I have this (Defense of Shado-Pan) but does that mean that I already did The Shado-Pan? Where I am now, Nagrim has nothing for me (but i did get lost and might have done these out of order).

On this quest, don't make the mistake I did and kill the mobs at full health wandering the village. Kill the ones right at the door to the Shado-Pan fallback, fighting the Shado-Pan Guard NPCs. The NPCs hit like trucks and will do most of your work for you.

Just dot all the ones being killed around the monestary... doesn't matter what health they are at. The panda's attacking them hit really hard so u just have to run around dotting. Easy as pie

Not only is it easier to attack the mobs the NPCs are, you don't even get credit for killing the ones around the village, so there's no point whatsoever in targetting them.

EDIT: I don't know how long this has been the case but this quest has finally been fixed. You do get credit for killing the Yaungol in the village now.

You have to kill the mobs attacking the guards. The ones wandering around won't give you quest credit.

Has anyone had trouble not getting any credit for these kills? I have Test your Strength currently in my quest log, and I am getting Grisly Trophies for Sha kills but not quest credit.

When I tried to do this quest yesterday, Shado-Master Chong offered me both The Defense of Shado-Pan Fallback and Turnabout at the same time. As a result, I didn't get credit for killing the Yaungol, and nor did I get any drops from the Sha.

This appears to be a bug — dropping both quests and just picking up The Defense of Shado-Pan Fallback allowed me to get credit for the kills and then I turned in, picked up Turnabout and all was good.

The mechanics of this quest would seem to have changed as of patch 5.2. Today (3/6/13), as before, killing wandering NPCs in the village does not advance the quest, but today jumping into fights with NPCs already engaged with guards also did not advance the quest. Credit was giving for attacking an undamaged NPC advancing to attack a monk, and the monks did help after you engage.

This quest is currently bugged as of 5.2 release. None of the Yaungols, near the door nor wandering in the area highlighted in blue on the map, will give credit for a kill. GM ticket opened... will update this comment in 3 days when GMs return my call.

Update:
Gm Response: This is a known issue. The only way to complete this quest currently is to engage the packs of 3 Yaungol as they approach the gate, but before they aggro onto the the Shado-Pan defenders at the door. Not every pack will give you credit for the kills, but it only took me 21 kills to get the credit for the 15 I needed.

To add to Slummish and Hilgra's comments. If you have your UI set to show names over mobs, look for the ones whos names are "lit up" as quest objectives. They charge the gates in packs of three and no matter how hard I tried, I never got more than 2 of the 3 to count towards the quest at a time, usually only one...

Horrific quest since the patch. Not even the fire-throwers directly around the little tower give credit. You used to be able to help the guards kill and get credit, now since they kill so fast and do so much damage you'll be lucky if you get credit for two. Blizzard needs to change this back.

Best to wait a little ahead of the guards so you can intercept the spawns.

This quest is definitely bugged. Those mobs by the sha pools should be the ones to attack, not just the ones by the wall. Also - even killing the ones attacking the pandas didn't give credit. I kept aoe'ing, dotting, MD'ing them to my pet; approx. 1 out of every 3 gave me credit.

As of march 25 2013 this quest is still bugged. You have to engage the attackers as they approach the keep, but before the shado pan defender starts attacking them.

So, as Stummish says in their post above, patch 5.2 has bugged this quest. :-(
But there is an easy way to still complete it:
Don't try to attack the mobs who are already engaged with the Shado-Pan.
Instead take the groups of 3 before they arrive.
I found a good spot at 45.8 90.0 where groups of 3 mobs regularly pass through. Just tag them with an AOE attack and then kill them. You should get credit for all 3.

EDIT: seems like this got fixed - whilst levelling yesterday (13 June 2013) there was no problem getting credit for the mobs even if they had been pre-aggro'd by the guards. :-)

It appears that you have to get the killing blow on the mobs near the gate. Since the NPCs hit so hard, it's best that you pull mobs to the side so that the NPCs don't intervene and steal your killing blow.

To unlock this quest, you only need to complete "Call Out Their Leader" at Binan Village. There is no breadcrumb, but once you have done that quest you will find that this quest is now offered.

The bug made this super easy for me. They have no aggro so I just stood in the middle and killed them as they respawned. Took about 3 mins to kill 15 of them.

Rogues can simply turn on Blade Fury and go to town!

There's a good spot by the east door of Shado-Pan Fallback, just beyond the monks. There are two large rock and between them the mobs spawn once the previous one is dead. Don't get too close to the monks though because they will steal kills from you! Also, even when I killed all three guys in a mob sometimes I only got credit for 1 or 2.

Note: You can tell when you are killing in the right area because you will get a very small amount of exp per kill, for those of us who aren't level 90 yet.

Note for Warlock (in 5.2)

Was killing here without getting the kills for the quest; but got 1 so it couldn't be completely bugged.
After some testing i had to conclude that using the Unstable Affliction is bugged for these kills. Without this spell my kills counted for the quest.

Also the (void) minion spells Torment & Suffering seem to be bugged for this quest.

Here's the scoop as of today. It's not really bugged....the code that directs the action or the quest itself is not written well..

You cannot get credit for any of the ones just standing around, in fact they won't even attack you
.
You cannot get credit for any that have engaged with the shado-pan already or manage to get to them, even if you have tagged them first.

You will get credit if you can tag them and aggro them right after they spawn and are running into battle. One area that works well if you want to take down three at a time is........

Go out the door on the right side of the room, walk straight past the shado pan that are standing there. even if they are fighting. Walk out to where the rocks separate and park yourself.

When the mobs die that are fighting with the shado pan by the door, three mobs will spawn out past the rocks. Tag them all before they get to the rocks, kill, and they will respawn in just a few seconds and you will have three more to kill. If one gets past you, you do have to wait until the shado pan kills him for the three to respawn.

As of 5.3 this quest is finally fixed and you can now get reward for killing the ones on the "sha-touched zone". But you can always kill the ones being attacked by the shado-pan guards, even if the yaungol is low on health.

Description

I sent for reinforcements from the Shado-Pan Monastery, but have heard nothing back. We have already lost the town. A few lucky villagers may have survived, but we are pinned down here. We do not have time to entertain strangers. If you can fight, help my men defend this tower. If not, leave, for you will not survive long here.
