They 100% forgot about it the only reason they are talking about it now is because it's brought up so much. Blizzard forgets about a lot of things that happen in the story.
what? Haven't the goblins been scraped and put up for sale yet?
People are somehow dissatisfied that the planet was stabilised so fast after we spent an expansion triaging all the wounds while the druids and shaman healed the crust but simultaneously want us to have been able to remove a giant sword a god stuck in the planet within a year of it happening."The world is healing" doesn't mean everything is fine now, it means the worst of Azeroth's pain convulsions are gone and the planet is settling into a relative calm. They DEFINITELY need to do a better job at explaining this in game, but the sword still being there doesn't matter because Azeroth the planet is a protective shell around Azeroth the Titan; it's not like Azeroth herself had the sword stabbed into her, the sword just broke through a lot of her protection ball and caused an imbalance in the developing soul which we spent an entire expansion fixing in hundreds of little ways through island expeditions, quests, daily quests, world quests, raids and a battleground.
Could they cut it in half and have the bulk of the sword fall across Un'Goro crater and into Tanaris? We'd have a new sword highway to drive on. It'd be like felling a big tree.
Honestly I think they wanna save it for a big moment and have Azeroth wield it in the future. Given that at the moment we're going back to a more grounded story with Dragonflight, the sword likely isn't going to come into play.
The problem is that the Sword set up the entire premise of BfA: Sargeras wounding Azeroth and causing azerite to spill out. But since the end of Legion, we never really got any more development. Its yet another plot thats not wrapped up for whatever reason and it just doesn't make sense in terms of the game world.
Hot take but everything theyve done to close other story lines lately has been the deaths of multiple huge characters in like 10 second cutscenes. I wouldnt trust them to do anything with the sword other than just "Op its gone now no sword haha."
I have another question too... where is Azshara right now and what is she doing? Last time I saw her we let her escape from Nyalotha and went to claim "the true throne of power" whatever that means.
Lady Moonberry: But as the titans were imprisoning Sargeras, he plunged his sword into the Heart of Azeroth!Lady Moonberry: Fortunately, he didn't hit any major population centers.Featherlight: Next costume!Ysera: This cannot be...Awool: Wait, so there's a giant sword stuck in <player>'s world? How does that work?Choofa: It kinda goes in like "Shunk"?Slanknen: I was an environmental protector in life! You can't just stab a planet without serious repercussions to, well, everything!Choofa: Good point. How would you even make a sword that big anyway? Transmute another world?Awool: No idea. I don't think I want to meet this Sargeras guy.
They'll pull it out, Azeroth will inflate like a balloon, and the sword will be turned into a hunter weapon.
