Where might that secret vault be?
I don't read the quests unless I can't find what I need.

The Secret Vault is in Tiragarde Sound 65, 64

When I got there, I couldn't hand in the quest, had to abandon it, then go back and get it.

When you pick up the quest, check the map. If it shows the gold ? and the hand in location, you are good to go. Otherwise, abandon, then retake it.

Im not sure if blizz patched it or what, but when you do your beginning quests in Naz, and complete them, the npc gnome doesnt spawn near you anymore. You have to go near the flight master in the trade area of boralus, Tinkmaster Overspark, to start the quest.

If you start the quest while in a raid group, you cannot turn it in, the quest marker even remains in Boralus. Even if you return to the version of Overspark in Boralus, it won't complete the quest, you have to abandon and re-accept it.

I finally got this quest directly after finishing questline for Nazjatar World Quests. I'm sure this info must be in the fine print of a guide somewhere but I didn't find it. Hopefully this post is useful to someone.

I wanted to add my two cents as I've combed through many guides and found it hard to understand how to get this quest and start unlocking Mechagnomes as Alliance and a brand new player starting with Shadowlands. I had an issue since I started a lot of quest lines and didn't go far enough in some, and too far in others. You have to keep in mind that these quests cover all of BFA patches and new content intro, so you basically have to unlock all the BFA zones in order of their introduction in the 8.x patches. Here's a quick rundown of the steps from scratch.

1) Port into Boralus from SW and start the BFA questlines to unlock the Harbormaster map, and eventually the boat for the Zandalar Islands.
2) You need Friendly with the three BFA factions - do the Drustvar, Storm's Wake and Proudmoore storylines until you get Friendly with all three factions. You can trigger those from the map in the Harbormaster's Office in Boralus.
3) Along the way, you'll unlock Magni's quest to get you started on the Heart of Azeroth questline. Complete it until you get your Heart of Azeroth (hence the Silithus portal in Boralus).
4) Get your Footholds on all the islands of Zandalar - Vol'dun, Zuldazar, Nazmir. This is handled from the boat and via the command table, do all Zandalar islands.
5) In the midst of your footholds, you'll get the Island Expedition quests. Do that too.
6) Eventually you'll get a chance to go to Nazjatar when you start the questline with Genn Greymane and Jaina. Do the Nazjatar quests until you unlock the World Quests (A Tempered Blade is completed).
7) In the midsts of the Nazjatar quests, you'll get another heads' up from Magni to talk to MOTHER and upgrade your Heart of Azeroth. This takes you to Highmountain also. Complete that questline.
8) Eventually, if all these steps are done, you'll get the quest to start the Mechagon unlock (Fame waits for Gnome One) near the Flight Master in Boralus.
9) Follow better guides from there!

I have completed all (Champion of Azeroth, Nazjatar, and Mechagon) chain quests in BFA when I was Horde, then I changed my faction to Alliance in shadowlands, so I decided to go to Mechagon, and I found that no NPC there, I went back to the warfront ship in Boralus and found the first quest that sends me to Nazjatar's, it took me less than 10 minutes as LVL 60 to complete quests until World quests show in Nazjatar's, then a gnome came to me and gave me a quest which starts quests to Mechagon.

As far as I can tell you have to have Nazjatar world quests unlocked first, and you can do that chain by starting Essential Empowerment with Magni in Nazjatar @ Mezzamere after you've arrived in Nazjatar.

FYI - I wanted to to do the Mechagon world quests on my level 66 shadow priest, and It took me about 50 minutes to do all the quests. In insight, it was not a good use of my time. Blizzard should let us do it ONCE on the account, and unlock the zone for all our alt's.

Centuries ago, the last king of the gnomes, King Mechagon, led his followers in search of a mythical land of technology. He left no clue as to where he was headed, and over time his legend faded into history. This vault could be the first step to discovering King Mechagon's true fate! I must examine it firsthand.
