The Panflute places a 15 minute debuff on each critter, and when it expires, they de-spawn. Playing the flute again doesn't refresh this. The critters do not follow you into instances or after hearthing (they are classified as "minions" while you control them).

For a bit of fun around Stormwind, pick up 泰卡頓 and the large pack of 馴服的綿羊 with him.

For some odd reason, most critters won't follow while you're mounted; and it doesn't matter if you're on the ground or in the air. When you mount up, they'll simply stop moving, but when you unmount, they'll rejoin you (assuming you haven't ran so far away that they despawned).

As far as I can tell, this only applies to level 1 critters. Level 3 critters, like the Swine outside of Orgrimmar, have absolutely no problems with chasing you around on your mount.

Interestingly enough, this works on Darnassus-aligned, PVP flagged, 幽光.
Also works on the 4 達拉然下水道烏龜. Doesn't work on the 達拉然下水道老鼠.
Works on 珊納 and possibly its 'clones'.
Works on 梣谷橡木 LOL. Unfortunately, they're still rooted.
Works on 丘爪的雞 Even the ones on your farm.

With the 小動物變形術雕紋, you can polymorph flying creatures and have flying sheeps/turtles/pigs/penguins/bears following you!

If anything, I've noticed you can't get critters who are level 80 or above.

I'll add more if I find more interesting critters to dominate as my minion.

i don't know if this is intended, but for me at least they'd stop following me and just sit there if i'd mount up, so if your army of cats/penguins/disease infested rodents ditches you before the time is up and you didn't just fly off that's probably why. seems kind of odd.

I can't help but wonder how the screenshot with the sheep in Stormwind was made. For me they seem to despawn every time I switch between zones, thus despawning if I enter Stormwind.

(Though I have to admit it would be highly exploitable, dragging whatever you like to wherever you like for whomever you like to capture it. There goes my dream of a herd of Swamprush Rodents dragged across two zones and into the Shrine of Two Moons for everyone to enjoy. This is probably exactly the reason it doesn't affect pokemon. I'm also the reason Patrannache no longer aggros. >.<)

Okay, seems I was having a little trouble using it. (I still can't use it to grab pokemon but here's some info in case anyone is having the problem I was.)

1. This item does not give you any kind of buff that draws in critters when you're near, in case you assumed so. Instead, it places the status on the critter: Panflute Melody

2. The critter has to be near you when you play the flute. If it does not hear you play the flute, it won't follow you.

3. ...so, you cannot get multiple critters on a single use unless they're very close to each other. You must travel between critters and play the flute each time to gather each one.

This is the reason for the 1-minute cooldown, 15-minute duration.

4. Oddly enough, if you try to combo this with Hozen Idol the Idol goes on cooldown, but nothing happens.

5. You can ruin the quest Chasing the Chicken for everyone else by using this. (Though they'll likely hotfix it soon. Have your fun while it lasts.)

This item does not work on critters that are capturable. So don't waste your cooldown on a pack of 4 if they can be battled, like me. :(

Some critters can be gathered up by aggroing them with no-damage spells sush as purge or wind shear. Use these to pull many more within range before using the flute. (Works mainly on aquatic critters, such as frogs, turtles.)

Another great place to use this is on the penguins on the iceberg in Borean Tundra. The iceberg is east of the alliance starting base in the ocean!

As of the most recent patch, 5.3 Escalation, you can now use this and mount up - flying or regular - and your minions will follow you!

Just tested and confirmed, I had 24 Flutterwings flying around behind me near Nuizao Temple!

Can be used in combat, im a engineer hunter(i know so original!) so i added this to my macro for my glove snapyse springs, so now i play the flute whenever my gloves get used!

p.s. doesnt incur a GCD.

If you use the Panflute on a critter that has a capturable pet following it, the critter will become entranced but the capturable pet will continue following the entranced critter (e.g., the two Sifang Otters running around together near Yan-Zhe River in Valley of the Four Winds ).

Using this places a 15-minute debuff on nearby critters, transforming them into your minions. The good news about this is that you can't accidentally wipe-out your Squirrel Army (you know who you are... Janitor) with an AoE attack. The bad news is that your enemies can. Any cleave or AoE directed at you will likely take down most if not all of your little buddies, so stay away from hostiles if you don't wish to inadvertently lead them to their demise. As minions, your critters can also benefit from party-only buffs and heals, which can give some very impressive numbers with things like 神性之星. It's also hard to beat a levitating Squirrel Army.

Once enthralled, critters will follow you through thick and thin, on land and by air. At least... for a while. Sooner or later they seem to get snagged on scenery or otherwise lose your scent and disappear. So if you're hoping to hold onto them for the full 15 minutes, lead them carefully.

Using the flute itself also plays a fairly neat sound effect, causes your character to /cheer, and causes a hymn-like graphical effect around them.

Finally, note that when it says critters, it means critters. Battle pets not included!

All in all definitely one of the better champion drops. Highly recommended.

You can't have more than thirty (30) critters at any time. i.e. If you try to control nine (9) more, nine (9) critters you already control will despawn.

Be warned as that any AoE attack made by a mob while you have these critters entranced MAY kill them.

This item cannot be sold to a vendor and, interestingly enough, if destroyed, it does not appear in "Item restoration" list (a feature by Blizzard to get back sold/deleted by accident items).

Panflute Curiousities:

- Flying critters will fly with you (like butterflies) however,
- Nonflying Critters will also follow you - simply on the ground. Good to know for those of us who hate losing pets due to mount speed.
- Critters will form a semicircle around you, in order from first charmed to last. They were on the animal's left to right (IE: your right to left if you were staring at your character's face)
- Critters count as your "minions" and will show up on your minimap.
- You will be dismounted when you cast. Just FYI,
