I know this seems like a no-brainer to some, but I just ran into someone who didn't know this so I figured I'd post it here for folks just getting into the game. Make sure that you take the time to put the icon for this on your hotbar, as well as for any other profession you might undertake. You'll find the icon in your Spellbook under the "General" tab. It will save you a lot of time in the future.

Smelting

You have the precious metal, you can smelt it into bars that can be used for creating armor, weapons, or other items through the blacksmithing or engineering skills.
Find yourself a forge. They are located in main towns and some smaller towns. If you can't find one, ask around to determine their locations. To confirm you have in fact found a forge, move your mouse over the location and see if it says "forge". You can also try smelting the metals. You do not need to interact with the forge; you only need to be near it.

Now that you have found a forge, its time to smelt the metal. Open up your abilities book and locate the smelting icon. Press that to see your recipes. Some examples of what you can create with smelting are: converting copper ore into copper bars and creating bronze by combining copper bars and tin bars. To gain additional smelting recipes/options, you will need to learn them from a mining trainer. The mining screen will tell you how many of each bar that you can smelt based on the types and amounts of raw material that you have.

A quick sidenote, you can learn how to smelt Dark Iron Ore. That's right, all you need to do is run Blackrock Depths until the room with the 7 Ghosts. You will need to bring 20 Gold Bars, 2 Star Rubies and 10 Truesilver Bars to Gloom'rel before the fight actually starts and you will learn to smelt Dark Iron. Smelting Dark Iron requires smelting it at the Black Forge, located close to the Molten Core raid instance deep within Blackrock Depths. To make 1 Dark Iron Bar, you need 8 Dark Iron Ores.

After 2.4 smelting ores has a longer range to get mining skill ups. Smelting can get mining up to 290 (thorium). After that, you would have to smelt Dark Iron in BRD.

Still, any low level alt can get mining to 290, without setting foot outside the capital, after a few visits to the AH.

I still do all the mining out in the field because I use the ore for leveling alt's professions. If you just need a miner to make money, smelting is an option.
