Thank god it's losing the daze, from a PvE standpoint at least.

This is insane on the beta right now. I'm leveling a pally, and I went prot just for fun, and this attack one-shots everything. I can round up three mobs, use it, and everything dies instantly. Time to go solo Deadmines.

Figured i actualy put in a note about this spell.

as 4.0 the avanger shield hits like a @#$%ing truck. For what i have seen is that a random lvl 60 paladin in nothing but 52-56 greens and blues + sm shield / Thay can easy crit 4k with this whic is freaking insane. i a not sure how high it can go for a lvl 19 twink etc tho buts its OP thats fo sure ;P

This allows me to fill both an offensive and a defensive role in PvP. Sure, Hammer of the Righteous and Crusader Strike help alot too, but this one is just the greatest. It hits massively, good range, silences and can be upgraded to daze. To me, Protection is my new, improved Retribution spec.

as of 4.0.1 the silencing effect from this ability does not decrease in duration with diminishing returns. Regardless of whether blizzard intended it or not, this should be fixed or else prot pallys will basically be able to silence their opponent most of the time especially with Grand Crusader talent (Grand Crusader)

Is it just me, or does this deal less damage than it says it should in the description? I have a 13 Draenei Paladin, and the in-game spell descripton says it should deal 173, but im getting around 100. Sorry if this is a nooby question.

Avenger's Shield (Level 13)... dealing 111 to 135 Holy damage

So if you're dealing slightly less dmg than 111 then the mob is absorbing some or its a minor bug.

This attack is massively overpowered as you can ALMOST 1hit toons at low lvls with a reletivly short CD.

Blizz must have changed something because the tooltip for Avenger's Shield in my spell book just mentions hitting one target and hopping to the next 2 closest mobs, but nothing about silencing them. I've tried using it in dungeons but mobs keeps casting. Is there a talent I'm missing for it?

As of 4.0.3 and possibly a little before Avengers Shield will no longer hit CC'd targets. This means you can safely fire it into a group of mobs where a rogue has sapped, mage polymorph, etc, etc without fear of hitting them.

Essentially it's become a "smart pull" and will only hit non CC'd targets.

Edit for clarity: Of course don't actually fire it at a CC'd target because that would break it. What I mean is that it will no longer "bounce" to targets which have been CC'd. You also want to avoid glyphing Dazing Shield because this slows down mobs - meaning that your casters will cover a shorter distance and probably won't make it into melee range before the effect wears off.

I'm a dps class and use Recount. Avenger's Shield does mad damage after every dungeon run. I'm impressed.

Change coming in Patch 4.1.0 to the Avengers Shield that procs from Grand Crusader

"Grand Crusader will now generate a charge of Holy Power if the Avenger Shield it procs is used within 6 seconds."

I am prot pally main spec.i confirm this hits mobs for as much as 19k dmg on each.My ilvl is 359 though,still i recall it nuked even wth 346 gear really hard.
Great for boss fights too like cho gall or nefarian by glyphing it for 30% more dmg where you need all the dps you can get,It hits for 14-15k non crit!

Well, as of the new patch... I watched closley when I cast this. And now that 'Sacred Duty' activates thru Avenger's Shield I obtain a holy power when gaining Sacred Duty buff. Anybody who got the same?

This spell is in the protection summaries, not the protection tree or trainer abilities.
Took me 10 minutes of utter confusion to realise this.

Every hit counts as a melee attack, meaning that all chance on hit trinkets and weapons will be able to trigger from this spell.

With 5.0.4 it appears on Cho'gal, the 2nd/3rd jump silences do not seem to be working on stopping worship (as in, as a tank, you Shield-toss Cho'gal and the 2nd and 3rd bounces hit your allies.. previously this would silence & interrupt the worship)

Perhaps it's just 5.0.4-is-brand-new issues that will get resolved, but wanted to throw this comment out there in case others experience the same thing

I believe that this spell is too strong, they should lower it's damage to NPCs by around 3-5% in my opinion, and I think that Blizzard should increase the cooldown from 15 seconds to about 20-30 seconds.

Just saying, but if ya think it's not right you may downgrade this post.

Apparently low level paladins were not OP enough, so Blizzard decided to buff them up more abit with Cataclysm

what dumb@ss thought it was such a good idea to introduce this at level 10, i do not know
It also blanket-silences now(3 second lockout), which is even more annoying if you are playing a caster class and knocks out 1/3 or 2/3 your hp

at low levels a horde paladin can essentially CC you for about 15 seconds
1) this ability
2)his stun
3)his racial move
4)Engineering device

Now i know and understand paladins were always OP(in any blizzard game*, and esp in WoW), but i dont want to be forced to play one in low level bgs...but it seems like blizz wants you to play one

You cant just have high damage, surivivability,strong self heals and a wtf 6 second stun
please also revert low level Hammer of justice to Rank 1 so it stuns for 3 seconds instead of 6 like it used to with the spell rank system

Paladin tank here to clarify a few things about my most iconic ability.

Only the initial target is interrupted and silenced; others only take damage. Divine Toll launches five separate shields, each of which will interrupt and silence their initial target.
Avenger's Shield is far more than an interrupt. Currently in SL, it's damage, absorb (with First Avenger), holy power and legendary interactions. It's looking to be comparably powerful in DF.
Since it does all these amazing things, and its cooldown can be reset through Grand Crusader, we are typically very eager to press it. Holding on to it makes our lives more difficult.
Since we're happy to throw it at any mob casting anything (or nothing), we are simultaneously the most powerful interrupters and the worst ones to coordinate with.
We still have Rebuke as a standard interrupt that we will happily hold on to for the right spell.
Given that we have two interrupts, sometimes a raid encounter is simplified by making us cycle Avenger's Shield and Rebuke to keep a particular monster interrupted, even if it makes things a little awkward for us.
~~We do not benefit from interrupting (unlike, say, demon hunters), but we suffer from holding on to Avenger's Shield. I hope I have emphasized this enough by now =)~~ With the advent of Punishment, we do benefit, if that is talented.
~~If a paladin tank is assigned to solo interrupting a monster, but you happen to have a spare interrupt and want to use it, you will not make the paladin's life harder.~~ If they are running Punishment, at least ask.

Our Avenger's Shield's bouncing range is pretty far now. So how to avoid pulling mob groups adjacent to your targets in dungeons? Remember, the Avenger's Shield will only bounce among targets in combat if you cast it on a target in combat, and among any targets it can find (in combat and out-of-combat) if you cast it on a target out-of-combat.

Therefore, you can carefully pulled closely placed groups of mob using Hand of Reckoning or Judgment, and then cast Avenger's Shield in the next GCD. This way, Avenger's Shield will only bounce among the mobs already in combat, and the adjacent mobs not in the aggro chain won't be pulled.
