Survival Hunter DPS Rotation Guide - MoP Classic (Phase 5)

How Survival Hunter Plays

Survival Hunters in Mists of Pandaria Classic focus heavily around rapid burst windows in both single-target and AoE scenarios. Generally, you will spend a lot of time casting Cobra Shot, as your primary objective is to always have enough Focus to cast other abilities when they come off cooldown. You have to see into the future in a way. For example, if both Explosive Shot and Black Arrow will come off cooldown in 3 seconds, you want to start pooling Focus for both casts right away. This creates a flow where you're alternating between generating Focus and spending Focus, and it's where the main complexity of playing Survival Hunter lies, in mastering this flow.

Incredible Burst
With Explosive Shot and Black Arrow, Survival Hunters have impressive burst potential in both single-target and AoE scenarios. Your Explosive Shot hits hard and comes with a short cooldown, making it your primary Focus spender. When Lock and Load is up, you should prioritize sending those Explosive Shots, even in AoE situations, for maximum damage output.

Focus Management
A big part of playing Hunter is managing your Focus. You have one Focus generator and many spenders, and it's your responsibility to make sure that you always have enough Focus to cast any spender that comes off cooldown. This means a regular flow of generating and spending Focus. Since you have several talents that also give you Focus, you need to take those into account. Spending Focus means damage, which means it's also important never to cap out, as that effectively loses you DPS.

Masters of Mobility
As all of our abilities, including our Auto Shots, can be cast on the move, we can use our full rotation while completely mobile. Couple that with abilities like Disengage and talents like Posthaste, and we're able to zoom all over the map while doing the same DPS as if we were standing still. This can be hugely beneficial, especially on bosses and fights that require you to move on short notice.

Cooldown Usage for Survival Hunters Offensive Cooldowns

Rapid Fire - A small Bloodlust. Stack it with Stampede and the rest of your cooldowns.

Fervor - A Focus tool, not a damage cooldown. Use it when you drop to around 50 Focus so you never stall on Cobra Shot.

Rabid - A pet cooldown you want on cooldown, since it ramps your pet's attack speed.

Defensive Cooldowns

Deterrence - Can be used in many scenarios to completely avoid damage. It also reduces your damage taken by a great deal when it's active.

Disengage - Disengage from the target, throwing you backwards. Good for when you need to get away from a ground effect or jump over something.

Feign Death - Mostly used in solo play, but it will save you if you accidentally pull too many mobs.

Dash (Symbiosis) - Removes all roots and snares and increases your run speed for 15 seconds. While similar to the talent Posthaste, it could potentially be used to good effect.

No glaive toss in the rotation at all?

Great work. About opener: A murder of crows starts damaging target after a while and it is dynamic while black arrow is snapshottable (blackarrow does !@#$ damage ik). So changing their place looks good on paper with more prepot+rap+crit uptime for crows and little snapshot for black arrow. LnL proc might be the tricky part tho. (If black arrow is dynamic, i am devastated lol)

does Explosive Shot not clip the next Explosive Shot anymore? or is that detail missing in the guide. for example, I know in cata if you procced Lock n Load and then sent all 3 Explosive Shots 1 after the other, because of the short dot duration it would clip the full Shot dmg as it would rewrite the dot completely upon application of the next Explosive Shot, so you would do like, a Cobra Shot inbetween each one or 2 Arcane Shots between them

This guide is so bad that it questions the validity of every other guide published here. This trash needs to be taken down.
