The coast of Barrens by Ratchet also frequently has pools of these and, for Horde (esp Orcs and Trolls) is a profitable way to level up their fishing skill early on. Just hop the hill behind the starting area in Durotar.

It is a low recipe in the alchemy proffesion. Most people don't want to spend the time fishing just to level it up so they go and grab these.

The west coast of Silverpine, north of the Sepulcher, is a good place to fish for these. The mobs are low level, people aren't there much, and there's about 5 or 6 pools of blackmouths. There aren't any other types of pools, either, and as many as five fish in a single pool.

I think the best place to fish those, is Ratchet at the bridge. Every 10-15 i got atleast 4 Oily Blackmouth.

I catch these from normal waters, Im fishing at Booty Bay at the moment, got arround 7 already. Have been fishing for 20 mins soon. So its not required to fish in Oily Blackmouth Pools, but it will prob help alot!

when i was on the flightpath from auberdine to ashenvale i was looking at the water and found around 3 schools of these along the shore. made me go back and fish them. on the second school i got a Weather-Beaten Journal, that dropped from a Watertight Trunk along with light leathers and bolt od woolen. made me run through the coast of auberdine and i found more 3 schools. overall 31 Oily Blackmouths in 20 minutes. not bad for a level 24 ^_^

Also, for anyone starting out and might plan on having an alchemist as an alt, don't do what I did. I sold a LOT of these and then got to some of the underwater quests in Stranglethorn Vale. Then, I had to go catch them again to send them to my alt and make the Elixir of Water Breathing. Save them; they will be very advantageous for the late 30/early 40 quests in STV.

If you're fishing these as a lv70... actually lv50+ Tanaris had many more pools and they respawned early enough that once I had run the coastline the pools at the other end were up.

I wasted a good hour and a half in Ratchet, fished 1 pool, and then no others spawned during that time. Only caught 1 or 2 out of 10 casts from just fishing the regular water, so it's definately worth it to find pools of these fish.

Also you will often catch Stranglekelp out of these pools, so if you don't have an herbalist or don't want to go swimming around picking it... just fish for these first and you'll probably have more than enough to make as many pots as you have fish for.

Along the Longshore in Westfall is a great place to fish these. Lvl 11-19 murlocs plague the beach.
Still, a great place to fish for any level.

The raw rainbow albacore can be used for cooking from skill level 50+. And, the oily blackmouth fetches a nice price on the auction because of alchemy. Oily Blackmouth is used for 3 different potions:

- water breathing
- increase melee
- something else...

i have found the best spot is westfall if you roam the coast every few or 30-40feet theres a lesser pool i useuly pick 3-7 per and by time i hit the end they respawned theres about 20 along the coast and 3 wreckage ones

Stranglethorn Vale is the best place to farm these. I also managed to fish up the chest containing the consumable that teaches you how to track fish, which is a nice bonus if you're farming these for your alchemist and fish for other professions like cooking as well.

best place i've found for these is the oily blackmouth schools up and down the beach of darkshore. you usually get about 4 per school, and they are all over, i usually fish 3 or 4 schools every 10 min or less. when u get further south of lor'danel u get a mix of blckmouth and firefin snapper schools.

farming for oily blackmouth in wetlands is not recommended for extended periods exceeding 15 mins;
I have out fished the spawn rate of the pools in the area.
during my stay I have fished:
33x oily blackmouths
17x firefin snappers
3x iron bound trunks
(note that i spent time fishing too far from the pools on occasion)
(flying mount speed is fastest attainable by players atm, and had water walking @ my disposal)

you will average 5 per pool in this area

When it said that you could find them easily in Stranglethorn I went there initially, but since cata there were only like 4 groups of them, I'm not sure if it was just me at that time, or if thats how it is since Cata. But i'd never gone there, for me I go to Darkshore, they are always there

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but I have a teeny suspicion that Oily Blackmouth schools (at least some of them) in Darkshore seem to share a spawn spot with Firefin Snapper schools. I've been farming the Blackmouths to make the free action potion and i've been noticing that when I loop back to the start of the pool spawn spots in Darkshore, I'm coming across a lot more Firefin Snapper Schools and not as many Blackmouth schools. The only way to confirm this is to fish up the firefin snappers to see what spawns in those locations.

I'll edit this post as I continue to fish, but based on current observation, there are a few Blackmouth schools that share spots with Firefin Snapper schools (at least in Darkshore). I can't speak for the other zones since I don't farm in those areas, so if anyone has any insight on spawn sharing in other zones, just feel free to reply to my comment!

These can be fished @ the dock at the end of the new Darkmoon Faire Island (when the monthly faire is in town). There is not a pool of 'em, but if you fish in the open water on the right ramp (but probably anywhere there), you can fish up a bunch. And you might also manage to fish up a Sea Pony while you are at it.

On my level 15 Night Elf Druid i got my first Oily Blackmouth at Lor'danel in Darkshore at level 45 fishing. However, i didn't get another Oily Blackmouth until i was level 68 fishing. At this level of fishing i was leveling fishing up +1 per catch.

The best place I found to fish Oily Blackmouths is off coast of Ratchet near Fray Island. I found at least 2 pools there.

dark moon faire is by faaaaaar the best place to fish for oily's. i would recomend farming them heavy when the fair is in town. darkshore is 2nd & ratchet is 3rd......but i'd just wait if i could..........yeah, its that much better in dark moon!

I've found that the best place to farm this fish is in the Northern Stranglethorn area, the pools make it so much easier, even if they are shared with Firefin Snapper ones...

If you're not after a huge pile of them and don't want to go all that far, there are usually a decent number of schools at Ratchet and south of there, plus several out on the nearby islands.

Darkshore's a great place to fish these up. Circling Nazj'vel to the south, I found four schools, as well as an additional Firefin Snapper School. I also found a few more nodes while travelling the coast and as I returned south, I crossed in to nearby Ashenvale for two more schools.

Lots of Oily Blackmouth & Firefin Snapper schools. There are little 'villages' of Murlocs but they are level 10 - 11.

In the Wetlands with the title of mini-map reading "Baradin Bay" at the /loc of 7,74 I had a 24% catch rate. I'm a horde player and fished here. Very difficult to get the title of "Baradin Bay" and not "Wetlands". My wife's map was showing 6,74 at the same spot.

Right next to the fisherman under the gryph master in Auberdine is a great place to catch Oily Blackmouths.
Got 10 of them in 15 minutes last nite using only a shining bauble and starting my fishing at skill lvl 10.

I do Alchemy...and for some potions I need Oily blackmouths! Only....I don't fish:/ Is there any other way to obtain these? Or should I become a fisherman. And I have to..what lvl fishing does it require to catch these

This post pertains to fishing in Ratchet... as for the others, I can't speak for.

Some other post mentioned that fishing skill has nothing to do with catching these things... and that it is simply "reaction time". This is a crock. Fishing skill has EVERYTHING to do with catching these and other fish/items. The reason I say this is because it will be the difference between getting a "You receive loot" message compared to the "got away" message. I'm currently at 211 and nothing gets "away" in Ratchet.

The items caught are totally random. Over various times and sittings; I've caught as many as 3 in a row of the Oily Blackmouths, then various fishes for 10 casts following that.

Location, location, location. This is as important as your skill. To receive the best chance at getting your fish/item, make sure you are in the right area. I've tended to go the locations stated here and then move up and down the waterlines testing to see if there are any places better than others. The drop rates, while varied, drop dramatically (to non-existant) if you venture down to The Merchant Coast (for example). I also tried this over in the Veiled Sea as another post suggested. Just make sure your location (above the minimap) states the Strand.

Lastly... thanks to the folks that share their knowledge on where to find the best spots. It's helped me alot with a skill that can be very time consuming. So for all the little fishers out there.. good luck!

I fished at Zoram'gar Outpost and from 100 pulls I got:

I started with around 140 in fishing and ended up with 170.

In Menethil Harbor, out where the shipwrecks are (northwest of town).

All along the shore were several schools of Oily Blackmouth. As soon as I saw it, I jumped on shore, equipped my rod and fished away.

One way to see the school from above the water is there will be a circle on the top of the water ... sort of like a disturbance of something swimming beneath it. That's a good marker to look for. Try to get your bobber to land in or around the circle for best catching results!

I also found a school of Firefin Snapper near the shore between the Deepwater Tavern and the old Osprey shipwreck.

The strangest place I have located to fish for Oily Blackmouth is the water feature (a very small pond) in front of the ransacked / abandoned house on the hilltop in Auberdine. Rate is OK (8% to 12%), but I just like it for the humor factor - standing there near the tiny pond, fishing away. Great for low-levels who want to get some cash - auction them off, and watch your silver level grow!

An abundance of Oily Blackmouth schools sit on the southern coast of Hillsbrad Foothills. Between 10 and 15 schools sit all the way across the coast, as well as Firefin Snappers.

Menethil Harbor--- I get more Firefins and Blackmouths than the "regular" fish. I also get lots of little surprises like locked boxes (i'm a rogue so it's no prob. to me, scrolls and every now and then i'll fish out some wool cloth or beer.

There are no longer random catches of certain fish. Oily Blackmouths and Firefin Snappers are used for potions and a worth money. Fishing bots killed this market so Blizzard now make schools of these fish. Very rare to get one of these fish when not fishing in a school.
There are 2 kinds of schools. One is the nice round school. Easy to cast into and guaranteed to catch whatever is in there. The other is a half crescent shaped one. The half one only gets a catch about half the time (some other fish for the rest).
There are limited number of fish in a school just like there are limited number of ore or herbs at a spot. Once the limit is reached, the school disappears. (Not timed!)
The best way to fish is to stand in the water between your knees and waist and cast directly at the school. IF YOU DO NOT TOUCH THE BLUE, you will NOT get the fish. Close does not count. If your cast looks good, change your view to see if you really are in the school. If not, recast.
To catch these fish, you have to be in the blue. Cast,cast,cast.
The areas for a school are preplanned by Blizzard and will cycle through just like ore or herbs. Certain areas have more schools than others.

Southern Desolace and found schools of both Firefins and Blackmouths. The Firefins might have been fished out of the Floating Wreckage though. Either way that's a good place to fish for them too.

Darkshore is a great place to fish for these .
Tons of schools all over .
I've just been walking up and down the coast from school to school .
Not dangerous either .
There's some murlocs along the shore, but very easy to avoid .

If you are Alliance just run along the western shore of Darkshore - You will constantly fine oily blackmouth pools. I'm not sure what level you have to be to catch them but just buy some shiny baubles and you'll be fine - i never had a problem trying to fish them and they're great for my alchemist and water potions.

I went fishing at the dock in Southshore, I found tree sorts of fish.

caught 80 Raw rainbow fin albacore, 40 oily blackmouth and 14 Firefin snappers.

I started fishing there at 95 fishing skills.

There are loads of 'oily blackmouth schools' all along Dreadmurk Shore in Dustwallow Marsh (from about 62,37 to 54,10), aswell as 'firefin snapper schools', which pretty much means you'll get a oily blackmouth everytime. As long as you can hit the circle in the water, that is.

Not sure which level you have to be to fish them tho.. I think I started catching them at around 150 or something.

A level 16 Mage had a good drop rate for oily blackmouth in the Ghostlands, on the Western sea coast at coordinates 14,64. Beginning fishing skill level was less than 50 at the start. Used nightcrawlers +50 followed by a +25 lure.

best place to fish for these BY FAR is By rachet. 10 Min At Least 20 of them. Best price I have got is 15 for 8G. Prices fluctuate alot so you gotta find best time to sell. Another good place is on the Zoram Coast (West coast of ashenvale) You get about 3/4 Draoprate of rachet but you also pull up some firefin snapper.

It is EXTREMELY easy to catch oily blackmouths. Just go to Ratchet and fish out all the schools. Move south from Ratchet when the schools are gone along the coast. You may run in to some floating boxes you can fish and do. You may get the skill find fish which makes your job even easier. I once got 10 blacks in a row from a school. I got 40 in like 30 minutes. Make sure the it lands in the school or you can get random fish.

I only had a fishing skill of 22, and I have alchemy, so I needed oily blackmouth for a potion. To fish in Menethil, I needed a skill of 55, so I decided to fish in Darkshore. Even though the drop rate was lower here for oily blackmouth, I was still able to get one out of every few catches. I got my skill up to 55 and then took the boat to Menethil and fished off the piers. The droprate was higher here and I got one out of every two or three that were blackmouths. Hope this helps.

100 percent drop rate for me I went to bloodsail compound found the schools of Oily Blackmouth at 28.38 and another at 26.38 you must cast directly into the school to get this 100% drop rate if you cast to the side you may get something else. Also note, you will only get 4-6 Oily Blackmouth then the school is gone, move on otherwise you will get some other fish and drop rate of coarse goes down. Also get the foodcrates and fish the floating wreckage (31.36 and 27.42) items while your out there for some other good stuff, btw great place to kill ally too, lol.

Be sure and fish the 'Floating Debris' spots so you can get the fish finder book drop. Once you have that all types of fish schools and anything else fishable will show up on your minimap.

In Westfall I fished off the beach on a little island so no Mobs could bother me. Don't recall how long I fished for though

I caught 60 Albacore, 26 Oily blackmouth and about 50 Mackrel. Took my fishing from about 80 to 150. No Bait. Then I cooked the Albacore and rose my cooking from around 80 to I think 125 or so.
I was also using the fishing pole that gives +5, large pole I think it's called?

Can be fished from the pier in Ratchet. Spent about 45 min fishing, starting at fishing lvl 1.

Yield:
33 Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore (what I was fishing for.. needed cooking skillups)
19 Raw Slitherskin Mackerel

Used regular fishing pole + Shiny Bauble. Final skill when done was lvl 58.

After reading some posts here (from Selbina, ponday and elannah) about how much Oily Blackmouth can be caught in menethil harbor, I tried it myself.
-> similar success with about 25% to 33% Blackmouth while fishing there.

But since a week or so i hardly catch any blackmouth there.

anybody similar results? did blizzard reduce the amount of Oily Blackmout there?

I have caught many oilys at North Tide's Run This is north of The sepulcher and you have to climb thru the mountains. It just next to one of the shamans shrine. There a entire school of them. Also I started fishing here around 120-122

Ok, I just figured out a way to get a really great catch ratio!

Get a fishing pole and go to someplace like Darkshore (shoreline north of Aub is best) or Windsheer Crag (the river, I think, but watch out for mob attacks). Those are the two best places I've noticed, so far, that are lower level areas for either faction.

Find the Oily Blackmouth Schools and cast your line into the circle or on the edge of the circle they make. ***Casting outside the circle doesn't work as well.***

In many cases you'll come across a school that seems to be in water that isn't 'fishable'. In most of those cases (but probably not all) all you have to do is wade out past the school into deeper water and cast inland toward the school. Since they're usually in shallow areas that shouldn't be too hard while still staying above swimming depth. I haven't tested this out in the river yet, but trying different angles of casting might work there too. Just move around until you can hit the target. ^_^

The schools do disappear after a random number of catches, but in some cases I caught as many as 7 fish in one school. You may get more than that ^_^

Oh! Just to make it faster, I put my fishing ability into a quick bar slot at the bottom in the secondary section so I could recast quickly if the bobber landed outside the circle. ^_^

I've caught about 30 in an hour!

Dude, fishing is only the shiz when you find schools and/or 'floating wreckages'. Don't go wasting 1 1/2 hours of your playing time just fishing in any old place.

I've seen a handful of oily blackmouth school along darkshore/auberdine along with a few floating wreckages (man, those things are SWEET. got 5 trunks from one once. =D I don't think it'll ever happen again though....T_T)

That one river running through ashenvale seems to have quite a bunch of schools too, although I don't remember what kind.

I went to Southshore last night around 8pm EST. I found that on the Eastern Strand there were lots of Firefin Snapper schools while on the Wesetern Strand there were lots of Oily Blackmouth schools. You guys should try it out, I hope it works as well for you as it did for me. Happy fishing.

with about 75 fishing, i went to the harbor in menethil harbor and got about a fire fin snapper or oily blackmouth about 40% of the time. I'd suggest using some nightcrawlers on your rod though because at my level, it took forever to actually catch a fish.

Ratchet. Just run/swin up & down the coast. I found 3 schools spawning around the dock area (early afternoon) then later (3-4am) went down the coast and found 3 schools in one bay at (63.2, 50.0) and 3 more schools on the way to that bay...so 6 schools in total down the coast south of ratchet. MOBs are low level. I fished just schools and got 4 stacks of them in a matter of a couple of hours. If you fish the schools it's virtually 100% catch rate. If the schools aren't there fish the wreckages etc until they respawn.

Was a Level 9 NE fishing in Goldshire tonight and trying to sell the fish in town to make some money lol... i paid 20 silver for just 1 fish to help them out :) that is my good dead for the day on WoW :P

I've also caught it a fair amount in Menethil Harbor.

Just went through this last night in Menethil Harbor, off the dock's edge facing away from the ship docking location. In 40 or so cast I picked up 10 Oily Blackmouths, 8 Firefins, and the rest Rainbow Fin Albacore. That's roughly 1 in 4 for Oily's, by far the best average of all the places I fish. I was so excited I mentioned my success rate in the general channel and had several folks join me, with similar success, though not as high. My fishing is 223 so don't know if that factors in or not.

I've had some minor success off the dock in Auberdine, but that' more like 1 in 8 to 1 in 10.

Not sure if something has changed, but I fished MH last night for less than an hour and got 13 Firefin and 20 Blackmouth. Started at Fishing 164.

This was WAY more plentiful than it had been three weeks ago for me. I'm fishing on the bluff just North of the dock, and then also around the corner.

It would be nice if the waters were just a little higher level, since, at 164-181, you only generate a point every five pulls here.

I always go to darkshore, i run a lil north, or a lil south, or check around the dock first.. if you see a blue floating/flashing circle.. Start here.. fish in the middle of it, till it disapears when you fish them all up.. run up and down darkshore .. This is where i am all the time to get them, infact they're the reason my fishing got up fast!

As i get them easy .. soon i'll just auction them off.

I thought it was hard at first, but that's because i was just fishing anywhere.

If you stick to where it says, fish in the blue circle you'll get 'em by the bucket load!

Take into consideration your fishing skills too.. it'll be harder when lower.

I have gotten an Oily Blackmouth at Auberdine with 83 skill at the time.

Saw a site that listed the required skill at 70

It's used to make Blackmouth Oil, which is used in Free Action, and water breathing potions, so it's Very useful, and probably sells really well.

The Dwarf that's on the Beach in Auberdine has a quest for a +3 fishing pole for catching 6 fish for him, so that's a nice place to raise skill.

Like all NPCs even if he doesn't have the ? over his head, click and you should still be able to get the quest if you haven't run it.

Zaldor, you don't need to make a new guy for Fishing and Cooking, you can have both of those along with your Alchemy and Herbalism, they are secondary professions, so is First Aid

Hello,

I am hoping at least one of you experience fishermen can tell me what is the safest, as in class level wise, zone to catch oily blackmouth as well as firefin snappers. My main character is a Warlock who already has Herbalsim and Alchemy as professions. Being an Alchemist requires being an herbalist, at least if you want to be able to make potions on the fly and get to the hard to find herbs. However, at the alchemy levels around 80 or so, and then later on, it is extremely difficult to level up without oily blackmouth and then later at 110 or so, firefin snapper.

Therefore, I have decided to make a secondary character that does fishing, and probably cooking. And perhaps a rogue or a druid, since they can either move fast or with stealth. I will most likely make a rogue so I can pick locks from any chest I fish up. But my goals are to first, get good enough to catch these fish, around 75 to 80 in fishing from what I am reading, and at the same time, be able to fish at as low a level of rogue or druid as I can.

So my question is this, are there any newbie zones, like zones with capital cities in them where I can catch these fish, or at least the oily blackmouth, and if not, what is the lowest class level zone I can fish these in, assuming I have the fishing level needed?

Also, I am a little confused from the posts. Is the only way to catch oily blackmouths out of a school or circle of them, or can they also be caught by random in certain areas. The only schools I have actually seen are in Westfall Longshore. I am new to the game, so if you answer my question, and give a body of water, please tell me the name of the zone the body of water is in, and/or the closest Capital City.

P.S. - If you are on the Darnassil server, and would be willing to make a trade for potions and oily blackmouth, please let me know. I am just not that good at making money, and I will never be able to afford the 2gp 20 oily blackmouth go for. The hardest potion I know how to make take 2 of them to make one potion, which means 2 gps for 10 skill levels in alchemy. Just not worth it. And before I made that one, it took 4 to make one potion, the water breathing one. Two gps is definitely to much for 5 skill ups and 5 water breathing potions, especially since I have a spell that has the same effect, but last much longer. Thank You.

my lock is lvl 30 and has harbalism of 199 and alchemy of 198 and has not dropped a single hook in the water. I only picked herbs from Loch modan,dun morogh(early alchemy) and the wetlands. I am new to the game so dont know many zones but the professions have been easy so far and peeps in the AH like the potions =-).

guys the safest place to get this is right beside ratchet. the place where there r pirates lvl 12-16 how easy is that. for us huters and warlocks at lvl 20 or up simply put ur pet on aggresive and let it do the work

Can confirm that it drops in Menethil Harbor with pretty decent chance from normal nonschool water.

Sample of 10 minutes fishing with 100+ skill and Aquadynamic Fish Attractor applied:

Overall absolutely great spot to fish, highly recommend.

you can find schools of them in alongside beach of Darkshore, Loch Modan, The Barrens, Silverpine Forest and Westfall.

Depending on the time of the day, the pools can be heavily fished and if you don't have a mount it can be a huge waste of time.

I tested out the wharf at Menethil Harbour. In 20 casts on my level 20 toon with Level 150 fishing I caught the following:

Oily Blackmounth x 6
Firefine Snapper x 4
Raw Rainbow fin Albacore x 10

That means that the two useful alchemy fish made up 50% of the catch. On the whole I almost prefer just sitting there and fishing since the number of pools I may get is limited and the running time back and forth negates the benefit. Its only really better if you do it in the middle of the night.

I've been catching these pretty consistently on the Ratchet docks, even outside of their little designated whirlpool areas at around level 145 fishing.

A stack of them sells for around 2g on my server.

TBC Classic 2021 update:
Can only confirm on Stranglethorn. West coast approx 5-6 Schools of Oily Blackmouth's spawned during my journey up and down the coast. Needed these things to level Alch as prices on AH were extortionate. Fished about 5 firefin snapper pools also to clean up and add to chances that additional Oily blackmouth schools would spawn.

For Alliance, I have found that although Darkshore has more nodes, they respawn very slowly. On your first initial clear of the nodes there are plenty, but on your way back and after a few pass-overs the modes are few and far between, I've experienced often times I will get no nodes at all after my first clear of the Darkshore coast. I've found that Westfall is better for consistent farming, the nodes seem to spawn faster there, to where you will get multiple on your way back. This is after multiple hours of farming in each of the zones. Both zones are Non-PvP for Alli, NPC's are also low level and wont aggro compared to other zones.

WOTLK-Classic - Fished for 2 hours in Wetlands at around 3AM server-time:

157 Oily Blackmouth (26%)
381 Rainbow Fin Albacore (63%)
63 Firefin Snapper (10%)

El's Fishing site claims Wetlands has a Oily Blackmouth drop chance of 30% but this seems slightly inaccurate.

On Classic SOD- if you're alliance, I think Wetlands ocean coast open water fishing is probably your best bet to get both Firefin Snapper and Oily Blackmouth in relatively efficient numbers. I got about twice as much blackmouth as firefins. I also tried in Stranglethorn (booty bay fishing off the docks) and got about the same amount of each, overall less per time. Hillsbrad ocean fishing off Southshore dock may be about the same %'s as Wetlands.
