To get this schematic, you must keep buying gnomish engineer renewal gifts until you are lucky enough to obtain it.

Remember, you can renew your card multiple times without waiting 2 weeks by throwing your card away and buying it again at the gnomish engineering trainer for 2 gold.

Then, about 24 hrs later, you will receive the renewal gift.

The chances of getting the schematic when you open it are pretty slim, so be prepared to use up a lot of gold if you want to get this really badly.

When you do get the schematic, the mats aren't as hard to obtain (except maybe the fused wiring), but spending lots of gold for a non-combat pet might not be worth it, but if you've got a lot of gold, and nothing else to spend it on, that robot does look pretty cool.

The Lil'smokey recipie is quet a challange to get, renew your card mulitiply times, is so expensive, so if u dont got a lot of money, DONT begin to renew. When you look at your money bag, you just see that you started with 200g and only got 10g left.. I know a guy that did like that, and he went so angry when i got it in first try. But maybe try it one, two, maybe three times, but dont make it a "sport" if you know what i mean.. you can get everything in that gift from mithril chasing to this recipie. And its the same thing with pet bombling, which the goblin engineers can get, it all remain on how lucky you are that day, and i was really luckey that day i found the lil'smokey recipie in my mail box.
But think before renewing your card.. A lot of money could dissapear in no time...

If you drop goblin to take gnomish you can't get this pet because the membership card-gnome quest will never be available to you because you never did their pre quests.

You can however still do the goblin membership card quest if you later switch to gnome, and vice versa.

I tried for this schematic by the process listed in the top post by Lokibh. I only renewed it 7 times, then got bored of the process. Next day I logged in and had 7 of the Gnome Engineer's Renewal Gift. Opened it, got a grant total of 6 Mithril Casings, 3 Mithril Tubes, 1 Schematic: Parachute Cloak... and 2 Schematic: Lil' Smoky... lol

I started lmao'ing because I know it's such a low drop rate, and before learning i could just drop and renew as many times as i wanted, I must had renewed at least 30 times yet never got one... So you could get extremely lucky!

"Engineers can now obtain the schematics for Lil' Smoky and the Pet Bombling from certain creatures found in Gnomeregan. Specialized Gnomish or Goblin engineers can obtain both schematics equally. The repeatable quest that used to randomly grant these schematics has been disabled."

Taken from the PTR Patch notes on 27.3.2009. So come 3.1, you can obtain both of these recipes just by farming Gnomeregan. Not sure what mobs will drop the schematics but a good thing after all. I might have to take up engineering now :D

Just went to Gnomeregan on the Live server, patch 3.1.0. I cleared out all of the Nullifiers in the hallway just before Thermaplugg, didn't get the drop, reset the instance and did the same and it dropped from the third one. As also stated, the Pet Bombling schematic dropped off of Thermaplugg.

Did 3 runs in Gnomeregan to get this schematic. Only went to kill the Arcane Nullifier X-21, located in the last stretch of hallway right before the entrance to Thermaplugg's room. It should only be dropped by those mobs only, as the pet does have the same model.

As Horde, to get to Gnomeregan, I picked up the Chief Engineer Scooty quest in Orgrimmar at the engineer trainer, went to Booty Bay, talked to Scooty, and got Goblin Transponder in order to use the teleporter to get to Gnomeregan.

I ran the instance once, somehow picked up the Workshop Key after downing the last boss, Thermaplugg. If you don't get the schematic from the mobs the first run, just use the key to get to the exit of the instance, reset instance, and walk back in the shortest way to get a fresh new set of mobs; you don't have to run the whole instance again, just the last hallway stretch.

Also to be sure to down Thermaplugg to get Pet Bombling (supposedly 100% drop rate, got mine the first time and did not bother to kill him the last 2 times). Pickup the Rig Wars (rare-blue item reward quest, not engineering-only I believe) from the engineering trainers in Orgrimmar if you want more reputation from Horde and/or like to do quests you'll end up doing anyway.

lil smoky is either still gnomish only (likely... and goblin or non-engineer won't see it) or a darn low drop rate....

Wasn't sure if goblin engineers could get this or not, so I headed over to gnomeregan just to give it 30 min odd. First Peacekeeper Security Suit I killed dropped it, not sure if it was extreme luck or if they have a high drop rate aswell.

I ran Gnomer today (May 17, 09) and picked up both Lil Smokey and Pet Bombling. We had 2 smokeys drop and the bombling dropped off the last boss. All in the same run. So they must have increased the drop rate.

Directions to Schematic from Main Entrance
Get to main entrance by entering Gnomer grounds and heading West.

Follow corridor to Hall of Gears. Jump down or use southern ramps.
West. Follow corridor until Launch Bay. Kill Peacekeeper Security Suits above and below. Jump down when finished.
South. Follow corridor and kill Arcane Nullifiers until you hit "Final Chamber" (enter for boss to drop a Bombling schematic).
Turn back and follow corridor until you see a smaller corridor on the right. Enter, follow.
Take elevator up. Don't go straight, turn left or right and follow circle around to the boss Crowd Pummeler 9-60. Kill.

I've been entering Gnomer by the workshop and killing Crowd Pummeler 9-60 for about... 8 times, and it never dropped.

I started killing all the mobs that look like him. On the first run I got nothing, and on the 2nd run, it dropped from one of the Nullifier on the other side of the door leading to the "last" boss.

It took me 5 resets. To better my chances I killed Crowd Pummeler 9-60s + Arcane Nullifier X-21s + the Peacekeeper Security Suits along the way. Taking the back door I turned left directly before the elevator. This leads to Pummeler (atlas helps). Then I continued that direction and took the first left which leads into the large circular room that lies before the tunnel to Thermaplugg - this is where i found the Peacekeeper Security Suits (only 1 or 2). Then i continued down the passageway to Thermaplugg, going up and down both sides of the ramp killing Arcane Nullifiers. It was tedious but i finally got it. Just keep trying and hopefully you are more lucky than i was!

If you enter through the Train Depot and go through the Engineering Labs, there's an elevator at the end that will take you through a small tunnel which opens into the tunnel right before the workshop. This is where the nullifiers live, get you one! This is the quickest route to get to the nullifiers and back out to reset the instance.

One of the techniques I used was to stand on the upper platform close to the end (near the workshop door) and aggro one of the mobs on the lower area. If you are sufficiently far away from the ramp leading up to the workshop door, the mob will instead run all the way up the tunnel and around to the upper ledge, then all the way back to you, dragging the entire tunnel with it. It usually takes about a minute for them to reach you, but you can almost wipe out the entire tunnel in one AoE.

This drop rate is a bit higher than wowhead suggests, or I'm just extremely lucky. I ran Gnomeregan, and on my 1st mob kill I got the schematic, I didn't pick it up, because I wanted to know the drop rate. It dropped again after 5 kills. Didn't pick it up and after 8 more kills I got it again. I looted it this time.

In one Gnomeregan run I reckon it's easy to get this and the Schematic: Pet Bombling

I'm not sure about the drop rate on the bombling though.

I have been told and have read from a few sources that ti no longer matters if you are gnome or goblin engineering that it will drop for both.

But as of yet, my max skill goblin engie has yet to see it drop from the mobs it is listed to drop from.

Just did 2 runs through Gnomer trying to get my wife these plans. They didn't drop at all, either run! I'm thinking possibly because I was an engineer as well, with these plans already? I would think they would show up for her though regardless... but with all the talk about it dropping multiple times... why in 2 runs, did we not see it at all? Previous walk-throughs miss two Peacekeeper Security Suits that patrol the upper floor of the Launch Bay. So here's the best route including those two:

Enter via the Workshop back door and follow the corridor though to the square Engineering Labs.
Take the left just before the lift, go 1.5 sides of the square clockwise and kill Crowd Pummeler 9-60.
Carry on round another 1.5 sides clockwise and take the left towards the Launch Bay.
Turn right into a room full of aeroplanes and then rather than turn left again into the Launch Bay, head straight on, up the slope to the upper floor of the Launch Bay.
Do a full circle of the upper floor, killing the two Peacekeeper Security Suits en-route.
When you've done a full circle, head back down the ramp you came up, back to the aeroplane filled room. This time turn right (NW) and head towards the lower floor of the Launch Bay.
In the centre of the Launch Bay, one more Peacekeeper Security Suit pats - so kill that.
Just clockwise from the entrance you came through, is the path leading towards Mekgineer Thermaplugg. Head down the left (higher) path, killing all Arcane Nullifier X-21s en-route.
When you reach the end of the tunnel, if you need Schematic: Pet Bombling pop in and kill Mekgineer Thermaplugg in Tinkers' Court.
Then head back up the centre (lower) path back to the Launch Bay - killing the remaining Arcane Nullifier X-21s
That's them all done - so either run out (quickest is to go Launch Bay -> Aeroplane Room -> Engineering Labs -> Workshop back door) or HS out and repeat until you have both schematics.

That all sounds long, but should only take a few mins to run through at high level. Good luck!

Seems the droprates were increased, I was levelling my paladin and seeing these drop for engineers only, hopped on my 85 DK and got both patterns in 2 runs. Also, not sure if this was mentioned, the workshop no longer needs a key, so it's very easy access.

Edit: Also, I know this was answered but it was asked again after- I'm a goblin engineer, it doesn't matter if you have either specialization or no specialization, you can get both schematics.

For Hordes : My Engineer toon is 哥布林工程師. I got this recipe today ( 2011 May 07 )

Portal from "Grom'gol" seem removed, maybe because of Zul'Gurub new things in the zone.
So my only way is fly there .. and jump into lift .. died there once.

I kill only 3 types of mobs listed here in wowhead ( to save time ). Got 結構圖:發條娃娃 drop from 保安防護組件 after killing almost all of them.

Portal used to be in Booty Bay, not Grom'Gol but it's a moot point. They've removed it and the quests that taught you to use it. Instead, they've now put a brand new shiny portal in Grom'Gol, just outside the inn/zep tower! No quests required, either. Yay!

The portal to Gnormergan still exists for the Horde; it is located in Grom'gol base camp.

Keep in mind that if you're on the Zul'Gurub quest line, the entire Stranglethorn zone (both north and south) phase, and you will not be able to see or use the teleporter. Once you no longer have the ZG quests in your log (either by completing or abandoning them), you will once again be able to see and use the teleporter to get to Gadgetzan.

The teleporter will always take you in the front door, and exiting by either instance portal will take you back to grom'gol, so the guide listed above starting from the back door won't work. The easiest way to farm the pattern starting from the front door is as follows:

1) Run in, jump down into the lower area with the oozes. You'll take a good chunk of falling damage, but it shouldn't kill you.
2) Run through the hallway with the mechanized sentries (if you're going back through troggs or the clean zone, you're going the wrong way). You'll exit this hallway at the upper floor of the launch bay.
3) Run around the launch bay, kill the two peacekeeper security suits in the launch bay.
4) Head to the engineering bay, kill the Crowd Pummeler.
5) Head toward the lower floor of the launch bay; kill all peacekeeper security suits.
6) Run down the lower part of the path toward the final chamber, kill all arcane nullifiers along the way. Once you reach the door to the final chamber, run back and kill the arcane nullifiers along the upper part of the path.
7) once you've killed everything, head to the back door and exit the instance.

It's a longer path than the one Uroon gives, and it's undoubtedly better to use his path starting from the back door... but as Horde, that means flying in through Gnomergan. This is just a modified version of his path starting from the front door, for people who want to use the Teleporter instead of messing around with Dun Morgoh as Horde.

Confirmed for patch 5.2, dropped by Arcane nullifier first time, followed by Pet Bombling from Thermaplugg. At least they didn't nix this recipe the way they did the tranquil mechanical yeti! And as an additional note, I took the port at Gromgol and inside on the ledge above the oozes there was a S.A.F.E.『降落傘』S.A.F.E. parachute so I jumped off, clicked it in my bag, and took no fall damage. However my pet ran down to me and aggroed the entire gnomer upper level so be smarter than me and dismiss it first :)

This was my last recipe I needed and finally got it today. I was lazy farming it because I sort of hate Gnomeregan with a passion. My Ackis Recipe List add on now shows me having 100% of all recipes on my main character with all my professions. Blacksmithing, engineering, cooking, and first aid. Grats to myself!

I just thought people who are trying to get this robot should know...dont start trying to get this thing unless you have a LOT of money to burn. Sure, its possible that you can get this on the first renewal, but its not likely. I for one have spent over 110g so far, and still no schematic. What's funny is, I have gotten EVERYTHING else that is possible to get from the gift renewals...All the BS stuff (mitiril tubes, etc), parachute cloak, and even the lame "catseye goggles" which according to thoughtbott is even more rare of drop then lil smokey.
I cant really tell you how frustarting it is everyday when I play...to go the mailbox (24 hours later) to check my 10 gifts (I renew my membership 20g at a time) and get the same old crap over and over. Its like playing the lotto with this thing, and your chances of winning are extremly slim.
Some guy on here said he spent over 200g before he got his, and I bet the average overall is about 50g. Sadly, im gonna keep trying for this thing simply because its practically an EPIC item. There is probably no more than 5 people that have them on any given server, and they are also the only small pet I think that makes noises, effects, etc. Ill post back here when and IF I get this damn thing, but im guessing with my luck I will have the record for most gold spent trying...

I finally got my lil smokey today after probably spending more than (most likely) anybody ever has on him...240 gold. I went crazy yesterday and decided to renew my memebership 30 times in 1 day after failing to get it so many times at the rate of 10 renewals a day. It paid off, but thats a hella a lot of money to spend for a pet robot. I hope nobody else has to go through the same hassle I went through to get this thing...and I envy all of you that got him in your first try, cause you just saved yourself an arm and a leg...

To the post above, yes you and your friends were all just lucky. I dont think the drop rate in the mail is 4% like thoughbott said (probably a little higher, around 8-10%) but it defintly isnt normal to get it on your first try. Average is 10-30 renewals. Then you got the people like me who never have any luck in this game at all, and it takes well over 50+ renewals.

I don't remember for sure how much I've spent on my Gnome engineering character (Gnome Warlock) renewing hoping to get this, but all I keep getting are Unstable Triggers and Mithril Casings! I don't think I've received anything else yet except those items, and its getting on my nerves.

You have to wait 24 full hours after you renew, then you will get a gift in the mail. You can do this 30 times in 1 day if you want (and get 30 gifts the next day). It can be real frustrating since its is a low mail rate, but it will be well worth in the end trust me. If it was a high drop rate, you would see them all over the place which would make them lame just like the worg pup/spider hatchling.
Im still the only person ive seen on my server with it. Im sure there is more, just never seen them in 5 months of having him. I hope they never change it, its probably the rarest pet in the game with the pet bombling.

Well, you will all hate me, but when I hit 375 in engineering, I went to learn the schematics, and BOOM, i got the schematic.

I renewed my membership twice in the process of levelling to 375, so I didn't spend anything trying to get this specifically.

Kind of nice considering the obscene amount of gold I spent to get my skill this high...

This is how you get Lil'Smoky Schematic: first of all, you dont have to be a gnome to have gnome engineering, but if you are a gnome, it increases your engineering skills by 15. after your level your engineering up to 200, you will have a choice between choosing Goblin, or Gnome engineering. Both have advantages and disadvantages, certain goblin and gnome engienering items can be traded even though your not a goblin engineer someone who is could make you something and then give it to you. After you renew your engineering card (Gnome not Goblin) you will later get a gift for renewing it. Inside the gift could be: mithril casing, unstable trigger, and so on. But there is a 30% chance you could get the schematic for Lil'Smoky. And that is how it is done.

i'm fairly sure its the same thing as the pet bombling except for gnomish engineers. every time you renew your membership, you will be sent a package in the mail about 24 hours later, and i think that this has a chance of dropping in the package. its around 5% for the pet bombling though.

You CAN renew as many times as you want in a row, and get that many gifts. You DO need to destroy your card every time, or else the quest will detect a "duplicate item" and not complete. Just keep destroying it, clicking the quest, completing, paying 2G, until you feel like you've paid enough. You can do this once or 100 times (there might be a cap, if you're putting more than 20g into this at a time you might want to back off). Then go about your merry way, check your box tomorrow and see if your gambling has paid off. So far I have gotten all Unstable Triggers, Mithril Casings, and Mithril Tubes, and some lower Green Schematics like Catseye Ultra Goggles. So they seem to have made the gift items on par with the renew price. I think I've made a profit off it, no one ever puts those things up at AH =). Hoping for my rare pet soon though. (Thought: what you get in the mail, not counting the pet, may change according to what your skill level is. Not sure if this is true. But unless you NEED this pet at level 40, wait until 60 when you can maybe get better junk items and have more money to blow)

This pattern can now drop off of Arcane Nullifier X-21's in Gnomeregan. It is still Bind on Pickup, and I think you have to be an Engineer in order for it to drop since I've never seen it drop for any of my non-Engineering chracters.

Same for me. Ran Gnomeregan four times. Looted pet bombling schematic first time through from Mekgineer first time through. Looted Lil' Smoky schematic fourth time outside Tinkers Court off of an Arcane Nullifier.

You do not automatically get this schematic when you become a Gnomish Engineer.

After you are a Gnomish Engineer, the quest giver for the Gnomish Engineer Quest (as well as artisan Gnomish Engineer NPC's scattered about the world that teach you schematics) will give you the option of renewing your Gnomish Engineer Membership. You don't need to destroy the card to do this, you don't need to have the card to do this, you just need to be a Gnomish Engineer. You can even do this before your old card expires.

After you choose to renew your membership, which costs 2g - no faction discount - you will be given a new card (or a "refill" of your current card) good for another 14 days. Within 24hours of real time, you'll get a letter and a gift in the mail. The letter will thank you for continuing to be a dues-paying Gnome Engineer (as if you had a choice in the matter) and attached will be a gift. There is a chance that the gift will be this schematic. Other gifts I've gotten have been random low-level (iron and below) engineering parts, or small piles of blasting powders (again, the best I've gotten is heavy powder). Some people consider it worth the gold to repeatedly renew their card every time they get the gift until they get this schematic. I'm not sure if renewing before your gift arrives gets you two gifts, or only one.

ok just wanna make sure i got this 100% clear. i can either sign up for gnomish engineering(which i did a long time ago) and then get a package with some form of package or schematic in the mail? or if i destroy and pay the 2g to renew my card i will get a package or schematic of some form in the mail? and in both cases within 24 hrs?

Alright guys, let me clarify things for you. First, after renewing your membership card you will not receive any gifts immediately, however, you are going to receive gift boxes by mail 24h later. It's worth noting that you get one gift box per renewal and you can renew as many as membership cards as you want. Now, you can get this schematic exactly from these gift boxes. From what I have experienced, the drop rate is low. I spent around 120g to get mine. Other things I got from gift boxes are Mithril tubes, Mithril casings, Unstable triggers, Schematic: Parachute Cloak, and Schematic: Catseye Ultra Goggles.

I was getting fed up with this quest not giving me the schematic, so I turned in 20 of them.

To my dismay the following day, I opened all of the gifts and all 20 of them didn't contain the schematic. Just about lost my mind! Dropping another 20 today and I'll let you know if RNG was a cruel mistress again.

Edit: NOPE. I'm 225/300 Gnomish Engineering. No pattern yet.
