The Master Riding skill comes at the hefty training cost of 5000g and you gain the Breaking The Sound Barrier achievement. Stormwind/Orgrimmar rep discounts apply since patch 3.2.2.

If your guild is level 3 or more you get the guild perk Mount Up and allows those with Artisan Riding to effectively travel at 310%. No need to purchase Master Riding unless you have the gold to burn.

My question is: If you did not have a %310 flying Mount, and it does infact cost you 5k gold to fly that fast... can you still obtain and learn/use a mount that would go %310 speed?

I'm very close to getting a couple Proto Drakes (Violet from Hallow's End, Icc10 Heroic, and Red Proto) and I have epic flying just not the Epic epic flying, so will I still be able to use these awesome ones? I don't care if they still go %280 as long as I can hop on.

@coyote72 :All mounts that previously allowed you to fly at 310% have been converted to standard flying mounts, it is your skill that determines your flight speed.

Don't buy this skill if you're almost done with the What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been (Alliance Counterpart).

We are going to be adding a hotfix for the achievement What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been. This hotfix will make it so that obtaining the Reins of the Violet Proto-Drake will award players Master riding.

For everyone who is unsure how movement speed in WoW works:

The speed listed in your buffs, (e.g 310), is how much faster you're going compared to basic run speed.

Knowing this, Master Riding is about

9.7% faster than Artisan Riding
51.6% faster than Expert Riding

Things like Crusader Aura are applied afterwards increasing the total speed by the % listed, which in this case would be 20% which is not 330%.
20% of 310 is 62, so with crusader aura Master Riding increases your speed by 372%.

Hope this clears some of this confusion up.

Ok... weird thing.. I had bouught master before patch 4.0.1 (old WotLK) for 4k and now I don't have it, I have to buy it again... wtf?

I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem and I've for it in the patch notes and on the support form for WoW, but I couldn't find anything so, I bought Master Riding about 2 days after Patch 4.0.1 came out and my 310% flying didn't work so I figured it wasn't implemented yet, but now its nearly time for Cataclysm's release and I still go my 280%. Is there something I missed?

Ok... here is what I want to know and so far I haven't seen a definitive answer on it. My mage has Reins of the Icebound Frostbrood Vanquisher, a 310% flight speed mount. What is going to happen with my hard earned mount in Cata?

Is this mount going to be reduced to 280% speed?
Will I have to shell out 4K gold to get my 310% speed back?
Will players with pre-cata 310% speed mounts get to keep their 310% speed without requiring Master riding?
Will Master riding be awarded to players who own 310% pre-cata mounts that are not from What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been ?

why do i need to spend 4k gold to go 8% faster? if you are trying for a realm first achievement, then maybe it is worth it, but for the rest of us it is a waste of money.

The 8% increase is not worth 4k gold for me. I have 7 lvl 80 toons that currently all have Expert Riding skill with cold weather flying. I already spent enough money on all of them, so 4k gold per toon is not worth the insignificant speed increase. I would suggest that Blizz either boost the speed to something like 410% (instead of 310), or reduce the cost to something like 500g.

I assume they are making the price so expensive to level out the economy on the servers. If they don't make any changes to reduce the cost or increase the reward, I won't be dishing out the gold for this riding skill! Not at least until I level all my toons to 85, thus having made a lot more money to put towards the cost.

I made several thousand gold per character just by leveling each one, and I farmed the hell out of some argent tournament dailies to get heirlooms for the ones I hadn't leveled yet. That's how I made the money to pay for cold weather and artisan flying.

Here in lies my question: If you buy master riding do you need to buy artisan riding or is Master Riding the equivalent of both?

"Master Riding can be trained at the cost of 5,000 and can be discounted based on reputation from any race's faction trainer to the maximum discounted cost of 4,000 (at Exalted reputation).

For example, training cost with the Orc trainer Kildar can be reduced based on the player's Orgrimmar reputation. Players are required to train Riding at their respective race's trainer unless Exalted with another race or visiting an Outland/Northrend trainer."

I hav a question is, WHY does the mount running speed didnt increase even a bit since BC, while else are upgraded.....LOL. seems Blizzard dont want us 2 travel faster, or, maybe they've forgotten a small matter like this.

You will gain Master Riding only after you mount the Proto Drake

I don't know if it applies for other Proto Drakes but it sure does for this one, as Blizzard said it's a hot fix ( for the momment)

Posted under the achievement as well, but figured I'd repost here.

If you have Master Riding, you can between Stormwind and Ironforge faster than using the Deeprun Tram sometimes.

Tested with my warrior. Took 2min and 11 seconds to fly from SW Dwarven District to IF bank mailbox.

Unless you get on Deeprun Tram right when you zone in, it'll take you longer (took my DK 2min 56 seconds via the Tram).

Crusader Aura and other speed buffs (e.g. guild perks) will make this even faster of course.

have to ask, is this as fast as the taxi mounts in terms of speed? (i know its faster to fly in a straight line, so sometimes easier to fly yourself, but actual speed is...)

Master Riding is just like all other skills, you must own all the ones that come before it. You can't get master riding without all the other ridings as well (Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, Artisan). As well, any faction that has a riding trainer that offers master riding can have their prices lowered by 250g per reputation teir. At exalted the price goes from 5000g to 4000g.

One detail to consider is that with Master Riding, every one of your flying mounts will go at max 310 speed. Miss your old 150% speed gryphon? That old bird'll do full speed now. Same thing with lower-level crafted mounts, such as the Engineering flying machine (the easier-to-build low level one). Sometimes the biggest flying mounts are a pain to deal with, and so a smaller flying critter can land you in places a drake can't even get into.

I've also done some speed measures using the Titan Bar add-on with my hunter, who has Pathfinding. Rate is clocked at 451%, which is consistent with:

100% = normal fastest running
+310% = mount w/Master Riding skill
+ 10% = Hunter Pathfinding (non-stacking)
+ 31% = Guild level 3 'Mount Up!' bonus

Anyone know how fast the Flight Master birds are? Wondering if it's faster than Master Riding or if we can use our mounts to go everywhere just as fast.

Interesting note: after training Master Riding I found my mount speed was still only 280%. Before entering a ticket I thought I would try logging out/in. However as I mounted back up I noticed the flying speed was now listed correctly at 310%. So if you are mounted when you train up, be sure to dismount/remount to reset your flying speed before you freak out.

All ground and flying mounts now scale up to your highest riding/flying speed. You don't need Master Riding before you can enjoy this feature.

Maybe you guys can help alleviate my confusion. So the speed with master riding is +310%? Im confused because I haven't bought this yet, so I'm only at Artisan. However, when I'm flying on my X-53 Touring Rocket or my Albino Drake, my carbonite map shows I'm cruising at +310% now. I'm so confused x.x

I did some math using TomTom range and times... with the guild mount bonus and a fast flying mount you go 2000 yards per minute which is about 64 miles per hour!

The speed seems to have been increased with MoP. It now allows a 410% travel speed (451% with guild perks).

Like how Artisan Riding gave you the ability to do the Drake quest line.

As useless as this skill seems to be, you have to learn it before you can get Wisdom of the Four Winds to fly in Panderia once you hit 90... May as well pay it when you're 80 so they don't soak you for it all at 90.

Edit: You can (for now, anyway) fly Cloud Serpents in Panderia by getting exalted and paying for that training, but the only mounts you'll be able to fly with would be Cloud Serpents. This would also require getting exalted with that faction first, as well. Not a lot of fun without flying...

You never needed to learn this to get Wisdom of the Four Winds. I never bothered to buy it on any char since I am stingy, and have been able to fly in Pandaria just fine.

So I have 280% flying speed, and I can't find the Master riding skill anywhere. Upon talking to the pandaren flying trainer in vale of eternal blossoms, he tells me I have every other riding skill, but not the master one. And he doesn't offer it to me. Neither does the riding trainer in Orgrimmar, despite being exalted with the faction. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

The flying trainer in Dalaran had master riding skill, problem solved :)

Conveniently in Cataclysm Classic, as was added in WotLK Classic, mounts are account wide. A benefit to this is that if you have completed any Wrath raid meta achievements that give 310% mounts, all your flying mounts will move at 310% so long as you have purchased Artisan Riding (280%), on all characters that have made the purchase. If you've only purchased Expert Riding (150%), you will remain at 150% on that character until at least purchasing Artisan Riding.

Effectively you'll have to buy Artisan Riding on every character you want to fly fast, but you won't also have to double dip and pay another 4-5k on each character you want flying the fastest speed.
