Patch 4.2 is the first major
Cataclysm
content patch to introduce not only new raid bosses, but a new raid as well. Previously promised to us as planned for Patch 4.1, the Firelands raid with final boss Ragnaros himself has finally come! Seven unique boss encounters, two of which - Ragnaros' new Majorodomo, Fandral Staghelm, and the Firelord himself - we are already familiar with. The fights make use of a wide array of mechanics, one of which is the new resource bar system Blizzard introduced first with Atramedes/Cho'gall.
Raid groups who successfully kill the Firelands bosses will have a shot at a brand new Tier 12 armor set, 378/391-iLevel loot for Normal/Heroic difficulty, and some pretty epic Ragnaros loot that sports item level half a tier higher than anything else in the raid (384/397). The Tier sets will be designed with the Firelands theme in mind, so you should expect to see yourself walking amidst a lot of fire as you get more pieces; even the set bonuses feature fiery effects.
Finally, to help you gear up for the new raid, Baradin Hold will be expanding as Occu'thar makes the west wing/cell its home. The giant dog-meets-demon-meets-eyes hound has broken free from its cell and has gorged on other prisoners so much that it can't leave the room now. You will surely prove to be an accommodating party and relieve it of some Tier 12 pieces to make it easier for Occu'thar to leave.

Firelands
The Firelands are - in worldbuilding terms - an endless sea of molten lava, burning air, and the occasional island of scorching-hot rock. This realm, home of Azeroth's native fire elementals, is not part of our world, however. It was artificially created by the Titans when they defeated the Old Gods and their elemental servants to serve as an eternal prison for the latter. As one should expect, the fire elementals weren't exactly grateful for being imprisoned forever, and Ragnaros has been plotting revenge for the last 50-100 thousands of years. Now, as the Cataclysm sunders the boundaries between Azeroth and the Elemental Plane, the denizens of the Firelands are more than eager to invade our home and burn it all to ashes. It will be up to the Cenarion Circle, the Earthen Ring, and a few selected champions to stop the Firelord's army, push them back into the Firelands, and then defeat Ragnaros in the seat of his power, the Sulfuron Spire.

Matriach of the Cinderweb Brood, Beth'tilac and her merciless offspring sate their appetites by sucking the magma and fire from the corpses of elementals. To provide her broodlings with added sustenance, Beth'tilac has woven a network of incendiary webs throughout her lair to trap unsuspecting prey.

Rhyolith is one of the most ancient elementals in existence, born from the primordial fires that forged Azeroth itself. He is responsible for the creation of new elementals in the Firelands and still possesses a searing hatred of the titans for what he considers monumental arrogance in relocating him.

When Ragnaros's forces surged into Mount Hyjal, the green dragon Alysra betrayed her allies and helped the traitorous archdruid Fandral Staghelm. As a reward, she was purified with fire and reborn as a fearsome fire hawk.

The flamewakers are among the most feared elemental guardians in the Firelands. Shannox is no exception. Serving as the chief hunter and kennel master of Ragnaros's hell hounds, Shannox patrols the elemental realm with his two most ferocious beats: Riplimb and Rageface.

Baleroc earned a reputation as a merciless combatant during the elemental wars of ancient Azeroth. Now that he is confined to the Firelands, Baleroc's sanity has dwindled. Few elementals dare disturb him, fearful that they will become victim to his battlelust.

The loss of his son, Valstann, in the War of the Shifting Sands utterly shattered Fandral Staghelm's spirit. Now empowered by Ragnaros as the new Majordomo of the Firelands (replacing the deceased Majordomo Executus) and the leader of the treacherous Druids of the Flame, Fandral seeks to bring ruin to Azeroth rather than live in a world without his beloved child.

Ragnaros, lord of the Firelands, embodies the fury and destruction of the primordial infernos that forged Azeroth itself. Promised the chance to set Azeroth aflame without interference from Neptulon and Therazane, Ragnaros seeks to appease the Old Godsby incinerating the World Tree of Nordrassil.
He has legs now. Who knew?
