Use the small Hot Oil vehicles on top of the wall to pour oil and light it on fire, killing hostiles on the Dread Wastes side of the wall.

If you happen to come to the wall and see all the pots are not clickable; that is because all the pots are now used by other players. wait until they release the oil pots and hop in. you can easily track the empty oil pots in your minimap.

Is this bugged? most of the mobs just seem to evade all the time, making it very irritating.

Most of these mobs seem to be bugged, they are evading every bucket I throw at them.
Some of the groups of mobs are working though, so keep trying if you get stuck on it.

Edit: I noticed that the ones running around aimlessly were all evading, but the few that were standing still in groups were all hit with no problem. Working as intended? /shrug

Do *NOT* use the pots on top of the actual gate. When you exit the "vehicle" it kicks you up and backward a ways (and off the narrow gate), causing you to fall to your death. If you use the ones on the wider towers you'll be fine.

Just as in Mission: The Abyssal Shelf with the bombs, for instance, if you're quick enough you can cast two buckets/torches before each ability cooldown.

EDIT: Just realised that it is possible to throw more than just two buckets/torches at once.

The torches have a longer CD than the oil. But flames from one torch will travel along connected oil-splashes. Flaming mantid on the run also light up pools of oil that they come across. So by setting up a few connected patches of oil for each torch, you can complete this quest very quickly.

This approach definitely makes the quest more interesting, I think!

An interesting quest. The quest itself is easy and fun but then if you use the guns on the Gate of the Setting Sun, you can't get down since you can't mount anywhere in the gun area of the Gate. Slow Fall to the wall is fine except for the mantid, which gang up on you and, even if you're pretty good, with level 725 gear, will eventually kill you and of course you can't mount in combat. Then you can't rez anywhere near your corpse or they will kill you again. An interesting challenge. You can jump off the wall and die elsewhere but you're in the middle of a pitched battle, so almost anywhere you rez, you'll immediately be killed again.

I found that if you rez on top of one of the battlements, the mantid will ignore you long enough to mount. Funny that the toughest part of the quest is how to survive the completion of it.

This is, for the most part, a test of your patience.

Mantids running around will just "evade." You have to wait for a few of them to line up in formation again, and then burn them.

It's possible to do this quest without having flying, although that would make it easier. The problem is getting up on the wall.

If you don't have any flight paths to the top of the wall, you can go to a place where the wall isn't too much higher than the ground. One place is west of Guo Lai Halls, at 13.0, 27.2. Either use your hearth stone so it is on cooldown or destroy it, then go to the location by the wall and use the "stuck character" feature to "kill" your character (your equipment doesn't take damage). While dead, you get a flying mount and you should be able to res high enough to get on top of the wall.

While on the wall, you can discover a flight path or two. There is a Shado-Pan location further north but it only connects to other Shado-Pan locations. (A door in the wall there makes it easy to reach the top of the wall from Kun-Lai Summit.) Horde characters can also learn a flight path to their PVP quartermasters' location on the wall. (The Alliance PVP quartermasters are too far south.) That can make it easier getting up on the wall the next time.

I don't know of any way to reach the guns for Bloodied Skies without flying, though. Also, be aware that it does not help to get up on the wall southwest of the Setting Sun garrison. It's easy to do that after you accept the first The Klaxxi reputation quest (The Klaxxi or The Klaxxi). That is a breadcrumb quest that gives you a flight path up on the wall. Unfortunately, though, a dungeon entrance blocks you from moving to the north from that location. BTW, if you go there and pick up and don't turn in the next quest in the Klaxxi chain (Nope), then you can run around like a maniac using the Shado-Pan Dragon Gun after you oil the mantids down, rather than staying up on the wall throwing torches. Mantids killed that way counted towards this quest, but not toward Spreading the Warmth, though. And be aware that dozens of pissed-off burning mantids can do a lot of damage in a hurry.

This quest seems to be glitched. when I jump on a pot the mantid disappear. When I mount and fly down they all reappear. to kill 80 mantid requires a long respawn time to get the only mantid that show up next to the gate..

Yet another bugged quest in that the torch does way too much damage (7k or more to 6,600 npc) and they die immediately rather than run around.
This makes it impossible to get the Spreading the Warmth achievement, and it's a pain having to traget individual groups.

For Spreading the Warmth achievement:

As of dragonflight - this seems to be fixed based on some of the other comments, the torch no longer kills them instantly, they run around again. My method: used the pot of oil ontop of the gate at 2.72, 62.85 (tomtom command: /way 2.72, 62.85) - use a bunch of the oil on as many groups surrounding that larger group of mantid on the left-ish. When I did it, there was a group in a T shape, maybe I just got lucky because the respawned groups were a bit smaller than that initial one.

Do way more than what you think you'll need just in case. I also did it on the patrolling mobs (the oil only lands on actual mobs not between them). Fire a single torch and watch it spread. You can keep throwing oil if you need it, but you should be good to go.

Description

The mantid are attacking again, and we're a bit short-handed up on the wall. In hopes that you'd help, I saved one of the more fun posts for you: the hot oil!

It's a bit more violent and a bit less scandalous than it sounds.

It's simple really. Get up on the wall, find one of the oil stations, and dump it on any of the mantid pouring up against the wall. It's very effective.
