I just did a race change and this hat disappeared from my bags. When you do race change, your quest log is going to reset and also quest items, and this is a quest item for some reason. I asked GM to give me my hat back but he havent answer yet, i hope im going to get my hat back :(

Using this item will transform you into a npc you found during the long quest line who was also an apprentice. So far I got Darwyn, Henny, the female goblin back at the camp, the night elf as you ride up to his asylum and the DK - looking human.

Here are a few things of interest about the item (some of these are from other comments posted here).

~~You can remove the hat after you have transformed and the transformation will stay.~~ (removed this ability)
The duration of the transformation is 30 minutes. This means you can always be transformed since the duration and cooldown are the same length.
The transformation only shows your weapons. The rest of your look is determined by the transformation.
The item is marked as a Quest Item so be careful not to throw it away on accident.
All emotes you do while transformed are those of the race and gender you are transformed into.
Druid forms cause you to lose the transformation. This is likely true of any class transformation.
Deathbringer's Will does not cause you to lose the transformation buff. When the Deathbringer's Will effect wears off you will return to your transformed state.
This is a reward to a Horde quest. If you race change you will lose the item since it is labeled as a quest item. As long as you are still Horde a GM can restore the item for you.

Just a note, if you Race change after you complete this quest the item will be removed. This is because it is considered a quest item. Not sure if blizzard will refund the item but I have a ticket open. Hopefully they will change this to a white item instead of a quest item as it doesn't have any other current uses for quests in the game.

Edit: Just read that Leggomyeggo posted about this. Hopefully a GM will refund it.

Semi-long quest chain, lots of the quests are fun, and not too spread out. Druid shape shifts DO cancel the buff. Logging out however, does not.

So far I've gotten the following apprentice disguises:

Male Orc
Female Troll
Female Bloodelf
Female Goblin
Female Human
Male Bloodelf
Male Undead
Male Gnome

Not sure if there are more, although I do like the fact that you can get the opposing faction disguises. Haven't seen a Worgen, Tauren, Dranei, or Night Elf appear from the hat yet. I assume they can though.

It says that the quest is Priest and Shaman only.

Do not race change after getting this item, you cannot re obtain it, and it gets deleted from your bag, also contacting a GM will not help:-

Just did all these quests on my alt hunter.

You can start them at level 15 and you will end up beeing level 19 (with +20% from heirlooms) if you do the whole quest line so this is perfect for level 19 twinks isntead of having to spend a lot of money on Deviates!

item tends to loose its effectiveness at higher levels, and by that i mean the higher level you are the fewer wizards apprentices you can change into
keep getting the same goblins for some reason

that or im insanely unlucky.... that helps the self esteem

also note, npcs/mobs/stuff will refer you to the race/gender you change to when you use this item which is interesting because i always thought your race was IDed at a database level, not a physical model level

Confirmed. The hat WILL be removed if you race, or faction change. Furthermore, you cannot do the quest again because it knows that you've already completed it.

In my opinion, it seems very obvious that this should be a quest reward, and not a quest item.

A quest item should be, and is in almost all circumstances, an item that you use to complete a quest.

If you have the Dingy Wizard Hat left over after finishing the questline and still wonder how to get the Faded Wizard Hat, simply go check out Azuregos in Northern Azshara who has the quest Farewell, Minnow that leads to the hat!

So I was going to faction swap, and I had this item in my inventory. Spoke to a GM pre-faction swap about this item and was told it would be restored to me, changed factions, item was gone (although I still had the skin of the hat on my character's head, just not in my inventory) and I opened a ticket.

GM proceeded to tell me I can't have the hat because it's 'Horde Only', even though I have the Tauren Paladin Greatsword of the Sunwalker and the Shovel of Mercy in my bags as well.

Way to be consistent Blizz.

While doing the questline for this item you can complete several achievements:

火焰懲罰之暴食者
冰霜懲罰之暴食者
暗影懲罰之暴食者

And after finishing it, you can take a 兜風 to take another achievement :)

I did this with my 85 pala and was never been to Azshara really since Cata, I found about the achievements during the questline.

Nice of Blizz to nerf this item. Put something fun into the game and then remove it just because people whine.

They could have at least made it similar to Iron Boot Flask - 30 min use for example but 1 hour cooldown to prevent it being constantly used.

It is a sad day for this hat. Blizzard has killed the fun. Simply putting on the hat, using it, and putting your normal helm back on no longer works. This item now behaves like the Orb of Deception where you must be wearing the item to keep the buff/disguise.

Turns out, the hat's aftereffect (along with the purple coloration of the Reins of the White War Talbuk, although the bugged color is being reinstated) were just bugs to begin with, unintentionally making it into the game. I knew about the Talbuk mishap as of a few days ago, but I just now came across an explanation from Vaneras regarding the removal of the buff:

Actually, it was a bug that the buff wasn't removed when you took off the hat, a bug which we have now fixed.

We totally understand that this must be quite upsetting to some of you guys who have been used to the functionality of this hat until now, but we are most likely not going to revert this fix. It is our intent that all transformations of this type are limited to either a duration or tied to an item that must be equipped.

It should hopefully come as good news that we plan to include more transformation items in patch 4.1, and I also shouldn't forget to mention that we did already put an item, Kalytha's Haunted Locket, on a vendor in Azshara... this item is available to players of both factions and it can to turn you into a Night Elf ghost.

So there you have it, only a vanity item now :(

If you faction swap from horde to alliance, this item goes away I found out :( As do other items such as poison extraction totem ...although that is a quest item, not a quest reward, so a little bit different.

By the way, as for Blizz not wanting people to sport opposite faction looks in BGs etc, I just did a few BGs on my male orc as a female draenei from the engineer transporter debuff. Lasted the whole hour in spite of several deaths. This has been in the game for years so that can't be the reason. Anyway, the alliance players didn't seem to be deterred from attacking me. I got pwned left, right and centre, being a noob at lock PvP with crap green PvE gear! lol

They quote the Furblog transformation rod, but it's hardly the same thing, especially when the Horde can get one that's pretty much the same from Timbermaw with exalted rep while Alliance have no way of getting this item or anything with a remotely similar effect.

The Timbermaw item is most definitely inferior to Dartol's Rod of Transformation, which is no longer available to the Alliance either, but this hat is far superior to both in terms of "fun" as well as utility, as it allows you a permanent appearance change while performing most normal actions (apart from druids, sorry guys).

I do find it somewhat disappointing that the achieve ments are available for Alliance, the relevant NPCs are friendly to both factions, and yet the Alliance does not have access to this chain or, apparently, even the achievements (even if they were to travel to Azshara to attempt it).

At the same time, Withers - ironically a reward from a strongly anti-Horde quest at the end of a fairly long quest chain - is available to Horde players without completing said quest chain, which the Alliance needs to do to obtain him (and the cost is only 30 silver, to boot).

I just received confirmation from a GM in-game. With two petitions, the first GM mailed me the item, and, upon looting it, it turned into a Solid Gold Coin. The second GM spoke with me via whisper and confirmed that it counts as a "faction-specific" quest item and will not transfer.

I was just transformed into this Male Blood Elf model, with all of my own gear. Nice touch for a great item. I'm a 20 f2p Priest, so not swapping out hats without losing the buff is not an issue for me. My favorite is the Male Orc costume - you just don't see a lot of Orc Priests.

You can do the gender bender trick with this item.

If you transform into the opposite gender, it'll keep it in mind and when using items like 美味變異點心 or 辛多雷寶珠 you will keep the current sex!
(Male tauren transforming into female goblin apprentice and uses 美味變異點心 will transform into female pirate/ninja)

I am going to get a faction change on my horde mage soon to alliance what will happen to this item when i do that. will it just disappear. Though the Quest item to turn yourself into a furbolg back before cataclysm, a horde had it, he showed me the item it wasnt the new one with a one hour CD either because he used it again after 1 min. so maybe this won't disappear when i get my FC.

Update: Well this was a long time ago I forgot to update this my faded wizard hat got turned into a gold coin, Disappointing but I still don't regret the change at all.

I did a faction change on the 5.2 PTR from Blood Elf to Worgen with this item in my inventory. Having tracked exactly where in my inventory it was, I realized it'd been replaced with a 純金幣. Bummer.

I haven't seen anyone mention turning into Will Robotronic https://www.wowhead.com/mop-classic/npc=35648#.. Not actually an apprentice (tho' he wants to be). He gives you the quest Shear Will https://www.wowhead.com/mop-classic/quest=14249. I've turned into him many times.

I Faction changed Alliance and some months later back to Horde and i saw then that the Hat was gone and opened a GM ticket for a Restore and the Game Master restored it without a Question

Hopefully blizzard will add this to the toy box, though it is doubtful due to it being faction specific and an equip item ("Equip item" being the fact it has a model instead of being an invisible item like a trinket or ring, they've made it so trinkets turn into regular items, such as orb of deception becoming like orb of the sin'dorei so you activate it from your bags, but this is a helmet and consequentially has a model so it's doubtful).

This item is currently a toy in the WoD Beta and effectively functions as it used to ages ago. Click the Faded Wizard Hat in your toy box to turn into one of the apprentices for 30 minutes with a 30 minute cooldown. It is labeled as Horde only and does not need to be equipped (being a toy now and all).
