widow Arak'nai: They are impossibly strong, and I have no army of my own. If I am to reach Ansurek and dispose of the Harbringer, then I will need to find a way to subvert her military might from within.
> Tell me about the Queen's inner circle.
Widow Arak'nai: Even if we do not engage the Harbringer directly, a more subtle approach will prove equally as difficult. What I need is an ally in Ansurek's inner circle. Someone who can come and go without suspicion.
Widow Arak'nai: The denizens of the Burrows speak of a 'Vizier'. Some manner of patriot who works from within the queen's walls. He would do nicely... If only I knew his identity.
> Do you know where my allies are?
Widow Arak'nai: Worry not, little morsel. I am well aware that you did not come down here alone. I've already sent my weave-rats to track down your compatriots.
Widow Arak'nai: Consider it a gesture of good faith... And, with luck, the start of a long and mutually beneficial relationship.
> How did you know where to find me?
Widow Arak'nai: I specialize in little pushes, dear. Every plan is a tapestry, and I am adept at nudging and tugging just one thread at a time. You, though, are less of a tugged thread and more of a lit match.
Widow Arak'nai: The Harbringer's shadowy venom has stained Ansurek's tapestry. That is why I sought you out. I require a stray ember, and you need a friend in the dark.
This leads to an introduction to the Severed Threads, one of the Renown factions of The War Within - And the end of Chapter 1 of Azj-Kahet.
Chapter 2 - Unraveling the Trapped
Chapter 2 begins with the Weaver telling us there's been a tip about an intriguing series of events happening in the northen area of Azj-Kaket, and asks us to investigate on her behalf. As we arrive in the area, we find Faerin, who managed to find some Dalaran survivors!
As we offer rations around to aid the survivors, we learn that there's a straggler who insisted on staying behind before they got captured by the nerubians. As we go rescue them, we find out its none other than Flynn Fairwind, who was poisoned by the nerubians. Flynn tells us they took the rest of the prisoners to the surface, and he came across one of the Weaver's spiderlings as he was looking around for information. A cutscene then plays.
Zev'kall, the Ascended general of the nerubian military, berates underlings for failing to keep the prisoners who escaped.
To avoid word of this failure spreading, he executes the underlings.
Then, Zev'kall leaves for Siegehold.
Flynn then requests us to dispatch some of the nerubian forces in the area, while recovering his weapons and read some intelligence on the nerubian, to learn what is going on in the area.
Flynn: Seems that Zev'kall fellow we saw is getting... pheromones sent to him? From a general. No idea what that means, though.
Flynn: Looks like my fellow prisoners escaping was no coincidence. And these orders came from a nerubian. Anub'azal...
If you paid attention to the Weaver's musings previously, you'll remember that Anub'azal is the nerubian general that was replaced by one of Xal'atath's ascended nerubian. Flynn then has an idea - we should hide in a box and get carried to Anub'azal to see what are his intentions.
Anub'azal greets us friendly, way too focused on his plans to overthrow Xal'atath's newly ascended general, Zev'kall. He asks us to look for something useful in the pile of refuse he has in his home, and we do find something useful... indeed... it's Gazlowe! He's playing dead, but Anub'azal knows he's alive and pretending this entire time.
After Gazlowe reveals himself, Anub'azal first covers us in pheromones to make us friendly towards his soldiers, then sends us to kill nerubian forces loyal to Zev'kall and retrieve logs of the nerubians killed by him.
After this, we obtain Zev'kall's pheromone emitter, while freeing the remaining prisoners in Siegehold. Most of these soldiers are Dalaran survivors, and we come up with a plan to use Anub'azal's pheromones to run past the nerubian guards by pretending we're a fake prisoner convoy, as the nerubian are effectively blind - And can only identify friend or foe by smell.
Our plan works and the Dalaran prisoners are safe. Instead of bringing the pheromone emitter to Anub'azal, we decide to instead bring it to the Weaver, to see if maybe she has a use for it. As we bring the Dalaran survivors back to the Weaver's Lair, they do settle in nicely, and this finishes up Chapter 2 of Azj-Kahet.
Chapter 3 - Plans Within Plans
Chapter 3 begins with the Weaver telling us we were sent an invitation to meet with the Vizier, one of the most wealthy nerubian in the City of Threads (and the one the Weaver herself wanted to make allies with).
To ensure our safety, we cover ourselves in the Weaver's pheromones, and then fly to the City of Threads to meet them. As we meet with Executor Nizrek, also known as the Vizier, we also find Anduin - alive!
Anduin has made friends with the Vizier, and we learn that the Vizier is also not too keen on Queen Ansurek being misled by Xal'atath as well. The Vizier agrees to give his pheromones to use so we can blend into the City of Threads. The Vizier tells us he believes Ansurek allied with Xal'atath out of her own free will, and must be eliminated as a result. As we're talking with the Vizier, Alleria finds us, also alive and well, if a little rattled by the presence of nerubians.
I understand that you have not only entered into an alliance with the Weaver, but that you've also parlayed with our famed General Anub'azal as well.
If I were to commit my own resources, we three elderly nerubians would make quite the formidable triumvirate.
The players and the board are set. Now tell me, <Player>, what game do they wish to play?
> The Weaver wants to take out Xal'atath and free Queen Ansurek from her influence.
Anduin Wrynn: Executor Nizrek is one of Queen Ansurek's closest confidants.
Executor Nizrek: Or so she surmises.
Executor Nizrek: Time is short. Here are pheromones that will allow you into the Bazaar. Apply them.
Executor Nizrek: Xal'atath is a problem to be certain, but the Queen is not being influenced. She has made a choice she believes in.
Executor Nizrek: The Weaver will not be pleased, but Ansurek must also be eliminated.
---
Alleria: Back away from him, creature! Now!
Anduin says: Listen to me and lower your bow. He's an ally.
Alleria: An ally? Dalaran fell because of them!
Anduin: Alleria. We can end this war! But not if you loose that arrow.
Alleria: Fine. But you best have a good explanation for this.
The Vizier then reveals to use that the reason we were invited was to witness the "Day of Ascension" = A day where Queen Ansurek will reveal their void-infused evolution, and his first task to us is to reprogram nerubian communicators around the City of Threads to expose Ansurek's propaganda.
Meanwhile, Anduin requests us to explore the City of Threads, and learn that maybe not all the nerubians are that bad. The City of Threads is a city reminiscent of Suramar, with many NPCs and vendors that can be interacted with, but also guards that can reveal that you're not in fact a nerubian.
Alleria: All right, Anduin. Talk.
Anduin: I don't expect you to understand. But I just... in that moment with the airship?
Anduin: Maybe some part of me thought that would be enough for the Light to shine on me again.
Anduin: That-that maybe if I did what my father--
Anduin: --but the Light didn't come. I found myself here, instead.
Executor Nizrek: His actions impressed me so much that I simply had to... redirect... his prison transport.
Anduin: Faerin told me I needed to get out my head about everything. I think she was right.
Andui: Maybe the Light hasn't returned to me. But this? This is what I'm best at.
Alleria: Allying with monsters?
Anduins: Helping people. I'm not going to let Xal'atath ruin a civilization-- no matter how monstrous it appears.
Alleria: ...and you feel unworthy of the Light.
Alleria: I still don't trust these nerubians. But I trust you. And that's enough for now.
After we finish exploring the city, we meet again with Anduin and Alleria. A cutscene plays as we observe the Day of Ascension...
Alleria and Anduin observe the end of the Nerubian Queen's propaganda speech from a high tower vantage point.
When Xal'atath shows herself by the queen's side, Alleria attempts to fire an arrow at Xal'atath, but it passes clean through her incorporeal body.
With their position revealed, and the nerubians in pursuit, they're forced to retreat.
We then enter a scenario to get out of the City of Threads. During this scenario, Anduin and Alleria talk about their struggles - especially Alleria's struggle to deal with what happened in Dalaran.
Anduin: Alleria, what happened back there? This isn't you.
Alleria: I had to take the shot! It was my chance to make up for Dalaran--for Khadgar!
---
Alleria: I don't expect you to understand what I'm dealing with.
Anduin: But I do. I know all about blaming myself for things I couldn't possibly control.
---
Anduin: Have you lost your--all right. Fine. Jumping it is!
As we escape out of the City of Threads by jumping into the abyss, a cutscene plays.
With an army of soldiers closign in on them, our heroes' only hope for escape is to jump from the city's edge into the waters deep below.
Anduin and the player jump first, but Alleria hesitates when Xal'atath shows herself.
Xal'atath attempts to convince Alleria to embrace the dark path.
Alleria hesitates for a moment but quickly rejects her, escaping off the cliffside into the waters with the others.
We meet up once again with Anduin and Alleria, and return to the Weaver's Lair to deliver our report to her. With this, the Weaver is pleased, with more members to her conspiracy against Queen Ansurek. This ends the Azj-Kahet storyline.
