This item when combined with a Healthstone becomes The Codex of Xerrath, which begins a challenging solo questline for Warlocks leading you to Outland and eventually into the Black Temple on the trails of the Council of the Black Harvest introduced in the Legacy of the Masters (Part 1).

Once completed, you will be rewarded with the spell: The Codex of Xerrath which as mentioned, turns your fire spells, your Metamorphosis and your Felsteed / Dreadsteed mounts green.

The Tome is a low drop chance from rare spawns on the Isle of Thunder.

It can be traded and auctioned.

"Determined or fortunate enough" to find one sure sounds like a rare drop to me. Most likely from mobs on the new Thunder Isle. Also, seems likely that it will be Soulbound, otherwise they would have added "rich" enough. :-)

To begin the Black Harvest questline on the PTR, you can find an item that starts the quest as a drop on the "Green Flame Infernal." When 5.2 goes live, the item will be rarer but not stupidly rare.

Known Issues:
1) At one point you will be asked to speak with a Warlock trainer. The quest is not hooked up to every possible trainer, so keep talking to trainers until you find one.
2) At a later point in the quest, there is a timed element. In the current build, you must finish the trial within the time frame given or be forced to redo it. In a future build, you will be able to proceed even if you fail the time check. This will make sense when you see it.

Just looted mine off Al'tabim the rare spawn. I'm not sure on the drop rate obviously but I was farming rares for about 3 hours and probably killed each rare around 3 times.

The rare mobs on the Isle of Thunder are dropping these at a low drop rate.

The item is only lootable by warlocks.
You can see the item in the rare mob if it drops - but you won't meet the requirements to loot it as a non-warlock.

Can the Tome be looted if you already completed the quest?
This is a tricky one. For what I can say: I have looted it after I had already completed the quest.
But I also contacted a GameMaster who explained, that it shouldn't be possible.
When I looted it the second time, I had another Warlock in my group and also another Warlock attacked the Rare.
Maybe one of this was the reason of the issue.

This is so irritating! Some say it's the Green Flame Infernal, others say they got the item off the rares on Isle of Thunder. I've killed 12 rares, and have camped many hours for the infernal and have gotten nothing.

Things I would like to know:
Drop rate (off Infernal and/or off rares on Isle of Thunder)
Spawn rate of Infernal
Is it shared tag? or do I need to be in a party or just be there killing it to get the item?
Does anything else have a chance to drop the Codex?

If you're grinding the rares on a high pop server, spam loot like there's no tommorow when the rare dies. I saw this on ku'lai the skyclaw's loot table when he died, but it vanished right away and some other warlock linked it in general and was quite happy.

My point for posting this is so people don't think this item is an individual RNG drop like the valor tomes. Enable auto-loot, and don't miss your chance at picking this up, or someone might beat you to it.

Edit: I think I may have been wrong on this post. It seems as if it IS an individual RNG drop, but any warlock who loots it will be able to see the item. I guess you just have to hope the one that you see on the loot table is yours.

Just got this today on my 19th rare kill

The rare mobs seem to have a 40 minute respawn timer, the loot is Free for All, anyone who attacked the rare elite can loot the book, and there's only one to loot so you'd better have Autoloot on!

Mine dropped today off of Mumta. The loot was bugged in our party and showed that there was nothing on the boss for me. I logged out and back on to find Sealed Tome of the Lost Legion, plus the 15 valor tome. I estimate that this was my sixth rare kill on the Isle.

I looted my tome from a rare in the thundering isle, when you are doign the quest chain you will come upon a scenario in the black temple, when you are inside you will be tested in many ways when you must use the warlock spells to find traps and so on, but dont get your hopes up, at the last stage you must solo a warlock with 31 million hp and he casts spells you have to outrange or you will be one shotted, i tried all night and i ended up with taking him down to 20 million and then i made one single mistake and i died instantly. So you really have to prove your skills to get it to work out!
He also summons demons that you have to take controll off, and then you can use them against him!

I do not believe that it is the 1st warlock to loot who gets the item. Killed the Heywire machine on the beach and at first it showed me no loot, so I had to run out and then come back to get loot and there it was.

2.Go to Key-bindings, find; "targeting functinos", set a key easy to use for "Interact with target".

3. Set "Auto Loot" on in interface options.

as you may know the target clears when it dies, with /tar macro you will be able to grab the corpse, then you will have to spam "interact with target" key to loot the body. its the most effective way to loot the corpse, sad thing is the tome never dropped for me heh.

Anyone know if this item is a world drop on isle of thunder or is it just a drop off the rares due to i recall seeing a post on the blizzard site saying it droped off a lot of mobs. If you kill a rare spawn on the Isle of Thunder and are unable to loot, run back to the questgiver bubbles and then back to the mobs. You should be able to loot once you return.

I just looted 2 of these on back to back kills of Prog and Goda. (How the horseshoe found its way up my butt I cannot say.)

I say this not to brag, but to confirm that the same lock CAN see this drop more than once, so if you're farming rares (say for the pet, or just valor) it's worth using a warlock for this. I was curious to know the answer, and then it presented itself to me quite quickly.

I was debating keeping/selling the first one, and then the solution presented itself on the very next kill. So I was able to bind my healthstone to the first one and loot the second.

I made the mistake of saying this in trade and was immediately spammed with lots of offers to sell it from 5 or 6 warlocks.

Just had a conversation with a GM.
He said that when dropped, the tome could only be taken by ONE warlock.

So yeah, if you saw the tome drop but it disappeared because of the usual bug... And after reconnecting it's gone...

I killed around 30 rares & just looted this off a rare on the Isle of Thunder my DK friend asked me to wait for him but a horde hunter came along so i said attack it or not attack & I made my mind up to attack it & after it died i looted my Sealed Tome of the Lost Legion off Ku'lai the Skyclaw a reather sweet win if you ask me.
If I could I would give that horde 20kg for helping me with the kill.
After seeing some of the other post i got reason to think that the drop is within a 1-30 drop chance or a bit of a 1-100 drop chance but for some it may take a little more you just got to keep trying to you loot this awesome Warlock item don't give up each kill brings you closer to having your spells changed.

Just to clarify.. It doesnt matter if you loot one of the rare bosses first or last, The loot is individual.. Yeah it's possible you see the tome when you open the loottable while it didnt actually drop for you, (As happened with a warrior in my team who could see it, But not loot.)

According to the armory, the item should drop from mobs required for the dominance dailys/black prince reputation farming in krasarang wilds. But the droprate is "higher" on the isle of thunder rares than in krasarang.

After near 100 rare kills and reading information everywhere here's how it happened to me:

Mumta spawned and an enemy faction player attacked first, a lot of people joined and there were only 2 warlocks (myself and another one from the enemy faction).

When Mumta died I couldn't loot, so I knew I had to log out and back in to get my tome of valor... then I noticed the alliance (I'm horde) players were still kneeling over the corpse, so I thought something was going on.

When I log back in and loot, the tome of the lost legion was there just waiting for me to click on it :D Later I had the alliance warlock log on a horde toon and asking me if I got it, when I confirmed he told me he could see it, click on it but he couldn't loot it.

From this I gather:

1. It doesn't matter which faction/player attacks first.
2. It doesn't matter if another lock clicks on it before you, if you've been assigned to loot it, it will stay there until you get it.
3. RNG sucks.

Got the tome off of Goda, easily 50+ tries, definitely did not want to count them. got to scenario and loving the story and how challenging it all is, but I can't seem to repair and get back to where I was in the scenario. I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to repair and resume instead of starting the whole place over again...

Edit:

To clarify as after resetting I got to the final part. The scenario does not save your progress until after you fight Kanrethad. the main part of the scenario is not bad I would just recommend repairing before you go in. Once you reach Kanrethad you can exit and enter and return to that point as you please.

I don't know why my original comment was down voted, but I'm going to repost it anyway.

You can loot multiple of these, however you can only hold 1 in your inventory / bank at the same time as they are classed as 'unique', simply loot one and either convert it with a health stone / AH it or Funnel it to an alt so that you can farm another.

There is no limit to how many you can physically loot, Currently I have farmed and looted 7 to date, used one myself, sold 4 and have 2 more sitting on the auction house.

They drop from the 6 available rares (Not including Ra'Sha) and are not dependant on you looting first, when it drops everyone will see it however it will only be lootable by the one it is assigned to.

Only Locks can loot it.

Currently I am selling them at 50k each on my realm.

Haters gonna hate.

If you are one of the many warlocks like me who see this drop from a rare mob but another warlock took it because he loot fast this is a very good strategy you can use.

1.- First of all dot the rare or hit it with a spell so you get the tag and be able to loot.
2.- Pull and tag 1 normal mob which is near the rare and pls don't stack it with the rare. (there are many mobs near rares usually)
3.- Kill the mob in first place while other players (or your pet) tank and dps the rare.
4.- Prepare to loot the mob when the rare is going to get killed.
5.- Loot the mob when the rare just die and the AOE loot is going to take care of everything.
6.- Profit.

This way you don't have to fight for clicking the mob when there is many players trying to loot and if you are fast looting your normal mob you can be at least the most of the time the first one looting so if the book is droped you can click it faster while other players are still clicking in the rare or reloading if there is "no loot" for them. Be sure to not be in a group, if you are tell the group lider to put the loot in free for all and tell your party to no loot anything before you.

I got mine on my 45th rare kill, Mumta to be exact. A group of Allies were giving me grief all day, while I was trying to solo my rares, so I started leeching of their kills. And that's the tactic that got me my tome. xD They must have been able to see it as well, because they all started yelling about something.

I just was hoping to give some productive information on drops... I have 705 Valor earned the first week of 5.2, I can a tribute 6 sunreaver chests, and the rest was all drops off of various rares...

I have killed 41 rare mobs on my warlock on the isle of thunder in the course of 1 week. with a droprate of 3% I theoretically have already gotten one and a third tomes so far. This leads me to believe that I am extremely unlucky, OR 3% isn't set in stone, I mainly tend to believe the second option seeing as it only counts 787 kills of mumta, I promise mumta has been killed more times than that. I am going to look into downloading the wowhead addon and start data mining for wowhead so warlocks everywhere can get more accurate information. I also have come to believe that it can drop off of other things than IoT rares; however I can't confirm this...

Appropriate that I am posting the 50th comment as that was about the number of kills it took for this to drop for me over two days. It was 4 a.m. and I had waited about 5 minutes after announcing several times that Al'tabim the All-Seeing was up. No response and he was going to be my last rare so I decided to solo it and I almost had a heart attack when I looted him.

I don't normally post in general chat but I had to say something and surprisingly received several grats. I am wondering though if it may have glitch dropped before as I have read several comments and did have a few occasions where I did not get loot. Make sure you leave and come back to verify after a kill if no loot drops. Oh well...The precious is mine. Now for the hard part.

Just dropped for me today from Al'tabim the All-Seeing, first kill of the day but prolly just lucky
I want to point out a few things i read here and are indeed true, it doesn't matter who loots first, the tome can be looted by the one who was lucky enough to win the auto-roll (just like LFR) therefor it doesn't matter if you loot first cause if its yours to loot then you'll see it and be able to loot it regardless of how many warlocks are present, you can get it even if you're not in the same grp with other warlocks or with the one who pulled or even if you're not of the same faction with the one who pulled, and you can loot it multiple times, by this i mean you can sell it or use it to bind it to your self and then loot it again.
hope this is of help to anyone...

P.S. if you're a warlock and you see it drop but cant loot it, it means it wasn't your loot, it was assigned to another warlock not because he was faster than you but because blizz wanted it that way, again it's not about the speed with which you loot its just that another warlock won the "auto-roll" for that item.

For people who may not know what this does, scan through all the comments and see if you'd come away with that question answered in the first 40 comments. If not, maybe you should rethink what youre posting. You can assume most ppl who are alt tabbing to wowhead searching an item want some info other than, "Been farming this for 2 weeks and finally dropped!"

We all know how RNG works. Thats not why we come to wowhead. (I know 99.99 percent of ppl do know what this does, but a lootalog telling everyone how happy you are that you finally got something after wanting it so bad and waiting so long is something you can assume nearly every wow player has in common with you. Its just not helpful info and is a waste of pplz time who are scanning through comments looking for new info).

Through experience I have received a second tome while I was still on the first tome's quest, I gave the second one away to a lock that was part of the rare kill but did not receive it. I'm sure you are able get more than one if you're lucky and sell them to the less fortunate.

The drop rate percentage displayed by wowhead will be scewed majorly due to the way the isle of thunder rares work, as every person who did damage or healed for the killing of the rare sees its drops but only 1 warlock is elegible to receive it as loot the drop rate will be artificially inflated.

Managed to get it to drop and loot on a level 87 warlock. Had a friend getting unlucky on the quest so I started leveling my 85 warlock but at some point I wonder if I could simply run into the island on the map (not possible, the isle is not there) or get a summon (works). So I killed about 20 rares, saw it once for another lock and on the second time it went to me.

I feel like they've increased the drop rate on this item. My first one took me approx 80 kills to obtain. However, in the past week, without even farming rares, I've gotten 3 more. That's from about a dozen or so kills. I cannot possibly be that lucky...

Got this Tome at my destro lock tonight, after killing the rare-elites about three (3) times each. (Got mine from Ku'lai the Skyclaw). All of them are easily soloed! I used this map to plan a route to farm:

The quests are truly epic, so you should look forward to doing them!

On a side note, the Tome only have between 1-3% drop chance from the rare-elites (except Ra'sha, who actually don't drop it), meaning it should take you between 1 - 100 kills, but regularly around 40/50 kills if you're not Cursed by bad RNG (which some unfortunately are :<) You also get 100 rep with the Black Prince (be4 bonuses) for each kill, so pretty nice reward in addition to the Tome.

I actually recommend farming the tome instead of buying it at AH. The feeling when it finally drops, and you bind the Tome to your Healthstone, and then interrogate your demons about how to read it, is really special!

From what I've seen the drop chance seems to be around 2% for each rare kill.
Your cumulative chance* to see this drop at least once with successive kills is:

5 kills - 9.6%
10 kills - 18.3%
20 kills - 33.2%
40 kills - 55.4%
80 kills - 80.1%
160 kills - 96.1%
320 kills - 99.8%
640 kills - 99.9998%

Since there are 9 rares which drop the tome, if you circuit at night when nobody is around** then after 4 circuits you have ~50% chance of it dropping. In theory you should be able to get it within a day or two.

*(if you're curious/nerdy, the probabilities were calculated using the binomial probability distribution. Since the chance is 2% independent of how many kills you've already done, it isn't as simple as 50*2%=100%. Of course, this doesn't mean that on your 160th kill you have a 96.1% of it dropping, but rather within the entire 160 kill period.
Interestingly (for the geekier players at least), since the probability tends to 1 as n (no. of kills) tends to infinity - there's a chance that even if you killed every rare on the island as soon as they spawned for the rest of your life, you still might never see the tome drop. That is to say, if you were to plot a graph of successive kills (n) by chance of it dropping (p) of the function f(n)=1-(0.98^n), the line is an asymptote to p=1.)

**(they're all easily soloable as Destruction, just use Voidlord with the Soul Leech talent, so you don't need to heal him. For Progenitus use any, just remember to avoid his knockback, and for Ramuk use Observer for the silence.
Al'Tabim's 400k damage debuff can be mitigated with Dark Bargain. The 200k damage you should take over 6 seconds once the shield expires can be reduced using Twilight Ward (it is dealt as shadow damage) and Unending Resolve (-40% damage taken).)

I don't know if the tooltips are recoloured green but I noticed that Immolate, Rain of Fire etc debuffs cast by a warlock on an enemy are green.

My question is: does the drop chance for the Tome increase on the first kill of the week? If so, then I am wasting tons of time trying to farm it running around the island on my lock, and I should just try for it once a week.

Edit: It took me 44 kills on my lock to get it. Dropped off of a Haywire Sunreaver Construct... I can confirm that you can get them from rares, and it doesn't have to be the first rare of the week. The drop rate is definitely around 2% so prepare to farm a lot if you are unlucky.

Just killed Mumta and obtained my Sealed Tome of the Lost Legion.

Earlier killed Ra'sha and Goda, without succes.
- My 3rd kill and i got my book so i must say im very lucky, although im now only missing Phoenix from Tempest keep (the eye).

My "Warlock" just obtained this item at 87 Warlock but not "accept before 90".
- Confirmed a Warlock Below 90 CAN obtain this seal at a level below 90, But i couldnt accept the quest since its "Require level 90".... Sadly!

My talents and recommendations.

Talent - Grimoire of Supremacy "For Tank-Voidlord"
- Exception can be made for "MUMTA, Grimoire of Sacrifice on your Summon Felhunter to get your pets Spell Lock"
Talent - Shadowfury "For Stun-interrupt"
Talent - Kil'jaeden's Cunning "For movement"
Talent - Soul Leech (Mainly for Self + pet absorb), high haste is good here!

I did various research on where to start, how to start, blah blah. This is where it all begins. But to get this Sealed tom of the Lost Legion, you have to kill rares. It actually took me 22 elite-rare kills for this to drop. there are 11 rares on the island, and on my 2nd go around on Goda, it finally dropped for me! Hope this helps the people who don't really know where to start.

Killed about 50 or so Rare mobs on my higher ilvl main Shadow Priest, saw 0 drop....

Jumped on my Lock, killed 4 rares and it dropped. Not sure if its luck, or if it only drops if a lock also has a tag on the rare mob.

Finally dropped for me on my warlock about 10:00 a.m ST.

Had been farming it for some time and counted about 70-80 kills of the different rares, eventually it dropped from
Lu-Ban.

Most of the fights are very easy as a warlock with your Voidwalker summoned, although Progenitus might be a bit difficult if not executed properly (just have your pet move away when he casts Unleash Blood), Mumta may also oppose a challenge but just re-summon your Voidwalker before the Avengeful Spirit tears it in two and you are good to go.

I have farmed probably around 80-100 rares and I've had about 4 tomes drop.

I would say the drop rates on wowhead are skewed because it takes account for the other 9 classes that can't loot it when wowhead data is uploaded.

If it were warlocks only I would say the drop rate would be closer to the 4-5%.

There are a few comments here asking if it will continue to drop if you have completed the green fire questline - I contacted Owen Landgren (Items & Rewards Designer for World of Warcraft), and he confirmed that they will still drop, though the same low drop rate still applies! ;)

I can't find anyone that has said this but the tome CAN be traded to a low level warlock. I was impatient and bought this for 4.6k(too good of a deal) and my 56 lock was able to loot it... but of course I can't use it till 90.

I finally got mine today after untold weeks of rare farming.
Finally snapped and went solo on Molthor and he dropped it.
Now I guess only the torturing questline remains.

What luck! Not at all per my usual form. First try of any elite kill (Goda) and the Tome dropped. I joined another lock who already had Goda to about 80%. Hopefully he/she got it as well.

Okay, so here's my little story. I decided to try farming this for my boyfriend and i, which took me around 3 hours to get 2 tomes.. I believe that i got two within 25-30 kills. Afterwards i wanted to farm these to earn a bit gold. I farmed around 3 daily - took me around 3 hours and i guess around 25-30 kills in total for 3 each time. I've looted 10 so far, but now i can't seem to get any. I've been farming for 5 hours now, killed around 45-50 rares and yet no other tome. I guess i am just unlucky, but i am thinking there might be a possibility, that there's a limit of how many you overall can loot. I've opened a ticket to ask about this - i know it's a bit crazy to ask about such a thing, since it IS a rare item.. But better be safe than sorry :)

Btw, i doubt the droprate is that low on Molthor. I've looted 3-4 of these tomes from him, yet only 1-2 tomes from the other rares. Happy hunting!

Just dinged 90 on my lock and killed 10 rares and no luck yet.
I really hope I will get one soon coz this is ridiculous to have such a low drop on a quest item...
I really enjoyed doing all warlock quests and mount quest(and pala mount too) back in Vanilla/TBC.
But this RNG even to start this quest seems stupid. Every lock should be able to start the quest like the previous class quests.
Also it should be BoP so people won't farm this 24/7 and put it for sale at AH at a overpriced levels. I'm not paying 8k for this quest item.

Really bad design Blizzard.

Anybody can help me? I complet the Seek the Signal, and then auto started the nex part, Infiltrating the Black Temple, but i dont accept it, just enter BT, and when i enter, the quest is hide, and i cant start it. Can i get it again somewhere? Or i missd it and must start it from the begining? thx

I'm well over 70 kills for this and so far, all I've received are valor points- that is, until this morning. I was killing the Haywire Sunreaver Construct and had him down to about 10% health when another warlock came over and started DPSing him with me. It dropped. He ran over and picked it up first, but it told me I couldn't loot that item (it did show it there though). Within 20 seconds, the Sunreaver disappeared.

I don't know if this means only one person can loot this item or not. I would prefer to think the game glitched rather than that someone came at the last second and stole it from from me. I've put much more of my life into this than I should have haha

Note that when you have started the quest and accidentally combine a new book with a hearthstone, it will turn into the questitem again! So be wary of that.

Not sure what's going with the drop rate now. Yesterday I was farming them at their usual drop rate. since about midnight and now(10:30am) I've killed between 50 and 75 rares and not one has dropped. That's beyond bad luck considering I've farmed over 20 of them for resell in past days. I've heard other farmers in general stating they've not seen one drop today. I CRZ across several realms and can kill in a higer than normal volume. Something's wrong here. Pretty bad since time's running out on the title. t-2days

Well I hope you aren't carrying around 𝘋𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤 Healthstones from the talent Pact of Gluttony. The quest item clearly says "Combine with a Healthstone", who would be so silly to not carefully read the instructions? (Me) Take off that talent and you'll be good to go. I hope this helps someone at some point.
